Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection launches this year

They’re lean, they’re green, and they're back with 13 classic arcade and console hits coming to PlayStation.

Hi everyone! We’re glad to finally unveil the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection! Ever since we started releasing collections, the response from our fans has been emphatic on what we should do next – “Give us the Turtles!” Together with Nickelodeon and Digital Eclipse, we’re compiling one of the most comprehensive retro game collections ever.

It was clear from the start The Cowabunga Collection needed the entire western release of 8-bit and 16-bit games, their Japanese versions, and of course the TMNT Arcade games. Together we’re bringing all 13 console and arcade games and their regional versions to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2022.

We could tell right away that Digital Eclipse is a natural fit for this project. Digital Eclipse are adept developers and video game historians, having breathed new life to some of the most beloved video game classics. Beyond their technical capabilities is a genuine connection for the TMNT franchise.  Together, we added modern quality-of-life features as well as compiling a load of extras that fans will appreciate. Combined with Rewind and Save Anytime, we’re designing custom game guides harkening to the aesthetic of the video game magazines from the 80’s and 90’s to help get players through some of those notoriously tricky parts…you know what we’re talking about!

Our partners at Nickelodeon provided amazing imagery from the original cartoons series and comic books and helped connect the franchise from the different mediums. While bringing our heroes in a half shell back to the surface, we were immediately taken back to a time where we grabbed three other friends to save April from a burning building, struggled to swim through obstacles and prevent the dam from exploding, or discovered that there were secret areas where Casey Jones slammed Raphael into the ground.

Instead of pumping a machine full of quarters, the Cowabunga Collection’s Arcade games (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time) lets you and up to three friends have the arcade experience at home on your couch or online. The 8-bit TMNT II: The Arcade Game, TMNT III: The Manhattan Project, and the 16-bit TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, and The Hyperstone Heist will also have all the local multi-player fun of yesteryear.

To complete the collection, we included the handheld titles. To some they’re a deeper cut, but these three handheld adventures had some of the best side-scrolling action on any platform. TMNT III: Radical Rescue (1993), employs a gameplay style later popularized by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) and sets players off as Michelangelo on an adventure to free his brothers. Each ninja turtle Michelangelo rescues brings new abilities and opens-up more of the map to explore. A game truly ahead of its time.

Finally, the three one-on-one fighting games: Tournament Fighters. We dreamed of pitting our favorite characters against each other, and these games let our dreams come true. The two 16-bit games have been true classics with players mastering every move. But we knew we had to include the last 8-bit game Konami ever released. Considered one of the best fighting games on that console, and one that had been overlooked over the years, we couldn’t wait to give this game the attention it deserves.

30 years is a long to hang on for a collection of these masterpieces, but we hope you’ll find that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection has been worth the wait.

  • I’m so excited for this! What’s even funnier, is that me and a friend of mine were literally just reminiscing about the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games, and then this collection gets announced a few days later! Woot!

I hope “launches this year” means sooner, rather than later! I love these collections so much (I have the Castlevania Collections, Contra Collections, and Disney Afternoon Collections). I’m a sucker for nostalgia, especially when they include some of my favorite games from when I was a kid!

    • i hope they include options for full screen and cropped screen at the very least. some people don’t like playing with the cartoon window. however i doubt they will put very much effort into these releases. I however am excited to play the original tmnt arcade game. i just hope the price isn’t more than 30 bucks if they don’t include that manty options

    • Can we get the Arcade version of TMNT 2 the Arcade game on top of the original NES version?
That would be awesome, the NES version has 2 new levels while the Arcade version has better graphics and game play.

I saw we are getting the NES version, I’m just wondering if we are also getting the Arcade version.

    • Nevermind, just saw that TMNT Arcade game is indeed included as well as the TMNT 4 Arcade versions, both support Online Play.
      Awesome, Radical, Cowabunga.

  • MidnightDragonDX

Day 1. My childhood right here.

  • I love you!!!!! I am so glad the SNES version of Turtles in Time is included.

  • Likely will get this on the switch for my son. As far as lazy Konami port collections go i will accept this, just like i did with Castlevania. You cannot expect much from Konami, i do wish tmnt nes was part if this for the completion sake especially since they put in the game boy games but whatever. If you guys have patience these collections drop 25-75% in a matter of months.

All in all glad to see it and will enjoy playing with my son. Without having a son that loves the turtles i don’t see a reason to go back but i get nostalgia is a big thing for a lot of people.

