The Last of Us Part II performance patch for PS5

Play The Last of Us Part II, targeting 60 FPS, on PS5 now.

So far 2021 has been incredible, and supremely humbling, as The Last of Us Part II has been recognized with over 300 Game of the Year Awards, an unprecedented achievement. We are super grateful to our community for your terrific support over the past year, including voting us the BAFTA EE Game of the Year and the Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of the Year. We’ve received a ton of fan mail letting us know how meaningful The Last of Us series has been for you and we’ve been astounded by all the excellent fanart, cosplay, and tattoos you have been sharing with us.

One of the most requested items from our community has been to release a PS5 performance patch for The Last of Us Part II.

Well, today is the day and you can download the free* patch right now!

The Last of Us Part II performance patch for PS5

Once patch 1.08 for The Last of Us Part II is installed on your PS5, you will find a toggle in the Display options that allows you to choose between a Framerate Target of 30 FPS or 60 FPS. This allows you to choose your preferred framerate to complement the rest of the enhancements that are part of the PS5 backward compatibility with PS4 games, such as an enhanced resolution, faster load times, and more.

The team has been digging into the PS5 hardware and the possibilities it unlocks since launch last year and we’re excited about what the future holds. This patch is just the first step of working on the PS5. We’ll let you know when we’ve got more news to share!

  • Yesss thank you so much team. Looking forward to playing 2020’s GOTY in 60FPS. Can’t wait to see what else you got planned for PS5

    • You’re welcome! Glad to put this out there for your fans.

    • Please, do this with Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy! Please!

    • iamtylerdurden1

It’s wonderful to receive this free enhancement, but making time between Returnal, Destruction All-Stars Season Pass, and Rift Apart is the real question. It really is beautiful to have true next gen exclusives along with these enhancements.

My question is, why would anyone not toggle 60 FPS on? Is a locked 30 really ideal to some people over a targeted 60? I mean, granted, it’s a beautiful 30 FPS with the proprietary motion blur technology and the smooth animations, but still. VRR or not I’ll take a game that sits high 50s over a locked 30 any day.

    • Thanks%%E!

  • Played it 2.5 times to platinum it. Might have to play it again just to see this.

  • Was waiting for this. Finally got my 4k tv and ready for grounded mode.

  • Been waiting for this Arne. Thanks!

“This patch is just the first step of working on the PS5. We’ll let you know when we’ve got more news to share!”

Does this mean more performance improvements for PS5 for TLoU2 or are you alluding to other projects?

    • I’m guessing a full-on PS5 version might be coming in the future, possibly with that TLOU1 remake that is apparently happening.

    • You’re welcome! Overall, just wanted to say we’re actively developing for PS5. Can’t speak to specifics right now.

    • THE-PLASTICA-MAN

This is great but you mentioned in your SIGGRAPH talk that your engine supports Ray Tracing but you lacked the hardware to do it. Now with PS5, I hope we will get dedicated version with ray tracing.

  • Well I don’t see any update at the moment :c

    • If your game is on top where other tiles are ! just hit options button and select check for update and voila update 1.08 is there

It’s surprising and refreshing to see this as a stealth release. While upgrades on last gen games are very welcome, it shouldn’t be the lead headline for your shiny next-gen console.

I’m just happy that headlines for the PS5 right now are new, next gen exclusives such as Returnal and Rift Apart. Enhanced games are a nice side note, as it should be. Sony’s renewed commitment to PS5 boost mode is awesome, and more enhanced games are coming, but I’m just thankful that PlayStation 5 is so flush with new, exclusive titles that this is just a footnote.

I actually feel bad for people who chose Xbox Series S expecting a next gen experience with new, cutting edge exclusives. The amount of hype that Gears 5 received for having a free enhanced edition at Xbox Series launch Was staggering and sad because it highlighted the fact that there just wasn’t anything new to play.

So again, thanks to Naughty Dog and SIE for delivering yet another free enhancement, but even more thanks to Sony for not allowing me to play it immediately due to the fact that I’m neck deep in a cutting edge next gen exclusive like Returnal. And it might be a few months until I can dive into The Last of Us 2 enhanced because Rift Apart is only 3 weeks away. Then we have Kena later this summer, Microsoft’s own Deathloop/Ghostwire, Forbidden West, and a bevy of high end indies such as Stray, Solar Ash, Jett, LDI, and more. It’s a beautiful thing.

