Players’ Choice Jan. 2018 Winner: Monster Hunter World

Capcom's gargantuan new game dominated voting in our first-ever monthly reader-voted Players' Choice poll.

Update: And we’ve got our first official Players’ Choice winner! Monster Hunter World devoured the competition, earning more than 50% of the total votes. Dragon Ball FighterZ mustered nearly 20% of the vote, followed by EA Sports UFC 3 and Celeste.

Monster Hunter: World

All in all, a fine start to the year. Thanks to those who participated, and we’ll see you February 28 for the next official Players’ Choice vote! It’s another solid lineup, with Shadow of the Colossus, Secret of Mana, and Metal Gear Survive among some of the higher-profile new releases. See you then!

Hot off our 2017 PlayStation.Blog Game of the Year Awards, we’ve been looking for new ways to recognize the very best games on PlayStation platforms.

So we decided to ask the real experts: you! Today, we’re launching Players’ Choice, a new game-of-the-month award decided by players.

How does it work? On the last day of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Seven days later, we’ll close the polls and announce the winner on PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners will throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

Time to get started! Tell us: what was the best game of January 2018?

  • not a great month for games

  • Monster Hunter World all the way!!!! I’ve been having a lot of fun with my friends in it. Thanks capcom! Well done

  • Might as well close the polls. Monster Hunter World. Best game of not only last month, but this generation.

  • Iconoclasts for it being on both PS4 and Vita
    (Also a great game)

  • Dissidia NT is a big disappointment worser than it’s PSP games in every way

  • one of the Best January Months in 8 console Generation and of course Monster Hunter World will be Top, not only for this month but one of the GOTYs for 2018…

  • I’m sorry to say it, because I really do love this idea for the PS Blog that I would have wanted this a long time ago, it’s just that there’s very few months in a year where this concept will prove actually useful compared to the game of the year poll being probably that March-June area and October-November area where a lot of big titles come out. Months like this, I can see a high percentage of the votes going toward the same game which I may be wrong on, but I can see Monster Hunter World winning like nothing this month and Shadow of the Colossus next month.

    • Maybe you are Right, but one of the Biggest reasons for creating this Polls is for some Games that won’t deserving Good attention.
games such as Nioh or Nier compare to Call of Duty or Star Wars Battlefront Games in Selling Part…
this Poll Maybe help them to become more important for Buying…

    • The idea that a poll like this would help promote games like Nioh or Nier over CoD or Battlefront when released at the same time assumes that either they can take over the number one spot, or that Sony shows vote percentages or otherwise promotes second-place and third-place finishers.

Besides – this is just a popularity contest, anyway. How many people have had time to actually play every game on the list to fairly compare? Most of us will be voting based on videos or blog posts we’ve seen, which will all be influenced by whatever’s most popular out there.

Now, if they have a standard that whichever game wins becomes the free Plus game the following month (so in March, since we vote on January games during February, they’d make Monster Hunter World the free game), then that changes EVERYTHING. But that’s not realistic to expect.

    • Good feedback – we had these discussions too, but we’ll have to see how it pans out. I think it could make the really competitive months extra interesting. We’ll keep an eye out for any issues!

    • I mean, were you trying to make an example to support your point? If those titles win it just means they were voted the best of the month… as intended.

  • Such a terrible time to not be able to afford any of these awesome titles! I feel like I’m missing out on so much right now! Anyway, I haven’t played any of them (apart from the beta of Dissidia, which I didn’t really enjoy honestly), but I heard and read great things for Celeste, Monster Hunter: World and Dragon Ball FighterZ. And since I’m a DB fanboy, my vote goes there!

Boy, if you started the year like this, I’d like to see what’s gonna happen by the time it’s over! Bring it on!

  • I have an idea…the game that wins should be on sale

  • Shu – Perhaps I missed it, but I read the post twice… what exactly is the point of this monthly poll? Is there a discount on the winning game? Is this just for market study purposes? In all honesty, at first blush, seems pretty pointless. Like an initiative for initiative’s sake.

    • That would be counter-intuitive. People wouldn’t vote for the game they actually thought was the best, they’d vote for the game they want the most so it goes on sale.

It’s a way to show appreciation.

    • It’s designed to celebrate great games! It’s much like our Game of the Year Awards — a way to help other players who may be wondering what to play next.

    • Understood. Thanks for the response Sid.

  • I had to give monster hunter world my vote It’s a great game to play with friends thank you capcom

  • FighterZ, easy.

  • Monster Hunter should dominate this poll. The game is HUGE right now,

  • I’m not into Monster Hunter (nothing against it, just not my thing), so I voted for Celeste. Don’t sleep on this game folks. It’s very good.

  • Monster Hunter World is EASILY the best game to come out this month.

