PS5 showcase recap: Everything you need to know

PlayStation 5 revealed, great new PS5 games, and takeaways from today's PS5 showcases.

That’s a wrap! Today was an exciting day for gamers around the world, as the PlayStation 5 showcase granted us our first look at PS5 games under development… and culminated with the reveal of the PS5 system itself.

Actually, two PS5 systems.

PlayStation 5

At PS5’s launch, we will offer two options: a PlayStation®5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a PlayStation®5 Digital Edition without a disc drive. The PS5 gameplay experience will be the same, so the choice is all yours. While there are some slight differences in the look of each model, for the overall design, we wanted to deliver a console that’s bold, stunning, and unlike any previous generation of PlayStation.

PlayStation 5PlayStation 5

On the software side, the industry’s most talented developers unveiled a lineup of games that will define PS5 when it launches this holiday. Grand Theft Auto V started the party, revealing an expanded and enhanced edition due to hit PS5 in 2021.

PlayStation Studios also served up a massive buffet of extraordinary PlayStation 5 game reveals (read details here) totaling nine titles. It kicked off with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — the next chapter in the acclaimed partnership between the legendary studio and Marvel Games and is due out for PS5 this holiday. Insomniac also revealed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a galaxy-hopping new PS5 adventure in the fan-favorite Insomniac series.

Our friends at Guerrilla gave us a breathtaking first look at Horizon Forbidden West for PlayStation 5, a gorgeous new adventure set in a distant land ravaged by massive storms. And Polyphony Digital dropped by to unveil Gran Turismo 7 as The Real Driving Simulator prepares for a new generation of PlayStation hardware.

And I know you’re excited about Demon’s Souls, a gorgeous PS5 remake from Bluepoint Games and Japan Studio.

When creating a new console, it’s essential to invite bright, talented independent developers into the process early. And it was inspiring to see such a wide array of innovative new indie titles showcased. Let’s just list them out:

INDIES

  • Bugsnax from Young Horses
    • A whimsical, narrative-driven adventure from the creators of Octodad. Investigate the mysterious Snacktooth Island, home of the legendary half-bug, half-snack creatures.
  • Goodbye Volcano High from Ko_op
    • A cinematic narrative game that touches on love, friendship, and self-realization in the final days of civilization.
  • Jett: The Far Shore from Superbrothers + Pine Scented

  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits from Ember Lab
    • A story-driven action adventure game combining exploration and discovery with fast-paced combat.
  • Little Devil Inside from Neostream Interactive
    • Set in a “Victorian-like” era, embark on dangerous missions to gain evidence and findings for your employer, a mysterious professor.
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm from Oddworld Inhabitants
    • A major visual and cinematic lead for the celebrated series, with intelligent new gameplay mechanics and twisted new devices to enable explosive deviousness.
    • From Oddworld Inhabitants: “Oddworld: Soulstorm’s scope and scale are larger than we have tackled before. We plan to use PS5’s stunning graphic fidelity, mind-blowing 3D audio, and the DualSense controller to enhance our storytelling and artistic abilities to bring you closer to the game and to create an even deeper emotional Oddworld experience…”
  • The Pathless from Giant Squid / Annapurna
    • The mythic tale of an archer and an eagle in a vast forest who venture to a mystical island to dispel a curse of darkness.
  • Stray from BlueTwelve Studio / Annapurna
    • A little cat in a futuristic walled city, devoid of life, befriends a sentient drone. The cat must find its way home, and perhaps help the city along the way.
  • Solar Ash from Heart Machine / Annapurna
    • A journey through a surreal and vivid world filled with mystery, endearing characters, and massive enemy encounters across a vast open world.

