Introducing the new PlayStation App, redesigned to enhance your gaming experiences on PS4 and PS5

Updated PS App includes new UI layout, integrated messages feature, support for voice chat, and more.

Today we’re introducing new ways to amplify your connections with friends and the games you love to play even when you’re away from your console. We’re pleased to unveil the updated PlayStation App, reimagined to enhance your gaming experiences on both PS4 and PS5.

Starting later today, the PS App will begin to roll out globally through updates on iOS (12.2 or later) and Android (6.0 or later) mobile devices. The PS App introduces fresh features such as voice chat, native PS Store integration, and a smoother experience delivered in an all-new design.

Please note: the Android version of the update is a phased release and may take one week until the update is reflected on your mobile device.

Here’s a list of the key features for PS App:

  • Updated user interface – The first thing you’ll notice is the sleek new user interface of the redesigned PS App. The new home screen lets you quickly see what your friends are playing and access details about your recently played games, including your Trophy List.
  • Messages integration – For a unified experience, the PS Messages app feature will now be integrated in the updated PS App so you can seamlessly message your friends all in one place. As part of this integration, PS Messages will no longer be available as a standalone app. Your existing messages and threads in PS Messages will be carried over to the updated PS App.
  • Voice Chat and Party Groups – You can now create party groups from PS App, and voice chat with up to 15 other friends though your mobile phone. Also, a note to fans: the PlayStation team is looking into your feedback around the Parties changes introduced in the PS4 system software update 8.00. There are no updates to share today, but thanks for speaking up about your concerns – we’re listening and evaluating.
  • Natively integrated PlayStation Store and remote downloads – The new native PS Store experience enables fast and smooth shopping and browsing, with the ability to remotely download games and add-ons directly to your PS4 and PS5.
  • New features for PS5 – When PS5 arrives, you’ll be able to remotely launch games, manage storage on your console if you run out of space while downloading a game, and quickly sign in to PS5 straight from the PS App.
  • All the latest PlayStation news – The Explore tab surfaces Official News from game developers and PS Blog content to help you stay up to date with the world of PlayStation.

If you don’t have the PS App yet, you’ll need an account for PlayStation Network to access the updated app. If you don’t have an account yet, please visit this link and follow the steps to sign up.

The new PS App can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.

  • What time is the update? I can see it yet

  • I hope there is party news soon. Still not a fan of the 8.0 party changes, and still have serious concerns about the voice chat recording. I understand how the system works, however I think there is potential for lots of abuse giving users the ability to freely record the last 5 minutes of a conversation and then listen to it. People can export it and use it for other purposes.

    • Tbh ever since the release of the PS4. Anyone with a external capture device like a elgato could record party chat and extract the video and audio to there pc.

I know this because a old friend of mine use to live stream to YouTube using a elgato device and our privet party chat was broadcasted on his live stream without the rest of the party knowing.

    • Choose your friends wisely then you won’t have a problem.. ammo is only given by the beholder of the words.

    • Well “TBH” it has been going on since the early PC days and since PS2 and XBOX. People are now only freaking out because Sony made them aware rather then bury their heads in the sand.

You might not fully know how the recording system works based on your comment. From what I have read directly from Playstation is that user’s do not have the ability to record the party chat audio and store it, listen to it, or export it. It will work similarly to how you report an application when it crashes. As soon as an app crashes an error message pops up and asks you if you want to report it directly to Playstation. If you report it to Playstation you can leave a message and it attached a video of the crash automatically. Then you send that to Playstation. Thats it. Thats how the party chat recording will work. If someone says something to you that is against the Playstation rules then you can optionally report that player. It will bring up a screen where you will select a few options and it will automatically attach the past 5 minutes of chat into the report. Then when you send it to Playstation, thats all that happens. You can’t save the recording or export it anywhere else. It is sent directly to Playstation and thats all. So the PS4 is always recording the last 5 minutes of audio and then continuously deleting it as time goes on just like the PS4 continuously records the last 15 minutes of gameplay. If you don’t choose to record the gameplay then it vanishes, similar to how the party chat system will work. The major difference being that the gameplay can be saved or exported to social media/other devices where as the specific party chat audio recording can only be sent directly to Playstation similarly to how reporting an app crashing works. That video of the app crashing is not seen, heard, or manipulated in any way by you. Only Playstation can see it. Let me know if this makes sense. This is what Playstation has described mostly and I some examples to how I assume it will work.

