PS5 April Update brings new storage options and social features

First major PS5 console update lets you store PS5 games on USB extended storage, share gameplay across PS5 and PS4 consoles, and more.

The first major system software update for the PS5 console is rolling out globally tomorrow, and it’s packed with new features and improvements. Our team is passionate about enhancing your experience on PlayStation in every possible way, so here’s a glimpse at what’s coming for PS5, PS4, and PlayStation App:

PS5 Storage Expansion and Management

  • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
  • Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.

As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog.

New Social Features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles

  • Cross-generation Share Play. PS4 and PS5 players can now Share Play together while chatting in parties. This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen, or even try out the PS5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend, pass your controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together.
  • Request to Join Game Session. A selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will now appear on both PS5 and PS4 consoles, allowing for more gameplay opportunities together. The “Request to Join” option also serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite, reducing the time it takes for you to get into games with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can modify who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.

Enhanced Control and Personalization Options for PS5 Consoles

  • Improved Game Base. The Game Base menu has been improved for quicker access to important content and features. You can now easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with your existing parties or see what each of your online friends is up to. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.

  • Disable Game Chat or Adjust Players’ Volume. You can now quickly disable in-game chat, which turns off your mic audio and the voice audio of other players. Additionally, you can easily adjust the individual voice chat volume of other players in the same chat so you don’t have to ask your friends to lower or increase their mic volume each time.
  • Game Update Pre-download. Once it’s enabled by developers, title updates for games will pre-download to your console if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled and your console is on or in rest mode. This will let you start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.
  • Customize Game Library. With the ability to hide games from view, it’s now easier to find content and personalize your view of your game library.
  • Screen Zoom. You can now adjust the magnification of the screen to suit your preference from the Settings menu.
  • New Trophy Settings and Stats Screen. The level of trophies that results in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can now be customized — so you can now choose to only capture and save images/videos of moments when you earn higher-grade trophies, like Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new player Trophy Stats screen, where you can check out the summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.

New Features for PlayStation App

We’re also introducing a myriad of new features for PlayStation App to make it easier than ever to connect with your console experience remotely. Recently, we introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when your friends are online, and change your console online status. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out even more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store. You can download PlayStation App for free from Google Play and the App Store.

We’re only scratching the surface of the many updates and improvements we’ve made across PS5, PS4, and PS App, so check them out and let us know what you think!

  • I hope Rest Mode gets more stable but overall, these are great updates!

  • I hope the ability to play ps1/ps2/ps3 games is one of those things you are going to add. Microsoft is killing you in the backwards compatibility arena. There’s no excuse not to have it. We already know Sony’s emulators are out there working (search for jailbroken systems). We don’t necessarily need trophy support for all games, that’s been an excuse previously. We just want the option to occasionally pop in an old game to play for a bit. We don’t necessarily want to have to also dig out the old systems to play, when we have a system that has more processing power in both CPU and GPU. 1 system, all generations. And if you don’t want backwards compatibility, then no one is forcing you to use it, it’s just a nice to have feature, that would be nice to have.

  • Why can’t PlayStation make their custom SSD available for the public to buy as extended storage so that we don’t have to go through the copying process and just be able to play the games instantly? It’ll just be more convenient to be honest.

  • Great update! Could you bring back internet browser like it was on ps4 in a future update?

  • I really would like to see a feature that will allow me to choose where voice chat audio is comming out from. ITs very annoying that there by force it has to be the controller if you dont have a head set attached. What if I use the pc for streaming and need both game and chat audio to go through HDMI? please help with this.

  • Can we please, please get the ability to zoom photos on the app?????

  • Would just be nice to be able to buy one without it costing the earth from some re-seller.

  • Really no wireless keyboards support using usb dongle? These keyboards do not work on ps5 while work on other consoles, work on linux (out of the box), work on mac (also out of the box), work on windows (same, out of the box). No additional drivers needed. But not on ps5. I could “blame” keyboards but it looks that ps5 operating system is lacking here especially that it detects connected keyboards but simply doesn’t react at 95% of keys (only few keys are working on some such keyboards). There is reddit thread about supported keyboards and the list is so limited for ps5.

