New PS5 and PS4 System Software Betas Roll Out Tomorrow

PS5 beta includes new UI enhancements, party chat options and accessibility features.

Our second PS5 system software beta is kicking off tomorrow with new ways to personalize your console experience across party chat, Game Base and accessibility settings. We’re also rolling out a PS4 system software beta tomorrow for players to try out the community-requested Open Parties feature, which is also coming in the PS5 beta.

In addition, for PS5 beta participants in the U.S. and U.K, we’re previewing a feature that enables voice commands for finding and opening games and apps, as well as controlling media playback (English language setting only).

While access to the PS5 and PS4 betas will be open to selected participants in applicable countries*, the final system software updates will be available globally later this year. If you’re selected to participate in the betas, you’ll receive an email invitation when the updates are available to download tomorrow. As with previous system software betas, some features available during this phase may not make it into the final version or may see significant changes. Here’s a sneak peek:

New Party Chat Options

In response to community feedback, we’ve made some updates to the Parties system:

  • Open and Closed Parties (PS5 and PS4 betas)
    • When you start a party, you can now select either an open party or a closed party:
      • An open party lets your friends see and join the party without an invite. Friends of party members can also join.
      • A closed party is only for players you invite.
    • Note: in Game Base on PS5 and Party on PS4, if you select [Open Party] when starting a party, only players using the beta version of the PS5 or PS4 system software will be able to join. To start a party that players who aren’t using the beta version can also join, select [Closed Party].

  • Voice chat reporting feature update (PS5 beta)
    • If you want to report something that someone in a party said, there are now visual indicators for you to identify who was speaking. This will help PlayStation Safety take appropriate action based on your report. You can learn more about this feature here.
  • Share Play update (PS5 beta)
    • Start Share Play directly from the voice chat card. You no longer need to start Share Screen first to use Share Play.

  • Voice chat volume (PS4 beta)
    • You can now individually adjust the voice chat volume of each player in a party on PS4, just like on PS5.

PS5 Game Base Enhancements

  • Voice chats are now called parties. For easier access, we’ve divided the Game Base menu into three tabs: Friends, Parties and Messages.

  • From the Game Base control menu and cards, you can now:
    • View all your friends under the [Friends] tab in the control menu, or access the player search feature and friend requests through links on this tab.
    • Add a player to a group or create a new group directly from Game Base in the Control Center. You can also send text messages, quick messages, images, video clips, and view a group’s shared media from this card.

  • When someone in a party is sharing their screen, you’ll now see the (on air) icon.
  • We’ve made it easier to decline friend requests by adding a [Decline] button to your friend request list.

New PS5 UI Features

  • Filter by genre
    • We’ve added an option to filter your game collection by genre, letting you quickly find specific types of game experiences.
  • Keep in Home
    • You can now keep the games or apps you choose on your home screen by selecting “Keep in Home” with the (options) button.
    • You can keep a maximum of five games and apps on each home screen with this feature.

  • Increased apps on the home screen
    • You can now have a total of 14 games and apps appear on your home screen.
  • Trophies UI update
    • We’ve updated the visual design of trophy cards and the trophy list. You can also see suggestions for which trophies to earn on the trophy tracker and access it from the Control Center whenever you’re playing a game.

  • Start Share Screen from the Create menu
    • From the Create menu, you can now start a Share Screen and stream your gameplay to an open party.

New Accessibility Features

  • More Screen Reader languages
    • Screen Reader, which reads aloud on-screen text and provides spoken guidance for operating the console, is now supported in six additional languages: Russian, Arabic, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and Korean.
    • This expands Screen Reader support to 15 languages, including the current ones (United States English, United Kingdom English, Japanese, Italian, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French and Canadian French).
  • Mono audio for headphones
    • You can now enable mono audio for headphones so the same audio is played from both the left and right headphones, instead of a stereo or 3D audio sound mix. This feature provides an added option to enhance the PS5 audio experience, particularly for players with unilateral hearing loss.**

  • Check marks for enabled settings
    • You can now show a check mark on enabled settings so you can easily see that they’re turned on.

Voice Command (Preview): U.S. and U.K. limited release

  • We’re also testing a feature that enables voice commands for finding and opening games, apps, and settings, as well as controlling media playback on the PS5 console.
  • This feature is currently available in English for beta participants with accounts registered to the U.S. and U.K.
  • To get started, enable Voice Command (Preview) from the Settings menu. Then, call out “Hey, PlayStation!” and ask your PS5 console to find a game, open an app or setting, or control playback while enjoying a movie, TV show or song.

  • You can help us improve the feature through our feedback program, which will sometimes record your voice commands (in accordance with our Privacy Policy) and let you provide instant feedback from time to time. You can turn this feature off at any time within system settings (see above). This feature never records audio for child accounts.
  • We’re in an early testing phase for this feature and will be closely assessing it and listening to your feedback throughout the beta. For more details, check out this page.

