New pricing changes to PlayStation Plus 12-Month plans.
It’s a new month, with a new lineup of PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for September. The Monthly Games lineup of Saints Row, Black Desert – Traveler Edition and Generation Zero will be available to PlayStation Plus members on Tuesday, September 5 until Monday, October 2.
Let’s take a closer look at each of the games in turn.

Saints Row | PS4, PS5
Experience the biggest and best Saints Row playground ever created. The unique sprawling world of Santo Ileso is the backdrop for a wild, larger than life sandbox of thrilling side hustles, criminal ventures and blockbuster missions, as you shoot, drive and wingsuit your way to the top. Take over the city block by block, wage war against enemy factions and tighten your grip on the streets. Play online with a friend at any time, via fully untethered drop-in / drop out co-op, skipping the need to take either of you out of the outlandish action.

Black Desert – Traveler Edition | PS4
Find your calling in this open-world fantasy MMORPG which boasts fast-paced PvE combat, large-scale PvP siege wars, multiple character classes and combat types to specialize in. You can also choose to dedicate yourself to a variety of pursuits, such as trade, fishing, horse training, alchemy, cooking, and gathering. The Traveler Edition is a bundle of the base game and multiple add-ons*.
*Those add-ons collectively constitute The Traveler Item Pack, which is also available on PlayStation Store as a separate download. PlayStation Plus members who have already purchased any edition of Black Desert cannot redeem the full Traveler Edition bundle from PlayStation Plus. However, PlayStation Plus members who have already purchased any edition of Black Desert other than the Traveler Edition may redeem the standalone Traveler Item Pack from PlayStation Plus, instead.

Generation Zero
This first-person open world adventure is set in a familiar but hostile open world of 1980s Sweden. Battle and survive deadly machine enemies alone or with three friends in seamless online co-op as you discover the truth behind what’s happened to the region. You must choose your battles wisely as you engage in adrenaline-pumping guerilla combat against these mechanical forces. Scavenge parts from your fallen enemies and use them to craft equipment, weapons and ammunition. Build and fortify your own bases across the island and start taking back your home.