    • Probably something wrong with your keyboard and the range from your keyboard. I have a few that I’ve used before settling on my Natural Keyboard 7000 from MS.

You really shouldn’t need a special driver with a dongle. It’s basically just reported as a standard USB keyboard. Unless the keyboard is horribly out of spec or part of some obsolete USB standard.

  • Finally was wondering when we’d start to see more updates. First I like these changes, especially game base (stupid name btw), External Storage and restore features for PS5 titles, and the library changes.

    What I didn’t see:
    * Bug fix for deleting a game from the media bar leaving a download stub eating up one of my current games played slots. You have to start the download then cancel to get rid of it. I had 3 of these before I figured out that my precious slots were taken and my list was for some reason getting frustratingly smaller.

    * An option to increase the number of Slots on the media bar for games. I’d like to have 15 if possible. I play a lot of different games at any given time and it is frustrating to go into a library that doesn’t even save its state.

    * Option for the games library to set the default sorting pattern

    * Library search filter was added.

    * Ability to Pin games to the media bar.

    * Easier access to the trophies list. Let’s face it some developers aren’t getting the most out of the activity bar. I’d very much like the choice to PIN THE TROPHY I’M WORKING ON to it. I don’t care about Call of Duty multiplayer matches that keep crashing the game every time I select an activity from the bar. Right now looking up trophies takes too many steps and has too many button presses to get back and forth from my game.

    * What happened to that pin trophy progress to the side of the screen feature. Did I dream that? Could have sworn that was a day one feature announced last year.

    * Ability to allow PS4 controllers on certain PS5 games. Let’s face it not all of my arcade sticks work with PS5 games for one reason or another. I’d very much like to play MK11 & Guilty Gear with an Arcade stick on PS5 that I already own. Seriously considering just buying on PC.

    * Ability to play PS1 classics downloads and PS2 titles DVD or Download on PS5.

    * The expansion bay, please get on it. FF14 and CoD are making my life miserable with these PS5 versions. I don’t care if I can uninstall part of the game or not. I have a lot of PS5 games right now that I’m in the middle of and its only going to get worse if more fighting games and mp games I play are released on PS5.

    PlayStation 4
    * Fix for the CMOS bug that causes trophy security measures to prevent the booting up of PS4 Discs. This should have never been a thing. You need to prove to me that my PS5 won’t do the same thing in 10 to 15 years. There was a time were sony cared about our libraries.

    • Another way to fix the stupid blank tiles after deleting a game: Restore Licences.

Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licences.

This closes your apps and takes a minute or two but will clear all blank tiles.

    • This update is fixing that issue, so…

  • This is great news. I hope this update will actually make it so that my PlayStation doesn’t crash during the power on sequence when my external ssd is connected. It always worked fine on PS4 pro but has a million problems on PS5. It’s been 5 months of frustration.

  • Sony, please add 1440p support! I don’t want to play fuzzy 1080p games on my PC monitor. ='(

  • Let us play our ps3, ps2 & ps1 digital library already. But “who would want to play those old games”

  • I love everything the PlayStation is doing I really needed the features so I can finally game share with friends on other systems it was a little annoying so thank you for that, but just wanna say where is the internet browser app I’m pretty suprised we don’t have it yet but I’m sure we’ll get it soon

    • Still have zero relevant features to 2021. No VRR. No 3D audio(real 3d audio, for real speakers. No one cares about headphones. That’s easy to do), and no Dolby vision.
Until they do all of these things, I’m out, and going with a company that has all of those things.

Who the hell would play their 3rd party games on ps5 when they can have vrr Dolby vision and Dolby atmos? They are fat and happy, and care more about gimmicks for children than remaining relevant.

  • This is absolutely unacceptable that you guys still don’t have VRR, 3d audio, and no mention of Dolby vision.
Sony is way too fat and happy, and I’ll be getting an Xbox as soon as I can find one.
Tell me why the heck anyone would play a game with the screen tearing every 2 seconds when they can play on Xbox, who has had this since 2017.

