Players’ Choice: Horizon Forbidden West voted February’s best new game

PS Blog readers showed up for Guerrilla's long-awaited follow-up, but Elden Ring fans made a strong effort.

It was a fierce battle, but Guerrilla’s far-future follow-up rose to the top of the Players’ Choice poll for February 2022. Tarnished around the world didn’t go out without a fight, though — FromSoft’s exemplary open-world debut took the runner-up spot for the month. Congratulations to both teams on the well-deserved recognition!

Salutations! This is going to be a tough one — I can only fit three games in that image up top, but there have been some quality releases these past few weeks. Are you finding time to play everything you want to, or are you having to make some tough decisions?

Hit the comments and let us know what’s claiming your gamin’ time… after voting in the poll, of course.

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Demon’s Souls and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

  • Poll was closed… but Elden Ring would have been my +1. Best Game of the CENTURY! ;)

And gt7 for this month but forspoken might be great too will see, anyway you slice it we have alot of great games out an on the way

  • Horizon Forbidden West blew me away.

Already played over 100 hours, full of beautiful scenery, characters, colours, great dialogue, story and combat.. I can hardly wait for the DLC’s or the inevitable Horizon 3.

  • Elden Ring.

  • Sifu

  • Elden Ring is the Best

  • Forbidden West is a masterpiece. built upon lessons learned from Zero Dawn and visually stunning. great to see it win

  • What happened to Share of the Week?

  • Congratulations 🎉

Deserves much more than that. GOTY for me.
Very very very amazing game 💗🔥💛

  • I’m happy that Horizon Forbidden West was finally represented properly. The game improves from the original in virtually every way and it’s truly a benchmark visually as well as the next gen showcase.

The settlements are so amazing and the addition of machine strike and real puzzles. The gear and the skill tree is massively upgraded. The open world is more detailed and interesting. The new enemies are incredible. Of course the story is amazing as usual I could go on.

I expect Gran Turismo to top the list next month as it’s probably the best circuit racer I’ve ever played. Truly a great time to be on PlayStation.

  • Elden Ring is one of the most overrated games in history.

Not saying it’s a bad game. It’s a good game. But proportionate to the reviews, it’s just nothing special. Horizon (after 30 hours and going) is an evolution of its predecessor in so many ways and has an amazing world to explore.

Souls Open world is great. But it’s still souls open world. No story or world building depth, at least nowhere near what Guerilla has achieved. But the media is enjoying watching Elden defeat Horizon in sales. They even ignored how glitchy the game is on PC.

    • Forbidden West won because it is tailored to the average mainstream “gamer” I guess. Pretty much all your points apply to Elden Ring as well. I platinumed both games, and even though Horizon was an amazing game, I got much more for my money with Elden Ring. It’s just the better open world setting. Nowadays I don’t want to climb another tower or do some “race” or gather another 10 parts of that since I played Ubisoft games. PC problems surely were bad, dunno if that got fixed. I reckon some graphic cards didn’t get used at all.

    • I agree

  • My take away from all this

needs to get a life. You say a whole lot for someone who never once had something of substance to say.

  • Great choice! Horizon: Forbidden West well deserved. It would have gotten my vote as well. Had I known sooner when the poll was open 😔 I sent a DM to Sony asking when will the voting posts be available. Nobody bothered to message me back. Sony staff you have to do better with responding to the gamer consumer community.

  • I am amazed of a PSN developer that’s not out to be hated like Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann; middle finger to that fool. Props to Guerrilla Games for bringing me a sequel that I actually like.

  • Lol, I’m guessing in a poll that ended on Feb 24th. Exactly one day before Elden Rings release. Its a good game but Elden Ring is exceptional. How many Tweets, Reddit posts, or youtube videos do you see about Horizon right now? Everything is all about Elden Ring three weeks later.
