Next-gen VR on PS5: the new controller

Stronger immersion with adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, finger-touch detection and more.

Following the recent reveal of our next-generation virtual reality system for PS5, I’m excited to unveil more details about the new controller that will play a critical role in providing gamers with the VR experience we’re working to deliver. Our new VR controller speaks to our mission of achieving a much deeper sense of presence and stronger feeling of immersion in VR experiences. It will build upon the innovation we introduced with the DualSense wireless controller, which changed how games “feel” on PS5 by unlocking a new way to tap into the sense of touch. Now we’re bringing that innovation to VR gaming.

VR Controller

Design

The first thing you’ll notice with our next-gen VR controller is the unique design, which takes on an “orb” shape that allows you to hold the controller naturally, while playing with a high degree of freedom. There are no constraints with how you’re moving your hands, providing developers with the ability to create unique gameplay experiences.

We also designed the new controller with great ergonomics in mind, so it’s well-balanced and comfortable to hold in each of your hands. We applied learnings from testing users with a range of hand sizes, as well as the decades of insights from controllers across all PlayStation platforms. The result is an iconic design that will change how VR games are played.

Features

The new VR controller enables players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. There are several features, including key features from the DualSense controller, which match our vision for what next-generation VR games can be.

●      Adaptive triggers: Each VR controller (Left and Right) includes an adaptive trigger button that adds palpable tension when pressed, similar to what’s found in the DualSense controller. If you’ve played a PS5 game, you’ll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you’re drawing your bow to fire an arrow. When you take that kind of mechanic and apply it to VR, the experience is amplified to the next level.

●       Haptic feedback: The new controller will have haptic feedback optimized for its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more impactful, textured and nuanced. When you’re traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.

●       Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

●       Tracking: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

●       Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The “grip” button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

SIE’s Product, Engineering, and Design teams have collaborated to build our new VR controller from the ground up with a goal of making a huge leap from current-gen VR gaming. We’re thrilled with the controller we developed, but what matters now is how game creators will take advantage of the features to design the next generation of VR experiences. Prototypes of our new VR controller will be in the hands of the development community soon, and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with and how the controller helps bring their imagination to life!

There’s still much more to share about the next-generation of VR on PS5. On behalf of all of us at SIE, I want to thank you for taking this journey with us!

  • This is awesome, but can I please get the camera adapter for my PS5? It shipped in December and I still haven’t received it!

  • “It will build upon the innovation we introduced with the DualSense wireless controller, which changed how games […]”

“Innovation”? You talk as if Nintendo didn’t do the same thing over three and a half years earlier.

    • The controllers looks amazing.
My main request for PS VR 2 is to have it 100% wireless.
Other wireless VR Headsets comes out at 200$ USD for it’s fairly cheap.
People willing to invest the big $ into VR are willing to do so to get the absolute best experience.
It’s not to say everyone will spend 800$ on a VR Headset obviously and it should not be 800$.
But Wireless is cheap enough to get included as the prices went down from when it initially released.
Have it feel feel like the best possible experience without charging to much for it.
Keep what’s essentials and cut the unnecessary.
Make a poll asking what PS fans want out of PS VR 2 if you’re unsure.

  • Like the philosopher DJ Khaled said in his magnum opus… “I like that!”

  • Hey PlayStation. I wanted to ask when is the next-gen VR is coming out. I don’t really read your stuff about the VR. I wanted to know because I’m working up for a VR next-gen headset. Please let me know. I really want the next-gen VR headset. See ya!

    • Judging by the speed that they already revealed the controller, it’d be safe to expect it around 2022 to 2023! Good luck with the saving by the way!

  • That’s nice, but the headset is wired. The biggest gripe about PSVR 1.0 is the wires. Going to be jumping to PC VR if that doesn’t change. There is no excuse in this day and age to not go wireless. Everyone else has managed it.

    • Sony never had a chance to go wireless because of the potential risk on health derived from the usage of high-intensity wireless devices. One single case of brain cancer that could be associated to the headset in a trial and the PSVR2 is done for good.
      Wired was the sane choice.

    • They did state how they wanted to utilise the power of the ps5. If it were wireless it’d pretty much be it’s own device and with lower specs. Plus Vincentecarro mentioned the health risks too! I still believe wireless would’ve been nicer though. However for such a giant company such as Sony, if they muck up their whole legacy will crumble.

  • The first thing I noticed is it’s black! I hope the final version will be white so it’ll match my white ps5 and white theme game room.