Lack of 3D audio is just as ridiculous as lack of VRR. Headphones are not 3D audio.

7.1lpcm&hdr10…yea, welcome to 2015. I could not be more disappointed in Sony, and this announcement does it for me.
I’m going to go with a company that’s actively trying to win my business, over one I’ve supported for 20 years and has no interest in any relevant features.

Every single one of your products since 2018 have had 3D audio and Dolby vision…besides the ps5. You don’t even acknowledge its existence.

I’m not the only one jumping ship. You better believe we all didn’t go out and get $3-$4,000 tvs and speakers all around us, to play in HDR10, without VRR, in max 7.1.

    Pathetic

    • You do know you’re in the minority here and most people either don’t care/are not in a position to have bought a dedicated setup just for gaming, right?

Anyways, I sympathise with you. You should absolutely go with the console you believe will give you the best experience at the end of the day.

  • These are welcoming additions, I am especially happy about the Share Play part because I’m the only so far who has transitioned to PS5 and now my friends can see what I am playing outside of streaming to Twitch/YouTube

  • I hope they can change this in the future “Two or more USB extended storage drives can’t be connected at the same time. You can connect multiple USB drives to your console, but you can use only one at a time.”

It would be great to have option of allowing 2 drives at least that are accesible at the same time, to help with backup and space purposes for pepleo that have a big library.

  • Hi, sony, playstation, please can add a setting for audio to output audio via USB-Headset plus same time via HDMI, will help lot for streamer, content creator. So we can use headset and capture card, without 3-5 cables. Help a lot

  • so glad that sony listen to the community.
look at the 1440p support we get not after 6 months

  • Any news on when will you be able to hide the HD cam while streaming? I can’t believe this simple function is not there.

Have you ever met anyone who wants to watch their own mug on the game screen while playing? Yeah, me neither.

  • VRR, ALLM, 1440p, Dolby Vision, Quick Resume have what in common? Right, still missing on the PS5 while the competition has all this. Plus they care about their legacy while Sony doesn’t care about anything before the PS4 anymore.

    • To be fair, most of the people who complain that they want PS3 and earlier support would then go on to not buy and/or play those games for the most part. Sony simply calculated that it wasn’t worth the cost.

      As to the rest:
      – 1440p & VRR must absolutely come, along with being able to choose framerate, Ray Tracing, and resolution separately in games.
      – Quick Resume: Lords, yes.
      – Dolby vision: Meh.
      – ALLM: What’s this one?

  • All I really want from an update is VRR. The rest can wait.
I know it’s a niche feature since very few people have the display to match, but it’s such a transformative one.
Sony should cater to us early adopters, because we’re the ones people come for opinions such as which console to buy.

  • No offence, but these are all things that should have been running from the jump. These are not features. I would call them basics. shrug.

  • subscribe preview updates dasbord like on xbox or ps4

  • It’s nice to see more meaningful updates to the party system. I just hope that the member-specific voice volume control is also added to the PS4 in a later update.

Overall, looks like a great update!

  • Hopefully we get an update that’ll let us play ps1 thru PS3 games… Cause man, really getting tired of the garbage Sony is doing lately.

  • The pulse headset needs updating as mine cuts out frequently.

  • Wish I could find one to buy… the roll out was disappointing. With the lack of consoles.

  • Thanks for the update. Please add 1440p support.

  • 1440p and VRR support please!

    • I would love to see 1440p support we don’t all have a spare 4k tv with hdmi 2.1 variable refresh rate…

  • Yes !!! Cross-platform shareplay I’m so happy !!! 🤩

  • Ok at least it’s a decent start but I don’t see when is this update doing live? Tomorrow?

  • Please, please address the controller freeze/ crashes (everytime without fail) when playing Call of Duty PS5 version, a complete reset has to be done when this happens, I can only play the PS4 version. Surely I’m not the only one? Will we ever see support for 1440p gaming monitors @ 120hz like Xbox it’s a serious gaming machine?

  • Would like to see the ability to share directly to Facebook.

