Metro Exodus on PS5: recoil, reloads, resistance, and realism

How 4A Games uses the DualSense wireless controller features to deepen your immersion.

This Friday, our long-awaited PlayStation 5 upgrade for Metro Exodus goes live, as a free update to all current owners of the PS4 version, or available to purchase on disc as the Complete Edition for newcomers.

Metro Exodus on PS5: recoil, reloads, resistance, and realism

Here at 4A Games we’ve utilized every aspect of the PlayStation 5 hardware to dramatically improve the overall experience. We’ve doubled frame rate from 30 to 60 FPS, and quadrupled resolution to 4K, while completely overhauling our engine to deliver a fully ray-traced lighting experience that offers unprecedented realism; we’ve leveraged the lightning fast SSD to reduce loading times; and we support 3D Audio to further increase player immersion.

In this article, we’ll talk in more detail about our support for the DualSense wireless controller, and how these innovative new hardware features allow us to push player immersion even further.

As you may have guessed, creating that sense of immersion is one of our key goals for the Metro series. We’ve been refining our craft over the past decade, using narrative, audio, and visual tricks to draw players deeper into the game world.

A big focus has been how the player character, Artyom, feels connected to and embedded within the game world – we strip away the HUD / UI to the bare minimum, try and physicalize as much information to break down the barriers between the players eyes and the world; and we put a huge amount of effort into our first person animations, from complex weapon reloads to physical interactions with the environment such as opening doors and manipulating or picking up objects to make the world feel tactile and alive.

The DualSense controller has allowed us to push that tactile feel even further. The advanced haptic feedback gives each weapon a unique feel upon discharge, recoil, reload, or jam. Players will even feel the subtle differences within the same weapon class as they adapt and customise on the fly using our in-the-field crafting and customisation mechanics; adding a heavier stock to increase stability, or a suppressor to reduce muzzle climb all change how the controller responds in the player’s hands.

Some of Metro’s signature weapons are the hand-crafted, pneumatic Tikhar and the spring loaded Helsing, and we found the perfect use for the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers to simulate the increased pressure or resistance when priming /charging these unique firearms. Maintaining high air pressure in the tank is essential to preserve the Tikhar’s lethality, and this has to be manually topped up by pumping the right trigger; as the pressure increases, so does the resistance on the trigger action so players can feel when maximum pressure has been attained.

We also use the adaptive triggers to mimic resistance when rowing, operating some machinery, or driving Metro’s all terrain vehicle acquired in the Caspian desert.

Of course, for Metro Exodus we retrofitted this new functionality into our existing design, but as creatives we’re excited about exploring new gameplay mechanics that can be enhanced with the DualSense controller in mind from the start to better deliver our goal of complete player immersion.

Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoy experiencing Metro Exodus with the added immersion of the DualSense controller when it hits PS5 June 18.

  • Nice!

I can’t wait to be the first platform that gets to experience the PLAYSTATION 5 DualSense Controller features…

    Oh wait.

    • This is great. I really do appreciate when game developers take their time to upgrade these games for the PS5 and take advantage of the new hardware. I especially love boosts like this because they really make the game next generation. The metro franchise is great and I’m glad I bought all the games.

  • Been waiting for this for a while. No FPS should be played at 30 frames. That, and the RT @4k has me pumped to go through this awesome game again. Only ‘Death Stranding DC’ has me more excited right now.

    • i get you guys have only ever had consoles but tons of wasted frames don’t add to your experience. it can actually hinder.

    • For the love of god, stop with this FPS superiority complex bs! Rock solid 30 fps is just fine, so is 60.
Do you know what’s even better?
The option to choose whatever fps you want to play with… FFS

  • Super happy to see a Metro game getting the ps5 treatment. The Metro series is a phenomenal FPS experience that i would have to say is game for game better than Bioshock and thats saying A LOT.

  • When I see the game it’s remind me RESISTANCE

  • Can’t wait! I started playing Exodus again on my ps5 back in May, then I happened to see this update was coming so I’ve held off on playing anymore. I even wrote an article for a website I contribute to I was so excited by this update.

    • Same! I bought all the metro games because I already wanted metro exodus, then I saw the upgrade was coming so I paused my playthrough, which I don’t usually do I’ll just finish the game then replay for the upgrade, but I did the same for fallen order.

  • Nice.

    Regard,

I bought the Gold edition a des days ago then upgraded to the PS5 version but i cannot download the DLCs for the PS5 version as i’m Always getting “CE-107880-4 error”. I don’t even see the Complete Edition on the store so that might just be a temporary issue, but i’d like to get access to my DLCs, anyone has that same issue and has a solution for that?

    • I’m having the same problem.

    • The problem is just with the DLC The Two Colonels. if you try to download Sam’s Story, you will get it.
At least, this is what happen to me.

