Polls Open: PlayStation.Blog Game of the Decade

Ten years. Unforgettable games. One very difficult decision.

Choosing your favorite game of the year is always difficult. You may have a frontrunner and a few others that really leapt out at you, but truly determining which was your flat-out favorite? The one you’d hang your hat on for a given year? Tough stuff.

Welp, get ready for an even more challenging decision — choosing a game that stood above the rest for the entire decade. Gaze in despair at the list of absolute monsters below and try to narrow it down to only one.

It’s impossible! And that’s why our first-ever Game of the Decade poll allows you to choose three games, in no particular order, as your favorites. Don’t see your preferred game below? Write it in at the bottom of the poll and we’ll be sure to make note of it.

When voting ends on January 5, we’ll tally the votes and see which games walk away with Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards. We have some guesses as to the winners, but truth be told this was such a strong decade that there’s no way to really predict those top entries.

Better get started!

  • So many amazing games over the last decade, hard to decide. Going to have to go with Dark Souls.

  • Dragon Quest easily, why? Because it’s the last bastion of real rpgs.

  • My Picks in Order (Couldn’t do just 3)

  • I can’t believe Bastion is included in the list, but Transistor isn’t. Such a shame.

    Anyway, my votes were:
    The Last of Us
    Red Dead Redemption
    Transistor

Would have added God of War if it were to pick 4… but oh well.

  • Where’s the link for voting?

  • Definitely have to mention mention Skyrim. I STILL am playing that and I had it launch day. So many games influenced by it as well. It’s a masterpiece.

  • GoW 3, Bloodborne and Skyrim VR to me.

and yes, we need both Dark Souls and God of War in VR.

  • This is literally the worst decision. How can you make me choose just 3!? I feel like I’m betraying all my favorite games :(
I chose TLOU, Bloodborne and P4G but I feel terrible for leaving out so many other games :(

  • I vote for Caravan Stories anf i also love Toukiden 2 ☺

  • I’m going with Skyrim. It came out in 2013 and a bunch of people are still playing it.

  • medieivl as the best demo, it was the acomplisthment of sony… wonder for the growth of playstation. in as hero of sony…

  • Destiny one hands down my favorite game of the last decade.
I agree it’s not the best game but I can’t remember having better game moments, made friends, did things I’ve never done before in any other game, trials of Osiris, and played it for 4 years putting in the most hours I have ever done in one game.

  • The Last of Us
    TES V: Skyrim
    Little Big Planet 2

One showed me my love for story driven games.

One made me feel like the adventurer of my childhood dreams.

One taught me creativity and heart

  • The listing of games here is odd. Gravity Rush is an amazing series, but it wasn’t supported heavily by SIE, and it didn’t make PlayStation Hits, yet its listed here. But Dying Light, which sold multi-millions and has the PlayStation Hits label on it, isn’t anywhere on this list. Sure it’s not a PlayStation exclusive, but this list has plenty of non-PlayStation exclusives, so it’s really weird, especially with the constant patches and post launch support this game has been getting (on PS4) since 2015. Next, while The Walking Dead is fairly popular as far as both tv and games go, i’m surprised it’s listed here too, especially with Life is Strange on the list. Seems like the type of game that would be omitted here, but i’m really just going to assume the first season’s impact and complete success is why it made the list, rather than because the whole series is great <_<. But it is deserving here.

That said, i'm immensely glad to see both Gravity Rush games listed and The Walking Dead.

But dear lord is this hard. Top 3 for a decade of games…

    1. Dying Light – This game very impressively managed to separate itself from multiple top zombie franchises like Dead Island, Day Z, and Left 4 Dead with its revolutionary parkour system, somehow beating Mirror Edge's despite that game's entire focus on that component, and a quality over quantity approach with its openworld, a mentality recently claimed in an article by the developers to be maintained in next year's sequel. There are so many positive and impressive things that can be said this game does I get burnt out just thinking about it.

This is entirely deserved for what it's done to the zombie genre, rather than sticking to the same overused or safe elements, unlike Days Gone (outside its weather system) but moreso The Last of Us. The Last of Us is especially overrated, as from the perspective of video games, strong narrative in a zombie infested post apocalypse world doesn't beat strong and genre evolving gameplay in a zombie infested post apocalypse world.

    2. and 3. are more complicated, but i'm so sorry Dead Space 2, Dead Space 3 (lesser), Alien Isolation, The Forest, Until Dawn, Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Heavy Rain, Detroit Become Human, Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3(?), Mad Max, Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, inFAMOUS 2, ModNation Racers, Bloodborne, Portal 2, Jak and Daxter HD Collection (which I can't believe i'm not listing), and Horizon Zero Dawn (also can't believe i'm not listing).