THIRD-PARTY GAMES

PlayStation’s third-party partners also brought in some big new PS5 titles. Let’s take a look:

  • Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar Games
    • From Rockstar: “Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5 will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console’s powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever. Plus, a new standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online will be also available, free for three months exclusively on PlayStation 5.” (PlayStation Plus required for online multiplayer)
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo from Tango Gameworks / Bethesda Softworks
    • From Bethesda: “From Shinji Mikami and the team at Tango Gameworks comes Ghostwire: Tokyo, a next-gen action-adventure game coming to consoles exclusively for PlayStation 5 in 2021. Tango Gameworks has taken full advantage of the power of the PS5’s next-gen hardware to create a stunning, immersive, and mysterious world to experience. Explore the streets of a city filled with spirits and mysterious otherworldly threats, with an arsenal of powerful abilities at your command.”
  • Godfall from Counterplay Games
    • From Counterplay Games: “You are the last of the Valorian knights, god-like warriors able to equip Valorplates, legendary armor sets that transform wielders into unstoppable masters of melee combat. Players will tear through foes as they climb through some of the elemental realms…. We’re still hard at work and can’t wait for players to experience Godfall when it makes its console debut on PS5 and launches on PC this holiday season.”
  • Project Athia from Luminous Productions / Square Enix
    • “Project Athia is the culmination of our philosophy here at Luminous Productions to create completely new and fresh gaming experiences that fuse together the latest technologies with art. With the PS5, our vision truly comes to life, and with Project Athia players can look forward to being transported to a vast and detailed world filled with beauty and dismay.”
  • Hitman 3 from IO Interactive
    • From IO Interactive: “Hitman 3 is the dramatic conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy and will put you back into the shoes (and stylish suit) of Agent 47, a ruthless professional assassin who must take on the most important contracts of his career.”
  • NBA 2K21 from 2K Sports
    • 2K Sports stopped by to give us an eye-popping first look at pre-alpha PS5 development footage of NBA 2K21.
  • Deathloop from Arkane Studios / Bethesda Softworks
    • From Arkane Studios: “With stunning and stylish environments, memorable combat encounters, and the freedom to tackle each mission at any pace and with any approach you choose, this is Arkane like you’ve never seen (or felt) it before, built with next-gen in mind. Deathloop is being developed for a new generation of hardware and will launch on console exclusively for PlayStation 5.”
  • Resident Evil Village from Capcom
    • From Capcom: “…the fear of dark corners has been replaced with the anxiety of the unknown as Ethan searches for answers within decrepit buildings among snow-covered trees. The return of a first-person perspective will bring a visceral edge to combat… With a greater focus on combat and exploration compared to Resident Evil 7, the village itself is just as important a character as any other, a location with a life of its own that will frequently keep you on edge as you discover its secrets.”
  • Pragmata from Capcom
    • Capcom also gave us a first look at a thought-provoking PS5 game called Pragmata.
PlayStation 5

Phew! There’s a lot to look forward to this holiday. From all of us here at PlayStation, thanks for joining us on this PS5 journey. We’re incredibly excited about the next chapter, and we’ll have more details to share about PS5 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem as we close in on launch this holiday.

  • Considering that the internal SSD is very limited, is it possible to download PS5 games onto external hard drives, and swap them into internal SSD whenever I want to play them? It could be really convenient if we could download games (when Internet is available) onto an external 4TB / 6TB hard drive, and swap games we want to play (at somewhere without Internet) into internal SSD one by one.

  • Can we have forza n midnight club everybody waiting for the midnight club just saying….

  • I’m definitely getting the disc version. Getting digital only, prevents access to cheaper pre owned games or discounts from physical stores further down the line, just makes sense to keep to discs.

Also thought the conference and the console design itself were incredible.

  • wow!! Amazing, can’t wait for launch day.

  • I do hope that awesome looking charger will be included in the box.

  • Sony, please make a black 4K Blu-ray version for launch. Then I will be in!

White will not go well with the rest of my tech, so until then I will wait :’(

  • It’s simply beautiful. Day one for sure !

  • Xx_Benjaminho_xX

Exciting design👀🖤! Good job to the industrial design team! Maybe a little bit Inspired by alienware👽 and sw stormtroopers🤖💥 😎

Im curious bout the gui u guys designed as well. That short sneak peek looks sparkling nice and clean.

What bout the tech specs? What and how many of each connections it will got?

I won’t ask bout the pricing bc of all the others did b4. 😁😂

    Cheers
    Ben

  • AlisonPentouseus

    Thank you very much PlayStation.
The new playstation looks awesome !
    Well done !

