PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.

Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.

  • Thank you for bringing up PS3 and Vita store online.
The CMOS battery issues for 3 generations(PS3,PS4 and PS5) needs to be addressed in order to regain consumer trust in the long run.

  • While I’m exceedingly grateful that the PS3 and Vita’s stores will remain active, I have to ask. Please don’t let PS Videos die. I have a stack of anime episodes and movies that I don’t want to lose. It’s bad enough that movies that came out in and after 2016/17 can’t be added to the download list to be viewed offline on PS3 and Vita, but I don’t want to lose access to all of the movies that I’ve been collecting. There is still a massive demand for PS Video and I rarely use streaming services, since PS Now isn’t offered in Australia.

Please understand that people still love PS Videos and will continue to use the service. There are enough sales offered alongside gaming sales where I still find amazing films and the Big In Japan sales always have phenomenal deals on anime movies and shows. It’s disappointing that a bunch movies offered in other regions and countries cannot be purchased unless you are in that country, but I can deal with that, just so long as PS Videos can continue. Please reconsider the choice to close the store.

  • Thank you VERY Much!
Please! Please give us another game sale on ps3! Please!

  • Any chance there will be a PS3/PSVita/PSP games sale in the near future. Cause it is great your not removing the stores, but since many of the games are still full retail price (60,00 euro), i can’t see myself buying them. before this announcement, i was considering spending a lot of money to make sure i would have all of the games if the stores would close. But a sale, would make me buy a lot of stuff. I had a PS3 & PSvita after the sales had stopped, and just kinda had to stare at all those games since they never dropped in prices.

    • I was thinking the same thing. You guys scared me a bit, throw out a sale and I’ll buy it up lol!

  • Thank you! That was a day I’ve been dreading since the ps4 came out lol! The 3 is not just a 3, it’s also the gateway to a lot of ps2 and ps1 games that simply don’t exist on current and last gen.

  • mejor para si puedo ver juegos y comprarlos

  • Imagine a PS5 Pro with integrated PS2/PS3 hardware, giving it the capability to play PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 and PS5 games. Launch it at an increased price during PS’s anniversary and you can quantify how much you can capitalise on back compat. With Cerny on board, it would be instant success…

  • Só tenho duas palavras para dizer a vocês: Para Béns!

  • I am wonderinging if the PS3 Store will re-open if perhaps SONY might bring back the virtual world known as HOME in some form. I have my doubts however one can hope. At least the PS3 Store re-opening shows that SONY is capable of listening to it’s customers… and that is a good thing.

  • Thank you🙇🏻‍♂️

  • Fantastic news! I did make a list of games I wanted to buy. I think I will still buy them but slowly.

  • Thank you so much

  • I love PS3, PS Vita & PS4 currently!!! Arigatou gozaimasu! Also Japan number 1 <3

  • It’s hard to fathom losing our precious memories associated with PS3, please keep our legacy systems and hardware alive, Sony.

  • I would love to play my PS1 games on my PS4/PS5 like on the PS3. My PS3 fat gets very loud.
RE1-3, Dino Crisis 1-2, Silent Hill.

  • Thanks for deciding not to burn bridges with game developers who had just recently bought Vita dev kits. That would have almost assured that those developers would have walked away from Sony for good. You did the right thing, and I’m kinda shocked.

  • Finally! but JUST GIVE US LEGACY BC on PS5 and u can save all the trouble! JUST DO IT ALREADY!

  • Defuse the c-bomb.

  • I’m gonna buy a ps vita soon
    Thanks for not leaving vita

  • Here is a critique. Get rid of the death clock, allow 1440p and VRR support, fix the chat feature that was made worse during the UI update a while back, give some ETA for SSD expanded storage, and etc.

Also work if not already at better utilizing the SSD. Given many PS4 games that are third party run not much better than a PS4 Pro with a SSD inside. Also compared to Xbox Series with half the possible speed in SSD performing near identical or better in older previous gen games…

Also again if not currently working on it. Better the backwards compatibility and utilization for developers than it currently is. Also really look into a solution for back compatibility for PS1-3 and PSP/Vita to retain Legacy. Or just allow more people to go PC and Emulate given no other option once past systems become unavailable…

I know PS3 emulation is extremely difficult, but given the code/data you the company have. It can be done if a bunch of fans can get semi working emulators for many games to be at time 90% perfect… PS1&2 already can be nearly perfectly emulated on PS4 if jailbreak… So little excuse there really.

Please do these things. Not just because I want them, but for the consumers/fans and those who are getting sick of recent things done by the company. Like the disrespect to Japanese Developers, starting to ignore certain indie developers, censorship on top of what ratings board decide, and etc. So many friends on PSN have left to PC or other systems.

Ones still around are just waiting to buy/build a PC and or switch to another platform… I’m saying this because I want Sony to do well financially long term, but also do well by the customers. If nothing is shown in a year or so of some turn around I’m likely going to just sell my PS5, PS4s, PS3, Vita, and games. Buy/build a new PC and Emulate everything Sony specific of past while buying from say GOG, Steam, and etc.

