Announcing the Play At Home Initiative

Stay safe and pick up Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free from April 15 through May 5.

People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID–19. We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home.

As a thank you to all who are doing their part to lessen the impact of this pandemic, Sony Interactive Entertainment is pleased to announce the Play At Home initiative.

Play At Home has two components: first, providing free games to help keep the PlayStation community entertained at home; and finally, establishing a fund to help smaller independent game studios who may be experiencing financial difficulties continue building great experiences for all gamers.

Free Games to Play At Home

To support Play At Home, PlayStation will try to make those occasionally dull moments more exciting by offering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey available for free* for a limited time through digital downloads from April 15 at 8pm PDT through May 5, 2020 at 8pm PDT Once you redeem the games, they are yours to keep.

For most of you, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will need no introduction. This three-game collection from the masters at Naughty Dog includes Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception—all meticulously remastered for PS4. We can’t imagine a better time for globe-trotting adventures with Nathan Drake, an iconic cast of characters, and thrilling treasure-hunting action gameplay.

Then there’s Journey, a beautiful, celebrated adventure that is as moving as it is mysterious. The game’s life-affirming message is timeless, and perhaps more important now than ever before.

In alignment with SIE’s goal in preserving Internet access in the US and Europe, game downloads may take a little longer, but we appreciate the understanding from our community as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.

Creative Funding

Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.

During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment. At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment. We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners.

*In Germany and China, users will have access to Knack 2 and Journey for free for a limited time (April 15, 2020 at 8pm PDT through May 5, 2020 at 8pm PDT).

  • Right on. The creative fund is huge. Part of why I love Sony is because of their partnerships with so many unique developers for independent games.

  • I want Knack 2

    • Then go buy it. Entitled much?

    • You just have to create a German or Chinese account. Simple like that.

    • Knack 2 babee!

    • An entitlement is a provision made in accordance with a legal framework of a society. Typically, entitlements are based on concepts of principle (“rights”) which are themselves based in concepts of social equality or enfranchisement.

In the 2000s, the meaning of the word has extended to encompass informal expectations of social relationships, social conventions and social norms which are considered unreasonable or unduly prescriptive upon others

      Investor: invest in brains.

    • me too

    • @loverdann One could say the same for you. You literally pulled a single definition out of numerous. Here’s one for you;

believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

To be clear, that use of the word is several CENTURIES old. Before you or someone else barks about its overuse, we actually track that. And we’ve tracked it back for as long as we’ve kept written record. To my point, it’s actually used in this manner about half as much as we did a century or two ago. The reason we tend to use it less is bc today we have no kings, cardinals, popes, et al, handing out undeserved position for personal gain.

Sony’s simply trying to do their part. Whether we have these games or not, they didn’t have to do this.

    • Nah, just gimme KNACK 3 for PS5!

    • Investor said “Entitled” you gave the definition of entitlement. Invest in a brain and learn to read.

    • @logix
Defintiion of Entitle (Entitled past tense)

to furnish with proper grounds for seeking or claiming something

… someone said something about brains?

    • for us account next games should be spiderman and knack 2 or spirit of the north

  • This is great! Maybe Sony can work with the Folding@Home guys again and port the client to the PS4 :)

  • Thanks! Great games!

  • Great initiative, would have loved to see some Vita tapes given away too

  • Oh that’s awesome. They’re offering 2 games that were already plus offerings in the past.

I’m already kind of disappointed 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • Okay, way to complain about free games for everyone, not just PS+.

    • Millions of ps4’s get sold every year, the people that havent played it, have a chance to play it now

    • Agreed. Idc about other people that are late to the party. Ps plus got the collection THIS YEAR

    • Punkboy1945, you sound like a spoiled-self entitled bratty child. It’s people like you, and the OC, that make this community look so toxic. They don’t have to do anything. They could have just sat there. But they didn’t.

