Players’ Choice: NEO: The World Ends With You voted July 2021’s best new game

This stylish JRPG swings to the top of the polls

The race was tight, but NEO: The World Ends With You blasted to the top of the polls as the July Players’ Choice winner, with Tribes of Midgard and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles following close behind. Congrats Square Enix!

Summer isn’t over yet! Share what August games you’re looking forward to playing in the comments below.

Hola! For this month’s Players’ Choice poll, we’ve got a prime selection of gaming decadence for you to choose from. JRPG sequel NEO: The World Ends With You released to high praise from fans of the quirky original, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles appeals to fans of loud exclamations and pointing at people, Tribes of Midgard makes a boisterous debut, and oh-so-much more. Hit the poll below before Sunday night to cast your vote, and we’ll update this post with the winner next week. See you then!

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

  • Why does this show July 2020 instead of July 2021?

  • Where is Ender Lilies? easily the best game in July on Playstation

  • It has to be The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for me. I’ve been waiting years for these games and I’m finally playing them.

  • These surveys always crack me up. They’re not about the best game – they’re about the best marketing campaign. I bet fewer than 1% of the voters have played even half the games on the list – so how do you know which is the best? By which one MARKETED best and got the most people to try it.

    • Why does it matter what they call it? So you dont think they should have Game of the year either, with gamers vote? Cause I can promise that very few have played all the games their either.

    • and now I cant even spell, gg

    • @Maaden_Swe That’s a point, but at least for game of the year there are not as many contenders (let’s be honest, the sparky little indy title, no matter how awesome it is, isn’t seriously in the running) and you’ve had months (or at least weeks), not days, to try most of the titles in serious contention.

But yes, even then marketing plays a role – one of the reasons why that indy game isn’t seriously in the running. It’s just less of a role. The monthly poll seems to be more about who spent the most on marketing in the weeks before their game release.

No harm in it – I just find it funny.

  • I haven’t stopped playing Guilty Gear Strive :D

  • I voted for Cris Tales but this month should be interesting. First month in awhile that we didn’t have some huge blockbuster game where it was obvious which game would win. Curious to see what people pick

    • There are so many quality titles though. Ender Lilies, Neo, Orcs, Chris Tales, etc. Even Tribes was a pleasant surprise. It interesting, u saw fans in other platforms hyping games like The Ascent, only to see a game like Tribes breakthrough as a minor hit. September should be a fun competition.

  • Ender Lilies should be on here, great game!

  • The Forgotten City?

  • Its unfortunate that Death’s Door isn’t on Playstation

    • It will be soon, don’t worry.

    • Right!
Both Xbox & Nintendo keep scooping up a bunch of good titles.

It would be great if Sony actually reached out to developers to have these titles on PC ported over to our platform..

  • none
i did try tribes of midgar = bigest disepointment game i buy of 2021
why sony do not have refunds if you try somting out lesser then 2-3 hours to see you dislike 100%

    • Tribes of Midgard is an 80 Open critic and 250k ppl bought the games in the first several days. It’s a hit, just saying.

  • The great ace attorney

  • Those games are still coming to Xbox one not just x/s

  • Trying not to be a jerk, but you forgot option:

  • Amazing how Justin can respond on this post yet he ignores those of us asking for The Drop post to come back

  • I’ll go with Ender Lilies, but Orcs is solid. Tribes of Midgard is a pleasant surprise as well. Do we count Tsushima DC in August?

  • Maybe u missed Miles Morales, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Ratchet & Clank, Guilty Gear Strive, The Pathless, Bugsnax, Tribes, and upcoming Kena, Ghost of Tsushima DC, Death Stranding DC, Solar Ash, Deathloop, etc. One of the best first year’s in console history imo, even without Forbidden West and co. Every single one of those games is good and has some form of PlayStation exclusivity.

Or do u only pay attention to games two months of the year?

Did u notice how PlayStation 5 broke records for the fastest selling console of all time? Did u notice how Sony published four AAA games that range from 85 to 92 Metacritic so far on PS5?

Did u notice how Jim Ryan signed Insomniac and Housemarque?

Did u see Microsoft’s launch lineup? Compare the first 8 months of games on Series X vs PS5. Xbox is making ppl wait an entire year before SX gets a new AAA exclusive. Neither Gears Tactics nor ✈️ Sim are AAA or new. It’s pathetic imo. Microsoft embarrassed itself the first 8-9 months while Sony dropped high rated exclusives like candy.

Would it be better if Sony delayed Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, R&C, and Returnal for literally the two busiest gaming months of the year?

Comments like yours are a joke. From 2020 until now Sony has had so many high rated exclusives it’s obscene. Compare what Microsoft has done in that same time. And there is no comparison. And those games that ended up getting delayed to early 2022 are only going to embolden Sony’s lineup for that year. They’ve had a great lineup since the PS5 launched and with the delays 2022 is going to be even more impressive. What exactly is Microsoft going to release next year? I know Sony has Horizon, GoW, GT, and potential bangers like Forspoken and FFXVI.

If u are impressed with Microsoft’s games lineup in the first year of Series X’s existence then you are a joke my friend. Two new AAA exclusives will have released in the first 365 days of the console’s life and one of those looks terrible in Halo Infinite. And please don’t mention Stalker that game is like two or three months timed exclusive. It’s laughable.

  • It’s hilarious that u cry about October, yet in September PlayStation has three big games. Kena, Deathloop, Death Stranding DC. Also, F.I.S.T. and probably more exclusive games that I’m forgetting.

My point being that the very month before the month you start crying about PlayStation is loaded. And ofc Tsushima DC in August.

Oh, and of course they continue stacking psvr with games. But all you care about is October and November, smart…

  • I am fan of shooter games, so this easy was for me , ill definitely vote for Sniper Elite VR

  • I specifically wanted to comment thats it’s about time Sony brought back Sly Cooper. Other games like Jak and Daxter, Spyro and Crash Bandicoot got remastered (much appreciated) so why not Sly. We don’t necessarily need a new game but a remaster would be nice, although Sly did end on a cliff hanger. I’m just a huge Sly Cooper fan and would support Sly as much as I can.

  • when did ace attorney chronicles come to ps4

  • Gotta vote for Tribes of midguard, such a good game, with a bit more content, could be GOTY

  • Missed out on the Vote . Tribes of Midgard

  • Sounds like it was close but congrats to NEO TWEWY. August should be another interesting month as once again there aren’t any HUGE releases. I doubt Ghost of Tsushima will be eligible for the vote and Kena got delayed. Psychonauts 2 might be the frontrunner

  • Awesome, now maybe we can see a proper JRPG sale back soon. Hopefully one where Koei Tecmo actually come to the party with decent discounts…