Would also like to see a YouTube music app, and the ability to make custom playlists while playing games. With GranTurismo coming for PS5 I would like to have custom playlists like in the PS3 days.

  • Is that 4K 120hz HDR fix for Samsung TVs included in this firmware?

  • Omits audible sigh… Please fix the controller freeze/ crashes while playing Call of Duty and other PS5 games and support 1440p we don’t all have a spare 4k HDMI 2.1 variable refresh rate TV.. Thanks in advance

  • The update is a weak. PS5, like PS4, is still limited to ONE external device not larger than 8 TB. By contrast Xbox Series S/X can have as many external devices as there are USB ports. You can have at least 16 TB of external storage, not counting adding 1 TB SSD expansion storage. Even with 2 TB SSD (plus 16 TB external) on my Xbox Series X I am still juggling titles around. On my PS5, it’s so much worse because 665 TB is TINY. My external storage (7200 RPM, 8 TB) is already pretty much maxed out, so moving PS5 games to it isn’t helpful.

Sony removed gamer activity feed from PS5. They removed folders. They removed themes. You can’t even watch a Disney+ and turn off your controller because turning off your controller requires you to exit the app. PS4 didn’t have that handicap.

Sony removed ratings from the PS5 store. On Xbox you can write a full review.

By destroying legacy consoles (PSP, PS3, and Vita) and limited gamer feedback on the PS5 platform Sony is continuing to show that they don’t care about their customers. They weren’t always this bad. For whatever reason they are anti-consumer in 2021. That’s not a good thing that speaks well for PS5 going forward.

    • Xbox is bland trash, nonetheless. If you live it so much why are you wasting your time here, simpleton?

  • Ok. This is a step in the right direction. Very happy to hear that I finally get to expand my storage for ps5 (Cause 600+ gb of memory was not going to last long) The additional features to share play is welcome. And I’m looking forward to testing it out tomorrow if I can get a friend to help me out. The PS app is also nice. Being able to talk and chill with you friends on a app or the console is going to be very welcomed as well. Thank you Sony. Now all you got to do is get Backwards combability with older generations on the ps5 and you’ll see some very happy gamers again. C’mon PlayStation get your head on right.

  • Please made the Final ps3/psvita mega sale <3

  • Hey guys,
I understand that some of the following could already be made better by this update, but in any case, here are 4 things I’d love to see fixed after 4 months of using the PS5.

    1. UI – Customisability, Trophies & Feature Parity with PS4
It’s no secret to anyone who has actually used the PS5 UI that there are a number of things which simply take longer to do than they used to. Namely, almost everything that could be accessed from the PS4 Quick Menu (long press on PS button). For me, the most frustrating is looking for the option to toggle between Chat Audio & All Audio after you plug in headphones into the DualSense. Right now, assuming you are in game, you must go to PS Home > Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Headphones > Output to Headphones (only shows up if headphones are already connected).
Now let’s talk about Trophies here. Their implementation on PS5 needs to be improved with the ability to ‘pin’ certain activity cards. Furthermore, accessing your full trophy list at the moment requires more UI gymnastics. And once you get there, the trophies are presented in a space inefficient horizontal bar.

    2. Suspend & Resume for more than one game.
The ability to suspend a game first came to the PS4 before almost anywhere else. Sony must double down on this feature because it makes things so much easier. I believe giving the option to people to allocate part of their SSD space to this would make sense. I for one wouldn’t mind reserving 50+Gb or so for this feature if this could mean I have 3 or more games in rotation. It would be even better if PS5 could leverage external SSDs in particular, for this ‘Quick Resume’ like feature. It may be slower than using the internal SSD but giving people the option would be appreciated.