  • At the same time, can we also vote for the worst games in January that should take no part of PSN store?
Briks2、 Frutakia2、Cold Iron、sword of fortress、 neverend…not to mentione so many release from the past.
PLEASE please have some kind of quality control for what you sell to your users. This is not steam nor you have a refund system.
The more of low quality products flood on your system, the more damage it will cause and harm the entire eco-system of PlayStation.

  • Dragon Ball FighterZ!

  • To me it’s Gintama Rumble. It was released January 19.
    And yes, it’s in english.

    • Wow never expected to see someone actually mention Gintama here on the Blog.Glad to see a fellow Gintama lover here. And yes Gintama Rumble is the real deal…finally Gintama had a well-deserved full-fledged game.

  • I am preety upset with a useless voucher code I got when I bought GT Sport. I wish I have a voucher replace

  • Why is Detroit by Quantic Dream not on this list?

  • Monster Hunter world

  • With past Monster Hunter games, I felt too complicated, stiff controls, weird area transitions. Mostly I noticed the negatives.

With Monster Hunter World, playing in the beta, I found it to be greatly improved accessibility to the point where I finally “got” it. I finally got to enjoy it like the fans of the series. Hopefully without making it less enjoyable for those fans that put up with all the technical limitations and high learning curve of past games.

  • Star Trek: Bridge Crew should be on this list. It’s a GREAT game and very immersive!

  • Monster hunter world for number one, dbzf for number two. And thanks for the psn 10% discount code, that make me buy both monster hunter world and dbzf :)

I think it will be really cool if psn give 10% code on the last week of each month, that will make me nearly full digital for this gen (beside a couple of physical steelbook edition).

  • I am throughly enjoying the inpatient

  • Hi I think it’s a good month for game even if I only got a ps4 this yr I’ve had a ps2 since 2006-2017 XD still works too. Also in my opinion the new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 game sounds like a good 2017 game anyone agree?

  • Monster Hunter World is not only the best game of this month, but the best game i have ever played in my life

  • They didn’t ask if you thought it was a good month for games or not. They asked what was your favorite game of the month. What the hell is the matter with you people?

  • I don’t even own a copy of DB Fighterz but I know it should win… wish I had a copy though…..

  • Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory

  • Basically a vote for whichever series u like the most? I doubt the majority of gamers would’ve played all the games extensively, especially the ones that are released at the end of the month. The Impatient’s PS VR requirement severely limits its experience to only those who have it.

I haven’t start playing Dissidia NT yet & I loved the original Dissidia, but seeing the ratings & few comments here about it says it’s inferior to its PSP predecessors, now I’m kinda having buyer’s remorse….

  • Monster World, easy

  • Where exactly is this poll? It says it’s supposed to be up now, but I can’t find it anywhere.

  • Dragon ball fighterz should be praised for it’s marvel vs capcom like gameplay and it’s 3d visuals make it feel like you’re actually watch dragon ball z kai

  • Honestly all the games listed are lame. I voted fortnite

  • Monster hunter world

  • This month wasn’t really great for games nothing really got my eye.

  • I have not played Monster Hunter, but what I have seen and the reactions of those I know have showed me that this game is amazing. I want to at least try this title, but I may have to purchase a copy in the future.

  • Literally does not need to be any other game besides Monster Hunter World.

If you are not playing Monster Hunter World right now, then you’re not living life. Seriously, stop wasting your time with whatever game you are playing and start hunting!

also make sure you have a solid month to devote ONLY to it.

  • Is it me or is choosing a game of the month redundant? Firstly, i have not even played 1 of these games, and second a month is definitely not long enough to judge which game is better. So I put the inpatient for vr because I’d like to see vr as a platform move ahead and be recognized.

  • Capcom…
    ….you glorious bastards.

  • Where is the poll?
Do we just write a comment with the game?
Do we select one or one for each platform?
Do we need to provide links for those who don’t remember all the games in January or will you provide a list?
I went through the blog for “The Drop:” posts of January 2018.
There are 4 as The first Tuesday of January had no releases.
I do love this concept of voting monthly as last year there were several games forgotten by years end that shined over later releases.
So without further ado, my selection for January is… Monster Hunter World
    VR is The Inpatient
For Vita I enjoyed The Little Red Lie

I feel Beholder is the best Indie game for January. Kerbal was a re-release so it can’t win.

Please, Oh Please keep doing this each month.

  • It won’t count, but I voted for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition anyway. :)

  • Well its useless to ask…of course Monster Hunter wins and its probably GOTY 2018.

  • i can already predict the upcoming GOW winning the month of april, no doubt about it

  • Monster Hunter World is a sweet game, it’s got my vote! I have had a blast playing this on my Pro, it’s been everything I was expecting and then some. If you haven’t played it then don’t knock it before you try it. Game is amazeballs!!!

  • bruh dragon ball fighterz

  • dragon ball fighterz

  • The year just started there isn’t much of an option of games. But I’ve been a hunter since the beginning, the Monster Hunter series never disappointed me so my votes for MHW.