@ heroicpower : 774 comments, 106 likes. This means a decrease by 85% of revenue for PlayStation.
Sadly not as the vast majority of PS gamers don’t visit the website or comment or like .85% of visitors to this story may cancel their subs, but I expect the majority to keep paying to player COD etc., and the 20% increased revenue per user will hugely offset the 3% of cancellations or whatever it ends up being.
We’ll only know on Sony’s next financials, if they report a decrease is MAUs.
I dont have auto renewal subsription. I buy it once a year playstation premium. Games i play on playstation i have to buy anyway because it comes as basic no dlc no nothing. Congrats im switcing to pc i heard they dont have to pay for online accses.
You dont know what your customers are.
And you just did dylan mulveiny budlight yourself thing. Its gonna be amazing to watch. Its not worth it.
New games comes as broken as its no dlc bare bones. Its not worth the price of playstation premium for some boring looking skins on apex. Or games i dont like anyway.
After this subsription ends. This is my last buy anything from playstation or sony.
Bye.
I cancel my subscription when it ends in a few days. It’s pathetic to pay so much when playing online should already be free. + No value
Second hand xbox looking good. Hell my gaming laptop siting in the corner not milking my money for online services looking even better.
Oh boi playstation just dylan mulveiny budlighted themselfes. Bie subscription and anything of sony greedy bas…
35% spike up. Bye bye playstation say hi to my gaming laptop. Free online free games.
More healtier food on the table.
I can imagine how the conversation went…
Stakeholder: “Jim, it seems Microsoft finally realised Games With Gold is terrible and is now reforming their service into Xbox Game Pass Core.”
Jim: “I know a solution! Let’s make PS Plus, including the entry-level plan, more expensive than the competition. We will also offer lower quality games and not least forget we nuked the PS Plus Collection catalogue earlier this year, that’ll please the fans.”
Sony has really lost its way, and it is very sad to see. The naïve side of me is expecting a huge mid-month update for Extra/Premium. Native PS3 emulation would be nice, but I’m not holding my breath. Sadly it is likely to be merely a pipedream. I am expecting any “justification” to be related to 4K streaming of PS5 games as a Premium feature, and perhaps current streaming quality being made available in Extra.
Just turned on my gaming pc. Bie playstation sony an your bs.
Playstation portal what a clownery..
People wouldn’t have reacted so strongly if the increase were more reasonable, like going up by $5 instead of $20 whole dollars.
Great my playstation 5 gonna be used as paper weight or door stopper..
PC Master race anyway.
Even playstation premium subscription not worth it.
Bye.
Thanks for making me realise that i dont need to pay for online game play.
Bie bie playstation.
Just unpluged my playstation 5 from tv and
Pluged my gaming laptop connected my ps4 controler. Free games free online . I dont need any subscription.
I have been a gamer since Atari 2600 and a Playstation owner of every model, I have always considered the costs versus the value they provided at the time -which is subjective to everyone.
From a company perspective recurring subscription payments provide a relative guarantee of future revenue be that for profit, or future product investment. In marketing terms Sony have taken a huge risk here by giving customers the ability to re-examine the subscription price they pay -something that is normally left ‘out of sight / out of mind’. Burying the new pricing model at the bottom of the monthly games announcement demonstrates the trap they are now in, they can’t fully hide this announncement when normally, increases are made small and often over time. This large of an increase signals either greed or something more critical going on behind the scenes.
Consoles have given us the convenience of ‘quick-fix gaming under a TV’ but companies need to keep their audience ‘hooked’ into their marketplace to succeed.
Subscriptions were introduced at the end of the PS3 lifecycle with a ‘hook’ of cloud saves and “free games” -convenient and reasonably priced at the time. Like many, I only reviewed the perceived value at renewal time. Everyone else was OK with the cost -so it must be OK right? That cost increased steadily over time like a live lobster in a pot of water slowly being heated to boiling point -until it was too late.
As evidenced by this blog, the majority of gamers just want online multiplayer and auto save game backups both should be free in the big picture of profits vs datacentre costs but I suspect most gamers would be happy to pay a small amount, personally I’d be happy with just USB auto-backup and free onlline multiplayer.
“Free” games were added by Sony to justify the price increases for their subscription roadmap. Some people like the games (especially to trial), but most have already bought what they want by the time they become available on PS+ so the real value to the majority is low vs what they are paying. I do understand the value of backwards compatibility for many, and this is more likely to justify some level of subscription, however Sony will never out do Microsoft in this area.
The PS5 introduced something which I find particularly agregious -locking the player game save backups behind the subscription paywall -something that Nintendo are also guilty of and I’m surprised this hasn’t become more of a talking point. Its your ‘earned’ data – and it should be openly available to you -morally if not legally, I think its reprehensible that people are held hostage to subscriptions using this tactic.
Today’s pricing increase is because subscriber revenue has plateaued and Playstation needs to remain competitive or greedy, not sure which.
Sony are betting that enough subscribers will stay with them, allowing the price increase to still increase revenue. In business terms this is a reasonable “test” -and one they can roll-back if it doesn’t go well. For Gamers it will decrease the number of people playing PS+ online for sure (even if they roll it back now). If it doesn’t work, expect to see a massive “we are still your friends” campaign giving something of value back or a discount – but unlikely anything that would de-rail long term revenue growth for them in this area.
In today’s world of ‘convenience’ there will remain a significant proportion of customers willing to pay this increase – and thats fine.
Remember how much money was put into marketing the unique looks and performance of your new shiny PS5 to hook you in.. the box is only there to hook you into their marketplace, what is obvious is that the writing is on the wall for consoles because PC’s have caught up massively with the convenience factor.
The amount of money I have spent with Sony would easily have paid for many PC’s. They have HDMI out and can be setup like a console with a Blutooth controller. You decide the hardware spec you can afford when you want, games have similar discounts/some available sooner and there are now Playstation exclusives. Free online multiplayer, free cloud backup, game mods, open access to your game saves -want more storage?… it goes on and on.
So Blue pill or Red pill: Freedom to choose your gaming quality/ongoing cost with a PC, or accept the (relatively) low upfront cost of a arguably pretty looking console box with lock-in pricing, upgrades and ‘service’ charges that will milk your wallet over time.
Today I chose the Blue Pill and my Playstations will become single player machines I will continue to enjoy. I’m now happy I waited before buying a PS5, instead I have a nice convenient white cased PC linked to my TV and most importantly, freedom over future captivity -and I will never return.
For those cancelling their subscription I salute you. The matrix will always be there for you if the real world becomes too much.
Same here in 1980 on the 2600.
I’m also going blue pill
I’ve been a gamer well before consoles were a “thing”; arcades, floppy disc games, internet cafe’s and M.U.D.D’s, anyone? I have my old consoles and games, as well as an older TV to play them on.
I agree with your comments and my earlier comments mirrors yours. Customers in general are tired of companies “charging more now,” only to fail miserably when they cannot keep their word or their promises later.
Most of the PS4 games I own are either purely offline or have and offline/online option. I have an older gaming computer (2015) that I’ve upgraded to it’s limit, so it’s now a Windows 10 machine.
I will leave the ‘pills’ to others; I rather sip my tea in my chair and wait to see how Sony will react to this feedback.
The best advice given so far is: “Speak with your wallet/dollars.” Money talks; all else kicks rocks with bare feet in 2 ft. of snow.
