New media experience and top entertainment streaming apps coming to PS5

Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify and more will be on PS5 at launch.

Update: All entertainment apps announced today are scheduled to hit the PS5 console on Day 1.

Hi, everybody! We know that for many of you, your PlayStation console doesn’t get shut off when you’re done playing games. Entertainment like movies, TV shows, music, and gaming livestreams only add to the PlayStation experience. As we continue on our road to PS5 launch, we’re pleased to announce some of the entertainment apps* scheduled to hit the PS5 console on day one, with more apps to come in the future.

Apple TV

  • Enjoy Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, new and popular movies, and personalized, curated recommendations on the Apple TV app. That means users can enjoy Apple Originals like Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show through Apple TV+, subscribe to premium channels, and buy or rent movies and TV shows and access past purchases from Apple. The Apple TV app will also be available on PS4.

Disney+

  • The dedicated home for movies, shows, shorts, and originals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. From original series like The Mandalorian, to fan favorites like The Simpsons, you can watch your favorite stories right from your PS5 console.

Netflix

  • Catch up on top entertainment hits such as Stranger Things, The Haunting of Bly Manor and more. With thousands of TV episodes and movies in Netflix’s library, there’s plenty to choose from.

Spotify

  • Listen while you play. Just as with PS4, users can play their favorite songs as background music in-game with Spotify. You can choose from more than 60 million songs while you’re battling bosses or roaming through an open-world adventure.

Twitch

  • With a deeply integrated Twitch experience on PS5, you can now watch or livestream your favorite gameplay and chat live about the best moments with fellow gamers throughout the many diverse and dynamic communities.

YouTube

  • Also integrated with PS5, you can broadcast and share your epic gameplay moments directly to your YouTube channel, or sit back and watch new and trending content shared from around the world.

Additional streaming apps* coming to PS5 include Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more.

As we showed in our tour of the PS5 User Experience, there will be a dedicated space exclusively for media entertainment. It’s located right next to the Game home screen, so you can quickly switch between Game or Media content.

Within the Media space, you’ll no longer need to download entertainment apps through PS Store — it’s all in the Media space. Creating dedicated Game and Media spaces for the PS5 user experience will make it fast and easy to switch between gaming and entertainment content whenever you want. The PS5 console also features a new Control Center that makes controlling your music easier than ever before, so you can quickly switch between channels, skip, and pause your music.

At the launch of the PS5 console, there will be a new Media Remote to conveniently navigate and control the entertainment experience on PS5. Users can power on the PS5 console and quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse controls. The remote also lets users adjust volume and power settings on compatible TVs, and also features dedicated launch buttons for the following entertainment apps*, Disney+ Netflix, Spotify and YouTube.

We hope you’ll enjoy this experience once PS5 launches in November.

*Internet and account for PlayStation Network required. Streaming services may require paid subscription and are not available in all countries.

  • Once my PS5 does have Amazon Prime, HBO Max & Funimation I can finally get rid of my XBox One S. I don’t use it for games. It was the cheapest 4k Blu Ray players you can buy when the PS4 Pro launched without a 4k drive.

  • Will the main media apps support 4K HDR finally?

Also as most have said, we still would prefer programmable buttons as an option too, please.

  • Is the PS5 support Dolby vision?
The movies in Apple tv and Netflix have movies in Dolby Vision which is the HDR format i like to watch.

  • Third party people will release a real remote in short order. I didn’t bother reading up on it after seeing those ridiculous buttons tagged for companies that I don’t even use – except youtube but I won’t use that on the ps5 anyway as I have a tablet, phone, laptop and a real computer – but maybe my harmony remote will work with it…??

I wonder how much Sony made them pay to get panned by a lot of people who think it is worthless to have branded buttons….

Oh well, like I said, third party will release a real remote.

Never pre-ordered ps5 yet anyway because of the small hard drive. Seems like it will be a hassle to use an external drive that I have now because something about manually copying games to the internal drive to play them…really…?? Shouldn’t that be automatic when you select a game to play? *sigh* next-gen is never really next-gen.

  • Can the ps5 game stream on Facebook

  • I know the answer to this probably, but will there be space on the UK storefront from NowTV like Netflix and Amazon Prime?
Just curious, I’ll probably still use my TVs app for Amazon Prime to be honest anyway.

  • What about the streaming platforms from Amazon (Prime & Music)? I’d love to listen to my playlist on Amazon music whilst playing.

  • Sounds fine and dandy, but how will they handle Atmos titles, that function on Netflix and AmazonPrime when accessed on Xbox?? Will it somehow convert the sound to their new proprietary sounds format?

  • Any news about youtube music? Also I hope the controls in apps like YouTube are bearable now cuz they weren’t so nice in ps4

  • Hello,
There is no word about your own media access.
Are we going to have HD and 4k movies to buy and download options on PS5 from PSN store?
Not even PS4 has that option (only streaming) and purchases and downloads were removed from PS3 consoles long time ago.
I still want to buy and download movies for my old PS3, PS Vita or PS TV consoles but I can’t.
It’s jarring that you allow movie downloads on android devices like phones and tablets with small screens but you don’t allow it on you flagship home consoles!?!

