Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – An update from Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games shares more about Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the new standalone game in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

Hi! I’m Brian Horton, Creative Director at Insomniac Games. Last week, we were so thrilled to introduce you to the beginning of your Marvel’s Spider-Man journey on PlayStation 5 – Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This standalone game lets players experience the rise of Miles Morales as he discovers new powers that set him apart from his mentor, Peter Parker.

The reaction we received last week was nothing short of incredible. But we wanted to take a little bit of extra time to talk about the game and the trailer you saw and point out some things you might’ve missed. Take a look above.

At Insomniac Games, we’ve loved the character of Miles Morales for a long time. It started years ago, when Bryan Intihar (Creative Director, Marvel’s Spider-Man), suggested that we should have Miles Morales be a part of the same universe as Peter Parker. We sneakily introduced him at the end of our E3 2017 demo, surprising the audience when they thought the PlayStation Briefing was over.

As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

Let’s set the scene for the game a little more. It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle.

We know a lot of you want to know how big this game is. Our team at Insomniac has been working incredibly hard to bring you a fantastic Miles Morales adventure since we concluded development on Marvel’s Spider-Man. You’ll experience a full story arc with Miles, one that’s more akin to a game like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of overall scope. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an important, heartfelt, emotional and essential experience to expanding the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. And we hope it will be for you as well.

We are also excited for the game to demonstrate the power of PlayStation 5 this holiday. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.

It’s been amazing to be creative director on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, working with such an incredible team. I joined Insomniac near the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and being able to collaborate with our team and Marvel to create a new story and experience all around Miles Morales has been a career highlight. It’s been great to also work with Bryan Intihar, who directed the first game, as he continues to imagine big things for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

Oh and one last thing: Many of you fans have wondered if Peter Parker is OK. Don’t worry, we still have much of Peter’s story left to tell. But this game is all about Miles, a critical part of our Spider-Man universe, and you won’t want to miss what happens.

Thank you so much for the incredible reaction to our game last week, and for all of the kind words on social media. We’re so looking forward to getting to spend more time with you in the coming months to reveal more of the game we’ve all been working on.

We can’t wait to see you swinging through a wintery Marvel’s New York City this holiday. For all the latest, be sure to follow Insomniac Games on Instagram and Twitter.

  • im so happy to see miles getting recognition, this is a def buy for me, can’t wait

  • Day 1 buy for me. I know that Spider-Man 2 is no doubt in the works so this will be nice to have in the meantime. Can’t wait to earn another Spider-Man Platinum.

    • I bet Brian Intihar isn’t the creative director of this game because Spider-Man 2 is indeed in development already and he is working on it instead.

    • Honestly I have some doubts about SpiderMan2 being in the works.
It is kind of specific superhero who does not work very well outside of Manhattan (and few other ares). So placing the sequel elsewhere will be difficult. But keeping it on the same map will be strange.
So considering tham original SM contains Avengers tower, I actually expect that the franchise will move even to other marvel superheroes. And full sequel wont focus on Sidey so much.

  • And there it is. Thanks guys. STOKED for this game on PS5.

    • Amazing that this and Ratchet are releasing so early for next gen. An official Spider-Man 2 most likely will come later. But please Insomniac: Resistance 4!!

  • So 30fps, I suppose.

    • I really hope we get the option to run the game at 60fps and 1440p or close.

    • probably. when we pay about $500 for a console we do not expect the power of a $1000+ Gaphic card. Only high tier PC’s are able to consistently deliver 4k@60fps. so expecting 4k@60fps in an expansive openworld for a low-budget console is exagerating lol

    • Vanlischtenstein:
Im not sure comparing PC and console HW by the price tags is not making much sense. Because these have completelly different bussiness and costing models.

If Nvidia could receive portion of money for every game purchased and played on it and get subscription fees from any player that played online on their HW, trust me, that their 1000+USD card would not cost 1000+USD but much less to attract customers :-D

Also there is difference between performance you can get when programming for once single unified HW with possibility to access directly the HW. And there is difference with making game where your code is proccess by directx, then by card drivers and then by the HW itself. These two additional steps significantly limits developers options. So 500USD PC will never be able to run the same stuff as 500USD console :-/

    • What do you think, this is what Insomniac had to say about 60fps 11 years ago.

“However, during development, there are hard choices to be made between higher quality graphics and framerate. And we want to make the right choices that reflect our commitment to providing you with the best looking games out there. To that end, our community team did some research into the question of framerate. The results perhaps confirmed what I’ve known for a long time, but found it difficult to accept without evidence. They found that:

A higher framerate does not significantly affect sales of a game.
A higher framerate does not significantly affect the reviews of a game.

And in particular they found that there was a clear correlation between graphics scores in reviews (where they are provided) and the final scores. And they found no such correlation between framerate and the graphics scores nor the final scores.
As an interesting side-note, our team also found no direct correlation between gameplay scores and final scores, however it does appear that gameplay scores are also influenced by graphics scores. i.e. Better looking games appear to be more “fun” to reviewers, in general.”