Thanks, Arne. It’s refreshing to see someone who actually replies to comments. And I know I’m commenting very late, but is the elevator bug which prevents you from progressing still present? And I’m assuming this was primarily a frame rate and perhaps load time enhancement, but are there plans to implement some legitimate dual sense features into the game? Such as advanced haptics? And possibly more adaptive trigger implementation?

Oh, and Arne, I’m not sure if you have played Returnal with the 3D Pulse headset, but it’s easily the best 3D audio I have heard on console. I know you guys are huge into new technology and I know you have implemented 3D audio into your games in the past, but I’m wondering if there are plans to explore this feature further? In my opinion it’s one of the most underutilized yet most impressive features on the PlayStation 5. Thank you and congratulations on releasing the most awarded game of all time. You really only need to play the game for an hour to understand that it’s probably the finest production we have ever seen on a console.

  • “This patch is just the first step of working on the PS5.”
    awesome! :D

  • Awesome news! This will be a great way to replay the game! Please give Uncharted 4 and Lost and Legacy the same treatment. 👀

Looking forward to Factions 2 and your next PS5 game. Fingers crossed for a new Jak and Daxter!

    • We won’t be seeing Jak and Daxter for at least a few non-Jak installments, sadly. But yeah, the world needs a new Jak and Daxter gun, one that incorporates the strengths of the first four games, not just The Precursor Legacy. (The eco powers expansion and gun-staff from The Lost Frontier are great additions to take inspiration from, though.)

  • It’s about time you’ve guys came out with a performance boost! Finally

  • Nicee thank you so much for the update. It’s time for me to play it again

  • this is the most insane stealth drop ever THANK YOU!!!

  • YAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSS. I have been waiting for a long time about this one.

  • Great! Now do the same for Horizon Zero Dawn. Pretty please. :-)

    • HZD is Guerilla Games, not Naughty Dog. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but I hope for more studios to do the same with these games.

I think Killzone Shadow Fall also got 60 FPS back in November.

    • They sort of missed the boat with that and if there was going to be a 60fps patch, releasing it the day the game went for free on Play At Home would have been the perfect time when millions more people would be trying the game for the first time.

    • It’s not too late… I still want 60FPS HZD! I’m not finishing the game until I get it. Only like 50% complete at best.

  • Certainly one of my two favorite games with The Last Of Us! Too bad it’s so hard to find a PS5!

  • This is news to wake up to. It’s the perfect excuse to dive back into this game.

  • Hey! 60fps is great! But, I do have a question what about the “Enhanced Resolution” title in the trailer? The game still runs at the same resolution as PS4 Pro (2560×1440). Thank you.

  • Please update Uncharted 4.

  • I was waiting to play this game on PS5 in all it’s glory, but the wait for a PS5 is getting too much for me, so I will probably just play it soon.

  • Hey Arne,
Maybe you remember the german guy from Twitter because thats me.
Quick question: What do you guys mean with “enhanced resolution”?
Digital Foundry says the game runs at 1440P still and that confused me a bit.
    Thanks!

    • Resolution is enhanced from the base PS4 version. PS5 and PS4 Pro will share the same resolution, with the added higher framerate on PS5.

  • Hopefully we get a 60fps patch for Uncharted 4 and Uncharted Lost Legacy.

  • I know it’s beyond the scope of this patch, and I know you can’t say anything further, but please consider a director’s cut of this game.

So much of it’s beautifully done, but I think the non-linear style of storytelling hurts it more than it helps. There were characters that I killed before I’d met them, so rather than *feeling* sadness at their deaths, I was just able to logically connect distant events.

Thanks for the patch, I shall download soon. I’ll buy a remaster if it comes with a linear director’s cut! :)

  • Eh. *Yawn*. Thats the most political statement Ive read in a while. Naughty Dog are so caught up in their own success, its going to their heads while studios like: Bend, Insomniac, and especially Sucker Punch are the underdogs. Havent Naughty Dog seen enough success to start passing that along to their brothers in the industry? And Sony are playing favorites giving the platform to Naughty Dog rather than really making any kind of effort to elevate any of the other studios. Jim Ryans a moron, but youd figure even with his British pride, he want to see success under his regime come from his own homeland to boast of Europes success and not those old Yanks, wouldnt ya think?