  • Please God will we be able to control our own this time? Ps4 is horrible. Apps I can’t even use in the country I live in and can’t remove them from the list (and they’re forced to the front by ps). Let us delete/hide apps please!

  • What, no Vue button?

  • I would love twitter app for PS4 &/or PS5, I love YouTube app alot, PS5 will be amazing!

  • Looks good to me, all those apps. The future of gaming is bright.
I hope that there will be a PS5 Pro

  • Will funimation and crunchyroll come back?

  • I know this isn’t about the topic of this post, but are u guys gonna stop selling ps3 products? I have a ps4 but I still buy stuff for ps3, like sequels. For example, I was gonna buy the Ratchet And Clank trilogy, but that’s only available for ps3. Is it true that ps3 and psVita content will stop? Sorry for bothering you, just wanna know

  • So ya get a free apple tv? Take my money.

  • Apple please work with Sony so we can listen to Apple Music.

  • I’m subscribed to… ALL THOSE THINGS!

Never thought of using my game console as my video device until now. Was thinking of picking up an Apple TV whenever the next one comes but now maybe I don’t have to.

  • Will the PS5 support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for movies streamed from Netflix and other ott platforms?

    Please reply…

  • Apple music would have been nice too.

  • Can we please get Apple Music support? I don’t have Spotify premium and hate that it’s the only option for music streaming in PlayStation.

  • It would be nice if the blog interacted with the commenters questions. Otherwise, what is the point?

  • All it’s left is a good Web browser and proper VR support for your media.
Don’t make just that big virtual cinema like in PS4.

  • Can we see Discord coming to PS5 to support chatting with players from pc or Xbox?

  • I don’t want Disney Plus. Why are those specific buttons force selling other services?

  • What’s the possibilities of getting new apps like Spectrum TV app.

  • I think that the remotes should perhaps come with a set of decals, with logos on them for other services that people may want, like Apple Music and vudu and amazon prime or crunchyroll too! Come on Sony, don’t sacrifice that dignity for product placement…

  • After Cuties, y’all need to take Netflix off your remote and replace it with something else. Hulu maybe?

  • What about iPlayer, 4oD, even (gasp) ITV hub? Thanks.

    • BBC iPlayer and All4 are likely since both have been on PS4 for years. ITV decided not to release a PS4 app so who knows if they’ll do an ITV Hub app for PS5.

  • Also as others have commented, I would like to be able to customise the list and remove ones I don’t use.

  • Would this work with ps4

  • Fix the damn network

  • I am happy that YouTube is a button, more TV remotes should have that since it’s not subscription-based. Not happy about Disney+ button, would probably be better served space for a Hulu button. Or how about just programmable buttons for whichever services you DO use? I was always really annoyed how on PS4, it would show all the apps I don’t use or even don’t have installed before it even shows the ones I DO!

  • YouTube will be amazing with this official remote!

  • I know this is probably a given but will all be apps support 4k HDR? Including vudu if it eventually does make it away over. I know the vudu app on android tv as well as ps4 pro is maxed out at 1080p.

  • Can you stream to ipsd or fire hd games

  • The unboxing videos are out now. I see a “Dolby Audio” logo on the bottom of the box, but it does not specify Atmos. Also a DTS MA logo on the box, which is good to see. Nothing about Dolby Vision.

    • after looking closer at the unboxing videos, there are no Dolby logo’s on the bottom of the unit.

    • after looking at a different unboxing, i do see some fine print on the bottom of the unit that mentions “Dolby Audio”. It sure would be nice if Sony could just come out and SAY IT already! What types HDR are supported and is Dolby Atmos supported? How hard can it be?

  • Disney + will be included on the remote and on the ps5. My question to the team is will I be able to access it. Disney + is not available in South Africa, so if I click the button for Disney +, would it just give me an error message stating that it is not available in my country?

  • What about social media apps

  • You one PlayStation 5 for me please so cool

  • Spotify and Disney + should have been removed form the remote no one wants those on the media remote if anything programmable buttons would have been the way to go giving everyone the to add their favorite app’s. But Disney + come one guys!!!!

  • No dedicated Apple TV button?

  • On topic of discord Nope there will be nothing that Sony can not monitor moderate and control over what is said to each other. They need to be in control of the reporting system. So no outside chat or message programs

  • is this backwards compatible with the PS4 cuz i wont be buying the PS5:(
i just bought myself a PS4 a year before the PS5 so dont ask

  • Does anyone know if there is any limitations to watch movies via USB hard drives? My 8TB hard drive wouldn’t work with the PS4.

  • Do u have Hulu if not I think you should add it

  • Why can’t the CW app be a avaliable on PlayStation? It’s on the Xbox.

  • LOL @ people telling Sony to get 3rd party apps to work.
