The Oldest House awaits: Control Ultimate Edition comes to PlayStation Plus tomorrow

The award-winning supernatural adventure will have full DualSense support, 60fps gameplay, and ray tracing on PS5.

Hi all, I am excited to talk to you all about Control Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 5. The power of the PS5 opened up a lot of opportunities for us at Remedy, and we did our best to enhance the Control experience in ways which were not possible before.

Let’s start from literally the beginning. The initial loading of the game, where you see the logos and legal text, now takes approximately 4-seconds and from that it’s a short hop to get into the main menu. In addition to that, the load times in-game are a significant improvement compared to the PS4, so fast-traveling around the Oldest House is a lot more enjoyable.

You also have the choice between Performance and Graphics mode. In Performance mode, the game targets 60FPS performance, while in Graphics mode the action runs at 30FPS, but with ray tracing effects. In both modes the rendering resolution is set at 1440p, which is then upscaled to 4K. All this is running on Remedy’s own Northlight engine, which has undergone important upgrades since we first released Control back in 2019.

Ray tracing in Control Ultimate Edition brings improved image quality and realistic reflections to the environments in the Oldest House. These changes are most visible on non-transparent reflective surfaces across the game, as well as on transparent materials such as glass. This enables Control’s award-winning art direction to look and feel even more striking. We hope PS5 players will find new inspiration for taking shots with Control’s Photo Mode with all those gorgeous looking, ray-traced reflections.

It’s worth mentioning that the impressive visual features of ray tracing are achieved without sacrificing one of Control’s key features – advanced physics which enable a high level of environmental destruction. We encourage you to use the Launch ability to hurl around objects and hey, why not pile them up, too? It’s a great way to get to hard-to-reach areas and find secrets and loot.

Feeling it

After getting our hands on it and exploring its features, we’re especially excited about being able to take advantage of the DualSense.

You’ll definitely “feel” when the Pierce Service Weapon form is fully charged up through the vibrations of the right trigger. When using the SMG-like Spin, you can feel every bullet you spray through a very slight vibration. We especially like how subtle you can make some of these effects on the DualSense, which feels cooler than just aggressive rumble. The forms of the transforming Service Weapon feel even more distinct to use than before and give you a much more “hands-on” feel of what it’s like to be the Director of the Federal Bureau of Control.

Even the Director needs help sometimes

Control is set in the Federal Bureau of Control’s mysterious HQ, the Oldest House, which is, as we say, a shifting place. Despite the Bureau’s best attempts to map out the labyrinthine space, it can sometimes be a challenge to navigate, even with a transforming Service Weapon and a slew of supernatural abilities on Jesse’s side. This is partly by design, but the good news is that there’s help if you need it.

Control Ultimate Edition supports the PS5’s Game Help feature, so if you feel like you’re stuck on any part of Jesse’s journey to find her brother and control the Hiss threat, there are videos and textual hints available for all main missions. Some of the Help text and videos explicitly tell you what to do, and in some instances it’s more about giving hints as to what you should consider.

You access Help through Activity cards, which we think are awesome. We had a great time choosing the artwork for these. Activities are a great way to check your progress in a mission and give you an idea of how long they take. You can also see exactly how many steps away you are from unlocking a Trophy.

Control is available for PlayStation Plus members starting February 2. We welcome all new players entering the Oldest House for the first time!

  • I played thru the game when it was on Ps Now and really liked it. Looking forward to diving into the dlcs :)

    • Me too! It’s actually the game that pushed me to sign up for PS Now to begin with. ^-^

  • I see there’s still no free upgrade to the Ultimate Edition for those people who purchased the base game and Season Pass at launch. I’m not mad, I’m just very disappointed. And before anyone says “I’m sorry,” I will say “Do not be sorry. Be better.”

    • Just get ps+?

    • Wait, what am I missing? Ultimate edition is game plus dlcs? So what are they gonna upgrade to if they already own it?

    • You are missing that the Ultimate Edition is the only way to the PS5 free upgrade. So people who bought the game and the season pass don’t get the free upgrade…but being on PS+ now eliminated this problem for most people (just not for those that don’t have PS+)

  • Got the disk more than a year ago, played through all the non-DLC, and dearly loved this game. Looking forward to going back in and playing through again on the PS5 with the new options. Thank you so much for bringing it to Plus.

I’m sure you don’t need to be told how frustrating Remedy’s decisions and messaging have been around this edition of the game. I wish you’d announced it was coming to PS Plus months ago – it may have impacted your sales between then and now (especially the recent discount on the Ultimate Edition), but it would have created SO much good will compared to where you are today. I hope the quality improvements to the game outshine all the fumbled PR, and I am looking forward to another play through, but it’s so sad to see the self-inflicted damage you’ve done to yourselves over this.

  • This was announced as a Plus title three weeks after a slew of people, myself included, bought it on sale. PS’s return policy only extends two weeks. That was obviously intentional.

    • Well, I doubt that part was intentional but it is kinda bad to offer something on a sale just to put it in ps plus or Now a few weeks after. I would like to know how they decide the Ps Plus games.

    • Yeah I’m on the same boat and it sucks.
Looking into the bright side, I’m glad to reward a company that take the time to enhance its PS4 game with PS5 features and better performance, offering it as a free upgrade for everyone.
      Nice work Remedy!

  • Happy to play this again on my PS5😊.

  • I originally played this on another platform, does the Ultimate Edition offer a way to skip directly to the DLC instead of having to re-play the main story?

  • If only PS5 was stock I would download that, but sadly PS5 is sold out everywhere, I check all kinds of internet sites besides eBay all the time for ps5 stock but no luck yet,

I’ll download the PS4 version for time being, any benefits for PS4 Pro since that’s all I have currently?

    • You’ve got a game that’s a lot of fun to play on the PS4 Pro (how I played it originally), and you’ve got the DLC.

You won’t have the PS5 features of 60fpx (really awesome – huge boost for heavy combat sections) or the quality mode with ray tracing (beautiful, but save it for after you defeat everyone). But even without that, it’s a great game. I’m in the middle of other things, but just had to fire it up and play a bit yesterday, and even though I did all the non-DLC content, I still got chills all over again.

      Yes, it’s better on a PS5 – but it’s darn good on a PS4 Pro.

  • I like how games in the last millennium had real time reflections but now it’s constantly a “next gen feature”. 😁

  • Any chance of a Performance RT mode like Spiderman?

  • Yeah it`s Possible…Anybody can earn 500$+ daily… You can earn from16000$-32000$ a month or even more if you work as a full time job…It’s easy, just follow instructions on this page, CGui read it carefully from start to finish… It’s a flexible job but a good eaning opportunity
