Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is the legendary tale remade on PlayStation 5

Aspyr Media, Lucasfilm Games, and SIE are remaking the classic RPG from the ground up for the modern age.

A pinnacle of Star Wars Legends storytelling, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set over 4,000 years before the events of the original trilogy and introduced a new story of new heroes and villains in an epic struggle for the fate of the galaxy. The team here at Aspyr and Sony Interactive Entertainment have joined forces with Lucasfilm Games to bring you a remake of this classic Star Wars adventure. We’re rebuilding one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more, while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish.

And it’s a console exclusive on PlayStation 5 at launch.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is the legendary tale remade on PlayStation 5

If you’re not familiar with “KOTOR” — as you’ll see fans lovingly refer to it — then you’re in for a treat. The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a truly groundbreaking achievement: an award-winning RPG of incredible scope, immersion, and ambition with an epic narrative to match. A diverse cast of characters to meet, multiple planets to discover, challenging battles to fight, and cinematic storytelling that responds to the choices you make — it’s no wonder that to this day KOTOR remains one of the most celebrated video games ever made.

Why remake Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? Well, nearly 20 years after it first debuted, the original KOTOR is still one of the most beloved games of all time. And even as Star Wars travels to new horizons, we know the community is as eager as ever to return to this iconic era of storytelling and action.

With Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, our hope is to give both series newcomers and long-term fans an experience that can live alongside the very best modern releases. We’re rebuilding it from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story.

Aspyr has assembled the very best talent from across the industry to create Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake – industry veterans who have worked on great RPGs, as well as some members of the original Knights of the Old Republic development team. Their knowledge and passion for these characters, this story, and this world is unmatched. And just who is Aspyr? You probably know us as the studio responsible for bringing multiple Star Wars games to modern systems, including Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Star Wars: Episode I – Racer, Star Wars: Republic Commando, and, yes, the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic!

We’ve been working closely with Lucasfilm Games on classic Star Wars games for years, and that experience has instilled in our team a deep love and respect for these timeless titles, as well as a unique perspective on how to carry them forward into the modern age. We’re proud to be collaborating with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games to bring this dream to life.

So, what’s next? Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is a tremendous undertaking, encompassing almost every aspect of the original game. We’re still early in development, but we’re happy to finally have announced the remake and hear the PlayStation community’s thoughts on what you’re excited to see.

Whether you’re new to KOTOR or one of the millions of fans who already know and love it, there’s a great adventure ahead of us. We can’t wait to show you more!

  • I am very excited for this game!

  • Never played it. Better be as good as everyone has claimed it is

    • what are you gonna do if it’s not

    • He’s gonna steal and eat all your cookies… and he’s gonna make you watch. >:)

    • I’m gonna be highly disappointed. Thats what

    • Back then was the only RPG in which playing evil had a better arc story than playing the good boy.
Today that might not be “wow”, but there’s also a good amount of lore if you are into it, and a decent branching of dialogues for an RPG.
Doesn’t win over Hordes of the Underdark (NWN expansion), but its pretty good. I enjoyed it and I’m not even a fan of Star Wars

  • OH HELL YES!!!! absolutely cannot wait.

  • Very hyped for this. Just hope the combat is much different and well…better than the OG. Even back in 2003 it wasn’t good and had to really push past it to enjoy the story.

  • Yup I’m getting a ps5 when I’m able to

  • So an OG Xbox exclusive is being remade as a timed PS5 exclusive? Lol. I’m a sucker so I’ll get it on PS5 and XSX 6-12 months after, but imo, NO 3rd party game should ever be exclusive . It’s bad for players, it’s bad for sales. It’s only good for the CEO’s that collect the exclusivity bonus lol.

    • If it’s a timed exclusive then it’s probably going to be at least a couple years before Xbox gets it.

    • Timed? They are working with PlayStation to make the game the best it can be. No wasting time downgrading their entire vision for the woeful series s.

    • IT is console-exclusive at launch.

Anyways… the gameplay of this game was just ok and because of the keyboard and mouse. Most of the actions are pause and restarted and pause and change something to the action before you use space to pause. etc
I think most of the PlayStation users are not too familiar with what KOTOR was! :) And why the game became a “legend”

    • it is not coming to xbox, it’s coming 1st on PlayStation, and later on PC…it’s a PlayStation published game, so no xbox

  • Is KOTOR Remake Going To Be Available To PS4 Players As Well ??

    • I hope not, we need some ACTUAL PS5 generation games!