  • Alpha_Elephant22

Definitely getting that disc included PS5

  • I really think it is a waste to have 2 consoles. Just make the one with the drive since it will be backwards compatible…..RIGHT SONY? SONY? *tap* *tap* *tap* ANYONE THERE?

Everything I need to know includes the price and release date ;)

    Ratchet and Clank!!!!!!!! Spider-Man 2!!!!!!!!!!

GTA V – can we PLEASE beat this dead horse many more times…thanx. GTA VI would have been nice but V is not needed due to BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY…..RIGHT SONY?

Depending on price and the backwards compatibility will decide if I buy one or not. I can always upgrade my computer and play the games down the road as they become “not exclusives” or else just switch to the MS camp.

  • You forgot to add Sackboy: A Big Adventure by Sumo Digital in this article.

Either way, this PS5 event was way better than I expected, a good balance of cartoony and realistic games. I’m really looking forward to getting the console later this year and I hope you will keep doing it during the PS5 gen.

  • This console is beautiful must have!!!!

  • I’m honestly really excited and can’t wait for the ps5 to hit the market.

  • I’m trying to become a YouTuber for kids and stuff… So can you guys add Roblox?

  • That is the worst looking console of all time. I’m so upset at this. There’s no way I’m going to keep that on my tv unit. Better to hide it so I don’t have to see it. I was hoping for a design similar to the 3 Slab beautiful PS4 Pro.

  • Loved the games line up. The console is breathtaking the design in something worth looking at. I would have liked to see Sid and Mark stop in just to say Hi. I am happy I can join you in the Future of Play, Thank You.

  • Hi,

My question is to technicians of Sony :)
Firstly, the design and features seems perfect,
    I see Ps5 supports 4k 120hz
    But I have 32″ 1440p 144hz QHD HDR Monitor. I’am curious that, will support PS5 to 2k 144hz~ ?
If won’t there is no point to buy Ps5 for me. Because 4k 120hz + monitors are too expensive..

  • At least now I know I won’t be getting one at launch.

  • Hi all,
Hope can put it on a shelf horizontal?
And sorry don’t like the white, looks cheap plastic to me.
Hope you bring it in store with an other (dark) color or black.
    Greetings from the Netherlands, Nijmegen👋🌷

  • Sony may you please add different color options for customers to be able to have more options and may you please release the prices, but anyways great icon!😀

  • Amazing presentation, well done Sony! It is taking me some time to get used to the look of the new console, however I’ve always planned on getting the slim and I do think it’s actually a really smart move to go for something really bold in design compared to the Xbox series X which is minimalist, therefore making it stand out even more.
My games of the presentation were ratchet and clank and astro bot.

  • Not bad the PS5 design looks nice, after that ugly controller clearly inspired by that abomination that starts with X I was afraid you’d go the same path with the system, glad y’all didn’t cuz it looks cool and sleek actually…just wish it was all black to follow the PS tradition since the PS2 that’s all but of course it wouldn’t be since the controller was white to begin with.

Was gonna wait until you show more details about how things gonna work on the PS5 but I’ll just start asking from now. Please tell me people on PS5 will be able to see their friends online playing on the PS3 and Vita. And you gotta make so the activities of PS4 appear on the activities of the PS5.

Also gonna release the PS5 and let the video record feature of the PS4 stay broken forever skipping videos by themselves?…also why did y’all remove our uploaded videos from being shown in the activities feed?…that’s just like you Sony.Bring that back and fix your stuff before thinking on PS5.

  • Overall, I wasn’t blown away by the show, but I was hoping we’d see a Demon’s Souls remake so I was happy about that, glad to finally see new Horizon in action, and I guess the Spidey add-on will be fun though I feel like I’ve played that game to death now. Other than that, Keno looks like decent fun – but could not care less about the rest includingGTA, Gran Turismo, and RE VIII.

What I really want? SOCOM 2 Remake.

  • Thank you Sony! That show was amazing! Greatness awaits Holiday 2020

  • PlaystationHome from PS3 that was later deleted should be brought back. The game was not under developed but was cancelled and it would serve as a great lobby for gamers to communicate with each other so please bring it back!

