Marvel’s Avengers confirmed as free upgrade to PS5

See how the PS5 version of Marvel's Avengers will shine when it lands this Holiday.

I became a serious game development hobbyist when I was a kid and I’ve worked as a professional game developer for the past 18 years. I’m now the Chief Technology Officer at Crystal Dynamics, where I am working with a brilliant and passionate development team on Marvel’s Avengers.

Throughout my life, there has been little that excites me as much as getting my hands on a next-generation video game console — and PS5 is no exception. I have had the tremendous pleasure and privilege of having a PS5 development kit on my desk for some time. When we received our first few kits, I rushed to put an engineering team on the task of creating a PS5 version of Marvel’s Avengers as quickly as possible. I wanted to push Foundation, our proprietary game engine, to its limits on PS5 and see what it could do. Take a look at what we’ve accomplished so far!

PS5 greatly lifts the performance and graphics bar for consoles. The new GPU allows us to increase our texture resolution, push a higher level of detail farther from the player, enhance our ambient occlusion, improve our anisotropic filtering and add a variety of new graphics features such as stochastic screen-space reflections with contact-aware sharpening.

If you’re a technophile like me, you enjoy having a bit of choice in how you leverage your cutting-edge console’s capability. As gamers, we sometimes want every ounce of power put into extra graphics features to achieve the highest image quality possible. For this, Marvel’s Avengers will offer an enhanced graphics mode on PS5. At other times, we want the most fluid gameplay experience possible. For that, Marvel’s Avengers will offer a high framerate mode on PS5, which targets 60 FPS with dynamic 4K resolution.

The GPU and CPU improvements on PS5 are exciting, but even more exciting is the introduction of an ultra-high speed SSD with lightning fast load speeds. This is a transformative improvement in consoles that will reduce load times down to one or two seconds and enable real-time streaming of massive worlds at ridiculously fast speeds. Without any optimization work, the loading and streaming of Marvel’s Avengers improved by an order of magnitude on PS5. When optimization is complete, loading content will be nearly instant, allowing players to seamlessly jump into missions anywhere in the game world. And as Iron Man flies through content-rich levels, higher resolution textures and mesh will stream in instantly, maintaining the highest possible quality all the way to the horizon.

The new PS5 DualSense controller offers advanced haptics and resistance triggers, and the console itself offers enhanced 3D audio and new platform features that allow you to jump straight into the action. We have great ideas on ways to leverage these features in Marvel’s Avengers and are looking forward to seeing our players’ reactions.

At Crystal Dynamics, we are gamers and we have a gamer-first mentality. We want to make it easy for Marvel’s Avengers players to enjoy the additional features PS5 brings to the game.

Therefore, we’re happy to announce that when you purchase Marvel’s Avengers for the PS4 platform, either digitally or on disc, and later upgrade to a PS5, you get the PS5 version of the game with all of its enhancements free of charge!

In addition, PS5 gamers can play Marvel’s Avengers online with PS4 gamers, so anyone can upgrade at any time and continue playing with friends on both platforms.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on September 4, 2020 and will be available on PS5 when the console launches Holiday 2020!

  • What’s frankly ridiculous is why the physical version of the game requires one time internet for use. That’s obscene for a closed in consumer platform like PlayStation. Disguised drm

  • The fact that this needs to be a big announcement is ridiculous.

This should be a feature for EVERY game across the board. Especially games released as we cross over from PS4 to 5.

    • Stupid. Tell that to literally every single console that’s come out before. Get a clue. Appreciate what should be appreciated.

    • You’re ridiculous if you think every single developer is going to go back and make free enhancements to every current gen game released for free like that’s just some simple little thing they can just flip a switch for. That’s an incredibly naive expectation.

    • Agreed, this graphical upgrade should be standard across the board for PS4 titles

    • It happens on the PC, I have had free upgrades to the remastered versions of Bioshock 1 & 2, Skyrim, Mafia 2 & 3 and Borderlands all of which are completely new versions.

    • Nah, you are ridiculous.
Tell Micro$oft to stop saying “SmArT DeLiVeRy”.

    • Smart delivery is something Xbox supported from the 360 with Destiny one to the Xbox one so they’re just doing what they invented and usually do PlayStation is the one that canceled their backwards compatibility and then gives you a handful of games to buy again and in this case they’re trying to play catch-up since they have an inferior powered system with fast load times I’m going to own both systems I’m just saying they can call it smart delivery because they did it first and they’re doing it for everything not just select games whether it’s backwards compatibility or helping put value into their customer PlayStation has to do it otherwise they’re going to be left like last time with forcing people to upgrade

    • Even Smart Delivery from Microsoft is opt in. It is not mandatory for 3rd Party Devs to offer a free upgrade. Sony is doing the same thing here. At least you will be able to play most PS4 games via backwards compatibility on the PS5.

    • @i-am-the-icon PS4 literally launched with free cross buy versions of games like Flower. 2 years later we got a 100% free PS4 version of Journey.

Sorry but cross buy is a PlayStation standard since 2012. The AMOUNT of the games released on PS4 this gen that included PS3 and PS Vita games as a standard is astounding.