    • Only info we have is that its PS5 and PC. And it will come to Xbox a year after it launches.

    • @xxgame-hunterxx it is not coming to xbox, it’s coming 1st on PlayStation, and later on PC…it’s a PlayStation published game, so no xbox 🤡

    • @clutch_sam007
did you even read the article? “And it’s a console exclusive on PlayStation 5 at launch.” that means it’s a console exclusive at LAUNCH. they wouldn’t word it like that if it meant it was entirely exclusive to ps5.

it will come to xbox later.

    • @ZanFear

      I’M a PS4 player…

    • So am I. Guess what? I still stand by what I said. A REMAKE of KOTOR should not be held back by old tech.

    • @xxgame-hunterxx Yep, just like Final Fantasy VII Remake came to Xbox on April 10th 2021 lol.

And how the original Dragon Quest XI came to Xbox in September 2019…….. oh wait, there was no timed exclusive deal there, it was just another one of the 1900 PS4 games that a developer/publisher didn’t bother bringing to Xbox.

“Timed” deals are NOT the end all of why games don’t come to Xbox lol.

  • My favourite game of all time!! It came with my original Xbox. Maybe this will come with my PS5? ;)

  • Will the storyline be separate or will it be part of the star wars canon?

    • It will remain in the Legends continuity.

    • Aspyr tend to remaster old Star Wars games. This is the first time it’s a ground-up remake. So technically it’s not specifically part of canon. But until Disney release something else, you can still consider this to be canon.

  • So stoked. The first western RPG I ever played and one of the best RPGs of all time.

  • As a huge fan of the original, I’m more than excited to see this being remade. I sincerely hope you guys stay as true to the original as possible.

I am curious as to if voiceovers and music is being completely redone (I assume it is). If so, I hope that, for the music, Jeremy Soule is brought back. Or, at the very least, an option to use the original soundtrack is added (much like RE2 Remake). I’m hoping the original cast is brought back as well. Sadly John Cygan (Canderous Ordo) and Ed Asner (Master Vrook) have died. It won’t be the same without them!

    • In the StarWars.Com article, they say they got the original voice actress for Bastilla back, in fact she is the one narrating the trailer. They said they got some of the other original cast back too! Idk if they will get everyone back but I am excited and hope the game goes well!

  • I just need to know if there is going to be a KOTOR exclusive PS5 before I buy a PS5. No way will I wait for it to come out on Series X. 20 long years… Aspyr is the one developer I trust to stay true to what made the original(s) so special and not just turn this into some modern day generic hack n’ slash pay-to-play crap that we get from every other game developer. We want a true immersive single player RPG and I have a feeling for once we won’t be let down. Unpopular opinion – I am sad to see the round-based combat go (I think it is safe to assume they will do away with it).

    • they said it is also coming to pc at launch

    • @xrevanchi5mx
it is not coming to xbox, it’s coming 1st on PlayStation, and later on PC…it’s a PlayStation published game, so no xbox

@xxgame-hunterxx.. no it’s not coming to PC at launch, it’s coming 1st on PlayStation, later on PC, aspyr confirmed it on their twitter..

  • My favorite announcement for this showcase. I LOVE this game and i can’t be happier to know it’s being remade on PS5! Really stoke to hear more from you guys.

  • So great that you are making a game the best it can be like, Final Fantasy VII Remake, by focusing on one platform. Series s would have ruined your scope and vision.

    • if you read the article you’d know that they’re not “focusing on one platform” as this isn’t a console exclusive – it’s timed; it’ll be released on Series X|S at a later date.

and, since the game is also coming to PC, you could make your same argument (but for the PS5) by saying that the PS5 has “ruined their scope and vision” as they could’ve made a more intensive game if it had been made exclusively for PC.

regardless, all console platforms will get it in time. i do, however, think you need to get off your PlayStation high horse; all platforms have a very discernible and obvious order which goes as follows, from strongest to weakest: PC, Xbox Series X, PS5, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch.

the hardware difference between the PS5 and Series S (just like the Series X and PS5) is not all that. it’s certainly not enough of a difference to force the studio to drawback the vision of their game just so that they can cater to the Series S. regardless, even if that was the case, they’d already have to be making drawbacks just so they can bring the came down to PS5 capabilities when releasing it alongside PC.

