First look: Demon’s Souls character creator and Photo Mode

Create a character that speaks to you, then capture their triumphs with an all-new Photo Mode.

Rebuilding Demon’s Souls from the ground up has been a daunting task, not only because of the original title’s grand scope, but also because we know how much this game is beloved by PlayStation fans. We love it, too, and that’s why we have gone to great lengths to recreate every feature of the original game on PS5, and that includes the character creator.

To create your character as you see fit is to build an emotional connection to the world of Demon’s Souls. You don’t play as a muscle-bound barbarian or a mighty god but an average person, vulnerable and familiar. Together you will face the same fears and overcome the same challenges. Watching your beloved character die is painful, but this spurs you to take revenge, reentering the battle. Each victory is ever sweeter because your creation lives on.

With this new character creator, you will be able to customize your appearance with up to 16 million permutations. We’ve added many more customization options than you’ll remember from the PS3 game, and also worked hard to ensure there is a satisfying variety possible for those who wish to tinker with every slider. Play as yourself, or who you want to be. Here are just a few of the many possible combinations.

The team is incredibly excited to see the amazing heroes (including the weird and wonderful) you will imagine. It’s important to remember: Demon’s Souls is a deep, rich single-player action-RPG with seamlessly integrated synchronous and asynchronous multiplayer elements.* Your custom character is someone you’ll be able to show off to other adventurers around the world, and we wanted the limits of that personal expression to go far beyond just what weapons or armor you’ve equipped. We hope having far more freedom to craft your avatar – combined with the vast improvement in detail and visual fidelity – will translate into memorable encounters, be they fleeting apparitions, cooperative allies, or competitive invaders. With the number of total synchronous online players in an instance increased to six, standing out will mean so much more.

Speaking of showing your character off, what better way to do so than with our newly added Photo Mode, which allows you to immortalize your triumphs and tragedies as well as celebrate and commiserate with your friends (and us!). As you might expect, Photo Mode contains all the features that you need to create memorable shots.

In Photo Mode, you can hide and show weapons and helmets, or even turn off the character entirely to capture that iconic scene. Or maybe you’d like to strike a pose or change expression for the ultimate selfie. Of course, you can change the camera settings, zoom in and out, add film grain, or blur out your friends (mean!).

By the way, all filters are also available outside of Photo Mode during ordinary gameplay, including one designed to tune brightness, contrast and color levels to closely resemble those of the original PS3 game, for those who may prefer that classic look.

So that’s just a quick glimpse at two great features available in Demon’s Souls. We can’t wait to see the great characters and images the community comes up with once the game launches on November 12. There’s much more to discover, but we’ll leave those for you to find.

*Internet connection and PlayStation Plus membership (sold separately) required for online multiplayer.

  • oh yes!
    a great addition

  • What madness is this!?

Being able to make any people looking people in a Souls game????

    Looks really fricking good!

  • I can’t wait to see what monsters the McElroys are able to brew using that creator.

  • Wowww they look like a Human being!!!

  • Looking absolutely amazing compared to the original one! Also love the fact you even mentioned: including the weird and wonderful. You clearly paid attention to how much people like to make their characters extremely weird in the Souls games, so thank you for not making into another “Perfectly pretty characters” only!

  • Amazing work and a wonderful addition that builds on a classic without altering it in the wrong fashion. One question pertains to how titles allow you to create a character and then at the end of the creation segment you are warned, “Are you sure” or something similar. I wonder if we will be able to tinker with facial features, hair, etc after creation, as in during the game when not in combat?

  • amazing work on the character creation ! i wonder if we will be still able to create weird faces like before ^^

  • Giving and Bluepoint, please discuss multiplayer before launch. I.e summon ranges, password matchmaking etc..

  • Gavin and Bluepoint, please discuss multiplayer before launch. I.e summon ranges, pass word matchmaking etc..

  • Just incredible…this is what a proper next-gen launch title should be like even with some features omitted (raytracing etc.) The main reason to get the PS5 at launch. Now if only u guys sorted out ur stock around the world so that we could actually get our hands on one -_-

    • Really?…a game that is basically recycled and looks just like PS4 games is your idea of “proper next-gen title”?…………………………………………..

  • Love this! Can’t wait to see what the RKG boys do with this new Finchy!

  • Looks awesome! Although I still want to be able to make a neon pink monstrosity like in OG souls…

  • Now my characters appearance can be just as unique as their backstory.

  • The Souls games have always had iffy character creation. This really shows how far it has came.

Will still make myself a blue pretty princess. ;P

  • So exciting! I can’t wait to try it out! 🙏🏻

  • The feature here is the fact that your character doesn’t look like a mutant that crawled out of a toxic dump. They actually made the character faces look normal and *shockingly* attractive for once.

  • I like how they act like they weren’t going to change really anything and try to keep the game the way it originally is and then they did this.

Hopefully the six Archstone is DLC.

  • I’ve loved souls-like games for a while but I was bothered that it took a herculean effort to make a character somewhat attractive and even then they never felt “right” seeing the reaffirmed my purchase of demon souls

  • Looks great! But I still don’t understand why we haven’t been shown the game’s UI. All the screenshots are lacking that detail.

  • I plan on using the photo mode as a pause button.

  • A bit last gen on the hair, but I guess it’s not a good place to blow a lot of frame drawing budget.

  • I have just one question regarding character creation: Can we adjust our weight? I.e: Can we make fat characters?

  • They say that you can hide helmets in photo mode, but will that option be available during gameplay? I don’t really use photo mode all that much in games, so it would really suck if I spent hours making the perfect character only for their face to remain hidden behind a helmet through the majority of the game…

  • Nice! I love in-game photography. Too bad I won’t be able to play this at launch. Maybe early 2021 when we have PS5 units here in Southeast Asia.

  • So very ready for this! I’m bursting with excitement. I am so happy for us gamers. We are truly in a gaming renaissance. Nothing but gratitude here

  • Looks super clean, I dig it.

  • Really Impressive

  • Will we have the option to toggle off helmets while actually playing the game?

  • Can not wait to play this game.

  • Looks just like a ps4 game to me. Maybe something il pick up when it’s 20 bucks but it’s not worth 70 or even close to it at all.

    • Nice to see someone with a brain in the comments and also that doesn’t need glasses. It’s not worth $20 too though.

  • Looks great and thank you for remaking this timeless classic.

Now go on and ensure the 6th archstone is incorporated into the sequel that’s in pre-production and let’s make dreams come true!

  • I can’t wait to take 40 hrs just to make a character

  • Make the graphics better, add photo mode, add gimmick crap like 4K and 60fps…call it a new game and have the brainless drool for it.Y’all sure know how to make easy money.

  • Oh wow. I havent seen anything like this.
U can make a human character!!! Take my money NOW

  • kan niet wachten op deze game,
domste is dat sommige weer een voorsprong hebben door de niet zo toffe launch in stukken door sony