I’m saying all this as genuine concern and the growing agitation over the past few years. Best regards to all the talent still around.

  • This is great! How about having an occasional sale on these games? There is a huge library that I still have not purchased all the games that I would like for both systems (backlog and I work a lot…lol). There is still value in the ps3 and vita. I know people (myself included) who would spend money on those stores.

  • For the first time since I was a kid and got my original PSX, I was questioning my dedication to the brand. I’m so glad to see the decision was reversed because games need to be preserved. My hole is that, if Sony chooses to close the stores in the future, they find an avenue to make the same games available on whatever current gen system is available at the time so we can continue to have the great classics we love

  • It is the right decision. that they keep them alive for many more years. there is something called loyalty with customers, especially with the oldest.

there are many people who continue to play on ps3 | psvita and many people who want to buy games for these platforms. There are people who continue to play a lot online. not everyone has to buy a ps4 or a ps5. I have a ps4 and I play more on my ps3, I am getting to know very good games.

to be more active they must re-revitalize the ps3 store and vita with discounts and offers. There are many people who want to buy games but the prices are too high.

With everything that happened, many YouTube channels are recommending ps3, psvita and psp games, which I had no idea that existed and I want to buy them, revitalize the store with more accessible prices.

PS: return the deleted DLCs and games from the ps store on PS3!

  • Sorry I’m late, but i really wanted to thank you guys and community for bringing ps3 and ps vita store back !

P.D2: psvita memory prices are too expensive, a 64GB memory costs 90US! or with a firmware update allow memory from other manufacturers to be used.

  • Well done Sony always listening to your custerners first with out us you would not exist.

  • Hi I was wonding if you will be brining back the search on this site to make it easier to find the older games. Also it would be great as well for t he same thing for the psp

  • Thanks to Sony for rethinking and correcting bad decision.

  • This is really good to hear. But there is one huge issue: the prices. The games for PS3 are much better than 90% of those for PS4, and those 10% are mostly PS3 games “updated” to run on PS4. However those games are much older and it’s logical to sell them cheaper, but we still have to buy them at the same price as PS4 or even PS5 titles. Why? Yes, they are better, but make discounts at least. For the price of one PS3 game I can buy from 2 to 7 PS4 games during sales, that’s rediculous.

    So my points are:
    A) Great that PSStore stays on PS3 and Vita.
    B) Return the discounts for PS3 games (at least couple times a year).
    C) If the PSPlus subscription will return to having PS3 games in the bundle – that’d be awesome.

Small note on the mentioned port of Genshin impact to PS5: I wanted to try this game. Installed on my PS4Pro. It reaches the part where you need to choose a boy-ish or a girl-ish avatar. Then it gets stuck. Nothing happens for hours and I have to quit the game via PS button menu. Also on the main screen all the options have (?) Instead of button icons like (X), (O), (R2) etc. MB try fixing this first?

  • Glad to hear the great news. This would’ve been a huge lost in the Playstation community. Now let’s keep ps3 and vita alive. Hopefully we can get some new indy titles or something added on in the future.

  • Thank you Jim and Sony, this was the only right decision to make, already closing these stores would’ve been a disgrace honestly, locking all these beautiful games away from potential buyers just to save (?) a couple of bucks.

Now, if you could please fix the CMOS battery problem on the PS3, PS4 and PS5 that would be even better, because if nothing happens, we won’t be able to play our games from Disc or digital on these devices in the future, thanks to DRM garbage.

  • Thank you! I just got the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for PS3 so I’m excited to hear that your keeping the stores open (:

  • Nice to hear that, can Sony come up with a firmware update for supporting SD cards on vita console since they are cheaper and we can buy and store more ps vita games on our console with out paying scalpers with outrageous prices on a 64g vita memory’s for 100-120$, and look for the ps3 ps4 ps5 battery problem, and we need some sales on vita and ps3 games too, example NBA LIVE 2018 ps3 version cost 59$ and the ps4 version 29$?!?

  • where are all my PS3 purchased games at? there no longer in my transaction history! and no, i no longer own a ps3 just curious to if my games were still there as i was looking to buy an older console for retro spec.

    • i had 161 ps3 digital titles let alone all the other DLC content purchased. to where as now it shows ONLY 4 purchases made all the way back to 2006 when i wasnt playing on this account.

  • Didn’t post a blog about the closure but do about not closing them. You don’t get credit for “doing the right thing” Sony, you were forced to…

  • When is this going to take affect? I just plugged in my PS3 and I still can’t buy any games :s

    • I would love to know this aswell

    • They did not take away the ability to buy games on PS3, they were going to in a few months. If you are unable to use the store, you either need to update your system or there is another problem you need to contact customer support about

  • Holy @#@@! This many people still play PS3. I thought I was the only one. This is #@#!ing incredible. Thank you, Sony, and the public for keeping this going.

