August 2018 Players’ Choice Winner: Yakuza Kiwami 2

Firewall Zero Hour, Madden NFL 19, Dead Cells, Donut County, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Guacamelee 2... what a month!

The votes are in, and the Dragon of Dojima has claimed the Players’ Choice crown for August 2018! Yakuza Kiwami 2 earned enough votes from PlayStation.Blog readers to snag top honors for the month, but Kiryu saw strong competition from Motion Twin’s superlative indie rogue-lite platformer Dead Cells and first-person tactical FPS Firewall Zero Hour. Congratulations all around — August was a great month for gaming!

Wow, what a month! I am really looking forward to seeing how these polls shake out.

Will the new installment of industry mainstay Madden NFL earn a ring from Players’ Choice voters? Perhaps the popular new PS VR shooter Firewall Zero Hour will secure enough votes to take the top spot. Or will the crown go to one of the many artful indies (Dead Cells, Guacamelee 2, Donut County, Battle Chef Brigade Deluxe) that released in August? And, of course, it would be foolish to count out the legendary Dragon of Dojima in Yakuza Kiwami 2.

Cast your vote below, and hit the comments to let us know your predictions for September!

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

  • Dead Cells is amazing

  • Really Good game play

  • I have put a ton of time into dead cells it is ana amazing game

  • Dead Cells… Easily.. All day every day… Quick run, long run… Dead Cells… I got the Signature Edition!!!

  • Gotta go with Dead Cells. I’ve been playing that the most this month and I think it is fantastic. Whenever I lose a run, I immediately want to start a new one to try and get better. And it’s so satisfying when you get that perfect combo of weapons and skills.

  • Yakuza Kiwami 2 for me.

  • Why must we select ‘Other’ for Shenmue I & II? 2nd best selling game last week in the UK, Germany, Australia…

  • Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the only right answer.

  • Firewall Zero Hour is the greatest FPS gaming experience I have had since Goldeneye. This game is revolutionary. If you have PSVR, this is 100% a MUST-BUY. if you have a PS4, the PSVR is a MUST-BUY soley for this incredible game alone. Best way to describe it is Rainbow 6: Siege in Virtual Reality. Don’t take it just from me though, go peep the PSVR and Firewall Zero Hour subreddits and see for yourself! 10/10 and my vote for best VR game of the year!

  • lots of great games this month… I believe dead cells is the best one(still working on the platinum)… but guacamelee 2 is amazing as well… shenmue 1 & 2 are classics… and yakuza kiwami 2 is the one I’m playing ATM (missed on PS2 and I’m amazed on how good the game is)…

  • Not surprised Yakuza Kiwami 2 won. Anytime a lesser known indie title like Dead Cells or even a VR title like Firewall goes up against a well known franchise like Yakuza they are going to lose. It’s kind of unfair. I recommend all three games though.

  • Wish Firewall would have won. I feel like this is a Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars moment. I am absolutely loving FZH right now, and no one around me has any interest in it. Next gen I have no doubt we will see a FZH clone on PSVR2, and it will be a smash hit just like Rocket League. Hopefully it will be from the same team like RL and SARPBC.