    • We’ve all got close friends at all those studios – and Guerrilla, London Studio, Team ASOBI, etc. – we have a lot of mutual respect and help each other out in a ton of ways studio to studio and on our social channels. Nothing but love and a desire to see everyone succeed in their projects here.

    • Probably the “underdogs” are all those in EU and JP that got closed…

They really, really need to pick up more international studios so it’s not so heavily NA focused.. Otherwise we’ll just get more and more copy paste third person action adventures with generic characters and no inspiration

    • You morons needs to claim down or rather go to other platfrom named Xbox which hasn’t released a 1st AAA game in 621 days 🤣

    • iamtylerdurden1

      @miseryprincess

      Media Molecule – UK
      Guerrilla Games – Dutch
      Polyphony Digital – Japan
      Asobi Team – Japan
      London Studio – UK
      Sony Xdev – Europe

Nearly half of their studios are outside of the US and then you have second party studios like Housemarque who are also located outside of the US.

Sony also has a history of working heavily with non first party Studios outside of the US. Studios from Japan, UK, France and so on.

And for anyone who claims Sony is only releasing generic third party games and blockbusters you need to stop reading propaganda and just look at reality.

Over the past year or so we’ve received more new IP and more highly creative games than anyone. Platformers, creation games, AAA roguelikes, VR, you name it.

      Dreams
      Concrete Genie
      Bugsnax
      Sackboy
      Returnal
      VR – Paper Beast etc.
      The Pathless
      Destruction All-Stars
      Persona 5R

Generic characters? No passion? Housemarque isn’t first party ATM but they essentially operate like one. Try Returnal, it’s fresh and the narrative is unexpectedly deep and shocking. The protagonist is anything but generic and boring. In fact, it’s the most groundbreaking protagonist I have ever seen in a game. Period.

Even though Tsushima is standard open world action, the game was crafted with obsessive passion and Jim is a fantastic protagonist.

While TLOU2 is a third person game as you claim, Ellie and the characters you play as are anything but generic and passionless. In fact, I have never played a game that invokes such emotion and that so closely resembles the high art found in legendary film and print.

Does Sony publish many third person action games? Sure. But they also publish some of the best in other genres as well. They take risks and they provide a wealth of creative experiences for us to enjoy, whether first or third person.

I see the same nonsense that PlayStation exclusives are all the same type of third person action game. Just look at some of the exclusives over the past generation until now and tell me if these are generic third person Uncharted clones.

      RESOGUN
      Bloodborne
      The Last Guardian
      Gran Turismo Sport
      Until Dawn
      Pyre
      MLB The Show
      Dreams
      Detroit
      Helldivers
      LBP3
      Edith Finch (timed)
      Everybody’s Gone to Rapture
      Concrete Genie
      Driveclub
      Persona 5
      Bugsnax
      The Pathless
      Nex Machina
      Matterfall
      Gravity Rush 2
      Alienation
      Deracine
      Shenmue III
      Returnal
      Astro Bot
      Firewall
      VR Worlds
      The Inpatient
      Astro’s Playroom
      Entwined
      R&C
      Knack 2
      Guilty Gear
      Salt & Sanctuary
      Ni No Kuni 2
      The Persistence
      Farpoint
      Golem
      Rush of Blood
      Arkham VR
      Destruction All-Stars
      Oddworld Soulstorm
      Tem Tem
      Rigs
      Transistor
      Nioh

Those are games with exclusivity, off the top of my head from last gen until now that are not the typical, close camera, third person action style in which ppl claim.

    • You seem confused. We’re talking about FIRST PARTY games. Having to stretch to include a list of basically all third party kind of proves the point that the third parties are carrying Sony. But doesn’t really disprove they have first parties doing the same thing over and over.

      Ok first of all
      Xdev aren’t a developer.
LS and MM all make tech demos/mini games for VR, not full games.
      Polyphony only make GT.