    • also, one last thing: for players, it’s never a good thing for any game to be exclusive to one console. and thankfully the KOTOR remake isn’t going to be.

locking out an entire platform and its users from being able to access a game is an incredibly gross and selfish move – and it’s also very weird that you seem to support this practice.

    • @eazylikeweazy Do you understand how ports work? They take time with resources and money to make a simple port. Look at how long it took for hzd to get fully patched on pc but yet it takes almost a year for the frames to be uncapped on ps5. And another thing I wanted to add, no pc “exclusives” even take advantage of pc’s full hardware, devs know that majority of pc players don’t have a mid-high end pcs, so they go ahead and make games with 2009 graphics into a competitive shooter *cough cough valorant* and mobas that only people that live in basements play. You say locking people from platforms is “sick and selfish” yet it’s been a business practice in many industries and is still strong today. It’s how this economy strive, so no matter how “selfish” it is, that’s how it’s gonna be like until the earth ends. I’m also curious on how you feel about Nintendo, considering they’ve been holding onto their IPS since they’ve been a gaming company. Or are you gonna give Nintendo a pass like everyone else because “they’ve made your childhood”?

    • @eazylikeweazy
it is not coming to xbox, it’s coming 1st on PlayStation, and later on PC…it’s a PlayStation published game, so no xbox

    • @EasyLikeWeazy

sorry that you think I’m weird; the reason I like Playstation exclusive games is because of Spider-Man. I’m kind of a fanatic Lol

  • I can’t wait for this. I am hoping they update the combat. I don’t see a point in doing a remake if it’s the same game with just better graphics and since they said they’re building it from the ground up, I’m assuming the turn based combat will be gone. Which I think is good. If I want to play that again, I can. With the OG. Im also interested to see if they’ll go ahead and make this canon now.

  • Hope this succeeds so we can also get a proper release for KOTOR 2 with all the stuff that was removed due to the devs being forced to release the game early.

Hell, would be nice to see Jedi Academy get the remake treatment too some day.

  • Hopefully you are already hard at work on KOTOR 2 remake as well because I want that too before a full fledged KOTOR 3.

  • Take my money

  • Honestly, as much as I’ve been interested in the attempt HD fan remakes of KOTOR, I’m very apprehensive about this announcement. Because while I was super happy to see in the press release that they recognize the Old Canon (aka the EU/Legends Canon), and to hear they will be “staying true to its revered story” and that they have a “deep love and respect for these timeless titles.” That they include “some members of the original Knights of the Old Republic development team;” and that “their knowledge and passion for these characters, this story, and this world is unmatched.”

But what deeply worries me is the rumors from months ago that they’re going to try to mesh KOTOR with the Disney Canon. There are enough fundamental mismatches between KOTOR and what the Disney Canon set up in its first few years that doing so is likely to damage the story, characters, and worldbuilding that we all love so much. That way happens when you try to force a square peg (Disney Canon) into a round hole (KOTOR).

As much as I want to get super excited… until this is explicitly addressed I’m going to be really worried. Changing the heart of the game – the characters, story, and worldbuilding – would be an instant dealbreaker. No amount of new combat or gorgeous graphics can make up for that. And I’d warn others against buying the game too.

But if it’s all being kept the same, with just new graphics / combat / QoL/UI improvements, then I will instantly become this remakes biggest supporter. I would endless proselytize for it.

    • It is confirmed that remake is still Legends

    • Im with you. They got Revans saber color wrong in the trailer…what does that tell you?
Plus im hearing they are hiring a complete failure to rewrite the script.
      I have a bad feeling about this…

    • Is it still confirmed as being part of the Legends Canon? I know they mentioned that’s where it came from, but not that they aren’t changing it per the earlier rumors. Those rumors still worry me that it will end up being some kind of Frankensteinian monster.

  • I hope the combat system is similar to Battlefront 2 I like it simple & easy but with better dodge & perry system. Playstation got so heavy hitters games that I wanna wait on all these games till I buy PS5 only right way to play

  • so many people are confused about what systems this will release on.

it will be on ps5 at launch, as well as most definitely PC. then, at a later date, xbox WILL also be getting it.

this is not a ps5 exclusive; it’s a timed exclusive: “And it’s a console exclusive on PlayStation 5 at launch.” the clue is in the ‘AT LAUNCH’.

  • Stop saying “console exclusive at launch”. It’s either a console exclusive or a timed console exclusive.

  • I absolutely love this game and have done since it’s release in 2003!!!

I remember playing it as a young kid on the original Xbox for hours and hours, over and over.