So there you have it. Can nobody ever question this ancient topic again now?

Of course not, this is the internet AFTER 2012 after all.

    • You fps whor*s always talk about it as if it matters lol, makes me laugh but also sad how rotten the gaming community has become.

  • I’m looking forward to creating more combo videos with Miles now. Just make sure to tell Adam to delete the whips this time around! (I kid, but seriously, super stoked about this game thank you all so much!)

  • It would be nice to have an option for quality/performance mode in Insomniac games. Web slinging across the city at a lower than 4K res but @60fps would be absolutely awesome. Same for Ratchet… You know, like on PS2…

    • Yeah, seems like they stuck with their opinion from the 2009 interview with Eurogamer:
‘According to the developer, there is no marketing premium, or review score value, in supporting the highest-possible refresh rate common to all HDTVs. “We want to give you guys, our fans and players, the best looking games you can buy on a console,” says engine director Mike Acton, and 60FPS actually gets in the way of that.’

    • Yeah if this or Ratchet and Clank are at 30fps I’m not interested, maybe grab it pre-owned later but if it had 60fps day one buy

    • Do you know how costly ray tracing is? They might be able to manage 1080p but maybe not even 1440p 60

    • Apparently not much since they’re still aiming for 4k. They can easily turn off ray tracing to allow 1440p at 60fps.

  • So it’s short. Thanks for clarifying.

    • show the part of the article where he “confirms” it’s short.

    • There are people who use 1080p tv yet. We want 1080p/60fps, no downsampled 4K/30fps

    • @THEMAN64 He confirmed it is short by saying it is half the length of Spider-Man PS4. Spider-MAn PS4 is 15-20 hours. 35 for a completionist with DLC. HEre is the part of the article you should re-read. “We know a lot of you want to know how big this game is. Our team at Insomniac has been working incredibly hard to bring you a fantastic Miles Morales adventure since we concluded development on Marvel’s Spider-Man. You’ll experience a full story arc with Miles, one that’s more akin to a game like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of overall scope.” In this case, Miles Morales is going to be half that, so around at least 10-15 hours probably.

    • not everyone can sit on their ass all day playing a videogame 9 hours a day lad.

    • Jisatsu_Kiddo you are the kind of person that enjoys paying 60 dollars for demo as long as it has Sony written on it

  • So Brian Intihar isn’t the creative director of this game, meaning they probably started developing Marvel’s Spider-man 2 at the same time with some of the developers, and the rest will join after Miles Morales releases 👌

  • I just started playing the first one, even though I’ve owned it for a long time, and I’m looking forward to this one as well.

Since I had waited this long to play the first game, I considered waiting until the PS5 released in order to play it on that. However, once I saw the announcement a week ago, I decided to play so I could try to play Miles Morales’ story at launch.

  • Thank you Insomniac Games!

  • Is this exclusive to PS5? Or can I also buy it on PS4?

  • Not asking for 120 but atleast will there be a 60fps mode option?

    • ray tracing

    • “Ray tracing” what’s your point? Ps5 games majority will be 60fps or higher unless it’s an indie, WITH ray tracing

    • anyone asking for 120 isn’t very smart. 99.9% of tvs don’t support it. 99.999999999999% of the people who own a tv, do NOT have a tv that will use 120fps.
so smart of you not to ask for it.

  • What’s up danger.

  • Love how, Miles is soaring to even higher heights as time goes on! Definitely a day 1 buy and reason for me to get the console.

    • miles is still a D list rip off/race swap, no one cared/cares about him for the last 11 years. This is just a quick cash grab to hold over a few people until spider-man is released.

    • @Jiasatsu_Kiddo clearly you haven’t read a comic or seen any recent Spider-Man show or ain’t touched a Marvel game in the last 5 years cause Miles has been in everything. Not to mention he stared in his own film so ima have to tell you you’re wrong King. He’s rised in prominence as the years have gone by and he’s only 9 years old.

  • It will be a 4-8 hour game at $59.99 using same engine on new PS5 Platform. It’s basically “extendeddddddd DLC” Something is better THAN NOTHING.

  • are you gonna make miles a cop in this one?

  • That was a bit light on information but I am looking forward to this Miles chapter as I love to return that that universe. Thank you insomniac for making 2 games I want to buy (Ratchet & Clank is the other one).

  • The fact that you at Sony/Insomniac started the development of this project in May 2018, before Spider-Man PS4 release and way before Spider-Verse (Dec 2018), actually shows how smart you are !
The way you have thought Miles game is a good idea, bravo !

We all wanted that and you have done it, great job !

  • “Upgraded with 4D Scans”
    What does that even mean??????

    • Looks like muscle/soft tissue deformation akin to GoW may be in unlike that title, this looks to be 3D scanned instead of being hand modeled.

  • This was a bummer of an announcement. I wanted to see more of Peter’s Spiderman Adventures. The miles parts were the most boring parts of the game

    • How dare they do something that one dude on the internet didn’t want. 🙄

    • they keep trying to say people like miles when it is proven false time and time again. no one has liked miles for 11 years the only people cheering it on is marvel for that hot hot licensing fee.

