Get an early glimpse of next year’s action epic with the open beta starting next week, while pre-orders go live today.

Hello everyone I’m Fumihiko Yasuda, the producer for Nioh 2. I’d like to share some incredibly exciting news with you all! First and foremost, I’m happy to finally announce our launch date of March 13, 2020.

I know many of you have been waiting and we thank you for your patience while we worked to set an official date. One of the primary reasons for not rushing to set a launch date was to ensure that we can achieve a “genuine evolution” from Nioh, which to us meant that we needed to bring in fresh new elements while retaining the things that we felt were right from the first game. Although there weren’t enough significant changes in the Alpha, we now feel that we have come much closer to reaching our goals.

Open Beta Details

With that being said, we would also like to give you guys a sneak peek at the game by releasing an open beta demo for you to try out. This open beta will be available from November 1-10 and is downloadable from PlayStation Store. All players will be able to experience new elements such as our extensive character customization feature, our newest weapon- the Switchglaive, and so much more.

As you begin the beta, you will enter into a place called the Interim. Unlike the dojo tutorial from the previous game, the Interim is a safe zone where you will be able to choose your weapons, test out the basic moves and transition to a real stage when you are ready.

This place was designed and based on the Tibetan Buddhist concept of intermediate, transitional state between life and death. I’m actually very fond of the environment we created which is modeled after the Sanzu river surrounded in tranquility (similar to the river Styx from Greek mythology).

As you move on from the Interim, you will start your journey in a stage called Sunomata. This stage is based on the Sunomata castle which by some accounts was constructed in just one night by Hideyoshi. The experience will be an interpretation of historical actualities combined with a healthy injection of Yokai adventure!

In addition, this new stage will treat you to an impressive environment covered in autumn maple leaves. In a similar fashion to the cherry blossoms stage (The Village of Cursed Blossoms), we had the great fortune of highlighting another stunning time of year within Japan’s four distinct seasons.

I hope that you will enjoy this stage and the open beta in November. If you are skilled and fortunate enough to conquer the beta, you will earn The Mark of the Demon Slayer – a reward entitling you to unlock the Kamaitachi Helmet from the in-game Shrine to use in the full game when it arrives next year. Although the trial time is limited, we sincerely hope that you can play the beta and provide your invaluable feedback to us by responding to the survey.

Pre-orders Start Today

Also at this time you will be able to pre-order Nioh 2 from PlayStation Store, which will award you with valuable bonus items to use with the final game. For those of you who are new to Nioh, and want to discover the world around it, the original game will be available for free to PlayStation Plus members on November 5. As for the seasoned veterans, kindly guide the newcomers with your battle hardened skills.

As the development enters into its final phase, we will be busy with debug, rebalance, debug, rebalance… All kidding aside, I’m anxious for you guys to play the Beta and we very much look forward to your feedback so that we can properly finalize Nioh 2. Thank you for your support!

  • Good to have a release date. Can’t wait to see how Nioh 2 has evolved from the original.

    Please do a 4K remake Ninja Gaiden collection ala Uncharted PS4 collection, with updated controls and everything. Us NG fans really want it!

  • Loved the first game, got the platinum, one of the toughests, so I’m ready for the next challenge!

    • even completed 100% trophies, include all DLC, I think it’s only about 1/3 of Nioh
      complete Nioh totally if y loved it

  • This is a great purchase right before Cyberpunk 2077. What a crazy last year before the next Gen Consoles release.

  • Glad about the beta,thank you for it…it’s a really great surprise since I don’t wanna get engaged in any game so close to Death Stranding’s release…will definitely try the beta like I did some years ago with Nioh 1.

    But there still some things about Nioh 2 bugged me: Youkai gals seem more creepy than seductive ones in first Nioh, and main char seems to be random guy/girl?? not a history figure like William – the most interesting feature of the first Nioh story

    • They certainly need feedback. Talking to my “Nioh” group the Beta has put 4 out of the 5 of us off buying the game. As it currently stands it’s way too hard, and there’s way too much to think about / manage and quite frankly they’ve diluted the core weapons gameplay down far, far too much.

  • Where can we leave feedback on the Beta, because you desperately need feedback, and a hell of a lot of it. At this point as someone who was a massive fan of the original I have some very, very grave concerns about the sequel, grinding and the downplay of actual weapons combat, not to mention the utterly ridiculous difficulty level of, at the very least the second boss, and for the record I did platinum the first game and am starting my way if the wise playthrough before people chime in that I just have to git gud. There are serious issues with the Beta, very serious issues.

