PS5 system software update rolls out globally today

Discord Voice Chat, VRR support for 1440p, and additional UX and social features give you more ways to play and connect with friends.

Update: Our new PS5 system software update is rolling out globally today! This blog post has been updated to reflect the global release.

As the PlayStation 5 console continues to evolve, we’re excited to deliver new features to our community. Today, we’re rolling out the next PS5 system software update with a number of fan-requested features, including Discord voice chat and Variable Refresh Rate support for 1440p resolution. We’re also introducing a variety of UX, accessibility and social feature enhancements that make playing with your friends or enjoying your gaming experiences on the PS5 console easier than ever.

Here’s a look at some of the new features:

New Social Features

  • Join a Discord Voice Chat on Your PS5 Console. You can now join Discord voice chats on your PS5 console and easily chat with friends on most other gaming platforms. To start, link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts from your PS5 console, PlayStation.com, or the Discord app on Windows, Mac or mobile device following these steps. Then, use the Discord app on your mobile device or computer to get a Discord voice chat going on your PS5 console (make sure your Discord app is updated to the latest version). You can also let your Discord friends see when you’re online and what you’re playing.
  • Note: if you’ve linked your PlayStation Network and Discord accounts in the past to display what game you’re playing, you’ll need to link your accounts again to grant the new permissions needed for Discord voice chat. If you participated in the system software beta and have already linked your accounts during the beta period, you don’t need to link them again.

  • Start or Request a Share Screen from Your Friend’s Profile. You can now send a Share Screen request or start sharing your screen with a friend, directly from their profile. Simply select the Share Screen icon on your friend’s profile to start a new session.

  • New “Join Game” Icon in Party Chats. On the voice chat card, a joinable icon will be displayed for party members playing a game you can join. You can join the game directly by selecting the player, and then selecting [Join Game] from the menu.
  • New “Friends Who Play” Tile. In game hubs, you can now see which of your friends have the game, who is currently online, and who is currently playing the game. By selecting the tile, you can see what your friends are doing now, and you can also access your friends’ profiles, where you’ll be given more interaction options.

  • Manually Upload Game Captures to PlayStation App. You can now manually select and upload individual screenshots or game clips to PS App from your PS5 console, then easily share them on social media or with your friends.* This feature complements the auto-upload functionality that currently exists on PS App.

New Gameplay and Personalization Options

  • Variable Refresh Rate support for 1440p. You can now enjoy smoother visual performance when using a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display at 1440p resolution, when playing a game that supports VRR.**
  • We’ve also made some updates to the parameters of the PS5 console’s 1440p output test, enabling 1440p support for a wider range of HDMI displays.
    • To check if your HDMI device is compatible, go to [Settings] > [Screen and Video] > [Video Output] > [Test 1440p Output].

  • Game Library Enhancements.
    • You can now also sort and filter games when adding games to a gamelist.
    • You can use filters in your library to easily find PS VR games, as well as PS VR2 titles when PS VR2 launches later this month.

  • Game Presets for Multiplayer Session Preferences. You can set your preferences to manage who can join and who can invite other players to multiplayer sessions you’ve created for supported games.
    • Go to [Settings] > [Saved Data and Game/App Settings] > [Game Presets] > [Online Multiplayer Sessions], and select your preferences in [Who Can Join] and [Who Can Invite].

New Accessibility and Ease-of-use Features

  • PS4 to PS5 Saved Data Migration. We’re making it easier for you to access your PS4 saved data on your PS5 console through two ways:
    • When you download or install a PS4 game on your PS5 console, a notification that PS4 saved data is available in your PlayStation Network cloud storage will appear (if your PS5 console doesn’t already have saved data for the game). Simply select the notification to download your saved data.
    • When you download or install a PS5 game that can load PS4 saved data, such as the PS5 version of a game that was also released on PS4, the same notification will appear (if the game supports this feature).
    • (Note: online storage for saved data requires a PlayStation Plus subscription)

  • PS5 to PS5 Data Transfer. You can now easily transfer the data on your PS5 console, including games, saved data, user profiles, settings, screenshots, and videos, to another PS5 console using a local Wi-Fi network or a LAN cable. You can either transfer the data during the initial PS5 console setup or later from the settings menu. This process doesn’t remove or modify the data on your original PS5 console.

  • Screen Reader Improvements. The screen reader now gives more detailed guidance when navigating the console. It will now tell you which direction you can move from the currently selected component, as well as your current position in a component with multiple items. Additionally, when using the screen reader to view web pages, you’ll now see borders around the section that’s being read aloud.
  • Wireless Device Update for DualSense Wireless Controller. You can now update the DualSense wireless controller device software with a wireless connection. If you have trouble updating the device software wirelessly, connect your controller to your PS5 console using the USB cable to update it. You’ll be able to update wirelessly for the next update.