    • I was really annoyed with myself because I missed the chance to get the Nathan drake collection when it was free and a few days ago was thinking about if I should buy it and then they announced this so for people like me this is great, don’t be annoyed, they didn’t announce this until now so it’s not like you were excited to get free games then they were something you didn’t want

    • How about something extra for ps+ subscribers as we already have the uncharted series.

    • How about you Guys stop being a bunch of idiots and get his point. Those that own a PS4 more then likely own PS+ and have already grabbed these Games for Free.

Which makes this whole initiative that Sony is trying to pull mute, they are better off handing something out they haven’t handed out yet for free to reach a much bigger audience.

Sony owns plenty of IP’s that cost the same as the Uncharted Collection and that they haven’t handed out yet.

God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone: Shadowfall etc…

    • Ravanofdarkness, there is no point to get:

The fact is that of the 102 million ps4 consoles that have been sold, the amount of ps + subscribers amounts to 38.8 million according to 2020 figures. Supposedly 37% of ps4 owners are ps + subscribers.

That means up to 63.2 million people could benefit from at least one free game. I am a ps+ subscriber myself, but this is obviously intended for those who can’t afford 60dls a year.

Many of your fellow ps4 owners have to work very hard to get the console and games, and many parents make a very real effort to get one for their kids because they want to give them a a treat. For some kids it’s actually a smal miracle to get one.

Again, you’re still receiving what you paid for, this is not for you.

The financial situation for a lot of people was tough before any of this happened, so you could imagine how hard it must be right now.

Maybe try to think of someone other than yourself. Or do you
guys also want a cut of the 10 million relief fund for struggling indie devs.

Sorry to be so direct, but anyone complaining could use a bit of humility.

    • Any other games besides third person? Need for Speed? Just bought Dirt4 and Dirt2.0

    • @Ravanofdarkness Firstly, for you to come out of the gate calling people idiots kind of makes you, well, an idiot. Try to see beyond yourself, eh? Secondly, it’s MOOT, not MUTE. Your intention is to say it is pointless, your words say it’s rendered silent.

  • How do you access the free games? I searched them up on the store and they still cost money.

  • What about if we got it on plus and plus expires? We will own them for ever? :/

    • Same question! I know some games I got through plus that I want to own forever but can’t even pay to keep them. Trying to support some devs too.

    • They’re for everyone, not just for PS plus members.

    • Exprosin, that’s not what the question is about. Those of us who have the Nathan Drake Collection or Journey through PS Plus cannot redeem this free-to-keep offer because we have them already through Plus, so they’ll expire when our Plus expires.

    • As long as your subscribed then yea if not you won’t able to access them unit you have PlayStation plus

    • You likely would need to contact customer support and have them remove your existing licenses for those games so you can “obtain” them again with this new license.

This has been the process for the rare events in which stuff like this happens with pre-existing license conflicts.

It’s really up to you if you want to try to contact support (which is tougher now due to COVID-19) and see if they can do that for you.

  • Will these be ours to keep if we already downloaded them as ps plus free games? Will they still be ours if our membership expires?

  • You really should have given us codes or PSN credit and let us pick games ourselves.
Doling out games that are already in the Instant Game Collection doesn’t do much for people that have PS+ and those selected games already.

    • maybe but in part it sounds like these were volunteered by the developers, not Sony. Which is probably why it’s these specific games. otherwise Sony still has to compensate the developers for the downloads. Not that that would be a huge deal to them but if the developers are already offering then this was probably easier.

    • So what you think they were going to give you Ghost of Tsushima or Cyberpunk 2077‽ 😂😂😂

    • Giving PSN credit (even 10$) would mean giving away 1 billion $. Giving these two games probably costs them nothing and is a nice gesture.

    • Whatever Sony paid for these two games could have been sent as credit or discount and let people pick games they wanted. This cost them something. I am saying that “something” could have been distributed a different way and allowed a game choice.

Did I expect Ghost of Tsuchima for free? If you read that from my post then you need help.

    • You really shouldn’t complain about free games and a $10mil fund for game developers.