So between them not a single full game other than a driving title.

The 10 NA studios (so that’s already double the number for the rest of the world) all get to make full games with big piles of money. In Europe it’s basically just Guerilla and Japan is Polyphony.

10 NA vs 2 EU/JP seems balanced, right?

      Moving on.

You’re talking about games that aren’t first party. So you can discount basically everything you said. Also basically all of those are on other platforms or are PS3 titles.

The actual Sony first party games for the PS4.

TLoU2 third person action adventure. US
GoW. Third person action adventure. US
Uncharted 4. Third person action adventure. US
The Uncharted whatever it was called. Third person action adventure. US
Days Gone. Third person action adventure. US
GoT. Third person action adventure. US
HZD third person action adventure. EU
      Etc. etc. etc.

(can pretty much also say they all had similar mechanics and mopey crycry plots)

      RPGs. 0.
      Fighting games. 0.
      Tech Demos. 1.
      Mini games. 2-3.
Might as well discount remakes as they’re not “new”.

So basically we have some tech demos, and Concrete Genie for the last 7 years. Is that somehow a praiseworthy thing?

Returnal, Detroit, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, Spiderman, Ratchet and Clank, DS, Last Guardian, anything Bluepoint does, etc. etc. were all third party.

Sony takes ZERO risks with anything now. They make generic gameplay, generic plot, generic stereotype characters, with no personality just so no one might not like it. Sad crycry plots full of obviously sad things so people can think they’re deep and emotional. The game play is basically walking between dialog and cutscenes then occasionally really, really simple combat that is really, really hard to lose and has zero depth. That you had to switch to third party games to find something is a bit telling.

They make games to make money. That’s about it. If these things are peoples “passion projects” they’re really boring people. They wouldn’t dare have a character with personality beyond a stereotype of trope. Or go for something new with gameplay (destruction Allstars isn’t even new).

  • Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

  • Everyone’s asking for Uncharted performance patches next, but I’d love to see Jak and Daxter get a patch that allows resolution up to 4K.

Thanks for this work Naughty Dog! I’ll have to start a new playthrough of Part II soon :)

  • My Wednesday did not start out great, but this update has made my day!!! YES!!! Thank You!!!

  • Thank you Arne Meyer and Naughty Dog Team for this great news!!! I was waiting for the 60FPS patch to replay this Masterpiece!!!
Hey Arne, you guys celebrated the 5th anniversary of Uncharted 4 last week and it would have been a great opportunity to also announce a 60FPS Patch. Hopefully you guys have the time and resources to make this happen!!! The Last of Us 2 and Uncharted 4 are two Masterpieces that will look and feel the best at 60FPS!!!

    • You’re welcome! We’ll consider your request. You’re obviously not the only one. Thanks for being a fan of our games!

  • Been waiting for this to come out before I replayed it on Grounded!

    • Now’s the time! Thanks for waiting and being patient. Hope you enjoy the Grounded replay. Good luck!

  • Can we get a 60fps update for Bloodborne? Please playstation

    • This. It’s absurd something so fundamental is missing. Like why did they even bother making the PS5 if this masterpiece can’t hit 60fps.

    • Bloodborne is a third party game, it was just Sony published. So they probably wouldn’t be able to do the patch themselves.

Fromsoftware don’t have much reason to update the game now, especially as they didn’t do any “Pro enhancements” (and they’re busy).

    • iamtylerdurden1

      @Miseryprincess

Technically Bloodborne is a first party game as it was made by Japan Studio as well.

Not only that but it’s both published and owned by Sony. People love to say it’s a From Software game as if Sony had nothing to do with it. Bloodborne is definitely a first party game.

    • No bloodborne wasn’t “basically a first party game”. No one from outside the studio did anything but technical support for porting it. There were zero key positions filled by Sony staff.

No Sony employee made a single asset, coded any gameplay, wrote any dialog, or plot, made any engine, or designed any mechanics. So saying “Sony basically made it” is a bit unfair. Is Day’s Gone an Epic game too?

From Software are not a first party studio. So calling it “first party game” doesn’t make any sense. It’s a third party Sony published game that Sony offered some technical support with, not a Sony studio made Sony game.