  • Can you guys please label him correctly. He’s not just black he’s also half African American and also half Puerto Rican. It’s important you label him correctly cause you are putting a race above another and isolating them. I’m an afro-Latino and very proud to be black and Latino. Please it’s very offensive to me and not doing the character justice. He’s not just black and not just Spanish, HE’S BOTH WHICH MAKES HIM SPECIAL cause he represents both bridges.

  • That clears things up. I’ve never liked Miles Morales, so I’m still not buying it.

  • So this is a PS4 game too? Insomniac keeps avoiding saying it’s a PS5 exclusive. Seems like the PS5 version will be better, but I guarantee this is a PS4/PS5 cross-gen game. Why else are they refusing to say it’s a PS5 exclusive?

  • I find myself very disappointed in finding out this isn’t a full release.
And yes it’s stand-alone I’m the literal technical send of being able to launch the game on its own without booting up the main Spiderman game but it’s still just add on content and just a way to make money on already developed assets. Reusing assests is smart. capitalizing/ and I’m sure in some sense supporting positivity in the current climate is good but this felt like a disservice. Not just because it was short which hey I think Black people are used to that. But the defensive and misleading follow up when called out about the scope of the game is disappointing. No spin needed you guys made a short follow up to Spiderman with miles is standalone dlc and not a sequel as many thought and hoped it was. That would have been bold this is a hedge bet and quick flip but be real and it instead of trying to dip and dodge the reality. I get it money but I dunno if I love insomniac as much after this…

    • you haven’t even seen or played this game – it’s 6 months from release and you’re already complaining – welcome to the internet.

  • I am all in! Please tell me we will get a PS5 SE Spider-Man: Miles Morales edition? That is the system I want.

  • Great stuff. I figured it’d be something along the lines of a standalone game. Ofcourse I’d be happier with a full game but this this’ll do nicely in the meantime, and this way they’ll have more experience developing for PS5 by the time they do the full game.

  • Miles is great because Miles is great. He doesn’t reflect a more modern diverse “world”. Ever leave the US? How diverse is China or Japan? Pretty sure they are in the world. How diverse, under these silly rules is Africa. The US have many ethnic groups but we are not the world.

Miles is great. Don’t sully the game with this corporate multicultural nonsense speak.

    • Ever leave your basement? There are non-white people all over the US. You’re deliberate ignoring the context here, which is that he’s a major non-white character in a superhero comic universe that up until relatively recently was made up of about 95% white dudes (and the same could be said about video game protagonists for that matter).

    • THANKYOU!!!!!!!! so true!

  • The more Miles the better

  • Lost Legacy length story with challenges in a revamped NY?
Playing as Miles with his own set of powers and quips?

Who’s kidding, you guys had me the second I recognized the black suit in the trailer.

  • Don’t care for this tokenized spider-man but will pick it up on release.

  • Will the speed of web swinging be quicker? The limits of PS4 only allowed web swinging to be so fast but with PS5 it should be even better!

    Any comments on this??

  • I’m so excited to play spider man miles morales I can’t wait for the ps5 to come out so I can play this game and im also looking forward to the new console and all the great games that we will be able to play on the ps5 thanks guys for working really hard on the game and thank you sony for pushing the limits of technology to bring us an amazing console iv been more excited about this generation and its console and games then any other time before I can’t wait for November I wish it would hurry up and get here .I hope you will continue to push technology forward and keep giving us the best games and the best consoles money can buy.

  • Hi does this mean that Spiderman: Miles Morales will not be on PS4 and only on PS5

  • Insomniac is a Godsend for Spider-Man fans. Thank you all for working so hard, especially now, and I can’t wait to see how you all expand the mythology with your take on Spidey’s world through Miles.

  • Unfortunately since I bought over 500 PS4 games including Marvels SPIDERMAN COLLECTORS EDITION as well as 65 other collectors EDITIONS, I won’t be buying a PLAYSTATION 5.

  • Hope it would have been released in PS4 because I dont know if I would ever be able to play this game because I have a ps4. After playing the first game this was the game I was most excited about but only to know that its ps5 exclusive.😔

  • Not a full game…. so what price?

  • can’t wait to the ps5 is here spiderman ratchet & clank a must have

  • Please add 60fps options to this and Ratchet like Bluepoint is doing with Demon’s Souls. It would be nice to play Insomniac games at 60fps again like they were on systems much weaker than the PS5.

  • One question. 1 DLC episode, all DLC, full base game, full game plus DLC. In terms of length where does “Miles Morales” fit on this list?

  • They got it wrong miles lives in Brooklyn not Harlem.

  • Legends. Don’t know how you do it but it doesn’t look like your game output is about to slow down anytime soon.

  • ‘Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world’

WTH! Racists… I guess I’m not ‘diverse’ enough for you so I suppose you don’t want my money then? 😡

  • Will there be a collector’s edition of the game?
