PlayStation Meeting 2016: Introducing PS4 Pro and the Slimmer, Lighter PS4

More than three and a half years ago, I stood on stage in New York to unveil PlayStation 4, which captured our vision for the future of gaming. That vision placed the gamer at the center of the PlayStation ecosystem and empowered developers to create transformative experiences. This afternoon I returned to New York for another PlayStation Meeting to discuss the evolution of the PlayStation 4 platform and introduce PS4 Pro. This new high-end PS4 will sit alongside the new slimmer, lighter PS4, which we officially unveiled today.

The new standard PS4 is starting to ship to retailers now and will be available by September 15 for a suggested retail price of $299.99 USD ($379.99 CAD), representing great value for gamers who haven’t joined the PS4 community just yet. Our engineering and design teams collaborated to consolidate PS4’s high-performance technology into a smaller, more energy efficient form factor. When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent. Despite the sleek design, the new model packs all of the same powerful components that have made PS4 the best place to play.

With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle. PS4 Pro, which launches November 10, 2016, for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD), enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro.

With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world.

Some developers are updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support, while other developers are building PS4 Pro support into upcoming releases. At launch, you’ll be able to download patches for games – such as Uncharted 4 – which are enhanced when playing on the new console. Future releases that will have PS4 Pro enhancements built-in include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone.

However, even if you own an HDTV that does not support either 4K or HDR, PS4 Pro still provides a number of benefits. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate. If you’re a gamer that wants to be at the forefront of innovation, PS4 Pro is for you.

We also know a lot of our fans watch movies, TV shows, and videos on their PS4, so we’re working with our partners who offer best-in-class streaming services to build new apps for PS4 Pro. Netflix will launch a new app at the launch of PS4 Pro that supports 4K. YouTube is also developing a new 4K-compatible app for PS4 Pro.

But it’s important to note that the choice is yours. Whether you’re playing on PS4 Pro, the new slimmer and lighter PS4, or the PS4 system you bought at launch in 2013, you’ll have access to the same amazing games with the same features and same vibrant community that make PlayStation the best place to play. There won’t be any gameplay features exclusive to PS4 Pro or the standard PS4. In fact, we believe the impact of HDR on gaming and entertainment is so promising that all PlayStation 4 systems – back to the very first console sold in 2013 – are now HDR capable.

It is incredibly important for us, and our developer partners, to maintain one PS4 audience. All PS4 systems are also ready to deliver on the promise of virtual reality with the upcoming launch of PlayStation VR. Whichever system you choose, we’ll continue to give you the exclusive franchises, blockbuster third-party titles, and unique games from creative developers that you’ve come to expect from PlayStation.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone in the PlayStation Nation for the incredibly passionate support around PS4. From day one with PS4, we’ve been driven to create a system tuned to the needs of gamers. PS4 Pro builds on that goal even further, and we can’t wait for you to try it.

  • Come on, Sony updated a console that was going to continue to be sold for a few more years anyway, while providing a cheaper model beside it. Thank you Sony for the option!

There’s a lot of ps3 owners who might finally take the leap. If you already own a ps4, you’ll get HDR. Thank you Snow. The Pro will improve performance for 1080p, raise the bar a little higher, and start breaking into 4k. Thank you Sony.

Granted the Pro won’t spin a disk, but will start providing 4k through online media, which is what I use mostly anyway. And they’re giving us this option at a reasonable price. Thanks again.

If you don’t want it, don’t buy it, for crying out loud. But you’re going to demonize Sony or kiss them goodbye altogether, for giving us options and breaking out of the mold. Give me a break. What a bunch of whining, entitled babies. We should be happy we have such options.

Granted its not absolutely perfect for everyone in every situation, but Sony is pushing the envelope a little more, and we will all benefit from it. Current owners have lost nothing, and only gained from the upgrades, yet they complain the most. Pathetic.

    • “We should be happy”??? Why? 4K Streaming is ALREADY on almost every 4K TV. So, SONY is giving us so little for us who ALREADY have a PS4. “4K gaming”? It’s not for sure the NATIVE Resolution of the system. As far as it seems, the TRULY benefits are:
A PS4 Pro with a FHD HDR TV. Nothing more.

  • This conference and the 4k streaming are totally nonsense, as the people who already have 4k TV with built-in netflix and amazon video apps won’t care about 4k streaming on PS4 Pro. I bought X930D TV and some 4k blu ray discs, and now just waiting for the PS4 Pro that supposed to have 4k blu ray playback because Sony is selling 4K concept all the time and blu ray is the standard Sony it selves. Then today you are telling us there is no 4k blu ray disc support? With this disappointment and that upscaling 4K gaming BS, what’s the point letting us spend more than 2k dollars to get a 4K TV?BTW good to see sony stock drops today.

    • it really is hard to imagine this decision! I’m still in shock….

All this talk about 4k and HDR and how great it is…. we all know HDR is awesome…. HDR is the next level for TV’s…..