  • NaughtyDog and Arne, thank you so much! I am so excited I can do a second playthrough of this game in 60FPS, I have been wanting this since day 1! I’m so excited to see what you have in store for the continuation of Factions. Is it strictly just a frame rate improvement, or did you manage to implement any other PS5 specific improvements beyond basic backwards compatibility?

    • me too. since day 1

    • The frame rate toggle is the main change to use the PS5 game boost, the rest comes with the BC package – same resolution as PS4 Pro, faster load times mentioned on DF’s review, etc.

  • what a wonderful news

    thanks a lot

  • Got the platinum, I was waiting on this for my grounded run thanks.

  • Thank You, Naughty Dog. I love you

  • Sweet Baby Jesus! I’ve been holding off on playing another play through till the update came. Thanks

  • About time I get to play this game again!

  • Now it’s the time to get TLOU 2, I was waiting for this patch for PS5. Time to get emotionally exhausted like I was before after playing TLOU 1.

    • Oh man you are in for an experience. Hope you enjoy what we were going for here. Thanks for waiting!

  • Its about damn time. Was waiting for this to plat the game and attempt grounded

  • Great work! Now it’s time to get these games 60fps patches:

    Uncharted 4
    Uncharted The Lost Legacy
    Bloodborne
    Horizon Zero Dawn
    Gravity Rush 2

    • Horizon is first on the list, then Bloodborne. :)

    • gravity rush 2? hahaha you’re funny. that game is DEAD (and so is the studio)

    • they probably don’t even have the source code anymore to GR2

    • @ElektroDragon

I want Bloodborne first THEN Horizon

    • @mschulze00

Proof they don’t have the source code? Or are you just making things up?

    • Bloodborne is third party.

So unless they send out a pile of money, Fromsoftware isn’t likely going to do anything. Not that they’d really want to patch a game from a while back that would get no sales, in the middle of production of another title.

  • Nice! Calling it now…We’re getting a TLOU Part II Remastered. 4K / 60fps / ray tracing, near-instant load times, maybe even multiplayer.

  • I’m a HUGE fan and don’t know how to get this message to the devs. Photo mode could really use some love! Features like a placeable spotlight, less-limited camera, an automatic lockon to Ellie/Abby for depth of field (or even just smaller increments). These could go a huge way to helping us virtual photographers capture the beauty of this game.

Love the game. I’m working my way through true Grounded right now and it’s a real treat. Can’t wait to get a PS5 and experience the improved FPS!

  • Some outlets are reporting that this patch also adds Dualsense haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support.

Can anyone confirm whether this is true or not? Because if it is, I might pick this up when it’s on sale next week.

    • DualSense has the standard (and quite excellent) rumble emulation as part of the PS4 BC feature set. One of Co-Game Directors helped out with the emulation and he’s a fan of how it feels.

  • Nice. This game looks amazing hopefully 60fps makes it better

  • Awesome news! Great job Naughty Dog. Next is Uncharted 4.

  • Great, but I finished this twice only half a year ago and feel no need to replay soon. An Uncharted 4 upgrade would’ve been more appreciated.
In general I’m quite disappointed with how few games have gotten upgrades and don’t want to replay them without.

  • YAY! Now please get it done for Horizon Zero Dawn!!! PLEASE!!!

  • Do the PS5 version now support haptic feedback and adaptive triggers?

    • A few comments above I mention it’s got the rumble emulation that comes with backwards compatibility. Feels great though!

  • Amazing update. I had been anticipating a 60fps update ever since we saw such improvements for the PS5 Backwards Compatible catalogue of games. If I may, I would like to request a few other games that I would love to see updated to 60 FPS.

    These are:

Death Stranding (the PC version is hard to come back from!)
    Horizon: Zero Dawn
    Bloodborne
    Gravity Rush 2
The Last Guardian (I know it’s possible with v1.00, but it’s inconvenient to say the least)
    Detroit: Become Human
    Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
    Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Thank you again for the update. As shown, I hope for more!

  • Hell yes. Finished a replay a while ago and would have loved 60fps, but now knowing it’ll be there for my next playthrough whenever that comes around has me hyped.
Want to replay Uncharted 4 soon, please do that next!