Thanks to our beta community for helping us test these new features. Which ones are you most excited for?

*PS5 and PS4 beta access will be available to selected participants in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France (same countries as our last system software beta).

**Players can enjoy the mono audio feature through headphones or headsets connected via USB or the headphone jack (Bluetooth is not supported). Mono audio for PS5 is not supported when playing PS VR games.

  • Add a search to trophies please

  • Thats nice and all but it is really time to give us that 1440p option

    • Sony doesn’t make 1440p monitors so they won’t add it they want you to buy their broken buggy crappy 4K TVs that are still waiting for software updates and software features almost two years later

  • what sony supose to do is fix a update copy I have game update 400mb it takes about 30 sec to download but update copy takes half an hour on ps 5 what is increadible slow my brother have xbox and he have same game update but to him it takes only 2 min of updating game versus mine 30 min it is a joke

  • I’d like to see themes make a return on the PS5. That’s something the PS4 has over the PS5 at the moment.

    • It’s Sony don’t expect much lol it should’ve been there at launch of ps5 why would they take away a feature that ps4 had it doesn’t make sense

    • And PS4 being able to keep track of time played. Ps5 has this. Steam, Xbox, and switch have always had this. No excuse as to why it shouldn’t have been on the PS4 from the start.

I also agree with themes. Odd that Ps5 does not have this.

  • RETURN “PS COMMUNITY” feature asap! This was an unique feature, which allows to find players among the world! Discord is not an alternative

  • This is the second time I’ve been sent a PS4 beta code instead of PS5. What’s the deal? Guess I’m not missing anything anyway with still no VRR, 1440p, folders, or quick resume.

  • Hi.thanks for everything.

  • We need 1440p support

  • Sony где VRR ?

  • 1) FOLDERS
    2) THEMES

That’s what is missing on the PS5 and has been requested by so many people already.

  • Ah yes. Nothing better than taking 2 years to implement something that was working perfectly on the previous console. Game base was a terrible idea and they’re just slowly finding ways to shave corners off square wheels to make them round again. Just uncouple messages from the party system, return to the PS4 UI, let me turn off cards I don’t want, ESPECIALLY the trophy card suggestions, and be done. The PS4 UI was perfect. Also revert the short press vs long press function of the PS button. Needlessly reversing what it did for PS5 was the definition fixing what wasn’t broke. PS5 is a decent console but the UI changes are the definition of reinventing the wheel.

  • I have a ps5 and ps4 and only received the ps4 public beta. Will I still get the ps5 one?

  • come on sony where the 1440p & vrr series x has had this from day 1 ps5 need this update

  • still no native 1440p support and no DLNA Media Player

  • So I have a lot of friends that are so quiet it would be awsome to keep the individual turn up turn down the person feature because I feel if people are trying to be quiet so they don’t wake the family would be much better to turn them up or down

  • PS4 system Software beta count me in

  • This question was probably better Suited in the last update with extended storage but I have to put it out there. As far as anyone knows the Max Capacity is a 4tb SSD my question is if not now and we just don’t know then in a later update would they increase it too 8tb ssd?

  • Reverting on that party change I see but also making it better. I welcome the changes

You know having themes on PS5 would be nice or some ability to change the system music. Heck I would just want the User Select/log in music as the Home screen music. It just sounds way better

  • Themes folders vrr browser all we need

  • Nechápu že PlayStation nedá 1440p a Vrr podporu, když spousta hráčů hraje na 2k monitorech.Ptam se proč?Důvod je asi prostý-byznys a to v podobě prodaných kusů Sony televizi!!!

  • How do I join beta and get early access to features?

  • This new ways to organize the games is good. But please I really want to use my themes in my ps5. Plz add themes to ps5.

  • PS4互換付いてるPS5買えないのですが(*´Д`)
    どうにかして下さいよ( 一一)

  • Where is native 1440p support??????

  • I really miss the “What’s New” feature from the PS4, can we please bring that back for the PS5.
It was great turning on the PlayStation and I could easily see which of my friends had logged on earlier, if they had bought a new game, or had they finally finished a game and got a trophy.
Now, all we can see is if they are currently online and playing something. There is no easy way to see that they were on earlier.
I regularly used that feature, “Oh Rich has bought that new DLC, Cool I might get that as well then”

  • No VRR or 1440p. Why am I not surprised?

  • What about 1440p support?

  • What about PS5 1440p support?

    • Where is 1440p support! Let alone vrr??? Sony, wake up. So many of us have stuck by you because of the amazing games you are giving us. Now we have the PS5, let us play these amazing games on what we want and how we want… These are far from “Next Gen” features anyway.
Back to crying in the corner…

  • Any plans to add the “Output at 1080p/24 Hz” option in Video Playback Settings on the PS5? Both for 1080p and 4K UHD playback on PS5 of course. The option is there on the PS3 and the PS4 but not on the PS5.