    • In what way is this collection “lazy”? It does include all the NES games, as well as everything else Konami published on everything but PC. Are you that bummed that Manhattan Missions didn’t make the cut? 😀

    • I followed the PS5 page for this and it clearly itemizes everything. tmnt 1 for nes is in and it has a comprehensive list of the turtles games.

Let’s call it an average port collection with a few games given online support and button remapping. This is good on paper, we will see how it all shakes out on release. I’ll be picking it up launch or on sale ps5/ or switch depending on that. It’s not as if i’m a hater, i’ve bought konami games and port collections long since they have retreated from the games industry leaving just efootball as their “big” game.

people getting triggered over calling port collections lazy, when there is barebones options and fearures, no artwork behind the scenese, no music players and all the rest of what is on an actual quality re release of old games.

look at the screen shots my guy, not exactly anything more than bare bones. We will see in the end and for what msrp price.

just an fyi all the konami collections have been on at 75% off, and the more recent port collections like castlevania advance will be the same. (and at 75% off ill pick that one up too)

    • Even if this released at $60, you’re saving money. TMNT 4 alone by itself costs a couple hundred now. The GB games are also not cheap.

There is great value in this collection.

  • The fact Turtles in times SNES version is there makes this an absolute must buy

  • This is soo much yes. And with the netplay added omfg. This has been a dream of mine since I was like 8. I am so ready. Was def. The highlight of this state of play for me. Let me know when to purchase my money is already ready

  • ALL THREE FIGHTING GAME VERSIONS AND THE JAPANESE VERSON OF THE SNES GAME!!!!!!!!! Dang, that’s the RIGHT way to do it, Day 1 purchase, thank you!

  • Since we’re on the subject, any change Turtles In Time: Re-Shelled could get a re-release?

    • I hear you, but that was actually developed and published by Ubisoft.

    • And it was critically panned. I played it and it didn’t feel right but that’s just me. Arcade and Snes are the superior games.

Considering Nickelodeon has the rights to the Turtles this is the only reason we are getting this at all, some shared profit deal with Konami.

This is also the reason Turtles in Time didn’t make it onto the Snes Classic (a crime) or the snes switch app, and judging by this it never will make the switch online app.

  • You have no idea how happy this made me…

  • I love the work of Digital Eclipse, but dude, you’ve gotta include a platinum trophy! It’s weird that so many of the collections you’ve done have a lesser trophy set. 13 games, 4 turtles, there should be plenty to do.

  • Thank you for this! My collection of all my retro games etc were stolen. I had all these and each one were my favorite. This helps make up for my missing tmnt games.
Sad my mom wouldn’t get to join me. We use to play all the turtles games but our favorite was turtles in time.

Day one buy on the digital store for sure.

  • I can say that it has been way too long for this to happen. Truth be told, I was not able to play many of these games; I only was able to play the original arcade game, the original NES game, and Turtles in Time for SNES. That might be enough for some, but I really do want to play all of these on a modern system.

I will get this for PS4, but I hope that you will release this for other systems – primarily the Switch.

    • it’s going to be on switch, they made no mention of exclusivity and all of the other konami collections are there.

For my son this is a better purchase on switch than ps5 so i expect we will see the nintendo announcement soon enough.

  • Woah, woah, woah… What about Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled? Would be nice if that was included with the rest of the Turtles in Time games, considering you can’t buy it from digital storefronts anymore.

    • That one’s probably a little harder to include since Re-Shelled was both published and developed by Ubisoft and this collection is strictly Konami, at the moment.

    • Isn’t reshelled just a reskinned version of Turtles in Time Arcade? I have it on the PS3. I feel like the original arcade version will be just as good if not better. The SNES port is arguably the best one anyways. Extra levels and all that.

  • Uber excited.

My one question is, will this include the original soundtrack? Does this mean we get to hear ‘Pizza Power’ while the turtles bust through the screen?

    • I was wondering about that, too, since the Arcade unlockables on the PS2 TMNTs didn’t have the original soundtracks. But considering the trailer had the original arcade music, I’ll be cautiously optimistic.

  • TESD4ColorDemons

Sounds great! But when will it be out?

  • Yes! I was just talking about turtles today.

It’s amazing the one game I care about being announced in this “state of play” is games I played 20 years ago. Ain’t that something…

  • Looks great, please do a Goemon Collection next!

  • I can’t wait for this. These games are responsible for some of my best memories of my teenage years.

  • The Cowabunga

  • There the world’s most fearsome fighting team! Turtles count it off! Heroes in a half shell! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…Turtle Power! It’s a shell of a town! Cowabunga!