  • Yawn. I love PS, I have every Sony system from the PS1 to the PS4. This is a total letdown thus far. GTA V… again? That’s now on the PS3, PS4 and PS5. Demon’s souls — awesome, but it’s already available on the PS3 and I would argue it’s not really Demon’s Souls without some of the gameplay issues that will undoubtedly be ironed out in this PS5 release. Ratchet and Clank games are fun but that looks like, again, a PS3 game. TLoU2 trailer looked better than anything you showed, minus perhaps GT7.

Props on releasing a disc-less version though, physical media is dying and I was just saying the other day “Man, HD Bluray sure flopped.”

  • To be honest that looks unique at best but if your reading this SONY i do have a suggestion IF you’re making a PS5 PRO instead of just buffed up graphics and frame rate why not also make it fully backwards compatible for the entire PS1 PS2 PS3 and PS4 library PLEASE SONY it would mean the world to me if ya did

  • That was an incredible event. I just got done watching the trailers in 4K. Watching them compressed in YouTube I was already impressed. So i know I’d be blown away in 4k and I was.
I’m curious though, in your previous article there was a mention of watching the event with headphones. So I did using the ps platinums, I have a feeling that you guys were teasing your 3d audio tech from the ps5… am I right? I sure sounded like it ESPECIALLY during the ratchet & clank announcement and gameplay. Sounded amazing. So pumped and READY TO PREORDER ASAP

  • Absolutely love the design. I was not expecting to see the console and there it was, at the end of the show and it is an absolute beauty. looks like a slim version fo an Alienware PC. Really, when you put side to side the X-Fridge you can see the PS5 is something I would have under my TV.

  • Loving the new design, very futuristic. Had every console and can see no reason not to the get the PS5 after seeing this along with the specs, I guess it’s down to price.

What do we think….hmmmm about £450 and £400 digital? I’ll buy mine now :-)

  • No mention of backward compat with the PS3/2/X though. It was mentioned a while back but we’ve only heard of PS4 backward compat since.

  • Best console design ever.

  • Could you upload these pictures in fuller resolution? I don’t see them on your flickr account yet. Thank you.

  • Can you tell us how many USB conn on back of the console and does it have an optical out port?? Love the console and the games, great job!

  • Will we be able to play out PS4 games on the ps5

  • Why not two USB ports? I have never seen a cable with micro USB connectors on both ends, and it’s just a unnecessary nuisance.

  • The design is…different. I would be concerned about how they are going to dissipate all the heat that it will generate. The games look great but at this stage with the technology we have today games should look great. Need more details about heat dissipation and whether both systems can use external hard drives as games sizes will be high. Good presentation.

    • It has been stated that the ps5 has a fixed power input. This means the cooling will be able to handle any room temp and any game demand. They know exactly how cooling they need. The competition does not. Yes to external hard drives to play ps4 games.

  • Big fan of the design, gives off a futuristic vibe.

  • Given the official reveal of a digital only version, does this mean that a more open digital game sharing policy is in the works? Will ‘primary swapping’ for sharing still be a thing?
Great Reveal. Very excited for next gen!

  • So can anyone confirm if our Pro controllers from PS4, the wired USB ones, will be compatible with PS5?

  • Gracias Sony y PlayStation por darnos siempre klos mejores productos a los usuarios en este caso la ps5 que innova en todos los aspectos, y regalenme una jajajaja

  • I hope you include battlefield. I also hope you do something to accomodate for network latency. Its is not much fun to play games where others have an unfair advantage.

  • @shadowynd what kind of moron makes a video game console event into a racial issue? Thats right…..scum like you.

  • So Spiderman the “add-on” “upgrade” edition is that gonna be a full price game ? If I choose to stick with the PS4 edition ( that I own) and fire that up on PS5 is it gonna look all ray traced and as good as the add-on” “upgrade” edition released on ps5 ? can I buy the “add on” separate? What about other games say the Witcher 3 red dead gow batman or more obscure titles say ufc 3 they just gonna look same ? The devs gonna sell us them again, What about games closer to the time say Cyberpunk I buy that on ps4, will I have to purchase again like gta v on PS3/PS4?

  • That has to be the ugliest thing I’ve seen in years. I hope we can shuck it out of that skin and put in a computer case.

  • So people are questioning the value of a digital console when we have digital music and movies, plus no one complains about PCs and phones being digital only devices.