It’s installed on my Mac, iPhone and IPad and I cannot wait to play it on the PS5 in all it’s glory!!!

    Such a sick game.

  • Here’s hoping the battles stay turn-based. 🤞🏽

  • Why does Revan have the wrong color lightsaber in the trailer? Thats not a good sign. If they are so disinterested in the basic lore, how are they supposed to do a good job remaking the game.?

Im also hearing distressing things about who they are hiring to rewrite the script.

The video game industry has some serious issues with putting ideology before competence. If this KOTOR remake ends up a mess, it will be time to start moving game development out of North America.

    • Wrong color? I guess so if you mean orange… looks orange-ish to me but I think it’s supposed to be red in the trailer? But Revan at different points has used red, blue, green, and purple.

For SURE off-color though is anything that comes out of Sam Maggs’ brain.

  • So glad I bought a ps5 instead of Xbox

  • I’m very excited this is happening. By time I was aware of this game it was way to dated for me to bother. Felt incredibly clunky and I wasn’t that big of an Xbox person to begin with. PC version I had nothing but trouble with. Not to mention I kept cutting my retinas on the sharp polygon edges and being blinded by ugly textures. Sure it looked great at release, but that was some real Soul Reaver 1 type stuff going on there (a game I love that also desperately needs love from Square Enix/Crystal Dynamics).

So does this mean Aspyr is working towards being acquired by sony if this remake proves successful? Maybe reworking other franchises say…..Uncharted 1? Maybe even working as another external Franchise maker like Insomniac is to marvel (please give us Insomniac Originals)?

Anyway stoked to finally being able to play this game, rooting for the best possible outcome and no bugs standing in your way.

  • Sounds awesome!….But Please remake Star Wars Galaxies!!! The best MMO ever made!!!!!

  • Excited, but a little bit worried about who’s writing the game. Hope they respect the material.

  • I am very happy to hear that my favourite game of all time is being remade, But i am utterly disgusted and upset that it’s being made exclusive for PS5. The game was originally released on the original xbox, This feels like somewhat of a betrayal, I know it’s silly to think that way but the child who loves and loved this game is shocked. I have hardly any words. I hope they release this on PC and not just PS5.

    • It’s coming to PC, and at launch, I believe. It’s just, out of all the consoles, it will be exclusive to the PS5 when it first launches. Because it’s a timed exclusive, it looks like it will eventually move to the new XBox consoles eventually.

  • I was excited to hear about this game until I learned about Sam Maggs re-writing it.. she is woke trash that seems to hard push agendas. Look her up if you don’t know who she is and what she stands for (basically everything patriarchy die) aka. (I wish all men would die and be removed from This universe because they are the problem with everything). Seriously that is much of her rhetoric. I don’t look forward to what this game will become…. At least I have fond memories.

  • I’ve been waiting so long for this and was SO excited.

Then I heard about the writer hired to “remake” it. What a letdown.

Please don’t trash this classic by letting sone activist turn it into their crusade, Sony. It won’t go the way you think it will. Just ask anyone involved with SW after TLJ and before Favreau.

  • I was really excited about this game till I found out The Mary Sue writer Sam Maggs is helping rewrite the Kotor remake. Sigh, I was hoping for a great game but now I’m worried that they’re going to butcher the story.

    • Yup, a weirdo, who makes up arguments about “toxic” fans that never happened. mags needs to go away and never come back.

  • So looking forward to this!!

  • I can’t wait to return to Kotor, it’s been a long time

  • I loved this game and its sequel. But “rebuilding it from the ground up”? Why not a new game? A more developed story? Tons of room for new stories. Seems a lot of work to re do something. I won’t buy a game like this (remake) until it’s flash sale free on psn.

  • I REALLY wanna see them bring in the aspect of training the companions that you have around you like KOTOR 2 where you can train Carth, I thought that was a fun quirk that made the game more interactive and fun!

  • If “The high Republic” is brought even once in any description, I’m out…

  • My excitement and interest is peaked. I own the original on Xbox, PC, and iPad. This is my favorite Star Wars story. The locations, discovering the truth, all leading up to a great ending based on the choices you make. I really look forward to playing this game. Now with technology being so advanced, I really hope Aspyr adds to some of the gameplay that was less challenging, like Jedi training to be more challenging.

  • I hope they DO NOT rush the development of this game. Some games that could’ve been potentially awesome ending up not being so when rushed. Hopefully they’ll take time and care with it’s development.