  • I tried to contact you also on Twitter without an aswer, in the final version of the game there will be wind/Earth guardian spirits(my favorite) and relative spells?

    • I’m pretty certain earth and wind elementals will be back. In the first game you started with fire, water and lightening Guardian Spirits only if I remember correctly, and others were added gradually as you progressed.

    • Right now after playing the. Beta for sometime now I’ve decided Nioh 2 isn’t for me. It’s an unfocussed mess. Too many elements, and the added padding around Yokai abilities and leveling them as well has convinced me it’s not worth it. Have just over 1000 hours put into the first game, but this is a design disaster. Throw in the fact they’ve gone too far into the whole masocore sphere and just upped the difficulty to ludicrous levels from the get go and I’m out. The truth is they’ve “fixed” things that didn’t need fixing and in doing so strayed far too wide of what made the game enjoyable, despite it’s obvious padding, and the fact they’ve made what I consider to be serious design mistakes means I’m not confident they’ll be able to fix it in 4 months. There’s just too much wrong with this game as it currently stands, and much of it seems to baked into it’s core. Shame, the first game was a classic, but feature creep will kill the second one.

  • Hello!

    I have played through the first game repeatedly and have 100% mission completion in every difficulty (yes EVERY difficulty :3) and so I may be biased, but I would respectfully disagree with those that insist the beta was excessively difficult. I think that this new fashion of play and the new enemies both present enriching and exciting opportunities for new kinds of fighting! I was certainly frustrated in places but that is the hallmark of a good challenge. I never felt that it was particularly excessive, only that it was more demanding in some regards while more forgiving in others. The “kind” revenants for instance provided a tremendous deal of breathing room and the ability to three player coop is excellent. I would say that perhaps the ability to summon an additional friendly shade at an increased cost (amrita+cups?) would be appropriate to provide decreased pressure for players to adapt if they choose The tactical situations presented and dispositions of enemies could be quite strenuous on first blush. Even so, with moderate exploration they evolve smoothly and organically to yield the variety of satisfying fights that I’ve come to expect from Nioh. As it stands, the beta presents us with a much more robust and mature level of design than that of the already stellar first title. I think that Team Ninja is right on the money with this one. This is exactly what I was hoping for and more! It’s both refreshing and familiar. Congratulations to Yasuda san et al! It is my hope that the game upon its release with greatly resemble the balance already achieved in the beta. As for improvements…
    1) I would like the switchglaive to have slightly longer reach (3-10%) and for the overhand chop at the end of combinations to come down at a slight angle. This would create a more “sweeping” hitbox that would miss less frequently when the player character turns awkwardly as a consequence of terrain an enemy disposition in combat. This would make he weapon much more reliable and satisfying. Perhaps a similarly small decrease in damage output (1-3%) would round it out nicely.
    2) Humbly I would suggest that the movement speed of the shift be increased and the defense decreased. This of course can be altered between the three different forms of shift, but particularly for feral and phantom I believe it would be a welcome change. This would encourage and more frenetic, movement-oriented style and create a greater contrast from normal play. Additionally I think it would fit very nicely with the “shiftling” upgrades in their current form, as this would increase the significance of the differing outcomes from build order and overall complimentarity in general. The phantom can presumably be left as it is as the shooting and teleportation feature is already the logical extreme of my suggestion in many respects. The feral mode at least should be changed to increase movement speed and damage while decrease defensive resilience. Taking a page from bloodborne (beast mode) and tying this to successive strikes on the enemy would not go amiss.

  • The hit detection is off. In Nioh 2 beta demo’s second boss, his charging horn attack will still damage me when I’m at the side of his head. His slam attack will also hurt me when I am at his elbow, as if his elbow can slam me with the same force as his head, despite being nowhere near it. The enemy grabs are also very overpowered, unfair, and too hard to dodge with bosses. The second boss for example can kill in one hit, and it really cheapens the experience, especially if you’ve been fighting for a long time. Please nerf the enemy grabs for more fair play, as being killed in one hit really feels cheap.

  • And for the love of god, please remove the tracking on the second boss. Not being able to dodge something because of an enemy or it’s attack tracking you like a heat seeking missile feels impossible to avoid in games, and kind of is