    • You should really create your own game console company and start giving out free stuff yourself since you seem to be so entitled and its so easy .. why can’t people like you shut the hell up and be grateful that Sony is even thinking of us right now . They have their own families and friends too worry about too ..not just snot nosed spoiled brats like you , at work .

    • Uncharted is developed by Naughty Dog which is owned by Sony. Additionally, Sony contracted with “That Game Company” to develop Journey, Flow, and Flower, so those games are also owned by Sony (don’t believe me, check the copyright).

Anyone thinking that Sony is paying some developer for the rights to distribute these games for free is mistaken. Sony owns these games and Sony has already made a profit from them (and has likely milked these cows dry). As such giving them away is not a big deal for Sony. It is just a way for Sony to appear generous.

As such, giving everyone a PSN credit would be comparatively very costly.

    • you do know that the total amount of ps plus subscribers (PS3 and PS4) is still only like 1/3 of the PS4 install base meaning that most people haven’t even touched these yet

    • @ arlimand – Sony own these games…devs have no say here.

    • You just sound like a selfish B.

    • Wow the amount of childish behavior and entitlement is astounding😑,SMH

  • I’m always impressed how SONY supports independent developers. Excellent plan.

  • Can’t we get for some more days

  • Can’t we get it for some more days. It will take about a month to fully complete this game

  • Indie developers need help in this hard times and I’m glad Sony is stepping forward with the Creative Fund to aid them. I’m glad you’re doing the right thing!

    • Great that studios can get the help they need.

      Both games were on PS+.

Many non PS+ subscribers (2016+) can enjoy those 2 games.

  • Sony you must explain why it is impossible to release the last of us 2 a game that was supposed to be in febreaury, but it is perfectly fine to release ghost of tsushima. The pandemic only exists as an excuse to not release the last of us? You liar. I hope you broke.

    • Sony doesn’t have to explain anything, you pleb. You are not a shareholder, or any part of the company. You have not lost money, they owe you nothing.

“The pandemic only exists as an excuse….” That is literally the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Switch to XBox

    • Nicobadumbazz!!

    • dude tlou 2 isn’t even finished yet and either way probably would come out in may and ghost of tsushima coming out month later would kill its sales

  • Already played all of the Uncharted games but I never played Journey

    • same here, but I think the uncharted series is always worth the replay! it’s one of my favorites

    • justzajda I’m Stuck On The First Uncharted Game On The PS3. I’m Im A Room Full Of Water And I Can’t Figure Out How To Get To The Other Side At All.

    • Juggalomaster I believe there is a ledge to grab on one of the walls in that room. It should be sticking out. If you can’t see it then go to the upper ground and look closely around the room by zooming in (up on the dpad). I know this because i was stuck myself and it took me a while lmao

  • Good job Sony! Thanks

  • Sounds like a real treat.

  • I dont what come off as a a hole but don’t most people all ready have those 2 games. I know i own both all ready? I kinda wish we the players got to pick one

    • The main concern is if they actually are taking the time to unlock the games for ps+ members.
Ps+ members already “own” those games so we cannot access them to purchase again.

  • Great

  • How to add them if I already “own” them through PLUS ???

  • Sony should address what everyone wants to know, how to get the forever if we can’t get them as we have them with Plus.

    • Not sure but maybe you can download IT from a non plus account? Like creating another account cause it doesn’t seem possible to get the game from a plus account if it has already been downloaded

  • Thank you Sony!

  • Tq..#staysafestayhome

  • Great, eager to play Journey.

  • Awesome news. I’ll definitely be getting these games.

  • Would have been nice to have a choice between Knack 2 and Uncharted, but I appreciate the gesture nonetheless.

  • how can i claim these 2 games currently i am away from my console and haven’t logged in console
is there any way claiming the games without console or on can i claim on browser instead?

  • Im Glad they’re helping out. Bit Uncharted? Weve had unchsrted for PS Plus for 2 months now… Everyone owns it. But anyone who doesn’t have PS Plus well congrats.