I have a Sony X90J TV and it doesn’t handle the 24p signal from the PS5 properly. Extremely frustrating considering they are both from the same company. This option fixes the issue on PS3 and PS4.

  • **I should already be in beta, will it come over the air or will we get a code for this update?**

  • I retract my previous statement. I just seen a pic of the main trophy list from the beta and yall still haven’t fixed how bad it looks. I guess yall never will fix it. Oh well I guess I’ll just keep playing on my PS4.

  • You should have had HDMI VRR on day 1. Why has there been no update about the release of this feature? Dreadful communication about a feature which is required.

  • If you don’t add 1440p support, I’ll just change your console to Xbox.

  • When is this gonna be a official thing

  • We need a VRR please guys !!!

  • No date available in New Zealand yet, expected time?

  • Still no 1440p or VRR. Cool…

  • Poor support from Sony regarding VRR and 1440p support! One year after the PlayStation 5 release and still no VRR support …poor, very poor Sony! Microsoft has VRR and 1440P implemented since Xbox One release years ago! What’s worst is the silence on the matter after telling people that the feature would be implemented a year ago!Sony still has not add the promised VRR to some 2020 TV models and frankly after the poor implementation they made of the feature on Some 2021 e 22 models o have a felling that PS5 VRR support it’s just talk and no substance.Well i can always buy multiplatform games for my Xbox Series X and leave PlayStation 5 just for exclusives.Wake up Sony!

  • Beta communities abuzz with energetic chatter. Refreshing

  • Why is there no VRR in this update, Microsoft launched VRR along with Xbox Series X in 2019. Why Sony is not listening to its customers ?
According to sony VRR was supposed to be added as a software update after console release. PS5 was released for more than 12 months ago, what taking so long?

  • I am looking forward to saying ” Hey PlayStation, switch to 1440p mode”

  • Please Add dynamic themes

  • Keep the QoL improvements coming!

  • Hey Playstation, thank you so much for being a beta tester with the special invite since last time I didn’t get one which I was so surprised since I usually get selected all the time which is so special to me. Anyway, I think you or maybe I forgot the biggest hidden feature accessibility new feature added unless it was from the last system update since that seemed forever ago, the music equalizer probably has new fonts if you’ve selected bold but it really clearly labels +6, -6, but NEW IS THE LABELING OF BASS, LOWS, MID, HIGHS, and TREBLE such a nice music addition to music lovers like me where music listening and sounds are so important to us with feeling that special connection but now I know what I’m really affecting that I kind of didn’t know before. Finally, I would love more custom equalizer options from 3 to 6 well more than 6 let’s say just like you increased the number of apps and games to more, Hopefully we can have a 360 reality music experience that you advertise and get rid of distortions like when you hear songs based on the equalizer on how you adjust but Spotify and Apple Music have been updated so it’s probably helped but hopefully the Pulse 3D Audio Set especially the next one upgrade will have Hi Resolution blue tooth wireless

  • I’m mainly interested in a time tracking feature on PS4. PS5 now has it, and that’s great.. but what about PS4?? Why hasn’t this happened yet? With Steam, Xbox, and the switch being able to keep track of play times, there’s no excuse as to why the PS4 can’t as well.

  • This is becoming a joke… All my PS5 wants is 1440p support, vrr and… That’s it tbh! Just like other consoles have had for ages! I’m not interested in shouting at my PS5 to open games and do whatever else, so why are they even wasting time testing such ideas. As for waiting for vrr to launch their own TVs, they need to do a lot more for people to consider Sony displays for gaming! Input lag and a whole lot more compared to other brands. I’m really worried that no one at Sony is seeing how many players they have lost or could have had, if these basic gaming features had have been provided on release… Certainly by now!?? For the Player’s… But When? Please Guys, so much is right on this platform, but you will loose your older mature gaming audience, who expect the power of PS5 to be used in meaningful ways gamers want and use.

  • All these updates are very cool. Will you be fixing the dualsense haptics on iOS remote-play soon? I love remote play but I really miss the haptic features.

  • Forgot about the best new addition maybe in the music accessibility like labeled bass, lows, mid, highs, and treble equalizer so I really know what frequencies I’m controlling for even if I’m not an audiologist or acoustic. Please add more custom equalizer setting profiles especially since you increase the number of apps and games on the Home Screen in this update. I really want the Pulse 3D audio set in an update or when the next hardware version comes out to have to 360 reality, Dolby Atmos, High def Wireless, best processor to upscale so we can have the best experience with highs and lows with music lovers such as myself, including what the Pulse already specializes in gun shooting video game sounds setting equalizer, do a movie and tv equalizer since every different digital media element has a different uniqueness to it like color, frames per second, sound perceptions, etc since every human being is unique in their own way.