    3. Improve PS save transfers.
A major gripe I have with the PlayStation ecosystem on a whole is that I feel punished for owning multiple consoles. Although I have PS+, and therefore can upload saves to the cloud automatically, this only works on a ‘primary’ console.
Last gen on PS4, I had a primary console at my place, and secondary console at my partner’s. Going over to her place and continuing my progress there, meant that I needed to remember to manually upload my saves to the cloud, because PS+ will not auto upload from secondary consoles. At least 3 times, I would leave her place. Get home. Hop on, only to realise that my latest save was being kept prisoner on ‘her’ PS4. So I had to drive back there, and manually upload the save. Then drive home and manually download it.
I don’t believe Xbox makes any such distinction, with people being able to stop playing on one console, and immediately pick up on another.
Another related issue is the jumbled mess of PS4 to PS5 save transfers which have come out lately. Personally, I’m less fussed about these as it is a one time process for the most part. But I imagine that if a single player game had cross progression b/w PS4 & PS5, and you kept hopping platforms, that might get real tedious, real quick.

    4. Game Library Management
Give us the ability to organise games in folders in the library tab, as well as ‘pin’ games to the main game bar. I’m currently clearing out my shameful back catalog, as well as trying out some indie games here and there. No problem, I’m playing games. But right now, I have to use an external device (smartphone or pen & paper) to track which games are in which list. Simply put folders under the game library tab, so they are neatly tucked away.
As well as this, if I have a game I always go to, let me pin it in place so that I always know where it is. That way, I can try more games, decide if they are for me, but when it’s time to hop online with the crew, I know just where to go.

  • For the remote play app – How come you still force the requirement of Wi-Fi in order to use it? What if I have a super fast 5G connection on an unlimited data plan? Please release this restriction.

  • nice now need to add backup game saves to USB for save keeping. I like having backups of backups.

  • Checking trophies is the only thing I do during gaming and it’s clumsy. Why not add an icon for trophies in the control center?

Secondly, all content is automatically ‘followed’ and I have to ‘unfollow’ EVERYTHING (three dots) not to get news on my control center. Fix this major annoyance!

    • “You can now manage all the games you follow. This allows you to unfollow games without having to navigate to the individual new posts or game hubs”

Thank you! Can’t believe one of the biggest issues for me got solved already! Now I just hope it works :)

    • Ok so I gave this a try and while a hub to manage this is definitely an improvement, it doesn’t exactly fix the problem. Why are games followed by default? This means I still have to go constantly unfollow games in the future (eventhough they’re all bundled now in a hub). It’s the same thing with the controller mic. Why are these things on by default instead of letting us choose whether it should be on or off by default? Tired of these social media influences in general.

  • Wow I’m pretty disappointed about this storage update. I bought a 500$ m.2 memory card and still can’t use it lol. I love PlayStation but I’m speechless…..what’s going on….😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

  • Thank goodness! I can finally store all the PS5 games and upgrades I’ve been collecting but haven’t downloaded to my console due to its paltry SSD capacity.

  • It’s incredibly frustrating that you are still blocking players from using Dualshock 4 controllers on PS5 games for no valid technical reason. People can now play PS5 games using a Dualshock 4 through share play, remote play or even play PS5 games on a phone with a touchscreen, yet you block them from using a Dualshock 4 on their actual console. It comes off as completely lacking in good will to your customers and a transparent attempt to force people to spend $70 extra just so their friends and family can join in locally. Clearly this is not a technical limitation and you do not have a philosophical issue with people experiencing PS5 games without a Dualsense. Please show some appreciation to customers who have already invested in your products. If the Dualsense is as awesome as you are advertising, most people will still want to use it by default, but this will give people more options to play together. Please reverse this policy.

  • Will this update allow PS4 users to view content shared from a PS5 in their messages?

  • This would be awesome news if I could actually get a PS5. 6 months after launch, and I still can’t get one. I have owned PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS4 Pro, PSP, and PS Vita. I never had this much trouble getting a past Sony console.

  • Could we please have Picture 2 Picture streaming app’s while gaming?? :)

  • I WANT TO SEE MY SCREENSHOTS AND SAVED VIDEOS IN THE PHONE APP!!!

  • Please can somebody give me any insight on if Sony or PlayStation will EVER release a “pro” controller with paddles buttons?(think scuff style). Ideally something that rivals the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller. Or even just a back button attachment for ps5. .I know about the patent for ds5 back button.
