Everspace has landed on PS4! Shoot, loot and craft your way through a beautiful universe full of surprises
We have a long history with space shooters. From our previous studio, our team is best known for the iconic Galaxy on Fire mobile game series (2005) for feature phones, followed by Galaxy on Fire 2 (2008). We were showered with awards and received critical acclaim from mobile gamers from all around the globe; a few years later, bringing it to smartphones and tablets brought us 30 million players combined.
Naturally, for our debut PC and console title, we wanted to live up to our space game reputation, but we wanted to try something new while distinguishing ourselves from the big space sims already out there.
So, in Everspace we took a more action-focused approach to the core gameplay of a space shooter and combined it with a modern, roguelike loop, twisting you through an ever-changing yet beautifully crafted universe full of surprises, driven by a clever narrative that fits the replayability.
It turned out to be a winning formula: Everspace became one of 12 Steam Early Access Platinum Graduates of 2017, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it to space game enthusiasts on PS4 and PS4 Pro.
Welcome to the harsh environment of the Beltegrades, a demilitarized-zone born from an uneasy treaty. Loot is ripe for picking, and criminal activity is flourishing within abandoned military outposts throughout the cluster. Derelict stations tempt scavengers with hidden treasures. Large-scale mining facilities burrow deep into asteroids for precious resources, bolstering the corporation’s monopoly over the region while deterring the competition with heavy firepower.
The Encounters expansion brings new story-driven characters into the fold, offering individual multi-mission questlines. With tons of new gear and new locations to explore, the DLC opens up new paths and possibilities to reach your ultimate goal.
Your task is simple: Get to your destination. But you don’t know what this is all about, nor who – or what – stands in your way. Cosmic hazards impede your progress while hostiles are in hot pursuit. The further you travel brings back fragments of memory, helping to piece together the meaning of your existence and what your final goal is.
Every playthrough generates a unique path to follow. After you have finished (or fled) an area, you must choose a new node on your sector map to push forward, never fully knowing what awaits in the later sectors.
Everspace is played through multiple runs. New runs start from the beginning of the first sector, every time. The procedural generation following strict design rules guarantees unique, mesmerizing space environments and a sense of progression on your path through unfamiliar territory. It is unlikely you’ll encounter the same scenario twice.
To survive, you constantly have to make choices, such as:
- On-the-fly tactical decision-making – cloak your ship and sneak past or attack with all guns blazing?
- Gather resources for much-needed repairs in the local asteroid belt or raid a well-guarded convoy for their precious supplies?
- Explore the mysterious black hole visible in the distance with unknown consequences or stay safe by heading toward the space station for refueling?
- Investigate derelict space stations and shipwrecks or try your luck in the next system?
In Everspace, dying can be rewarding. Some NPCs will employ you on special missions or sell handy equipment, but most will try to kill you in a variety of ways. No matter how skilled a pilot you are, death is inevitable, but it’s also the beginning of a much larger journey.
Your death reveals a deep upgrade tree to invest your last run’s earnings. Unlock new abilities and equipment, improve various stats and enable new features that may change your play style. While your gear from your last run is lost, you’ll keep your precious blueprints (crafting options) and collected enhancements (modifiers that reshape your runs) forever, allowing you to come back even stronger in your next playthrough.
This mix of persistent progression and temporary progression, combined with an ever-changing game world and a rewarding story will motivate you to play Everspace again, again and again. Maybe, even forever? Well, you can find out for yourself as it has just been released at PlayStation Store.