Other developers simply did not follow suit because Xbox wasn’t doing it. I think Microsoft still charges 3 times for Halo Spartan Assault on Windows, 360 and Xbone lol, they did at the start of the gen anyway.

  • Awesome news!! Will there be crossplay PS4/PS5 as well?!

  • Sounds great. Thank you for the info.
But will Marvel’s Avengers will be released as real PS5 game also?
    I mean if I can buy it on a PS5 blu-ray?

  • What will happen if I buy Avengers physically on PS4 but want to get the digital-only version of the PS5?

    • You’ll get the PS5 upgrade regardless if you buy it on PS4 at retail or digitally.

    • @ Mercenary09, you didn’t answer his question at all. If he buys the disc version on PS4 but buys the ps5 digital version, he won’t get a upgrade. There is no way for him to validate he owns the game. Unless they come out with a way to do it otherwise, you may be out of luck. I’m getting the disc ps5 for this reason alone. I love collecting.

    • Each game disk basically as a S/N on the disk, now “if” Sony have a database of what game each S/N is for you could basically load into the store on PS5 and enter a S/N thats not been used already and claim your PS5 version. But it’s all a matter of if Sony log that kind of data.

    • I suppose will works like did on PS3-PS4 upgrade. You put your PS4 disc, and the PS5 game is digitally downloaded, but you need the disc for validation check

    • It’s like cyberpunk 2077 if you have a PS4 disk you need a PS5 with disk reader. If you want the PS5 Digital edition then you need to buy it digitally on PS4.

  • That’s cool, but…I might as well just wait for the ps5 version then.

  • So is there going to be a PS5 retail version as well or simply just an upgrade to PS5?

    • Yes there will be. That’s how these things always work.

    • No one knows for sure yet. It sounds like there will be a download/patch only. If you think about the situation, a $60 version on a PS5 disc released around Black Friday when that PS4 edition will cost like $30 that day and offer a PS5 upgrade which is the same game. They’ll lose money on production costs and etc. It would be cool to have a disc version tho, we will see official word but it does seem unlikely but you never know.

  • That is such a great idea, a way of buying a the current consoles version and when the new console is delivered it is smart enough to give you the new version!

Hey if you use the Delivery Smart name I want a percentage!

    • “Smart delivery”? The PlayStation 4 launched with this feature. I got the PS4 version for several games this way at launch. Cross-buy, cross-save, cross-play all started on PlayStation.

  • I and others in the gaming community pre-ordered the game on Xbox and other gamers on PC. There is NO excuse for you all not making the same announcement for Smart Delivery. The strongest console should receive the exact upgrades. To purposely not, but then charge Xbox players for the upgrade would be disgusting. You already have less then great press, but to not honor all gamers would be the final nail.

    • Lol wow you really think this is something exclusive? And it’s just sad how worked up you got over something that hasn’t and isn’t happening. What made you think Xbox has to double dip in paying?

  • I understand business just like Xbox and Cyberpunk 2077, but to use superheroes in this fashion along with Sony holding the Miles expansion to PS5 locking out PS4 owners is getting nasty. Kids and families play games. This is the worse time to money grab. Prove me wrong Square. Show everyone that you won’t lock characters and upgrades of a multiplatform game to one console. You would be the only one and that will kill the game as a service model.

    • You don’t understand business because if you did you’d know that just because Sony doesn’t have some fancy name for cross-gen upgrades doesn’t mean the PS5 isn’t getting the free update. Concerning Miles, how is it locking out PS4 owners when the game is meant to take advantage and showcase the PS5? Also Square has nothing to do with the deal between Marvel and PlayStation Game Studios.

You sound like a misinformed Karen.

    • @MUSTANG750R
“…just because Sony doesn’t have some fancy name for cross-gen upgrades…”

      Cross-Buy has been a thing since mid-2012 across Vita, PS3, and PS4.

  • Will the dynamic 4K mode offer any form of temporal reconstruction over its initial rendering resolution? Those sorts of techniques always work better at high framerates – more samples, less pixel change between frames, less artifacts.

  • Glad to see that Devs are taking advantage of Forward compatibility and to ensure that no one doesn’t feel left behind if they don’t own a PS5 yet, yet still to be able to play with their friends. We’re hoping for Cross-platform play somewhere in the future.

  • Dynamic 4K, PS5 is weak, Hermen Hulst and Jim Ryan are traitors

  • 1st MMO i went crazy for was City of Heroes. At that time it was the perfect superhero game. DCUO came out and stole all of the players. I figured when i started hearing about this game it would be similar in that I could create my own hero. The game play, graphics and storyline might be epic. But not being able to create my own hero puts this game in the 2nd tier.

No way you guys are gamers, making a marvel game and not let players create their own hero. Unless thats fixed this games fame will be short lived.

  • Sony is going to pre-load GTA6 story mode, make everything else on the game pay-to-play, & sell approximately 1 billion consoles in the first year.

  • This is very epic! Hopefully ray tracing will come to PC as well.