    • @ocelot07 Yes that’s true, but having it built-in makes it easier and more accessible. When people use external devices, I think they need to be responsible and inform everyone in the group. I always ask when I join parties if anyone is streaming and using external. In-game chats, I usually assume people are streaming so my focus is on the game comms.

@AstroHosie People can change and betray, so choosing wisely doesn’t guarantee any outcome. It’s not even about saying stuff in violation of ToS, just personal and private convos that can be captured.

      @Jisatsu_Kiddo true

@icefairyshane I fully understand how it works. Your summary is spot on, it records on a rolling basis the last five min locally on your console but you get to choose 20 seconds of that five minutes and the 10 seconds before and after the 20 you selected are also sent to Sony for a total of 40 seconds. While they didn’t clearly state, it seems reasonable that you will be able to listen to those five minutes to select the 20 second portion you wish to submit to the mods. By exporting I mean people can easily playback the last five min and use a phone to capture some audio for later use. Imo the system should just auto capture the last 40s and as soon as something happens, you should initiate the report process. 5 min seems too generous.

    • What are ppl afraid of?

It holds u accountable. Don’t be racist or threatening, don’t cheat, don’t be irresponsible. I’m happy that it could scare ppl into acting civil.

It baffles me as to what y’all have to hide. Why would u divulge pertinent info anyway? I’m happy it might weed out the problems.

    • Honestly, from what I understand the audio recording is only available when you report someone. So, yes someone can listen the most recent 5 minutes, but only by actively choosing to report you. Like others mentioned, there are other options to record your voice chat that have been long available before this update. So if you’re really concerned about someone listening back to 5 minutes of your conversation, you should reconsider who your friends are or with who you you’ll going a party.

    • I can’t wait for the app

  • It’s very exciting to see native PlayStation Store support on mobile at last! Remote game launch and storage management on PS5 is fun too.

  • Happy to see the messages merged in the app, it looks good, can’t wait to try it.

Interesting features, integrated store is a nice addition, as well as voice chat support!! :)

  • So where is the app? Why say it’s available now when it’s not. Playstation always dropping the ball.

  • What time is the update my guy

    • “Starting later today, the PS App will begin to roll out globally through updates on iOS (12.2 or later) and Android (6.0 or later) mobile devices.” Second Paragraph. They can’t say specifically because of the way the Apple and Android stores rollout new updates.

    • I wish I knew
      But no luck

  • I’m surprised Sony used an iPhone for the video rather than showing of their Xperia line. That’s how you create brand awareness, show off your stuff!
I’m loving the new look of the app, it looks functional, clean and intuitive.

  • Will we able to manage our storage remotely whenever we want? Ie not only when run out of space

  • Nice! you can use party chat on your phone, Now all you need to do is make it so you can use Party chat on pc! But overall a great upgrade and a step into the right direction.

  • So when it’s gonna be available?
And are you gonna integrate ability to watch screenshots/videos and work with that media stuff? thanks

    • Rolling out today over a period of time.

And you know, although it doesn’t seem media control or sharing is there right yet, the fact that you can manage your PS5 storage from the app very well may be a doorway into this feature.

If you can manage game installs, why not screenshots and videos? Hope to see that one day, and it’s nice to see the infrastructure has been setup to do this.

    • Since Xbox has that, I’m sure Sony will add it soon enough

  • VERY, VERY NICE.

  • It’s not often I get this excited about a mobile app, but this is FANTASTIC. Kudos to the team members who worked on this. As someone who has been using the PS App since it launched along with the PS4, there are some things to be really happy about in this.

While it isn’t available for me to download yet, all of this seems great. It’s fantastic to see Messages rolled back in (admittedly, I always thought it was a bit silly when it got spun-out in the 2nd gen of the app). Not only that though: adding Voice Chat integration, PS5 storage management and game launching, and an integrated PS Store are the type of quality of life things that I think really help a lot. These extra features I was not expecting but they are a very welcome surprise.

All in all: this is fantastic work and I am excited to check it out. The app team definitely deserves to be recognized here. Cheers!

  • Please tell me we can send screenshots and recordings to our phone

  • Make app available in BELARUS. It’s not fare! I’m your customer too after all…

  • Looks really slick, hats off to the design team for creating something so gorgeous.

Excited to try it out later!

  • I love the new design/features! Thank you, to the teams that worked on this!

I do have a question, though. What about accessing our screenshots & recording via the mobile app? I’ve had Xbox friends be able to just open their phone and show me gameplay.