  • Must-have!

  • This is honestly amazing and a dream come true for us older TMNT fans. I grew up on these games and never would have imagined that they’d be released in such an amazing package. Hats off to everyone who helped to make this happen. I am definitely getting this day 1. What an absolute treat!

  • Buying this TMNT Cowabunga Collection on day 1 on my PS5 & Nintendo Switch. I’ll also buy it for my wife on her Nintendo Switch. Nothing but Turtle Power in our house 🐢🖖🏽

  • I’m glad I grown up playing with the TMNT games. I will purchase this collection sometimes in the future. Looking forward the release date.

  • Can’t wait isn’t Shredders Revenge coming aswell with 4 player co-op.
It would be unreal if they did a co-op online multiplayer 4-6 player(if you want to add Jones,April,Splinter) open world TMNT! It would be the next Spider-Man like hit for PlayStation.

    • I use to Play TMNT When I Was a Kid and SomeTimes I Was Watching There Movie Cuz I Usually own Their Movie and I Use to Have The old Play Station But Now I Can Not Wait until The New TMNT Game Comes Out

  • Can’t wait isn’t Shredders Revenge coming aswell with 4 player co-op.

    Anyways I’m excited

  • Shell Yeah! 🐢 🍕

  • I am excited and I’m looking forward of getting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection for PlayStation 5 when it gets released this year along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge for PS4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection looks great and will be enjoying the 80’s and 90’s TMNT games for arcade, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy and they are excellent. I would like arcade games of The Simpsons, X-Men, G.I. Joe, Bucky O’Hare, Sunset Riders, Wild West of C.O.W. Boys Moo Mesa, Mystic Warriors get released on modern platforms. I would like Adventure Island Collection released. Thank you very much.

  • This is great news. I am very excited for this. Can I please request one day that you guys consider making the PS2 era Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games remastered including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) , Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus (2004) , Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare (2005). I get serious nostalgia from playing those games and would love to play those again on PS5. It would be a dream come true. Please consider, I will be forever grateful. Thanks.

  • Can’t F’N wait! Been waiting and talking about this for years now. I need to know a exact date so I can pre-order

  • This is literally the collection I have wanted for so long, I can’t wait!

I had hoped for years that Nintendo would rerelease the original TMNT games and of course they never came through.

One more reason I love PlayStation!

  • Thank you so much. It will be a blast!.

  • Can we work on a Gi-Joe collection too. Konami is all there for you call Hasbro and let’s get it done.

    Thank you.

  • Please don’t keep those static images around the sides of the screen. Give us the option to use Full Screen.

  • Will there be any online co-op with any of these game’s in The Cowabunga Collection? I’d love to buy it but I want to enjoy it with friends online together.

  • Cowabunga!!!

    \[T]/

  • What day will it be available

  • I been playing the TMNT games as a kid and I am very excited to get back into playing these games again after so long! And you all included the Gameboy games which makes this collection even better. Waiting for a release date and we are golden! :D Thank you to Nickelodeon and Konami for this! Will get this for my PS4 and Switch. ;)

  • Your multiplayer same screen style fighting with TMNT was amazing I’d love to see a game like that again

  • Plz do a great job on this and not ruin it. Alot of Nostalgic memories in your hands!!!
Definitely want to pick this up!

  • Hi when is the pre order dropping? Their being so elusive about the release date. Im ready to cowabunga my wallet to pre order a slice of these , to me, priceless classic TMNT games it’s a dream come true! I wish my brother was alive to play these with me. He loved TMNT he grew up in the 80s and saw the show and movie when they aired. As a 90s boy, i too grew up on turtles and dbz but in re runs of tmnt 1987. I’ve played all of these on their OG consoles. I hope a pre order bonus PS4 Theme background wallpaper for the xmb will come with it, or some exclusive DLC. If a physical disc, hopefully a leonardo or rand turtle action figure will come with it. Really counting on a Theme and avatar set though. Hopefully it appears on playstation store soon. Tmnt shredders revenge i bet kick started this set. I will be buying digital and physical if there will be one. A collector’s edition would be amazing. What’s up with Themes nowa days and avatars on psn store? There hasn’t been ANY new ones in almost 10 months. Do they make them for ps5 only now? Karate chop your wallet folks because if it’s 30 seconds late, no full price cause wise man say “forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late video games, dude!” Haha
If your a ninja turtle like me, you’ll love this game and comment. Have a great day everyone.

  • the wait is gonna b hard to do but when it comes out it will b worth the wait