  • I’m very happy. Thanks for making up your mind Ps3 is, at least for now, very important for PlayStation history. There are a lot of ps4 games that come from this generation, and are exclusively for Ps3. :D

  • THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH JIM , FROM ALL OF US BROKE FOLKS & THE OTHER PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF , THAT STILL CAN’T EVEN AFFORD TO BUY A PS4 , LET ALONE A PS5 & STILL CONSTANTLY PLAY ON OUR PS3’S DAILY FOR THE MOST PART , AS WELL AS CONSTANTLY CHECKING FOR NEW UPDATES FOR OUR SYSTEMS & CHECKING FOR SALES ON GAMES THAT WE STILL DON’T OWN YET , BUT WOULD LIKE TO SOME DAY !! … THIS IS TRULY AWESOME NEWS , OR AT LEAST TO ME IT IS ANYWAYS !! 😉

    • PS Jim … It would be REALLY AWESOME as well , if y’all were to add some PS3 games to the free to own , ” play at home ” games being released , for the people like myself that still don’t own a PS4 or PS5 yet , so that we too can have some free games to download and play immediately during this Covid-19 pandemic , like the PS4 & PS5 owners have been able to do since last year when the ” play at home ” idea was 1st started … Thank you for any consideration that you may give to this idea Jim , stay safe & God Bless 😉

  • So happy that Sony reversed their decision! They deserve kudos for that regardless of the initial bad decision. I didn’t feel like rewarding Sony by buying the few digital PS3 and Vita titles that aren’t a part of my collection…until now! I look forward to making some PS3 and PSTV purchases. There is still plenty of quality gaming on PS3 and Vita not available on any other platform.

  • I think the ps3 systems should be continued and newer games to still be made for the ps3 that can run on the ps3

  • This was the right decision. People like myself still play ps3 and vita. The ps3 has a tremendous library of games that you can only play on the ps3. Now that Sony has taken it to this point, we need some sales on these stores. I and others would spend money on reasonably priced retro games. Come on, Sony. Let’s go!

  • PlayStation needs to learn the lesson and have better support for Backwards Compatibility games.

It should not be that hard to recompile PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and PS Vita/TV games on to PS4 and PS5.
    Maybe not PS3 on PS4.
You even have a patent to add trophy 🏆 support on old games.

You can’t just recompile games, it needs higher resolution and high frame rate improvements, most emulators have those. You need smoothing, but also adding strong Anti-Aliasing especially of those old jaggy games. 🏆 Support.

If a higher resolution texture is possible without a tremendous cost (meaning machine learning to bring the texture resolution to be better) that would be a plus.

You can have a 25$ a year subscription for those Retro games, with the possibility to buy the games individually as well.
The subscription would be like Nintendo Online where they offer Retro games NES and SNES.
And also offer 1Gb of Online Storage (you’d need Plus ➕ to get more)

    • I see this subscription to be multi-tier.

The base one would be “25$” and include all Retro games from PS1, PS2, PSP, Vita and even some PS3 and potentially Remasters of old games.

Then you’d have an Instant Game Collection where you’d get all of the Retro games Plus PS4 games you can download from PS Now.
That would help the pricing to acquire better games for the services.

And Finally the last one would be PS Now where you also get the Cloud base streaming for all games.
I would remove the 3 month plan for a 4 month plan with another price.

      *Prices could vary.
Game Pass is actually more pricey, up to 15$ a month instead of 10$, that brings more revenu to get more games.

Lots of people just want to download and play games. You already added day one games to PS+ but PS Now deserves much more love. If 95% of PS5 owners have ➕ plus, then you need to entice more people to get PS Now as well.

  • Just a crazy idea…Maybe port the classic games to Android and open a store there…Like PSOne/PSP/PSVita and if it’s able PS2 games all with DS4/5 controller support. Sure there are Emulators for Android available…honestly though I’d rather pay Playstation to have real games on Android Mobile. If Epic can run Fortnite, Codemasters can Run GRID: Autosports, EA can run Need For Speed, Activison with Call of Duty…Why not Sony with real games, Lets see some God of War, inFAMOUS (with Cole), Sly Cooper, Spyro the Dragon, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone…and so on…with real entries to the franchise on the Android Mobile (and sure iOS eventually) platform(Dualshock4/DualSense5 controller support is a must have). I get it’s not about technical know how, it’s legal dealings that hold things up….

  • Thank you. Perhaps look at bringing past ps1, ps2 and ps3 games that didnt have trophies eg Dino Crisis 1 and 2. Demand for classic games are very much alive. Perhaps an update on Ps4 or Ps5 in the future?

  • Thank you!

  • Great news except there is not buy option on the store. Would love to purchase a game but cant

  • Why have you messed up the EU /Uk store on ps4 and made it a copy of the USA store. We had a tab for new add ons hidden at the end of the games part and now you have removed it just like the USA store making it impossible to find new dlc for games I own. Why did you make it so messed up, it was simple you logged in looked at it then left now I have to search for it or go to every game and see if new dlc is available

  • Thank you for caring