  • I’m wishing we would get a all black ps5 considering the psvr2 controllers are black, I assume the headset would be black too and in that case they need to drop a all black ps5

    • Please keep in mind this is a prototype of the controller. What you see here is the final design (albeit with a few adjustments required) but not the final colour scheme. I could 100% be wrong but I’m pretty sure it will pick up some white accents along the way!

  • OMG Sounds amazing and the images look promising to what the PSVR2 needs, I cannot WAIT for this, want this soooo bad!

  • Looks… very much like Oculus touch (obviously adaptive triggers are an improvement). Not a complaint. Worlds better than moves for this job.

So… BIG question. I’m and English teacher. I’m living in China and will likely continue to live abroad for the foreseeable future (but not China) and I have a Japanese PS5 and a Japanese PSVR and no real US address. Is there any way for me to get my PSVR adapter? China isn’t an option on any of the pages I’ve seen (and different pages give different information, such as one only showing Mexico, US, and Canada, and one showing a bunch of different countries but neither China nor Japan is on the list) I’m not asking for a freebie. I know I’m a special case, but I’d pay to have one sent to me here. I just need to know HOW (being able to pay in RMB would be best, too). The all-powerful Taobao hasn’t helped my cause here, either, which makes sense (resellers on Taobao wouldn’t have access to the free adapters going out to Japan)

There’s a good chance I’ll have to leave my PS4 behind when I leave China in the Summer as all sensitive electronics have to be carry-on and I’ve got a LOT to take, and that will be more than fine IF I can still use my PSVR. I don’t want to abandon it, but I’ll have to if I can’t use it on the PS5. This whole “just keep everything” mentality that a lot of hardcore fans have isn’t feasible for me.

    • I ran into the same problem! I ordered mine in December and received it roughly two months later, when emailed Sony mentioned “Shipping issues” so it’s very likely you are experiencing that! Nothing to worry though, you should get yours at about the same time period as me.

  • I’m wondering it the controller has enough buttons per hand.
Well I guess your average VR player wouldn’t know where to press certain buttons and be confused about them.
I don’t hope it won’t hinder the experience. Looks amazing so far, the first one was really great.
If anything the next headset absolutely 100% needs to be wireless.
Having cables hanging everywhere is not only cumbersome but also a hazard when playing VR.
It ain’t that much more expensive to make it wireless.
There are wireless VR headsets going to 200$, it has become very cheap.

    • If you’re referring to the Oculus Quest, that headset is wireless because all the processing hardware is contained in the headset. So it’s not actually wireless. There’s just no communication necessary other than between the headset and controllers. You can optionally connect it to a PC with a cable.

The hardware to support the high bandwidth wireless connection required between the headset and PS5 is actually very expensive. The HTC Vive wireless adapter costs $350 ALONE.

I do think Sony should build in support for an optional wireless adapter that they can release down the line when the tech becomes more affordable. But including it at launch would be far too cost prohibitive.

  • Very exciting.

I hope these support the ability for the user to open their hands like the valve index does. It doesn’t look like it from the images, but I’ll remain optimistic.

Also, if PlayStation can get Half Life Alyx as a launch title, these will be a massive success.

  • PS HOME F2P in a VR CHAT environment, you can have microtransaction for pre made licensed character models and costumes. a character creation screen for everyone and tools to build worlds/Mini games. I really hope Sony do something like this, I’m willing to Co-Direct fulltime with ideas and get my hands dirty with the Art

  • How much longer do we have to wait does anybody know?

  • Can the PS4 VR titles be played on this through the PS5? I can’t see this being less than £349.

  • Compared to the other more “wilder” VR controllers out there, these looks pretty standard design-wise, which is a good thing imo.

  • Does this new gear have the ability to keep me from throwing up due to motion sickness? Only reason I will not buy any more VR gear as it is horrible for someone like me that gets motion sick very easily. Rather than making things look pretty, this is an area that should be solved because everyone who has ever gotten sick from VR would jump back in if there was no more barfing involved!

    • Agreed! I don’t suffer from severe motion sickness but that is definitely something to look into

  • oh mah feature-istic soul! These look amazing!

  • It’s interesting how the controller doesn’t match the ps5 colour scheme, perhaps the headset and controllers are going for a very simple coloration. I can respect that! 👍

  • Very nice, wanted to buy a Quest 2, but don’t want anything to do with Facebook. PSVR2 is veeeeery welcome :) Hope it’s not too far away.

  • There is a major issue I think. Because of the reduced number of buttons, most PSVR(PS4) games won’t be compatible with these controllers since they use more buttons. :(
In other words these are controllers exclusively for PSVR2 games.