  • Thanks really thanks PS, this iniciative is amazing for players and indie devs

  • Lmao what if u r stuck in quarantine w/ a Ps3. IDK but an Uncharted Game would be good. Or at least The Last of Us (thanks)

    • The PS5 is coming out this year and you still got a PS3

    • I Still Have A PS3 Trying To Work On Getting A PS4 But When The PS5 Comes Out For Pre-Order I’m Planning On Putting A Down Payment On It And Then Make Some Payments Until I Have It Completely Paid Off Before It Comes Out At Least That’s My Plan That Is

    • Journey was cross-buy back when I got it on PS4, so you might get it on PS3 when you claim the games when they go free tomorrow.

    • Thanks so much SONY! :)

What the next Free 2 games will be from May 5th?

because from my standpoint I really want Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian

  • To everybody that struggles to read and comprehend basic english .

    1) The games are available **WEDNESDAY** 15 until May 5 .

    2) They are **FREE** to you once you have purchased them , they will never be taken off you .

    3) Sony did not have to do this , but they did because they love gaming .

    4) Enjoy and be grateful .

    • Exactly, even during a worldwide crisis people are still entitled and ungrateful

    • Yea i dont take kindly to being screwed over multiple times in the past few months. You dont already own those? Well you SHOULD. cuz you SHOULD have plus. They didnt have to give away free games. They ALSO didnt have to screw over every PS Plus member who honestly? Deserve games THEY dont have cuz we PAY extra. You wouldve all been JUST FINE if they were ANY games but the majority of us get nothing. And thats unfair.

    • Qhat if you have a ps3 will the games also be available on ps3

    • No. Not available on ps3

    • 2) They are **FREE** to you once you have purchased them , they will never be taken off you .

When you say purchase free games, what do you mean?
Do you mean, you have to click purchase to get them for free? & You then own them forever?

    • Do U Have To Have A PS4 To Be Able To Download Them???

    • Yes I have ps4

    • I’m sure PS4+ members will get their two free games on top of it as well. So I don’t see why people are complaining.

  • I’d say more people have plus than don’t.so giving away uncharted is stupid

    • Journey is too. Got that free for ps plus as well. Just another big **** you to all the people who PAY

    • That is false. There are less than 40 million PS+ subscribers. There have been 108 million PS4s sold. So not even half of those who own a PS4 have PS+

    • Mercenary you do realize that some people have bought more than one PS4 right? So I would say it’s more like half at least.

  • how about a stay at home initiative of putting your servers back to full strength that would be better gaming isnt taking the bandwidth netflix and all those guys are love lagging in every game i play now stuck to solo games till this all blows over

  • So if i download Uncharted collection it will be mine forever?!! and how i can find this support Play at home?!!

  • Anyone wanna play fortnite? 🥺
    👉👈

  • both already on PS+, WTF?

    • But it’s now uncharted 4 and when we saved this collection on our library on PS4 it will be stay forever and for those people they didn’t own any games or didn’t play this game yet

  • Drake collection is PS4 only but will there be something for PS3? I’m stuck with a PS3 and some new free games would be great, especially Uncharted 2 since i loved first one but still dont have second one. And Journey would be really nice

    • Considering they’ve stopped support for many things like the messaging system on the ps3 that’s gonna be a big nope.

    • They did not stop support for the messaging system. They simply changed it so that ps3s can only receive and send messages to othe ps3s and not ps4s or handhelds. Get learnt

  • Ok so…. I get that its free for everyone…. But really Sony? You just screwed over EVERY ps plus member. So why dont you guys fix that and drop 2 more games for the ps plus members you so blatantly excluded in this decision? Not to mention this is the second time in 2 months you guys have screwed over ps plus members in NA…. Pick up the ball

    • Entitled much? They don’t owe you anything

    • Im not entitled at all. Im just saying they keep screwing over their MEMBERS. They didnt owe you anything either so why cant they make a decision EVERYONE can benefit from? You see, you might lack reasoning if you think im saying they OWE ME. what they owe is to themselves. And thoughtless decisions like this are only going to hurt Sony

    • And im just gonna assume you arent a ps plus member. You are welcome. My membership along with everyone elses is probably where the funds come from to support this

    • Sorry punkboy1945, but you are extremely entitled. How did they screw you over? You pay for PlayStation Plus, which includes online multiplayer, 2 predetermined monthly game rentals that you keep as long as a member, and extra sale discounts. Did you not receive that this month? If you are a PlayStation Plus, you did. So you got exactly what was advertised and paid for. There is nothing in the advertising nor the PlayStation Plus terms of service that says that these games will never be given for free to anyone else under any circumstances, or that games that receive an extra discount with Plus would never go on sale for a similar or lower price without plus at a future date.

