Meet Kahuna, the Newest (and Strongest) Disc Jam Character

Their latest patch also includes major engine upgrades and updated mechanics

Hey everybody!

We’re Tim and Jay from High Horse Entertainment and we’re excited to detail our latest patch and announce Disc Jam’s first new character: Kahuna!

Disc Jam

Kahuna is the strongest character in the game, but unlike other power throwers, he can put a good amount of spin on the disc as well. Defending Kahuna can be a challenge, but he’s the slowest character in the game so be sure to move him around the court and keep him sliding when you face him!

Disc Jam

To unlock Kahuna, you’ll have to spend some Jamoleons. Disc Jam’s new characters will always be unlockable with in-game currency, but if you’re running a low balance you can visit the new Jam Store and purchase all the Jamoleons you need!

There have been a number of other updates in this patch including a significant change to the slide mechanic and some tweaks to the character balance. We’ve been having a lot of design chats in our discord about the current state of Disc Jam’s core gameplay. Thanks to our players’ excellent feedback, we have a good idea about what we want to address and with this update we are taking a small step towards further refinement of Disc Jam’s balance.

The slide “early-out” mechanic was making baseline play far too safe. Players could hang back and farm perfect throws so long as double-slides were still faster than sprinting. As we’ve mentioned in the past, sliding is a defensive maneuver that should have no offensive potential beyond traversing the court. With this patch, throw timing is no longer tied to the slide-out delay and all characters recover at the same rate. The throw timer will begin the instant the player has full movement returned after the slide. We’re eager to see how the competitive landscape shifts with this latest update!

Disc Jam

Disc Jam has also seen some significant engine upgrades in this patch. There have been a number of graphical improvements including a new tonemapper which matches the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) standard. Load times have decreased, post processes have been overhauled and our cloth solver has been updated for performance. There have also been a number of bug fixes and minor improvements.

Since our launch in March, we’ve added skill-based matchmaking, global rankings, leaderboards, dedicated servers, cross-play, and completely revamped our unlock system. Starting with the release of Kahuna, we’re now focused on delivering new characters, maps, modes, and other in-game content so stay tuned for future updates!
