Roguelike RPG Touhou Genso Wanderer Arrives February 7

Call me crazy, but I think Touhou is about to take the Western world by storm, dood! Some of you got a taste with our recent release of Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, but you’ll be able to get a whole lot more when Touhou Genso Wanderer launches on PS4 (physical and digital) and PS Vita (digital only) on February 7! As an added bonus, we’re also going to include a free copy of Touhou Double Focus, a 2D platformer starring Aya, on its own disc in the launch day edition of the game.

Yup, that’s right, if you pre-order the game to make sure you get the launch day edition for PS4, not only will you be getting Touhou Genso Wanderer, but you’ll also get Touhou Double Focus, a reversible cover, and a mini-art book!

Okay, now let me back up a second. For the uninitiated, a deep dive into the world of Touhou is a wild and crazy ride that could take you weeks to emerge from, but you can get a quick primer in my last Touhou related post. Up to speed? Okay, good because Touhou Genso Wanderer takes the bullet-hell world of the Touhou Project in a new direction as it wraps Reimu and her pals in the trappings of a roguelike RPG.

If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you’re licking your lips at the thought of challenging random dungeons, enemies, and traps in search of the best loot in Gensokyo. You’ll want to temper that enthusiasm with a touch of patience and strategy though, because despite its charming outer skin and fun story, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a roguelike worthy of the name.

While setting out into randomly generated dungeons on your quest to resolve the latest incident in Gensokyo, you’ll need to take care — dying in the dungeon will result in not only the shame of death, but also the loss of all the items you’re carrying. Of course, that’s not always a bad thing, as losing your favorite weapon could just make you experiment with one of the hundreds of other unique items in Gensokyo, or force you to spend a little time crafting a new favorite in the item fusion system.

The item fusion system lets you make use of the myriad items that you’ll pick up in your quests into the dungeons of Gensokyo, instead of just trashing them all. You’ll also be taking a pal into the dungeon for each adventure. With six partner characters to choose from, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a favorite no matter what your playstyle is!

To find out more about all the systems in Touhou Genso Wanderer, visit the game’s official website, and don’t forget to pre-order the launch edition if you want to snag a free bonus copy of Touhou Double Focus!

Alrighty, now I’m off to get to the bottom of this latest incident before the rest of you get a chance to on February 7. Catch you in the comments, dood!

  • Sweet stuff. I’ll check it out

  • So let me get this straight. The 2D platformer is only for the PS4 version?

    • The 2D platformer, Touhou Double Focus, will be available digitally for both the PS4 and the PS Vita. There is currently no physical release planned for the PS Vita, but you can get it on a disc for the PS4 with the Touhou Genso Wanderer launch day edition. Hope that clears it up!

    • Jordan, the information I’m getting here is that double focus is only free for the PS4 version AND the PS4 version gets artbooks as well?

I’m feeling pretty stabbed in the back here. :,(

    • Well to be fair, PS4 users have to pay more for their version…so that actually makes sense.

  • I thought this was originally announced as a physical release for Vita?

  • I was interested to buy the collector’s edition, but I refuse to buy the PS4 version.

Also, as generic123 pointed out, on June 8th Gematsu posted an article indicating that both the PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game would be physical.

I’m also concerned as what will happen to PS Vita owners who simply can’t pre-order the game: No free Touhou Double Focus?

I really hope NISA respects their original statement and release the PS Vita version physically. I would certainly buy the PS Vita collector’s edition, as I’ve done with all previous NISA PS Vita limited editions so far.

As it stands, I don’t even see the point of buying the standard version of the game at launch, being digital only and seemingly not including the free Touhou Double Focus.

    • To be fair, those were Gematsu’s words, not NIS’s. Gematsu didn’t list a source other than the video, and nowhere in the video or the description of the video did it say it’d be both physical and digital for either platform. (This is why sources are imporant…) I’ve been looking around for anywhere that NIS said it’d be a physical release, but haven’t found a source. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, of course, but if they did say it, they didn’t seem to make a big deal about it.

  • My PS3 can probably run this, seriously what was the point upgrading if the PS4 is gonna get games like this?

  • And how to pre-order? Can’t select shipping method :(!

  • Is it weird that I’m more interested in Double Focus? I mean I’m excited for both but that metroidvania platformer gets me hyped!

Regardless, pre-ordered the LE. Thanks for taking all my money NISA. Appreciate it… >.>

  • I can only seem to find a preorder for the Limited Edition? Where’s the standard edition?

  • Thanks for the double release of Touhou on PSVita.

Touhou is storming a front here…4 games in total.

  • Where is the Vita Limited Edition?

  • Question: This es Normal version of Touhou Genso Wanderer?. Or is the Reload Version?

  • Please release a PS Vita Limited edition.
This is a Rougelike I want to pick up for the PS Vita.

I use the PS4 for more demanding action games.

  • Didn’t you guys said there will be physical ver for the vita? Just for being a bunch of liars you lost a client

  • I really do not appreciate digital only on the Vita. You have lost a sale from me.