I am a PlayStation Plus subscriber as well. I already own the Uncharted Collection, Journey, and Uncharted 4. So between all 4 of the PlayStation Plus/Stay at Home Initiative games, I only get 1. Am I a little bummed? Certainly. Do you going around thinking and whining that Sony “screwed me over”? No. Because I’m not an immature entitled individual.

    • Also, you think that PS+ subscriptions are paying for this? You do realize that Sony owns the rights to both of these games, right? Likely the only thing this is costing them at all are lost revenue on potentially lost future sales of the games (not much) and also bandwidth cost for everyone that redeems and downloads them (also not much).

    • Can ALL of you STFU!

    • entitled much?

  • Another reason why Sony is top notch in the game world!

  • I’m going to get that those who have it through Plus still have to do something to acquire it permanently, right?

  • What if we just bought the uncharted collection for $20 two days ago and have already played it? no chance of a refund?

  • Hello Jim and the entire Playstation community!

I just wanted to say, we appreciate everything you guys do to keep us entertained, im honored to be a Playstation gamer and even before that a Sony loyalist. To everyone out there, developers including the likes of Naughty Dog, your lives are more important than anything else and I commend anyone who needs to continue working wether it be the nurses and doctors on the frontlines or simply those that need to put food on the table. I dont think enough people realize how much entertainment like video games have become quite essential during these hard times. Thank you for all the good times and may God be with you!

  • Seems like Sony needs to give Plus members a free game then since we paid for uncharted this year already.

    • The more I think about this the more it ticks me off. It came bundled with the PS4 and then it was given away with Plus in January. Honestly this comes off more like a pathetic propaganda piece than a true attempt to help keep people inside. Maybe a pick a free game out of these 20 offerings.

    • They really don’t owe ps+ members anything.

They could have not done any of this period, it’s still a good way for more people to enjoy the Uncharted series.

  • Is there anything being done for the PlayStation Plus subscribers that already have these games?

    • Well they are laughing at us. Don’t expect a reply here. They stopped that years ago.

    • dear sony boss please Give us 50$ credit so we can buy any game we want 👍 thankyou

  • How about giving away something that hasn’t already been on PlayStation plus multiple times. Not to mention free with the purchase of a PS4.

  • Thanks for the games! 👍 If you really want to keep us home release the last NCAA football and basketball games. Well that would keep me at home anyway, and you can’t blame me for trying since they’d be free it wouldn’t break any rules. 😜😂

  • SONY YOU CANCELLED THE LAST OF US 2 GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK RIGHT NOW 70 DOLLARS I PAID FOR THE GAME THAT NEVER EXISTED. I DEMAND YOU TO GIVE ME MY MONEY. IS HAS BEEN OVER A WEEK SINCE YOU CANCELLED IT. WHERE IS MY MONEY? BESIDES LYING NOW YOU ARE STEALONG MONEY?

    • It was delayed not canceled and they already said they are refunding preorders but you have to contact them for the refund.

    • Why would you pay for a game that doesn’t exist? I don’t understand the whole pre-order thing, you are just giving your money away. Just wait until release to buy it, or at least “pre-order” it the day before it releases.

    • Dammit, some people are such whiners…

    • LOL you paid for a game that doesn’t exist yet, and you want that money back because that game doesn’t exist yet?

Also, they ARE giving refunds. The game will come out after all this pandemia thing is gone.

    • Fourteen-year-olds need to learn to turn off CAPS LOCK.