    • Same for me. Hopefully it will be fixed soon, same error happened for Ff7 yuffie dlc apparently but was resolved at some point on launch day

  • I hope they bring a patch to improve load times. After seeing Digital Foundry breakdown both PS5 and Series X aren’t really utilizing it well. Both around 40 seconds start up if I recall average, while a PC with a 3.5GB read/write SSD can average 20 seconds at same settings.

Also for PS5 for some reason the gamma or general brightness seems darker/off. When compared to PC or Series X. Again though this might be a issue with PS5 current software given many games have been shown darker vs other systems. I mean even apps like Amazon Prime look flushed out in a dark screen placed over it for me at least.

To clarify don’t see said issues on my PS4 Pro, Xbox, PC, or T.V. apps of similar situation in regards to crushed blacks or darker coloration. I bring it up as hopefully be it Sony or the devs of the subject game fix that. Just giving critique for the PS5 version by developers and Sony software current issues.

    • Actually Digital Foundry is full of it. The xbox version is very clearly washed out. There is a problem with capturing the xbox’s output. It doesn’t occur when you play it on the tv, just when it is captured. And this has been known for many months, yet they lied about it. The Ps5 version is the correct version. It is clear aa day when you look at them side to side. The xbox version cannot output true blacks, it’s all gray hues. Either way this shows Df’s continued xbox favoritism. After clearly saying they don’t know the devs intent they say the Ps5 version must be wrong. They have consistently shown their blatant bias with xbox, likely because Microsoft gave them first access to xbox series x and Sony doesn’t give a crap about them. Nor should they. They are not objective at all and are nothing more than influencers.

    • “Digital Foundry is wrong. All the other consoles and PC are also wrong. PS5 is the correct one” – spotted-badger, 2021

    • Just wanna add that you’re the exact opposite of what almost all the YouTube comments say. Any DF haters roast them for “LOVING” PlayStation way more than XBox when the reality is that the PS5 has just had better performant games in general so far this gen.

I’m not really sure where you’re coming from with what you’re saying lol but its pretty silly.

All-in-all, PS5 version is the worst of the bunch currently and that’s why i bought it on PC instead. I’ve been playing on PC with my PS5 controller with Dolby Atmos and the resistant triggers and haptic feedback and better RT reflections and customized controls and etc etc etc

My version is the correct version. My version looks very similar to the XBox version. You are incorrect lol

    • (But, also- they’re all fantastic versions of the game and everybody should play them. ok im done PEACE)

  • Buying the PS5 Gold Edition now 👍

  • Same I’ll I’m getting this

  • 70% off but 137.4 GB are you serious

    • That is the size of both the PS5 and PS4 combined. The size of Metro Exodus PS5 Edition is around 70 GB.

  • It’s for the gold edition all DLC’s included

  • Has anybody with the PS4 disc version been able to upgrade to the PS5 version on the PS store? There is no link to an “enhanced edition”, all other links for “PS4 owners upgrade” are for the full priced Standard Edition. When you put this in your cart it, there is no discount it is still $39? The dlc link in the game menu is also broken.

    • Insert the game disc in the PS5 and an upgrade option will be available if you scroll down and to the right,if you have purchased or redeemed the DLC previously it will be available to purchase for free.

  • My bad it’s 77.80GB your right it’s 137 GB both PS4 and PS5 versions

  • I’m blown away by the experience so far, is it controversial to say this feels the most next gen! The immersion is off the charts it is simply stunning. After all the fuss made about ray tracing and having witnessed implementation partially in other games, it didnt feel quite as game changing as I expected. Metro’s global illumination ray tracing is mind blowing, light blooms and radiates so naturally where ever you go, it feels so realistic and enchanting. MASSIVE WIN!

  • Please add gyro/motion controls.

  • This is my first experience with any Metro game and if I’m honest, I probably would have let this one pass me by if it hadn’t been for the upgrade. I am so glad I gave this a shot. Very immersive game!

  • Metro very underrated game series btw that Xbox series x timed exclusive game stalker 2 is coming to PS5 that game gives me metro vibes

  • Please add gyro controls.

  • Yo 4A games the last hero and a man of principe trophies didn’t unlock at the end of the sam’s story DLC for some reason can you please fix this

  • Nice! I am not a huge fan of haptic feed as my hands do not need anymore strain while gaming but this is definitely a game I am willing to try it out with. I know the weapons developer guy was had to be extremely excited to share these new haptic features with us. I hope this free update and the re-release in terms of the Gold Edition, that Metro Exodus gets another boost in sales. Such a great game game made by talented devs.

  • This is amazing I love it! this is the first game that don’t make me decide between beautiful 4k and ray tracing or performance this Is how is done!! Excellent work

  • This is amazing it looks and it feels better than brand new games, also this is the first ps5 game that dont force me to make a decision between performance and beautiful 4k resolution with ray tracing, excellent work!! If the game was immersive before now is on a level that I cant even dream of on a console