  • My only concern is the one cord thing, will it connect to the back or front? My only reason to ask this question is that if it connects to the front it runs the risk of getting yanked out of the console and this could become a nuisance for those who get way too immersed and end up pulling on their cord as a result of walking around. Just voicing my opinion, no hate whatsoever and I frankly can’t wait!

  • What’s a PS5?

  • That’s cool, but I haven’t seen PS5 yet. And I don’t want it already.

  • Sony: *releases PSVR 2 controllers*

    Scalpers: Let’s do this again.

  • It looks great. However I have a concern with the face button placements. It looks like you will have to take your thumb off the left stick thus stopping movement in order to press square or triangle. Similarly you will have to take your thumb off the right stick to press circle or x stopping whatever you were doing with that stick. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

  • Ok, but no new VR headset🤔🤔🤔

  • these look like fighting gloves but ngl they look fresh

  • That looks bizarre…is there a reason for that orb around the controller?…does any tech go in there?…in the post there’s nothing written about that and it looks like the orb is there just for looks which if true is unnecessary. Then it could be just the actual controllers you know the part where you’ll be holding with your hands.

  • Why is it all Black if the console is black and white also the controller
    But very good design

  • So would this work in the Old PSVR headsets or will we have to buy a whole new headset, new camera and stuff?

  • I really hope you can work with Valve to bring Half Life Alyx to PSVR2, that would make it an instant buy for me

  • Hey Sony/PlayStation it would be cool if you could have first-party knuckle straps or just added them to the actual controller.

  • Niiiice

  • Awesome work SONY. I like those. Really. But I see that is the time to sell PSVR because there is gonna be new helmet. I´m a real fan of PS had all the versions all accessories but sometimes was disappointed like with regional games, no codec support on your player no VLC support, there is a lot of flaws. The biggest one is my PS Pro first edition which is cooling like crazy and its too noisy!!! Where you should do something about it… And of top of that I´m still waiting to mine PS5 payed 1/2 YEAR AGO! So maybe it will be better to supply PS5 first and then release these news and new products and games that we can not play…

  • hi

  • Looks amazing!, But hopefully we get the 4 directional buttons on the left; and the triangle, circle , x and square on the right. Fingers crossed!

  • still trying for PS5 but when i get it ill be looking out for this VR cause it looks awesome no cap

  • So I’m very excited to see some news about PSVR2 and I can’t wait to buy them! but I am curious about a design change to the earlier prototype that had a backstrap to the controller and now I see in these newer designs that there is none. So it seems to me we won’t be able to open our hands completely like in the first prototype?.

Here is a link if no one hasn’t seen the video.

  • I hope you guys dabble in a Wii U style controller next to replace the PSVITA for a direct local remote play system 🙃

  • Thank God they’re getting rid of the move controllers, maybe now we will be able to make a full turn in our play space.

  • Thank you Sony! Psvr gave me, Resi7 Moss,Saint and sinner’s, Astro bot, beat saber etc can’t wait for Psvr 2❤️

  • Holy wow!!! These look amazing and exactly the design a next gen console needs!!!!

  • Lmao! I can’t even get a PS5. With all the scalping I’ll probably miss out on this generation completely.

  • looks like a hoot!!!!!
    hope its not 500 $$$$$

  • Nice controllers but would be nice one day to have controllers that are glove type to use your hands like holding a gun or a shooting a crossbow ect

  • I hope that PSVR titles work on the PSVR2. I never got around to PSVR, but I don’t want to miss out on the older titles.

  • This looks cool, but imagine the price. :[

  • I will ceremoniously “a la Office Space” destroy the last move controller I own. Thank you Sony for staying with VR and giving those of us that bought a PS5 a reason to love it even more. I was an early adopter and the move controllers ruined PSVR for me. I’m again excited to own PSVR because content is king and PSVR has amazing titles and will save me thousands since now I won’t have to buy a high-end pc :-). Please release the new headset and controllers soon!!!

  • These new optical shaped controllers looks FREAKING FANTASTIC!! I can’t wait to see what the actual headset looks like. If the controllers look this good, the headset got to look as equally impressive. Well done SIE dev teams!🤘👍👏👏💯❤

  • These new orbital shaped controllers looks FREAKING FANTASTIC!! I can’t wait to see what the actual headset looks like. If the controllers look this good, the headset got to look as equally impressive. Well done SIE dev teams!🤘👍👏👏💯❤
