Introducing the world and characters of Final Fantasy XVI

How Mothercrystals, Dominants, and Eikons fit into the world of Valisthea.

Hello everyone! This is Naoki Yoshida, producer for Final Fantasy XVI. Everyone here in the development team is currently working together on a massive scale to bring you an all-new game worthy of the Final Fantasy name. Our next major announcement is planned to take place in 2021, but ahead of that, we revealed the Final Fantasy XVI teaser website today.

In the teaser website, we’ve included a lot of new information and artwork to introduce you to the world in which the story takes place, and also some of the main characters of the game. So, let me briefly introduce the content of the site!

A Land Blessed in the Light of the Mothercrystals

Final Fantasy XVI’s adventure takes place in a land called Valisthea, which is studded with colossal mountains of glittering crystal called Mothercrystals. These Mothercrystals have towered over the realms around them for generations, blessing them with aether. This blessing of the Mothercrystals has allowed these realms to thrive, and their people to live in comfort.

Countless wars have been fought over the Mothercrystals all around the land, leading to the rise of nations such as the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, the Kingdom of Waloed, the Dhalmekian Republic, and the Iron Kingdom, each with their own culture and ideology. Ongoing skirmishes have forged an uneasy peace between these nations, but with the emergence of the ruinous Blight, that fragile peace is starting to deteriorate.

Three characters swept up by the winds of fate

There was a lot of speculation, but yes, the young knight and the tattooed man in the “Awakening” trailer are one and the same. His name is Clive Rosfield, and he’s the main protagonist of this game. The firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria, Clive is a Shield who protects his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix. Joshua bestowed the Blessing of the Phoenix upon him, giving Clive the ability to wield a part of the Eikon’s fire. However, as the story unfolds, he is swept up into a great tragedy.

Joshua Rosfield is Clive’s younger brother and also the Dominant of the Phoenix—Eikon of Fire. Dominants are special beings who have the power of an Eikon residing within them. As a Dominant, Joshua transforms into the Phoenix and fights to protect his nation. Even though he was born into royalty, Joshua treats everyone with kindness, but he does have his childlike side, too, with a particular dislike of carrots.

The two brothers find a confidant in Jill Warrick, who was raised alongside them. At an early age, Jill was taken from her homeland in the Northern Territories—a nation that swore loyalty to the Grand Duchy of Rosaria—to become a ward of the duchy, securing peace between the two realms. She spends her childhood years with Clive and Joshua as a member of the Rosfield household.

The Eikons and the Dominants that threaten the world

For those familiar with the Final Fantasy series, you may know Eikons as “Summons”, and they are without a doubt the most destructive and lethal creatures in Valisthea. Wielding powers that can level nations, Eikons reside within special beings called Dominants. How Dominants are treated depends on the realm—in some they are revered as royalty, while in others they are sent to the frontlines as weapons of war.

In the “Awakening” trailer, Eikons such as the Phoenix, Titan, Shiva, and Ifrit make an appearance. As for questions about how many other Eikons there are in Valisthea, who they are, and what will happen when they come to blows, well…you’ll just have to wait for a future reveal to find out!

I hope you get a chance to visit the newly launched Final Fantasy XVI teaser website, as you’ll find plenty more information and artwork there. Our next big announcement will be in 2021, so please look forward to it, and please keep looking forward to Final Fantasy XVI!

  • Only negative I’m seeing so far is it looking like there’s only 1playable character. After last game being a bromance, it would be nice for us to be able to play with atleast a female as well

    • I hope there’s at least 3 characters and we can switch & play it like ff7 remake.

    • Square only did one playable character for spin-off like Crisis Core or Dirge of Cerberus, while every main FF title always had multiple playable characters.

So there’s no need to speculate or worried. I’m sure FF XVI will have multiple playable characters.

    • That’s how I felt with Final Fantasy X-2. It was upsetting that the entire team was female-only.

Other series can be waifu simulators, not Final Fantasy.

    • Don’t bring your ideology here. If you want females go play TLOU2. This franchise is fine without the intromission of politics.

    • Can’t wait to see more of this! After playing FF15 and the FF7 Remake, I’m all but excited for more Final Fantasy!

    • Ah yes the two genders, “Male” and “political”.

I would also like to see more playable women characters! This game looks fantastic. Can’t wait to see more!

  • I’m getting final fantasy tactics vibe with this game, can’t wait :)

  • This has now become my most wanted game for PS5 !!!

  • I’m so hyped fir this game & cannot wait to see/hear more of it 👏🏽🙌🏽

  • Amazing artworks and characters design. Is it by Akihiko Yoshida?

  • His name is Clive?

  • I’m tired of crystals… And I find relying in this a big mistake…

    • Crystal is one of the staple for FF since the first game, either as a central plot or just reference. The same as just like Warriors of Light, Chocobo, Cid, or Moogle.