  • my top 3 for the decade hands down are Bloodborne, Last of Us, and the Witcher

  • Dark Souls, Bloodborne and New Vegas. Alternatively switch BB with RDR2.

  • 1. The old Star Wars Battlefront 2, but since it says decade I will mention the new BF2 since I happen to really enjoy it and it’s improving.

    2. Monster Hunter World, simply amazing, love everything about it.

    3. Xcom 2, never have I thought I would enjoy turn-based games until I played Xcom.

    • X-Com 2 was a huge and pleasant surprise for me too. It was my first time playing a game that was anything like it.

  • strange list but I get it it’s playstation.com…

last of us and uncharted4 are easy picks
detroit was a bit harder to choose as there are so many equally great games on the list….

  • cool, that the Resistance trilogy’s not been mentioned.
Resistance Fall of man was one of the launch titles for the PS3

  • My three choices for Game of the Decade are The Witness, No Man’s Sky, and The Last Guardian. What a decade it has been!

  • Voted Last of US. Didn’t even need two other votes. If Last of Us fails, the community fails.

    • If it fails the community in actuality truly succeeds, actually. The Last of Us isn’t innovative or revolutionary. It doesn’t do anything new or pushes the gaming industry (the gaming part) forward. It’s not Shadow of the Colossus, it’s not Dead Space, it’s not Demon/Dark Souls, etc. Without its strong narrative, the game is entirely mediocre. What game deservs this award for stripping away the one feature that doesn’t actual define the gaming platform? At least in point and click/interactive drama games like The Walking Dead and Detroit Become Human, respectively, the point of those games are to focus on mostly strong narrative, but The Last of Us is not that; it’s a third person shooter, survival-horror game. As a video game and survival-horror, it’s among the weakest of its kind. It didn’t pioneer or help popularize the survival-horror genre like Resident Evil did; it doesn’t have the innovative and engaging dismember system that Dead Space introduced; it doesn’t have the innovative and genre evolving parkour system that Dying Light introduced; etc.

Otherwise, what games you think help put the gaming industry in this state currently that have many people claiming all AAA games look and play too “samey”?

I’m not voting a third person shooter, survival-horror… video game… top 3 best games of the decade for having average gameplay at best carried heavily by strong narrative, characterization, and character development (which only applies to really the two MCs). There are games out there that have managed all of that along with great or innovative gameplay

    • You act as if TLoU didn’t influenced a load of games since it’s success. You think the focus on narrative driven games we see today didn’t come from TLoU?…how about the amount of games that were made in the concept of adults taking care of a child after TLoU did?…and are you saying that lame point n’ click games like the telltale games have better writing than TLoU?…of course you are with that avatar LMAO.TLoU was innovative in a single thing…spectacular writing never seen before in a game…and that was followed by ND’s flawless gameplay.I’m sorry if you don’t realize this but playing a game that has a really good story is completely different than playing a game that has the story as an excuse. You say without the narrative it’s entirely mediocre?…haha what about the tech?…top notch animations, physics and best character models ever of it’s time…tech that even multiplat PS4 games strived to achieve in the beginning, that doesn’t count?…flawless gameplay doesn’t count?…guess cuz your telltale games have poor tech and no gameplay at all since all you gotta do is click and watch then you think those things aren’t important right?…the details don’t count too?…soundtrack?…guess not lol.Average gameplay haha a telltale fan talking about average gameplay, the irony…if you think ND’s gameplay are average well then you know nothing about gameplay.Laughable…your nonsence about TLoU is laughable.

    • I forgot perfect voice acting but whatever…I regret scrolling up and reading the comments.

