UPDATE: Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.  

Our latest system software update for PlayStation 4, version 8.00, is launching today globally. This update includes changes to the existing Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls and more.

Here are some of the key features in this update:

Updates to Party and Messages

Following this update, Party and Messages will be more tightly linked together and you will see changes to the UI. Both apps will now use the same ‘Groups’ of players for Party voice chats and message exchanges, instead of having different groups setup across the two apps. So now you can start a Party chat or send a message to the group you’ve previously chatted with across PS4, as well as PS5 when it launches.

New Avatars

We’re expanding the collection of pre-set avatars for players to showcase on their Profile. An array of new avatars from your favorite games will be available, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and many more.

Mute all Mics from Quick Menu

We’ve added an option to “Mute all Microphones” in the Quick Menu, so you can easily mute your mics while gaming.

Simplified and more flexible Parental Controls

Under Parental Controls, we’re combining the ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’-  to cover both areas of communication and UGC sharing. This offers a simpler setting that’s easier for parents to understand and apply to their children.

 In addition, children can send a request to their parents to use communications features in specific games. When a child sends this request, the parent will receive an email notification and can choose to make an exception for that game and allow the child to use its communications and UGC features. This will provide more flexibility to both parents and children.

Enhanced 2-Step Verification

The 2-Step Verification (2SV) feature on PS4 will be enhanced to support third party authenticator apps as an option during the activation flow and 2SV sign-in across PS4, mobile and web.

Removal of Event Creation and Private Community Creation

After 8.00, you will no longer be able to create Events or access existing Events created by other users.

We’re also removing the ability to create private Communities under the Community app on PS4. If you already have existing private Communities, you can continue to access them.

Updates to Remote Play App on Mobile and PC

At the same time as 8.00, the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile (iOS/Android), Windows PC and Mac, will change its name to PS Remote Play, and the option to connect to PS5 will be added. You’ll need to sign in to PSN from your PS5 to be able to access the feature, so sit tight until PS5 launches this November!

 As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended to download the update.

    The party system in my opinion is now the worst party system, even more worse than the ps3, you cant just randomly join up with friends, you need to add them to a group to go into a voice chat, its redundant, Sony please fix this issue, everything else in the update was a cool addition but you messed up the parties

    Well, so far, it’s so buggy, and this idea of going through messages as way of a chat party is completely bogus, and another thing, who in the hell is gonna report a conversation their having with their friends, cause idk about other people but I dont chat with people that are not on my friends list

    So big brother rears its ugly head, your going to moderate me well hope you like strong language and then some. Secondly you broke chat it was fine before you “fixed it”. Probably going to switch to x box or pc next counsel because of you bad desisition which is to bad twenty years of ps down the drain.
    In the end it’s your need for control and to copy a trend i.e. discord and several other poor choices that will ultimately be your undoing in this counsel war.

    I think PlayStation look a vast step backwards with deleting the private party chats. When you’re playing a team based game, you don’t want people coming in and disrupting you. Very disappointing Sony!!!

    Why Sony thought it was a good idea to change the parties is a question I’ll never know the answer to. The parties were great the way they were before this update rolled around. Creating a party now is a absolute chore, you have to: Create a chat, invite the ENTIRE chat to the party and you’ll probably have to wait a minute or two for them to join, because accepting invitations is also a absolute chore too. (At least from my experience) Remember when I said you have to invite a entire chat to a party? Yeah, that means no more private parties.

    Also, I thought I’d bring this up, Sony is also actively monitoring the conversations in your parties. That means no more privacy. Don’t you think it would be a bit illegal for Sony to be doing this? They could be monitoring children for all I could know, (Not saying that children should be allowed on playstation btw).

    I don’t care if this is considered being a jerk in sony’s eyes. The only thing in trying to do here is give constructive criticism. I will leave my argument off with this; sony, Just listen to your customers alright? And get your act together.

    This is a HORRIBLE update tbh. Everything is freezing and is super super slow. And now I can’t make a party with only me in it and everything is being recorded in my party. This is not cool and is invading our privacy. Everybody start a petition for Sony to remove the recorded party feature.

