Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Update Adds License Resets, Original Soundtrack, More

A new update for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age lands today -- just as the game goes 50% off for a limited time.

If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to dive back into the world of Ivalice, then we have some great news — a new update for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is releasing today.

It’s also just in time for today’s Big in Japan sale, which goes live later today, and in which the game is a massive 50% off! If you haven’t tried it, now’s the time, because the new patch brings some significant changes to the game — many of which have been highly requested by fans.

Here’s just a brief look at what’s being added:

You can now reset licenses

In Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, you assign each character in your party up to two licenses. Think of these as jobs – they define the role they’ll play in battle.

So for example, the dashing Balthier could deal out damage as a Knight, and soak it up with the big buff brawny Foebreaker license.

Or the noble Ashe could couple the destructive magic of a Black Mage with support spells of a Time Battlemage.

It’s an incredibly flexible system that gives you a lot of control – though fans had one issue with it. Once you had assigned a role to a character, you couldn’t reset it.

That’s not the case anymore. Simply head over to Rabanastre (the city where the game starts), and visit Montblanc, the leader of Clan Centurio. He’ll let you change your licenses, allowing you to re-spec characters and try out new combinations to your heart’s content!

You now have 3 Gambit sets

Another key part of Final Fantasy XII is setting Gambits. These allow you to set remarkably precise behaviors for your team in battle — if someone’s health drops to critical, cast a healing spell, or prioritize the strongest enemy in a fight and so on.

Experimenting with different Gambits is one of the most entertaining parts of the game, and now it’s even more convenient. You can set up to three sets of instructions, and switch between them at will.

That allows you to create team set-ups for different scenarios much more easily than before. Say, for example, your current tactics are focused on taking down mobs of enemies quickly. If you run into a powerful foe or boss, they may not be particularly effective.

Now, you can instantly switch to a new Gambit set-up — perhaps one that’s more focused on dealing damage to a specific target, or keeping the team on their feet. It means you can spend less time in menus, and more time focusing on exploration and overall battle strategy.

The original Final Fantasy XII OST is now available

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age features a fully re-orchestrated soundtrack — and it’s really quite wonderful in our opinion.

But we know some people prefer the original — that’s why The Zodiac Age lets you switch back to the original PS2 music if you prefer.

With the new patch, there’s now a third music option available for everyone — the original game’s OST. It hews close to the PS2 version, but with higher quality samples and different instrumentation in some cases.

You can switch between soundtracks in the menu, so take a listen and see which audio option you prefer. After all, there are no wrong answers here – they’re all great in their own way.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on sale

We hope you enjoy the additions to Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age — they make a great RPG even greater. • Great to see! Hopefully FFX can be update with the fast forward and other quality of life features as well!

    • 100% agree. FFX is one of my favorite Final Fantasy entries, but the non skippable cutscenes make it very difficult to play, especially for some of the more challenging fights late game.

I usually don’t recommend the game to people due to the long cutscenes. If that was skippable I would recommend it to everyone in a heartbeat.

    • And with 4k support for PS4 Pro. I believe FFX Remastered came out before the Pro.

  • Great to see this update finally. The locked licenses were a real pain and gave you less play options. The PS2 ost is also a nice option to have. I’ll pick this back up again after FFVIIR.

  • Thank you! That’s awesome! Great to know that the PS4 version gets some of the love the PC version has. Now just add 60fps and / or resolution boost on PS4 Pro and we can be completely happy!

    • Final Fantasy XII is one my favorite games to play but ever since this Zodiac Age I have hated playing it. I was hoping for the update that allows you to switch the version without the Jobs class because that is limiting.

  • That’s great! I hope you can update the PS4 version of DQ11 to include the extra features on the Switch version.

  • I’m still playing the game, but I haven’t seen an update yet, I even checked the update box. Hopefully it will be soon because I messed up with Fran and Penelo

  • Any chance we’ll end up getting the improved New game + option from the Switch and One as well? Right now we can only start a new game at level 90 or level 1 without our gear carrying over, whereas the switch and one can carry over their equipment.

    • Was wondering that m’self. Seems an odd omission, along with 60 FPS for PS4 Pro at least, unless that model really is so below Xbox One X and PCs to be incapable of handling a PS2 port?

  • Finally! One of the best games ever gets better. Thanks Square-Enix!

    • Having 3 sets of Gambits to switch from is game changing indeed! I could care less about switching jobs. I bought this version for the very reason that jobs are locked, lol

  • Final Fantasy XII is one my favorite games to play but ever since this Zodiac Age I have hated playing it. I was hoping for the update that allows you to switch the version without the Jobs class because that is limiting.

  • Can you guys remove the Job Class from Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age?

  • Thank you. Now please add the boosters, parameter changes and auto-save to the PS4 version of X/X-2 HD.

  • This article is slightly misleading. The Zodiac version of FFXII has had the Original, Reorchestrated, and OST music options available since its release. No new music options were added in this recent update.

  • I never saw a point to the restrictions with jobs in Zodiac Age since with the original PS2 version I still managed to put in over 200 hours

  • Whose bright idea was it to add licenses in the first place? Go back to the original set-up where every character could completely fill out the skill and equipment maps completely. I can deal without the OST, I want the original Skill options! Whoever made that decision should be fired. If I could have gotten a refund on the game because of that, I would have. Worst decision in FF ever. I’d rather play FF2 (Japanese) than play Zodiac Age again.

I completely agree with you!! Whoever came up with the idea to revamp the licenses to make “classes/jobs” characters was probably looking for an idea to add to his quota for the quarter. This has ruined the game for me. The original version of FFXII was the best game I ever played and wish I could play it in it’s original form on the PS4 or maybe PS5. I bought Zodiac Age thrilled that I could play my favorite in updated graphics and newer PS model. Boy did I hate myself for being so optimistic by the end of the first day. Zodiac Age was a total time and money sink! Square Enix please change this classic back to its amazing form and re-release it!!

  • Ito: One way to play the original game is to just become strong and barrel through; every character will get stronger if you just acquire every license from the starting point as you go. This isn’t what I had had in mind. I wanted people to choose this license and that one, with each of the six characters going in different directions. I wanted the players to worry about [which licenses to acquire] as they played, and develop their own styles. With the International version, I was determined to get players to experience that “flavor”, focusing on a different style for each player. Thinking about how to implement that, a different license board for each job seemed to be the best. I didn’t want to have a kind of [forgiving] “suspended sentence” system where players could make changes in midstream; I wanted to make it so that they couldn’t advance without making a decision at each point.

  • So freaking happy that they didn’t forget to give PS4 owners this… But I already got the platinum!
