Predator: Hunting Grounds Revealed During State of Play

The asymmetric online multiplayer experience is being developed in close partnership with Fox, and is due on PS4 in 2020.

“There’s something out there waiting for us, and it ain’t no man. We’re all gonna die.”

When I first saw this scene at 10 years old, it sent a shiver down my spine. This gets to the heart of what makes the Predator universe so freakin’ awesome. It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned special operations badass — if the Predator is hunting you, you are afraid. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

Years later, my fellow IllFonic members and I, fresh off of our last game, are brainstorming what we want to make next. We first assembled 12 years ago to create games based off of movies we love and Predator seemed like the perfect fit. One afternoon during E3, Jared (Gerritzen), Jordan (Mathewson) and I shared our idea that got the entire team amped up. You can tell we’re a team of passionate movie and video game fans.

Once we decided on Predator, it was clear this needed to be a shooter that had to look and feel authentic. Our team’s passion for Predator helped us launch the partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Fox. Not only do these powerhouses believe in our vision, which has made this a dream project, they understand what we want to create. They have given us so much to work with and are empowering us to create something new for fans, while expanding the lore of the Predator. Having that quality bar raised by our partners has been a great driver for creating an amazing game.

So how does Predator: Hunting Grounds play? We’re still pretty early in development – the game is due out next year – but I can give you some initial details about this competitive online multiplayer experience*.

For starters, we’re big fans of asymmetrical multiplayer experiences, and we’re building off our past successes in a whole new way with Predator: Hunting Grounds.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

One group of players will control members of an elite Fireteam who pack state-of-the-art conventional firepower, from shotguns and SMGs to sniper rifles and more.

Meanwhile, one player will control the Predator: a stealthy, acrobatic killing machine bristling with exotic alien technology such as the infamous Plasmacaster.

As the Fireteam attempt to carry out paramilitary missions – annihilating bad guys and recovering important items – the Predator will be closing in, using its advanced vision mode to track and ambush its prey.

Creating an immersive world for the Predator universe has been so rewarding for our team. We’re massive fans of this IP, and it’s made us closely examine every aspect of the game to be certain we are staying true to the world. Fox has been an incredible part of this process.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

Our motto at IllFonic is “Gameplay over everything” and we believe that will be evident the moment players enter the hunting grounds. There will be surprises in store for everyone when the game launches next year.

This is just the beginning, so stick around. We’ll have more Predator: Hunting Grounds updates coming in the near future.

*Internet connection and PlayStation Plus (sold separately) required for online multiplayer.

  • I really enjoy Friday the 13th, so very excited to see what you have in store with Predator!!

  • This immediately just shot to the top of my list of games in the next couple years. Been wanting a Predator game in this style for a long time.

    • I’d rather have something like Concrete Jungle again, a proper meaty single-player experience where the Predator has to clear out dangerous gangs, swapping between brawling and ranged stealth.

A mutliplayer only game where most of the people aren’t playing the title character (who has all the cool stuff) doesn’t seem so interesting to me. I guess it works ok for Friday the 13th and similar. Will be curious to see how different this is.

  • “We’re still pretty early in development – the game is due out next year”.

This statement fills me with confidence…

    • LichesNglitches

Its gonna suck. This is Illfonic, the studio who dropped f13 on a dime and using the lawsuit as an excuse to do so. Even if it is good its a multiplayer focused game so people will be tryharding it in no time and suck out any of the fun it had after a few weeks. F13 was fun (after they fixed the connection issues) when it was new but as soon as people learned to not use mics or use party chat instead, kiting, ext. It became a terrible game instead of a great game to mess around in. And now its dead.

    • Yeah this game dev is horrible, they rushed the release of friday to beat dead by daylight to consoles and ditched the game on a drop of a hat because they knew it was unfinished and adding anything major and charging for it would anger fans

    • My main question is will there be a story mode to this or is this just be like Friday the 13th I would love for there to be a story mode where we get to fight the aliens and that can also open the door for a alien game or even have it where u get to choose if u fight humans or aliens but I’m definitely lookin for a story mode where we get a mixture of fighting humans and aliens if possible

  • If it bleeds, we can kill it

  • wow out of nowhere. I just hope there are more maps available on launch.

  • I’ve put hundreds of hours into Friday the 13th so count me in for this one. Interesting that Sony is helping with it too which hopefully will mean it will turn out better at launch than F13th did.

  • Saw the word predator and was happy then saw the word multiplayer and didnt give a crap anymore.

  • Sony, you son ** * *****! *lock hands in comradery; biceps bulge*. I’m not one for online video games like this, but Predator definitely has my attention.

  • When I first saw the group in tactical gear a small part of me was hoping it was a Socom revival. Then I saw the silhouette of the predator.. Like a narcoleptic I immediately fell asleep.. ZZZzzzzzZZZzzzz

  • Eu estou muito ansioso! Gosto muito dos Predators!

  • Not sure what to think. Definitely has me the most interested of what was shown. But 4v1 has just been an incredibly tough nut to crack. Games that require the “4” to work as a team are so tough when playing with randoms. And getting 5 friends together isn’t always doable. At least, these have been the restrictions I have found when trying to enjoy any of the recent 4v1 games. Really hoping this one proves otherwise.

  • Playstation def needed another exclusive multiplayer title attract PC gamers, having really played any of the 4v1 stuff but I may give it a try since some of them are free for Plus.

  • Is it a 3rd person shooter?

  • LEFT__4__DEAD__2

    Yayyy about time predator!!!!

  • An offline campaign would be amazing too, jussayin’. :P

Best of luck with the game though, hope it’s a hit. Lord knows the Predator brand could really use one after the last entry…

  • Anyone getting a “Dead by Deadlight” vibe?

  • I can’t wait for this.
Does this game have anything to do with the predator vr trophy list or is this a separate development?
    Either way, super excited.