    This is a very unfortunate update. I used to be able to pop online, see which of my friends are in parties, and join up on them on the fly. Now I can’t see what anyone is doing unless they explicitly invite me, and it’s not right that I have to create a MASSIVE group just to make sure all my friends can see my party. I believe this is a serious misstep.

    Being in quarantine, it has really helped to know that all my friends are just one click away from me chatting with them. Now I’ve never felt more alone, my party tab is completely empty and I feel so isolated from all my friends.

    I would like to add my observations to the feedback on the new update. My friends list is no longer working. I am NOT happy that voice recordings are now happening, this does not solve any problems, rather it gives people yet another way to trick Sony into thinking people did something wrong when they didn’t. I believe it will be used by players to hurt people more than to protect themselves. The changes to parties comms are not an improvement. The party system worked fine the way it was, now it will require more steps to get parties together. Overall, I’d prefer this update be rolled back. None of the features improved the experience in any way, and only made it more cumbersome and painful. Finally, I briefyl said to myself, “I would just change to Xbox.” I am not doing it, but if I were someone who played different games across both platforms, I would probably do that.

    This update is just all bugs and unnecessary people can’t join there friend party no more ,and you have to be inna Group chat. Also lots of people don’t like the fact that the party where the bois be having there late night safe talk can be recorded .

    Sony I’ve always been a fan of the products and updates you’ve made for your games, but this has got to be the worst update to come onto the system. There are more glitches on here than games I have installed, My friends list won’t load( like many other people) and my screen will freeze on certain things in the home menu.( also another thing everyone is experiencing) And don’t even start talking about the new party system, it’s more complicated and confusing than flying a rocket to mars. Also, you want to listen to my party conversations with my friends okay cool, that might not be illegal everywhere, but have fun losing most of your customers because they don’t feel like being stalked by a game. Revert the changes and come up with a better solution to any problems you think it has. Try actually consulting your community before changing the game system they use or they wont be needing a PS5, because I can bet if the PS5 is anything like this, I know you will lose many, many customers.

      you need to be in a chat by yourself just to make a private party which so you need to invite someone and tell them to leave the chat just to do it

    Please explain to me how this new group = chat system is better than the old parties.
    Just take our group of friends. They are split into specific games where ppl overlap between groups.

    So now when 9 of us logon for gaming. We have the group1 with everyone in it. So far so good. We go play destiny. But now Bobby, billy and Timmy want to play rocket league they need to form a new group2.
    Then Eric wants to join but can’t because he can’t see group2 he’s not in it. He has to message people to be let in before he gets added. Then because there’s 4 people. They decide to play 2v2. Now group 3 and 4 have to be formed. Then they want to mix it up. So group 5 and 6 have to be formed. And for every combination of friends you will keep making new groups with no way to effectively keep them apart. Who thought of this idiotic way of making persistent chat groups that double as voice chats and how can we get in touch with him/her.

    Please admit that you screwed up, change this back ASAP, you broke communication on PlayStation.

    And yes I understand that this is implemented to be able to play with Ps4 and ps5 friends but this is NOT the solution.

    Crappy update. I do not like that i can not access my friends list. I dont feel this is secure and if anyone not on my firiends list is able to join my community chat….complete invasion of privacy!!!!!

    This update was a bloody dumpster fire filled with cow feces. Fix it and put it back to what it was already, terrible update and whoever had the incredibly stupid idea to merge the party and message system together needs a good firing.

    This update to the ps4 system is a load of BS, I cant join freinds party randomly cause of this, I cant stay in a party by myself an have freinds join in on their own free will, if I wanted a party private to myself I would of made it private an send freinds an player invites to it, but now I cant join anyone I want to when I want to plus a monitor of the party is a violation of privacy, plus this update makes it inconvenient for players to find a group of people to play a game with or just hangout in a party this just makes it hard to find a party and not being able to join one fast, this has too be one of the worst updates that has ever come to the ps4 system Sony should of had a trial run of the ps4 update for a 3 weeks to actually see how the party update changes the Ps4 party chat community, and have a check list to see how many people like or dislike the update to being able to join the party chats.

