PlayStation Plus Free Games for May: What Remains of Edith Finch, Overcooked

Greetings, PlayStation Nation! We’ll be adding two new titles to your monthly PS Plus on May 7: one is a slow-burning exploration of family tragedy, and the other a red-hot couch co-op mashup of cooking, puzzles and chaotic, laugh-out-loud fun.

Let’s take a closer look:

What Remains of Edith Finch

From the creators of The Unfinished Swan, the award-winning What Remains of Edith Finch is a highly original and often surreal experience. As the last of the cursed Finch family line, visit your family’s old family home and discover more about your relatives’ untimely deaths through unique interactive storytelling.

Sombre, thought-provoking and at times deeply moving, What Remains of Edith Finch is one of this generation’s most understated gems. If you missed it the first time around, now is your chance to experience it. Winner of Best Game 2017 from the British Academy Games Award (BAFTA), Best Narrative award at the Game Developers Choice Awards 2018 and more, developer Giant Sparrow’s follow up to their debut release, The Unfinished Swan, is a truly a special experience.

Overcooked!

Built specifically with local co-op play in mind, Overcooked! is a fun, frantic and often hilarious experience for up to four players. You and your friends will join forces to become a team of chefs and work against the clock to turn out dishes for hungry customers. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and timing, you’ll need to communicate with each other to chop vegetables, fry steak, stir sauces, plate-up finished meals, and more — all without the kitchen catching fire!

With its cute and colorful stylings, huge range of dishes and kitchen layouts, easy controls, accessible gameplay and a focus on silly, over-the-top antics, Overcooked! is the perfect party game for gamers and non-gamers alike. Play solo or enjoy couch co-op and competitive modes for up to four players.

Both What Remains of Edith Finch and Overcooked will be available to download from PlayStation Store on May 7.

PS Plus Silver: Multiplayer, Cloud Saves, and the PS Plus Discount on games. $40 a year.
PS Plus Gold: Multiplayer, Cloud Saves, and the PS Plus Discount on games, and the PS Plus Games each month. $60 a year.
C’mon Sony! Servers cost next to nothing! We all know this!

  They could even add in a special tier of PS Now service.. Say, you can stream 2 or 3 games per month or something. It’d make Plus worth it and their Now service would be getting utilized more.

this is pretty bad.
when you guys decided to not give away any more vita and ps3 games, i was figuring that you would up the quality of games that you would give for ps4 and whatever you had planned for the ps5 later, but the last couple of months since then i’ve been pretty disappointed by everything except The Surge.
if this is the quality that we can expect, you might as well have not even changed anything.
there are still people out there with vitas and ps3’s who still pay for this service that would really appreciate some love, and you have so many great games that you can still give, unless you guys really do something amazing in the coming months, it just seems like you made an arbitrary decision to cut cost at the expense of customer satisfaction, when this could lead to people just not paying for the service.
i already have a year paid for, but if i can’t see things getting better, i basically have no reason to really keep doing it, even with the discounts because i haven’t really bought enough lately to justify it.

Was a Plus subscriber since the beginning. April was the first month missed, and now May will be too. I really cant find any good reason to resubscribe. At this point I’m questioning if i will support PlayStation at all next generation. PS let their success go to their heads and in turn became anti-consumer. Plus they have decided that adults can no longer think for themselves so everything must be censored for our safety. What is going on over at Sony?

Tiered subs would be a nice idea at this point. Even myself currently im not playing any multiplayer on ps4 i do have plus until sept i think but i dont feel to renew if these are the games we will be getting. Unless a new multiplayer game comes out that i like but im not seeing anything the upcoming year. I thought when dropping ps3 and vita we would have more money for better games even if some were 2 year old or year old exclusives.

Soooo, we have pay a premium to have multiplayer access. Then the “freebies” which we actually pay for are not free, and their “value” has declined dramatically since Vita and PS3 have been removed from the offering table.

Sure there are going to be people who argue that the price of PS+ is still great because if they even only give 1-2 “good” games a year, you basically get that money back, as long as you stay subscribing of course.

The PS5 wont be out till at least 2020, even then, don’t expect PS+ offerings for that outside of indie titles that are backwards compatible with the PS4 anyway for the first several months to a year after launch.

The real problem is in the fact (and it is a fact, not a opinion) the only true “value” in PS+ comes in, if you buy a load of games and save on the PS+ discounts, many people don’t however, they only buy a few games a year, most of which won’t see PS+ savings for several months after release. Then the people who say “then don’t buy those games at launch and wait for PS+ sales”, are a big part of the problem, this common place attitude of expecting the players to bend to Sony’s will, and not the other way around is getting worse and worse.

As for the censorship, Sony needs to step the hell off…the ESRB exists for a reason, otherwise get rid of the ESRB rating system on Sony platform games, and let Sony do it themselves, they seem to enjoy it anyways…when Nintendo has less censorship in the same games released on their platform, Sony has got a serious problem. Personally unless censorship is directly addressed with the PS5 reveal, I will not be continuing to be a Sony supporter, and will take my money elsewhere. (and for the people who say good riddance and whatever, your also another part of the problem, if you can’t understand that, you shouldn’t be here either)

I am holding out hope that the PS5 OS, and PSN on PS5 are going to be absolutely incredible. With no updates to PSN or the PS4 OS in the last 2+ years, I can only assume, Sony has moved on from PS4 and the version of PSN that is connected to PS4.