Game Capture Using Voice Command (Preview): U.S. and U.K. limited release

  • Voice Command now supports using your voice to save video clips of your gameplay.
    • Say “Hey PlayStation, capture that!” to save a video clip of your recent gameplay. The default duration saved is based on your settings.
    • You can also save a specific duration of your gameplay, from 15 seconds to 60 minutes. For example, to save 5 minutes, say “Hey PlayStation, capture the last 5 minutes”.
    • Say “Hey PlayStation, start recording” to manually start a new gameplay recording. You can then say “Hey PlayStation, stop recording” to end the recording and save the video clip.
    • Voice Command (Preview) is currently available in English for beta participants with accounts registered to the U.S. and U.K.

We’re eager to hear your feedback on these new features so let us know your thoughts in the comments!

*Game clips under 3 minutes long that are non-4K can be uploaded to PS App.

**Results may vary depending on the game being played. 1440p video output on PS5 requires a TV or PC monitor that supports 1440p/60Hz, or 1440p/60Hz and 120Hz.

  • nice now i can finally talk to my friends and stream some gameplay on my servers with ease

  • Where’s the themes at?

  • I wish I could try this beta out I’m on discord all the time !

  • Bring back dynamic themes like we had on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

  • So no one else can participate for this?👀 Wish I can 😢

  • Just want to throw that out there that I hope one day VRR gets updated to expand the range. 48 Hz to 120 Hz just isn’t enough. Games with unlocked frame rates often drop below 48 Hz. It would make the PS5 that much more awesome. Thank you for your time. Have a great day.

  • Discord chat is great. What i really like is the voice activated recording. I never use voice commands, but this is quite cool, since on franctic moments, you don’t want to go out to select recording.

One feature i’ve been requesting for nearly 2 years, is to PLEASE allow me to store videos in an external USB drive, rather than taking up huge amount of precious internal disk space. the database could be indexed on the internal drive, but the data for both pictures and videos can, like in my case, grow into hundreds of gigabytes. We already can offload Ps4 games to external disks, surely we can also offload videos?

    pretty PLEASE?

  • Seriously why no vrr on hdmi 2.0? Is there even a native 1440p monitor out there that supports 2.1? I assumed it was only 4k monitor’s that had HDMI 2.1?. So if that was the case why would I want to lower my resolution to 1440p on ps5? Makes no sense

  • Gotta admit, I’m quite dissapointed with the VRR update for 1440p displays. The whole point with people asking for it was to allow VRR for non hdmi 2.1 displays, which is what 1440p displays offer. We really need a proper FreeSync implementation on consoles so we can offer VRR ranges across all types of monitors with Freesync support, regardless of the VRR spec.

  • PLEASE FIX DOLBY VISION AND DOLBY ATMOS ON PS5.

  • what do i need for an invite?

  • Please PlayStation also add folders to PS5 Home Screen. These new updates are cool, but I really would like to organise my Home Screen!! Please!!

  • Can you please add an option to sort games alphabetically in the trophy list in a future update?

  • I have no friends on Discord I wish Discord was not on the PlayStation I had people making fun of me all because I’m autistic

  • thanks for leaving poor folks out by not including ps4 access for discord /s

  • They could put the option to watch Streamings, programs, live sports, YouTube, while we play or use the console’s interface through PIP, it would be great.

  • No PS4 yet Microsoft can run discord on all Xbox’s… smh lost a customer.

  • Can you bring back when you can know if there on apps like Netflix or Hulu when you go on the friends list? I really miss that

  • I would like to add games to my cart then click save games for later. I have to trash the one’s in the cart then buy the one I’m getting today, then add the games I want again to cart. Also I hope someday RockBand will be released again.

  • I was playing Madden 23. Not really much into it…. I wonder when the score is a Blow out. Why is the stadium pack with people. Since PS5 focuses on the Background The Stadium would be empty.

  • Why do I never get invites anymore, but I get PS4 beta codes?

  • Please add more countries for the beta update! Now only in United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany.

  • The game list addition added last time is so bad, I haven’t even seen it on my PS5 since. I don’t even know where to go but if I have to go somewhere else to get to the game list……….. yeah then its bad.

Also, there better be a native PS5 Youtube VR app ready in time for PSVR2’s launch.

  • Really good stuff here. I do wonder if the PS5 save data transfer includes transferring to a USB stick as well, cause that’s something that’s really been missing.

  • Let us play our entire digital playstation library on ps5.

    And a new handheld

  • Very nice! Keep up the great work PS Platform team! I personally would still like to see the return of Dynamic Themes as well.

  • I wish anyone who signed up for the Beta could get access. I love testing out new changes/features but never seem to get the email for the US Beta.

If anyone has a spare US Beta code I’d be very happy to receive it. iiSYNLL (uppercase ii, lowercase LL)

    Thanks!

  • Sony,

It is 6:34pm EST and no beta key is in my inbox. You usually send them out by 5:03pm EST. Did someone forget to hit the button? This was announced at 4:00am EST, and now its 6:35pm EST… when are you going to start rolling out the keys?

  • We need access to our PS5 game saves so we can delete extra saves that some of these games create! Death Stranding has put 60+ auto saves on my system alone! Forbidden West has 20+ saves. And now I can’t back up new games because I hit some 1000 item cloud backup limit.

We can do this with PS4 saves, why not our PS5 game saves?