    I hate the new party system. You are so limited with the new system. Also such a dum idea ro link messenges and Party. No open lobbys, you can’t make a party for your self, you need a messege group for partys, you can’t go to Community Partys in Party Tab, you can’t kick people put of partys, the play together button doesn’t exist anymore.

    WHY DID YOU CHANGED THAT? So unessesary.

    “For the Players” Nobody likes that Update even without buggs it’s still trash.

    This update is DEFINITELY a step backwards. The ps4 is super slow, I cant see my friends list, I cant leave party’s, and the fact that they are invading our privacy and that you have to do all these steps just to invite someone to a party is just horrible. Playstation is a 37 billion dollar company. How could a company like that make things that were useful just disappear

    Nobody hat an issue with the old party system. Never change a running system but you still had to did it. Does anyone like the new one? No. Just read your feedback and test your uldates befor you publish them. If that realy stays like that i an gonna go to XBox. I realy liked Playstation but I can’t play like that

    Absolute garbage update with removal of features people want. Gamers want private communities, gamers don’t want Sony to act as moderators for our chats. You removed privacy from everything. No private parties. If this is what’s to come on ps5 I’m glad I didn’t get a preorder and did get an Xbox Series X preorder. You literally just stripped features from our current systems we’ve invested money into in order to support your new system. Which if you had advertised these features, I never would’ve bought one in the first place. You truly are out of touch with what your customers want.

      honestly considering switching over to xbox. The ps4 was an amazing console especially for its party and chat systems but sony had to ruin it. I know for sure that if sony doesn’t go back to the old party system, many player will switch over to xbox

    GUYS, Sony man like come on ive played on like every system, but I loved yours the most because of the party system and im not joking your party system used to be amazing and private but now this update has messed it all up and im considering going back to Xbox because my voice getting recorded is bs and how these parts are set are kind of dumb and I know for a fact you didn’t have to do this for ps5 because a network like yours isn’t weak and it could have stayed the same plus if you really had to make changes there would be so much more of them if this was really for the ps5.

    I’m having the same problem. Wont allow me to start a party with a buddy I play with everyday because he hasn’t updated yet and apparently it’s no l I’m never compatible. This is absolutely ridiculous.

    This is really bad. I want my chats public for anyone in my friends list or their friends to join not this weird private chat that only people I add can join even see.

    If this is how the PS5 works you guys are in trouble. WHY “fix” what isn’t broken??? Change it back.

    Honesty, this update is completely garbage. Why in the world is it necessary for me to create a party through a group chat? It makes me so mad that the party system no longer has public parties. I legit can’t even see my friends online. The party system didn’t need changing and should be changed back. Every thing is all messed up on my ps4 now and it’s so hard to do anything. please change the party system back

    this is great i think if you have to report someone in your chat party they shouldn’t have been invited or kicked before anywords are exchanged. no need to be a snow flake if you can’t play nice with others dont play multi player games.. come on cant even start a normal chat now great update. way to earn that pay check.

    This update started to slow my system SIGNIFICANTLY. It takes a extremely long time to load my friends list and then sometimes scrolling down it will say “cannot load” . Top that the party settings did not need to be changed except the mute option. Not the 30 other changes that were added or the removal of the public or private option. Also, when my friends join or I join them we were having load time issues just joining. There was a point my friend thought his system froze. This was 3 steps back and not a fan. Bring back the old party settings. Or at least most of them. I do like the fact you can add people from group chats in ps messages.

    Umm I don’t know what y’all did but now the parties are less secure and less private like letting blocked users join? Honestly if y’all haven’t messed the parties then everything would’ve been fine. Plus there was already a mic mute button in the party for users that can’t mute their mic physically. I understand if the update was for the ps5 but come on we can’t even talk in a party without being recorded.

    The new chat interface is a bag of warm vomit. I’ll be spending my ps5 money on a pc. It makes chat entirely too complicated and now have to have 30 different groups to have a chat? I don’t think so. I know I’m not the only one saying this. Put it back or I’m fine with psn.
