We Are OFK: indiepop music biopic game revealed for PS5 & PS4

Chat with the band about the sparkling making-of-the-band series coming 2022.

Hey all, I’m Teddy Dief (they/them), creative director of Team OFK, coming to PS4 and PS5. You might know the last game I co-designed, Hyper Light Drifter. I’m here with Itsumi Saito (she/her),from our music teammates – the indiepop band OFK.

Itsumi: Hiii, I’m Itsumi Saito keyboardist and manager of OFK! We performed our first song “Follow/Unfollow” at The 2020 Game Awards. You might know it from… wherever you listen to music!

Teddy: We’re so hype to be in State of Play! Itsu and I are here to talk about our upcoming music biopic game & E.P., We Are OFK.

We Are OFK: indiepop music biopic game revealed for PS5 & PS4

Itsumi: In a lot of game stories, the villain is a dragon, a sword man, an evil corporation. That’s not our kind of story. In We Are OFK, the villain is… the struggles you face trying to create something: imposter syndrome, heartbreak, miscommunication, people with different dreams and priorities. It’s really hard to make music, games, art, videos, novels, whatever! That’s the story we want to tell. Our story, of how our band got together in Los Angeles and how, so far, we haven’t screwed it up.

Teddy: Our development team related to your story, because our experiences making games and animation feel a lot like yours making a band. I’m so glad y’all agreed to let us make a game about you.

Itsumi: Teen Me would be so proud that I’m a videogame protagonist. AND a super gay one.

Teddy: You’re the hero we need.

Itsumi: Hey thanks. Oo tell them about OFK’s gameplay!

Teddy: We Are OFK is a five-episode series, featuring:

  • Fully-voiced interactive dialogue from a star-studded cast
  • Emotional texting, thirst texting, emoji spamming
  • Five Interactive Music Videos premiering new songs by OFK

Itsumi: The music videos! I ~can’t~ wait to share our songs with everyone!

Teddy: Yesss! We designed the music videos to let players participate visually with the music, so no matter how musical you are (or not), you can feel musical as you play!

Itsumi: It’s weird ~ The story is about how our band got together, but as we worked on the game, it kinda feels like the band got bigger. We’re kinda all a band now! The artists, programmers, the actors who voice us in the game!

Teddy: We Are All OFK.

Itsumi: Lol shut up that’s so dorky.

Teddy: We Are all dorky.

Itsumi: Okay true. I love this team!

Teddy: We love you back.

We Are OFK releases for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2022, alongside OFK’s debut E.P.

  • I’m not sure if this game is my cup of tea or not, but I loved the humor and style of the trailer. Great job, guys.

  • I liked the diversity of the trailer, and especially the treatment of characters that appeared as male (no offense if they’re not).

  • WTF is this??? Is it even a game? Hard Phookin’ pass.

  • This legit almost made me wanna sell my PS5

  • More woke nonsense. So sick of far left ideology and identity politics infesting so much of the industry. All it does is divide people.

    • Nothing more divisive than including new demographics of people, am I right?

Your reactionary mindset is the modern day equivalent of people in the 50s getting upset at black people sitting at the dinner table with white people. Anti-progress out of pathological stubbornness, not cool, and on the wrong side of history every single time. Hide the minorities from entertainment media forever, everybody! Acknowledging their existence will “divide people”! Ooooooh so scary, so horrible.

That said, yes, the game is super cringe. But it has the right to exist for the demographic of people who do like this sort of stuff, and it’s not a game for you (or me), just like how, well, MOST games that exist aren’t your particular cup of tea you’re seeking out either.

But let’s be real, when you say you don’t want “politics” in the industry, you just mean you want games to pander to your sensibilities and only your sensibilities, because if a game shows up that panders to other people, you’re gonna bash it like a caveman and spout your own preachy completely no-leg-to-stand-on persecution complex. The mere existence of these people isn’t politics, and depicting them as they are is not a political statement, you just take it as such because you feel icky having to live in a society where you have to respect people that are different from you. Welcome to the real world, time to grow up from your insular kindergarten mindset.

  • Not interested at all. I think this was the worse thing shown at the state of play.

  • Game looks fine for those that like choosing responses and setting up different outcomes like life is strange for example. It’s sad that people don’t realize they aren’t meant to like everything and not everything is made for them. Games are for everyone. Everyone should have games that take them away from a hard day at work or to unwind after a long cram for school. Stop being so close minded people! Keep your hate and intolerance out of video games! Save that for an election!

  • My wife’s boyfriend will love this.

  • When I first got into PlayStation, it was a Japanese company. More and more, I miss those days.

    • Jak and Daxter. Chrono Trigger. Wipeout. Resident Evil. Silent Hill. Crash Bandicoot. Spyro. Ratchet and Clank. Killzone. Final Fantasy. Uncharted. God of War. Twisted Metal. Yeah, I miss them too. Sony did games, not politics.

  • So looking forward to this!!!!😊

  • Look, I’m a simple dude. If a developer feels it’s necessary to explain what preferred gender pronouns individual game characters need, that’s fine. This game is obviously too complex for me.

  • Go woke, go broke.

    • Yeah, Disney and Marvel Comics and Star Wars are so broke right now… The anti-woke backlash is totally sinking all these ships, that’s why more of them keep popping up year after year, right?

  • Thx…..y’all…. 🤟😘💕💞💕💞🥰 it really means a lot to me .

  • Anyone feeling threatened by this game needs to realize they didn’t cancel Call of Duty or Madden to make it. There are still plenty of games that cater to your tastes, preferences, and probably even politics (or at least stay neutral/apolitical).

I don’t think this game is for me, but the writing and voice acting in the trailer was charming enough, and the art style looks pretty cool. From the description of the gameplay it sounds like a visual novel or walking sim, maybe with some light adventure game and rhythm components? Not really my cup of tea, and I’m not sure exactly how political the game will get. I get the impression its creators skew further left wing than me, but that’s fine. They have the right to make whatever game they want, and I haven’t seen anything in the material released so far that would put me off of playing it. If it tells a good story I might pick it up if/when the price is right.

People have the right to ignore this game if it doesn’t speak to them, or even express their dislike of the game/concept. However being hateful toward the creators or communities of people that they’re trying to represent is a crappy thing to do. Seriously, grow up. The world is full of good people who just happen to be different from you in some way. Those differences don’t make them worse than you, or deserving of your hatred or mockery.

  • I have a feeling this may end up on PS plus sooner than later

  • This game seems really nice and chill. I appreciate that video games can offer a wide range of experiences, stories, and characters and I’m looking forward to more stuff like this right alongside more traditional games. <3

This industry is so amazing and there are so many awesome and meaningful stories left to tell with video games as a medium, and I'm so happy that I have the privilege of experiencing them for myself!

  • As a person of African Descent, diversity and minority representation I’m all for…..but hard Phookin’ pass on this one. They lost me at the Pronouns.