This makes me want to rage so much…

  • I would love to try this new update out with my new LG 27GR95QE-B OLED monitor. I never get a beta code and this is prime for me to test out

  • I never get invited to these betas anymore and I don’t know why. I got a ton of them on PS4 smh.

  • Allow for PS5 saves to be backed up to a USB!!!

  • Hey Kito1973, mind if I have an invite to the closed PS beta thing. Would love to try out that new Discord feature. If not no worries ^_^

  • This is gonna be fun!

  • Hope I can get a beta code! Need that discord intergration 🤤

  • Please bring what’s new page to PS5! we desperately need it. also, we need to be able to view our followers and following. please and thank you. I hope to see these things added one day.

  • Nice update but there are still so many things left:

    – No folders
    – No themes
    – Voice chat still outputting from the awful Dualsense speaker. Let us choose where to output!
    – No possibility to backup PS5 saves to a USB stick. If this never happens don’t put cloud save behind a paywall. Microsoft and Steam does this by free!!!!
    – Improve backwards compatibility! Don’t let your amazing gaming library die! So many amazing games from PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP/PSVITA. And no, cloud gaming is not sufficient!
    – Since online gameplay will never become free again at least create a low tier service just for it. Like 2€/3€ per month but no discounts, no free games included, only online gameplay
    – Improve VRR, limiting low limit to 48Hz is bad.
    – Improve audio 3D for TV/Hi-Fi systems. At this moment it is really bad not worth it.

  • If voice chat supports video, that would finally be a reason for the PS5 camera!

  • Loving this beta so far. Loving the support for Wireless updates of the controllers. It was so nice to just update without having to fish out a USB-C cable that I haven’t seen since the last update. PSVR filters, a huge thank you for that. This is just an awesome collection of updates and surpasses the in-game-xmb update from over a decade ago.

I like the data transfer features, but I think I have an edge case that might not get consideration, but I think it should. It’s something that even drives me nuts on my SteamDeck and my Gaming PC, it applies equally to the PS5.

My friends and I tend to gather once a month to play games. Usually of the online variety. The wives and girlfriends go out and do their own thing while we take the day to just be a bunch of gamers. This sometimes results in a few members of our group not having the right games we agreed upon installed. This can be a pain for a game like CoD.

    So here’s the Ask:
Can we have one more data transfer option to allow us to do a local transfer between PS5’s with a different account? Obviously we should be connected to PSN to verify licenses or that both consoles have the disc. While I do have a 1gig internet connection, PSN isn’t always going to guaranty that speed. With two systems using SSD, they could transfer something like CoD in a few minutes instead of I think it was 58 minutes with 3 people downloading the game over my internet connection, while I sit there with the game ready to go. That’s when we have our little lan party at my place, not all of my friends are as fortunate to have a fiber drop. So speeds can be slower.

Not expecting it. It’s an edge case. Just would be a nice to have.

  • VRR for HDMI 2.0 please!!! It can be done

  • Where is the update for native 3D audio for hometheater???

  • URGENT: This update broken VRR on my Samsung QN90A. PS5 now reports that my TV is no longer compatible with VRR.

  • VRR won’t turn on at 1440p. Yes I have the beta and my tv supports VRR.

  • Wireless controller update is handy, I guess. On that note, I still have this issue since launch (that I read nothing about) where free look (right joystick) gets erratic, less smooth and less sensitive following certain actions. In Returnal it triggers after a cutscene or getting close to that co op orb, in AC Valhalla after fast traveling, … Even pausing a game can trigger it and it’s very common and in most games with free look. The only thing I can do is restart the game after it happened, that always fixes it. Maybe it’s something related to the SSD, I’ve never experience this issue on any previous Playstation console. I’m pretty sure it’s not my actual joystick even though the effect is somewhat comparable to joystick drift (it doesn’t move on its own, but free look controls feel “looser” and “less precise” when the issue hits). I’m not a tech guy so I have no idea, I’ll try using a different controller for a while.

  • Bring back Dynamic themes. I also want to be able to buy avatars again (can’t even do that on the web store).

  • Question ! Why, at least in my case, I don’t have the option of manual recording in 1440p, but only 1080p. Anyone else having the same problem? Otherwise, my console is connected to a gaming monitor IPS, 2K (1440p), 1 ms, with Gsync HDR, but the manual recording menu is simply missing!

  • Sony, are you confirming that vrr will NOT work on my 1440p, 144hz monitor with HDMI 2.0??? If a monitor has HDMI 2.1 it minus well be 4k. I don’t get why 2.0 is getting shafted. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I feel 1440p with HDMI 2.0 is significantly more common than 2.1 Can someone explain please?

  • Add game sharing for all devices on your home network. I’m fortunate enough to have two PS 5’s but can’t share games in the same house?!

    • Why? All you do is add the account with the games on both machines and set the 2nd ps5 as primary for main account and set it as share with all accounts on ps5. The first one you don’t need to set up as prime as it will just play what’s on system while it’s online.

  • Will we be able to stream our screen while on the discord voice chat? and if we can will we be able to change it to 4k or will its be maxed at 1080p

  • If its not too much trouble, does anyone have a code for the discord beta? Ive been waiting for a code for a while.
