Players’ Choice: Apex Legends Was February’s Best New Game

Respawn's addictive new battle royale decimated the competition, handily earning the Players' Choice crown for February.

It was a fierce competition among the multitude of games that dropped in February, but early entrant Apex Legends has emerged as your champion.

This tightly built evolution of the battle royale formula won the hearts of players worldwide with its smart, accessible approach to team communication, its colorful roster of playable Legends, and, obviously, the sliding.

Congratulations, Respawn! Bask in the glory of this victory — you’ve earned it.

Welcome back! 2019 had a surprisingly eventful February, with the release of BioWare’s long-awaited shared world shooter Anthem, as well as Respawn’s surprise battle royale launch Apex Legends. A few more highlights from last month: manga brawler Jump Force, post-apocalyptic sequel Far Cry New Dawn, off-road racer Dirt 2.0, and a whole bunch more. Vote for your pick below, but don’t dally — polls close March 7 at 11:59pm Pacific!

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

    Yay, Apex! Also… First! :D

  • I’m over level 50 on Apex Legend, despite not being a huge battle royale fan. The game is really fun.

  • The BS Blog had a facelift? That’s two of my go to sites in less then one month I believe. Look nice but what’s the “mic” icon for?

    • I imagine that’s because he’s one of the moderators/Guy-Who-Works-There. They usually have a different look to their posts than the rest of us…

  • Fancy, less of a “blog” and more of an actual website now! Would LOVE to see you go back to doing “New Release Tuesday” posts where you actually lay out everything that came out, sales, dlc, etc…

But this is a step in the right direction for now. Nice job!

  • I figured Apex would take it. I do wish you guys let us know what the runners up were though.