  • It’s great that the everything is now one app. No more having multiple apps for each thing which was a pain.
Also, an integrated PSStore is so welcome!! Opening up the store it a browser within the app would be horrible, so I’m really happy about the direction things are going.

  • Looks great, looking forward to try it.

  • Alright, it is not every day I get this excited for an app, gaming-related or not. This looks very nice.

  • Bring back the wishlist, please!

  • Will wishlists be coming back after the update? I use these for Nintendo, Steam, and PlayStation, and I was sad to hear it was being removed.

    • There is a notification in the app, where you can check if you want updates about wishlist or not, so I’m guessing it will come back in some way or another sooner or later.

  • There’s any news about having access of the content of create/share button? It would be amazing be able to save my game photos and videos through the new app to my phone!
Loved the new feature of the voice party chat.

  • This looks awesome. Like it.

  • Really hoping you will be able to access clips and videos on your PlayStation from the app. 🤞Honestly the one and only thing I think Xbox has over PlayStation.

  • I don’t know who approved of this design, but while having only pictures looks nice at first, it makes for a horrible user experience. There’s so much room for improvement without ruining the design, so please do so.

  • Thank god, just please bring back the old party chat system, that was good how it was…

  • Still not available…

  • So is the current “PS app” being renamed to this new “PlayStation app”? Or is this a totally new app and the existing one will cease?

  • Looks good. It’d be nice to have the ability to view and share saved videos and screenshots. Like how the Xbox can.

  • Question is – “Natively integrated PlayStation Store and remote downloads” – is this limited to only 1,00 games?

The new, terrible, web store limits your purchase history to only 1,000 games – I have just under 2,000 PS4 games so I can’t actually access and download almost half of my game collection on the site. I called support and they refused to even write it up and send it to the people who need to know this.

Sure, most people won’t hit 1k games, but this list includes PS Now and PS Plus games you’ve redeemed (over 400 there for me on PS4), even if you stop the services or they’re removed from PSNow.

We need the limit of 1,000 games to be removed from the purchase history. Also, the PH doesn’t list any DLC, so you can’t remotely download ANY DLC. So, if you bought the new DOOM Eternal DLC whilst out and you want to download it – you can’t. Why? Because it doesn’t appear in the PH list so you can’t hit the download button.

So, we need the PH 1k limit lifting so it shows all the games we own, and we need another list that shows all the DLC which we’ve also bought. Otherwise, this app is lacking functionality and actually hiding content you own whilst stopping you from using it for it’s intended purpose!

And yes, I did email a detailed message to Sony PR and support but I don’t think they’ll reply as they seem to ignore people who address actual concerns and issues with their services.

  • The app looks really nice, I hope it’s fast unlike the previous version.

  • The new design is incredibly and much clean similar to PS5 UI so far

  • Where is the update? Which time will it come?

  • I cant see it in appstore and my ps app is not updated, when it will be available.
I live in Sweden if it make any difference in our country here.

  • Still waiting on that update lol

  • This new version of the app dose it just update the present one or is it a all new thing if so where oh where is it

  • I’m most excited about the store integration! That’s going to be great!

  • Would it work with the iOS 14.2?

  • I can’t update my app
    Please work it out

  • Finally party on mobile! But does it support SharePlay though?

  • Globally?? Three years ago I could use it in my country then it suddenly vanished from
My phone and the App Store

  • So will I be able to use this app on pc? Or will you guys be adding discord soon, because I don’t see how cross platform gaming is going to work if we can’t communicate with each other. The regular in game communication quality is terrible already so there needs to be a better option for everyone to connect.

  • Looks good, I’d love to see more Share functionality with it though. The new Xbox app automatically notices when you take screenshots on the console and offers share options on the app. PS had the share button first but has been pretty lax with actual share functionality, especially since Facebook intergration was removed.

  • Please enable this app in Lithuania. Please

  • > manage storage on your console

will this let us interact with the gallery? (screenshots/dvr clips)
being able to use the app to move captures from the internal ssd to an external usb drive, or NAS connected storage would be a HUGE feature.

  • Im glad Facebook isnt associated with PlayStation as much currently and in future, I do love the new layouts and features and integrations in the updated app and information about it, cannot wait to use it right away! 😊

  • Let’s be honest can we please get a feature were we can save pictures and videos directly to our phones or Apple/android devices. It’s the one thing I have been wanting for a while now.

  • Looks awesome! Really excited to try it out!