  • Does anyone even care about this game? It looked so bad, aesthetically and level design wise, and it’s just trying to cash in on the dying success of Marvel. After being vastly disappointed in Endgame I had hoped Marvel would just stop but this roller coaster just keeps crashing down

  • Hey Garry. This is Kristopher from India. I am a big fan of Sony Playstation since a very long time probably you can say since PS2. One of my biggest dreams was to get into gaming as a career option. Because that’s what I love doing. I think at the end of the day you need to be happy with what you are doing or even working for that matter.

I am currently working in an IT firm as a project manager but to be honest I am not happy with what I am doing right now. I wish that I could switch careers but I don’t know if that will make sense to me now.

Garry of you ever have an opening for me please let me know I would like to try my luck into this domain. I know this is off topic.

If you feel this comment was irrelevant you are free to delete or just ignore is fine. I just felt like I could voice out my opinion.

  • Can you give me a pre order

  • And just like that, Xbox’s “Smart Delivery” feature bragging rights gets thrown away to the wolves as PS5 will have it as well, based on Developer Decision.

  • Where do we sign up…

  • This is great news i already pre-ordered the ps4 deluxe edition ps4 disc for this game and i’ll be getting the disc version ps5 system when that comes out i was hoping for a upgrade to to the ps5.

  • Why the price of playstation take so long to show up. Stop making ppl. Ancillary for the time to know a price this days alot money lost. How much ppl need to save dam price don’t show up yety

  • I trow my PS4 now I wan mine PS5 where is it. But wait I will wait CZ my PC is to much than ps5

  • Thank you Team PlayStation for making such a marvelous platform that allows developers to make awesome games with awesome graphics like this! <3

  • Is it going to be mainly focused on single player adventure like Tomb Raider (with some coop missions) or more online-oriented Destiny style game?

    • Wouldn’t you think we would know this by now 12 months after its reveal, 4 years since it first started development lol.

  • Don’t care. This game has crappy online stuff that hinders the game and is most certainly why it was pushed back from its original release date. Your wording adince before the game’s reveal has been terrible.
I still don’t know how much of the game is online/single player. I’m guessing it’s 80/20.

  • I really hope that cross-buy and cross-play is the norm going from PS4 to PS5

  • I do hope every other games from the PS4 gets these enhanced features on the PS5 from here on out.

    Good Work guys!

  • Well, I severely doubt they’ll send me a physical upgrade and I don’t want to have to download the whole thing so these free upgrades are useless if you’re not into digital.
Guess I’ll just have to wait for the PS5 version. Not a big deal for this one, but for Cyberpunk I won’t be able to hold out.

  • Just here for the comments

  • Crossplay?

I have no interest in this game without that feature.

  • Will it have its own ps5 disc/case?

  • I don’t own ps4 but I am thinking about buying ps5.
If I buy the game now and get preorder bonuses (costumes) for ps4 will they be added to ps5 versions after I upgrade to ps5?
Upgrade is like second game or is it like playing game from steam on 2 different pc?
If preordered costumes are just for ps4 versions then is there a reason (for someone like me who doesnt have ps4 ) to buy it now?
Will preorder costumes be available later for ps5 players since the game launches faster then new ps?

  • This sounds good at face value, but I’m curious about whether your savegame can be ported as well?

  • I pre-ordered deluxe edition on PS4 so if I get the PS5 will they send me a physical copy of the game on PS5 or will it just be a free digital upgrade

Cos I really want it to be a physical I ain’t into digital

  • Be kind, considerate, and constructive…

Honestly, I can’t do all three of those things. So I’ll go with constructive.

This game looks awful. Yay, you prettied up the graphics for the PS5. But that doesn’t do anything for the terrible dialogue, voice acting, combat, pacing, on-the-rails design, character design, music, sound effects…

This game should have been shut down a while ago and handed off to a studio that could make a game we’d actually be excited to play. I’m legitimately having more fun playing LEGO Marvel Avengers with my son than I suspect I ever would with this game.

It’s not even trying to be as good as Insomniac’s Spider-Man, and they should know that’s what gamers are looking for. This game is so last gen it’s just a disappointment. So much work put into a title that’s only hope on not flopping is Avengers fandom, and relying on fans to buy a title just because of who is in it is, well, neither kind nor considerate. It’s disengenous.

  • “Marvel’s Avengers confirmed as free upgrade to PS5”

You mean it will be cross-buy with PS4 and PS5. Why not use the branding and lingo we’ve been accustomed to since 2012?

  • Thanks for doing this. It means I don’t have to wait for the PS5 launch to buy this game, which is something I have to consider with games that are coming out so close to the new consoles. I would love it if Playstation made this true for all games coming out at this point but I understand the many business issues at play. I appreciate that at least Square is being clear about what they are doing for this game. Plus I’m glad to hear you will take the time to optimize for the new console to more fully take advantage of the new features.

  • This was all done before with AC Black Flag. It was a 10.00 upgrade but was digital. There was a code that came with the disc to upgrade.

  • pls be good pls be good pls be good pls be good