An FF game will feel less FF without Crystal.

  • So this game is kinda like Naruto.

  • I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that Jill girl is Shiva’s “dominant,” given her color scheme ‘n’ all.

  • Josh and Clive names sound like two hillbillies sons of incest lol seriously and by the way get rid of the stupid thing with carrots hat information nobody cares about a character in a game seriously

  • The more I hear the more excited I become for this game.

Its giving me strong Game of Thrones/ Naruto vibes in all the best ways :)

  • Can’t wait!!!

  • Really excited to play this on PC a year later

  • This game looks and sounds great. The plot sounds good and interesting. Glad it’s a return to high fantasy like the old games. Final Fantasy has always been my favorite RPG game and franchise. I’m hella hype for FF16!!

  • Looks really fun very well expected for a final fantasy game! But I feel like we need more playable characters just like the previous games

  • So hyped. Tbh this was the selling point for me to get a day 1 PS5, the minute I saw the trailer my mind was set. Hope this game is as close as they have teased us (late 2021 or 2022)

  • I see they are going for a very international/global feel with this game. Nothing about the game so far looks anime or particularly Japanese or Eastern in design.

  • I am beyond hyped for this. Yoshi-P helped create a game i’ve absolutely loved for seven years. The few details that have been revealed about XVI already have me more excited than i’ve been for the last few games. I can’t wait to see what this one is like. I’m expecting it to be at the very top of my list of favorite FF games.

  • This is looking superb. It is looking like another fantastic entry in the series. I can’t wait!!!

  • Mann….What happens to the Eikon if the Dominant dies? Are there going to be any Eikons that don’t have a Dominant? All the other summons (Ifrit, Titan, Shiva, etc.) — do they have Dominants too? Makes me wonder if there will be any rogue Eikons/Dominants in the game. Hyped!

  • Love to go back to medieval theme in FF.
    Not a fan of XV.

  • Please don’t let this be another single character driven game. I love the Final Fantasies for their ensemble casts, and varied party strategy. While I enjoyed FFXV, Noctis was a one trick pony.

At least 3 playable characters is a minimum for me. FFVII Remake handled party combat wonderfully.

  • 13 and 15 were horrible games. SE is going to have to prove to me they can get their stuff together before I buy this. That includes NO DLC to actually comprehend the story.

  • I’m really looking forward to this so please don’t do what was done in FFXV. A full game without plot holes to make us but more content to fill in the gaps would make me extremely happy.

    • ff15 was horrendous. Not at all what I expected from a Final Fantasy game. While I do acknowledge they are trying to appeal to newer generations of fans they seem to have forgotten that their old fans are still here, sadly watching from the sidelines. I hope they put more effort into the story line, character development and backstories and not focus only graphics. Don’t over complicate it, and go back to their roots.

    • Well I mean they did try to develop the characters in FF XV, with the silly anime series and movies.

The problem was all the characters were boring, forgettable and looked like 4 random unused characters from the worlds most generic anime.

  • Why does young Clive have to have such a terrible hairstyle? It’s like the hairstyle an old lady would have. Maybe you could give us choice of hairstyles at the start of the game?

Love that city concept artwork! Thanks for the update!

  • Seems really nice, I’m excited to find out more! Looking forward to playing this.

  • I’m so excited for this! Looks freaking phenomenal!

  • I hope they go back to their roots. The summon system in FF15 was actually awful and not really that much better in FF7Remake. The original FF7 summon system was great, along with FFX, I really loved that system, particularly how I got to have some control over the summons. Seems like they focused too much on trying to create fancy environments, graphics and systems that they forgot the story which is the heart of the gameplay.

  • Looks like a mix of 12 and Online. Meh. 😐

  • I’m very excited about this! Can’t wait to play!

  • I am excited for this one. I liked 15 but I prefer Final Fantasy games that are less futuristic and this seems to look that way so far.

  • Incredible artwork

  • I’m pretty excited on this I hope they learned from their mistake in FF15 that we don’t want a bunch of dlc content, and would prefer they put all effort in to making a full complete game on launch, I’m curious to see who future teammates and how the story arc will go. Nice work!

  • Kind of hoping that they’ll change direction and make it an actual RPG…

You know, as it’s an RPG series, and not a lame action game with easymode combat…

Also add some playable characters that aren’t just generics (or if they HAVE to, just add a character maker like FF XIV for the main whatever…)

  • I am looking forward to play this game in 2030 :)

  • Looks epic. Cant wait to see how it turns out.

  • mooie game en zal zeker hem spelen.

enkel wacht ik op een singelplayer ff game waar ge een personage maakt en waar ge in de stijl van een skyrim u personage ontwikkeld