    • Honestly, your post is ignorant and flawed. Got any actual support for that? No, you don’t. I can actually name games some of my favorite franchises have inspired, with actual evidence. There have been a lot of strong story driven games since pre-2010. In terms of narrative, games like Heavy Rain and The Walking Dead already created this impact a decade ago, even before those games as well. TLOU having a good story vs not having an excuse story doesn’t matter at all, as again games have already started doing this a very long time ago. TLOU did not pioneer story driven games or ones with strong narrative, so stop acting like it did. And if anything, all the TLOU’s timeskips hurts the narrative quality, as they’re used to conveniently make the writing easier rather than it’d be in one continuous stream, hurting the immersion and consistency. Uncharted 3’s narrative was criticized for a similar thing. TLOU’s gameplay is not great, period. It’s just well designed for what it is, but it’s not praise-worthy to an extent as if it was innovative or among one of the best gameplay systems ever crafted in a video game. Good tech matters in a video game, but once again not to the extent you’re arguing. If tech (physics, animation, character models, etc) matter THAT much, then games like inFAMOUS Second Son, The Order: 1886, Killzone Shadow Fall, and many other games would have sold and got rated better than they did. You really need to stop bashing Telltale games when ND’s games aren’t far behind, due to their high scripting and hand holding elements. Gameplay mechanics like melee combat in ND series (Uncharted, TLOU) consist of nothing but mindless square mashing. Outside, some, puzzles there is nothing complex about ND’s gameplay in general, whether it be climbing, platforming, shooting, etc. Imagine unintelligibly praising gameplay because it’s highly scripted and well animated while being so, rather than because it’s unique and has a lot of depth. The difference with other games that are scripted in areas of gameplay is that there still manages to be a level of skill and/or depth actually involved. Being as how this is the (action) video game industry, gameplay matters just about over everything. It doesn’t matter what TLOU does well in other non-gameplay related areas if the gameplay isn’t that good; it’s going to drag the game down a lot. There’s not much depth in the gameplay, nothing is innovative, it’s not as fun as shooting in sci-fi shooters (Resistance, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Ratchet & Clank, etc)… it’s all just sub-par or average, same for stealth. That’s without mentioning those bad padded sections with the wooden pallets and ladders. The a.i. is massively flawed, as is commonly known. You can’t put the mere two opposing factions against each other (even though it’s only a simple 2), something you can actually do in games like Dying Light and Dishonored with their differing enemy types. Factions Mp is unbalanced (things like bomb expert 3 + shiv is disgusting, over-powered Tactical shotgun, etc) and has pay to win elements (guns/perks locked behind paywalls in the real-world). And I can go on. TLOU is a perfect example of an overrated video game, period, between its fundamental issues, online issues, plethora of bugs (which for some reason haven’t been fixed), a couple but major outdated designs, and mediocre gameplay that simply just looks cool due to competent animation work. If TLOU has the best gameplay, then where the heck does games like Bloodborne, NieR: Automata, Sekiro, Marvel Spider-Man, Nioh, Monster Hunter, God of War, Dishonored, and other similar games stand?? ND’s games have little agency and are highly scripted, so their gameplay is objectively not that good by nature of its limited design.. Your actions don’t impact or change the world around you to any extent, there’s a lack of depth and skill required via combative sections and non-combative sections, gameplay mechanics don’t compliment each other in spectacular ways, etc. You look like a casual gamer who thinks he knows what good gameplay is when he actually utterly doesn’t.

As for your red-herring/strawman argument with The Walking Dead, no I didn’t say it has better writing. Though it was impressive and had a strong impact when it released, even despite its zombie apocalyptic setting. You coming to these false and delusional conclusions because of the character in my avatar, is pathetic. The series does have gameplay (unlike visual novels), whether you like it or not, and The Final Season took it to a whole different level within this genre, with it having true gameplay sections where the player has full 3D control over the character and the aiming. Don’t even think Life is Strange 2 does that. I love how silly your argument is.. Somehow, a Telltale fan only plays point and click/graphic adventure games, because it’s impossible for them to be diverse and explore numerous game genres, according to you. That’s something that’s actually laughable.

  • Nice poll, was fun to go through. So many great games but for me it’s Nioh, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2.

  • Can’t believe they have Battlefields 4, 1, and V but not the one that launched the whole decade…Battlefield 3 was by far the standard setter and it’s not even listed!

  • Bloodborne, God of War (2018), Persona 5

  • I voted for AC Unity.

  • I picked horizon it was a great game. Lots of great games on that list but some are games myself I wouldnt of played.

  • I voted Horizon, God of War 2018, and Dragon Quest XI. Would have voted for Beyond Two Souls, but didn’t want to be bothered writing it in.

  • How was Massive Action Game (M.A.G) not on this list? After all these years we have been begging for a re-release. We even started multiple kickstarters and been send cease and desist orders from sony. So all we get is ignored. Maybe if you marketed the game better it would have been bigger. Everyone I know who played that game still considers it to be the GOAT of shooting games. Myself and my 3000 hrs included. There will never be another M.A.G and if there is dont change any mechanics please god. M.A.G was ahead of its time and shown zero respect.

  • Last of Us & God of War 2018. Pretty easy actually

  • Last of us, elder scrolls Skyrim, and dark souls for sure and divinity 2 was a very close 4th.

Diablo 3 – 4 player couch perfection. Family put so many hours into tat game.

  • For the PS5 release. It will need 2 SKUs.

One with 24Gb of Ram, the other 32Gb of Ram.

    Aim for the 400$, 500$.

Have 500Gb or 1Tb SSD to aim for making a cheaper SKU.

External SSDs capable and Internal additional slots to add more NVMe SSD. Additional slots for Ram and DDR4 Rams to boost CPU “and GPU” with GDDR6.

Your competition will have upgradeable part, so should you.
Just don’t be that thick… It needs to fit horizontally in a TV Cabinet…

  • God of War
    The Witcher 3
