Includes changes to Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls and more.
UPDATE: Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.
Our latest system software update for PlayStation 4, version 8.00, is launching today globally. This update includes changes to the existing Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls and more.
Here are some of the key features in this update:
Updates to Party and Messages
Following this update, Party and Messages will be more tightly linked together and you will see changes to the UI. Both apps will now use the same ‘Groups’ of players for Party voice chats and message exchanges, instead of having different groups setup across the two apps. So now you can start a Party chat or send a message to the group you’ve previously chatted with across PS4, as well as PS5 when it launches.
New Avatars
We’re expanding the collection of pre-set avatars for players to showcase on their Profile. An array of new avatars from your favorite games will be available, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and many more.
Mute all Mics from Quick Menu
We’ve added an option to “Mute all Microphones” in the Quick Menu, so you can easily mute your mics while gaming.
Simplified and more flexible Parental Controls
Under Parental Controls, we’re combining the ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’- to cover both areas of communication and UGC sharing. This offers a simpler setting that’s easier for parents to understand and apply to their children.
In addition, children can send a request to their parents to use communications features in specific games. When a child sends this request, the parent will receive an email notification and can choose to make an exception for that game and allow the child to use its communications and UGC features. This will provide more flexibility to both parents and children.
Enhanced 2-Step Verification
The 2-Step Verification (2SV) feature on PS4 will be enhanced to support third party authenticator apps as an option during the activation flow and 2SV sign-in across PS4, mobile and web.
Removal of Event Creation and Private Community Creation
After 8.00, you will no longer be able to create Events or access existing Events created by other users.
We’re also removing the ability to create private Communities under the Community app on PS4. If you already have existing private Communities, you can continue to access them.
Updates to Remote Play App on Mobile and PC
At the same time as 8.00, the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile (iOS/Android), Windows PC and Mac, will change its name to PS Remote Play, and the option to connect to PS5 will be added. You’ll need to sign in to PSN from your PS5 to be able to access the feature, so sit tight until PS5 launches this November!
As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended to download the update.

“Mute all Mics from Quick Menu” – Finally. My headphone does not have a built-in mute and it drives me crazy when playing online.
We’ve always been able to mute in the party menu itself but not having to exit the game, enter the party menu, muting and then going back into the game will sure be nice.
I wonder however if this means we can mute the entire party (for example if you need to focus) or if this only applies to your mic…
I’m glad that they added that because I couldn’t mute my mic anymore It was broken but unfortunately what also came with this update is that your party can’t be public anymore and you have to create a group to invite people and Community parties can’t be created basically destroying games they don’t have in-game voice chat
Honestly? The party system did not need changing. I can only assume this is for integration with PS5. But it is objectively worse. It now takes longer and is a way more roundabout way of creating parties. Plus no public/private option makes no sense. This is genuinely a step backwards.
(Don’t ask why that was a reply 🤷♂️)
@ SlashingShadow – It’s funny that you said that this is a step backwards cuz that’s exactly what Sony usually does when they change things with their updates.
Absolutely horrible update. System freezes all the time now, can’t start parties without getting an error and the setup is terrible to start parties. Ps basically broke everything that was working. Thanks chinks
Now thatthe system updated to being able to mute all mics guess we dont need to see what friends we got on. Will not load friends list after update
I hear some people saying that they’re removing the friends list and that might why your friends list isn’t showing up
Ok I updated my ps4 today now I can’t see my friends on the friends list so mate pls fix this pls
Does anyone have a fix for this? It gave me the error for file could not be found then I try to update using safe mode bot it gives me ce-34921-9 and tells me to connect a lan cable. But I dont have a lan cable. Is there a fix other than going out and buying a lan cable.
The ps4 was way better without this update please fix theres been multiple complaints on tweeter and Instagram and there’s alot of bugs as well.
It takes years to load and you cant make party with out a group chat
There was absolutely nothing that this update improved. Completely unnecessary. Thanks for solving a problem nobody had and ruining something that was perfectly functional in the process.
Horrible update pls revert back pls I beg you sony
I don’t like this because they hear you and like you can’t swear by more and that’s annoying because we all now we all swear at sometime when we play so I hope they take out the things where they are always hearing our party chat. I swear to got if I get banned for swearing I’m litterly going to switch to Xbox and PC yea Xbox and PC so I hope they take that out please .
Dude this sucks I can’t even play my game COD!!
Playstation need to undo the update cause its causing people system to glitch right after the update and you can’t see your friends and you can’t even go into your friends party
Playstation u better be prepared for alot of call tomorrow because everyone’s going to call u and raise hell
If playstation screws up my system with this update they are getting me a new one or their going to court
Wow sony, look what you did. Nobody asked for this and i’m sure if you don’t fix it your sales are gonna go down and xbox is gonna make a lot more money than you. Just saying
Pls just give us our regular parties and give us our privacy because this invades our privacy. This might be the downgrade of PlayStation it was the best version now it’s still GREAT but it’s going to be recorded and a lot of people won’t find that fun.
Nope dont like it if i gotta mute my mic WHILE IM IN THE GAME the hassle is going to be to mute my mic on screen i rather just click a button on my mic 🤣
I make $82h while I’m traveling the world. Last week I worked by my laptop in Rome, Monti Carlo and finally Paris…This week I’m back in the USA. All I do are easy tasks from this one cool site.

If they don’t undo this update BEFORE HALLOWEEN!!! I’m switching to XBOX
1 thing I would love being implemented would be to have saved replays of your games to cut down on memory that direct video cost on the crucial memory space.
Final Fantasy Dissidia has that on the PSP where it saves the actions taken by the player and recreates it whenever you want to replay and record them into video.
The save game files are only 85kb, standard mp4 of that same gameplay is an average 100mb or more and they aren’t full HD or anything, so 4k videos would take even bigger part of the internal memory than just recreation of the action.
Now, this does mean that you’ll need to reprocess the gameplay again before getting a mp4 video out of it, but think of all the internal storage you save by doing so, saving all the actions of your game as a save file, to then take out whichever parts you want to make a video out of.
I have over 2 Tb of gameplay stored on External and Internal HDD on the PS4 and that method would drastically cut the cost of memory, allowing for more games purchases giving more revenue for Sony.
YouTubers will also love you for it, giving you good promotion.
And, all that saved space means more place for games.
It might require developers to add this feature inside their games but with the PS5 already storing cache data, that could be a great place to start building an add-on to the UX and games.
If you can find a party
omg I have mixed feeling about this update, my mic is broken so the mute all mics option is a plus. But on the other hand I don’t like how the party things are now the parties aren’t going to be as fun as they once was. Now we can’t have random people join the party and not knowing what could happen. Which was fun and funny.
This new update fried my HDD now I can’t play on my ps4 as a stay at home dad. Come to find out the ps5 is launching its sale date November 12th coincidence? Tear up all the sony Playstation users devices right before they launch there newest console. My CoD Warzone addiction is very mad!!! Sincerely ign LordMurderer. I am very disgusted with sony after this stunt.