A phone game and a walking simulator… god this is just such garbage… give me Horizon: zero dawn, gravity rush 2, the last of US, god of war, nioh or something anything half decent… seriously this is just pure garbage only reason I haven’t cancelled is because I’ll lose the actually good games I haven’t got to yet in my backlog.

In this case should give the games of ps3 and vita again because the games of ps4 of plus this month were the worst in history.

Dear PlayStation,

Although these two games are superb, they were already pretty cheap, to begin with. Considering how we often get AAA games in the PSPlus line-up and those present a much better VALUE proposition, I suggest that when you’re giving away indie titles you give away at least three. Ideally, though, we’d feel a lot better with one AAA title, even if it’s old. Talk to Ubi or EA, I’m sure they’d love to get in bed with you.

For those saying these are ‘free’ and ‘extra stuff’. You’re wrong. I subscribed mainly for the free games – I occasionally play online but can live without it. I’m disappointed at the value of two cheap games. That being said, the games themselves are pretty awesome. :D

You may have discontinued PS3 and PSVita but you also inherited a new VR platform. Where are the PSVR games for Plus? Going from six great games a month down to two is disappointing.

Relax people. You guys pay less than $6 per month for this service. If you get 2-3 worthy games a year, you’ve paid for your subscription. You expect them to give out $40 games each month and hand out nearly $500 of games to everyone?

You are paying for online play, free storage, and exclusive sales. The games they give are perks. Not all perks are going to be worth the cost of the full subscription.

I have had Sony’s back for years but I can’t defend this lineup. It just might be the worst one I have ever seen. We have a right to expect better quality games to play on our quality system.

Why did our subscription increase in price again? This is objectively less value. Drop the price or offer more things for the awful price. And no cloud storage increase isn’t enough, that feature should be a free one on PSN. With Plus giving an increased space at most. Doesn’t even work like Steam’s cloud saves which is far better.

Matt can you please post a response as to how these games are selected? While some months are great to good, months like this are becoming too common and seem like selection is based on what ISNT selling so you just make those games free. Also, what happened to use getting to select from a certain list of games?

So now that the free ps+ monthly games are terrible, is there really any benefits in being a loyal PlayStation player? I mean I’ve been a dedicated PS player countless years, since the original PS came out, and I ask for my first refund for a game purchased on PSN that was absolutely terrible. Played it for 30 mins and hated it. And denied immediately. I’ve spent thousands on merch and can’t even get a 30$ refund. Heck I’ve never even received a % discount code or anything other than a theme and a free crappy game after being hacked and shutdown for a while. There’s no appreciation for being loyal or dedicated at all. Quite depressing if you ask me…

Sony, you remember when Xbox One shot themselves in the foot by not listening to loyal community and allowed Playstation to gain a huge advantage? Doing this, giving us terrible games, fewer games will lead to a long and punishing decline in loyalty. This is your last chance Sony. Make the right decision.

Would rather have a discount on PS Plus that only offers online multiplayer. I have zero interest in every other “service” Plus has. Free games are trash and I don’t buy new games often enough to care about the extra store discounts.

Very very dissapointed in the gift of the month may. Plus cost more and more, but you are getting less and less. As said by other people, taking the vita and ps3 out I expect some descent replacements for that, This is just plain rubbish. Without subscribers there is no sony network, the switch to xbox is made very easy this way. Why support a brand which is not supporting its users.

For the first time in over 15 years, I am thinking of jumping ship the next round of next-gen consoles. I very well may switch over to X-Box. I always stuck with PS because they treated us so well and even when one month was not what I wanted usually the next month was good but this isn’t even close it is just some cheap indie garbage.

PS+ Completely lost all its merits in my opinion. I have not renewed since Feb-19, and I couldn’t be more happier. Only been a member for 12 motnhs as I only first purchased and played the PS4 two years ago. PS4 games are becoming like PS3 titles at the 2nd hand shops. Buy titles for a pound or 50p. I also fee sorry for all the people who stacked on years or claim to have back logs of games to play through. Well, I will be grinning when you have to fork up more to keep the licencees for them games.

Again, I will only buy a PS5 after it starts going through it phasing out stage.. Again, buy all the games I wanted to play for pound each and just enjoy. Waiting always pays off.

Wow, another month another utterly garbage selection. Even at the Black Friday price of $40 this isn’t worth it. I remember back when I had my PS3, having PS+ it would pay for itself with the selection we were getting. Now it’s reverse, paying to play multiplayer online and receive bs games monthly. Only 2 again on top of that? Come on Sony you’re better than this smh.

I’m not getting any value out of my PS+ membership. The sales have been awful and I haven’t bought any games in months. There haven’t been any 20% off discount code incentives in over a year. The two free games per month are games that I either own or don’t care about. I don’t play online multiplayer. I don’t use the online storage. There’s absolutely no reason for me to continue my membership at this rate. Is anyone even reading this? Does anyone care?