      They are marketing this thing as 4k…. 4k 4k 4k !!!!

but then they omit the best source of 4k and HDR content…. its insane…

  • You guys missed the perfect opportunity to call it the PS4k

  • hi on new playstion 4 pro it well be same games on playstion 4 normal ? or the old playstion 4 they stop coming games on it

    • of course it will be the same games on both consoles. Sony aren’t that stupid (where’s my 4k blue ray player!) Just games will look a bit better on pro if the games support it.

  • Major let down for them to not include a uhd blu-ray drive. Seems odd that you would push 4k so hard with this and exclude that. “Hey, we’re including a Netflix app for 4k movies”. Good for you, my 4k tv (a requirement for all this to work) already has one. I know the games will look great, but when spending $400 dollars on a new ps4 just 3 years after spending $400 on the old one, it has to have the latest stuff. I can buy an xbox 1 s 500gig for $300 and watch 4k blurays (cheapest uhd blur-ray player currently out, as far as I know) and have games upconverted and have HDR content.

I prefer sony consoles but they missed the mark, in comparison to Microsoft, on this one. I’ll wait till some kid sells his/hers on craiglist for $300 bucks with two controllers.

    • Same question I have. Only reason I was considering buying the XBox 1 Smil was for the UHD player. I don’t think Sony overlooked this detail. Maybe they’ll announce it later? I hope anyways

  • THREE HUGE MISTAKES:

    1) Lack of 4K BluRay when Xbox One S has one for $100 less.

    2) Lack of support for PS4’s Nyko Databank (even my my 4TB PS4 is almost full Sony!)

    3) Making it look like the “Slim” redesign.

    Sony dropped the ball. :(

    • No offense but it’s not really their responsibility to maintain compatibility with some 3rd party accessory. The accessory makers have to adapt to new hardware, and they will.

  • Anyone know if it will accept a 15mm 2.5″ hard drive so I can buy a 4TB 2.5″ HD for the Pro?

  • Well I was interested until I saw that there was no 4k uhd blu ray support. That for me is a deal breaker and I shall be sticking with my current model as I was looking for a all in one box. For the first time ever I will possibly look to changing platforms when the XB Scorpio arrives.

  • Does that mean that PSplus could possibly be an option for ps4 I am just curious because it’s going to start costing $60 for a year and $30 for 3 months and that could get to the point I just can’t afford it anymore

  • sucks that it doesn’t support 4k blue ray. if PSVR runs better on a pro ill buy one day 1 if not ill wait for price drop

    • Most people will watch movies and content via streaming or digital media, not blu rays. 4k drive would have pushed price over $500 most likely. PSVR will run better with PS4 Pro.

  • 3/4 hrs finger banging yourself in front of a camera

  • I had just bought a 4k tv a couple months ago and wanted to buy a 4k blu ray player but decided to wait for the new ps4 to come out. I’m Shocked to discover that the ps4 pro does not come with a 4k blu ray player! Thats insane i cant believe someone at Sony thought that was a good idea. 4k streaming is pointless because all 4k tvs are smart tvs and can already stream 4k. I definitely wont be upgraded my ps4 now, but to get a affordable 4k blu ray player I might have to turn to the Xbox One S.

  • Wow this has a lot of comments! Pre-orders are still available on Amazon.

  • So the PS4 Remastered/Pro adds 4K and an advantage when it comes to PSVR……..So?

You expect us who are still paying off our VR preorders to shell out another $500 dollars for a console that only improves slightly on the one we already own? What idiot at Sony thought this was a good idea? This is what you waste precious resources and money on when you should be allocating it to the hardware you already have on the market? You know…LIKE THE MOTHERF’N VITA!!!!???

The PS4 Pro is a terrible mistake. We don’t need two different Playstations on the market. Especially when 4K hasn’t even taken off yet and most of your customers don’t even own a 4K TV let alone the internet we would need to support 4K streaming. You didn’t even bother adding a UHD Drive!! Your 4K console isn’t even good at it what it does. NO THANKS. I’ll stick to my original and only PS4 that belongs on the market. F the Pro. Shu should be fired for this crap.

  • How many sad faces can I put on here? I ordered Batman v Superman in 4K Blu Ray in anticipation to get this console. I bought a ps4 in 2014 and convinced my wife that getting UHD Blu Ray from the new ps4 would be worth it. I was going to pre-order this console. Well without the 4K Blu Ray player the deal’s off. My mind is so blown right now. It looks like I will be buying a 4K Blu Ray player instead of a ps4 pro. I am sooooo sad right now. The only one buying this console will be single guys and female gamers who don’t have to convince anyone to buy anything. Oh well, we’ll just wait another 3 years for ps5

  • So Horizon was only pushed back once more to add some better visuals for your ps4 ‘pro’ or what?? Shame!

  • No 4k blu-ray player= no buy for me, sorry sony.

  • I can’t care less about the 4k.. but VR thou…

  • LMAO at all the peeps complaining about a UHD player. People get with the times and stream! Who the heck buys disks at all anymore? Sony didn’t drop the ball they are ahead of the curve unlike you people complaining. Sony is forcing you to get with the times and stream just as Apple is with the no headphone jack.

    • I buy discs all the time… i want quality, not convenience.

don’t even bring Apple into this…. they are LOL

even today, streaming cannot touch the audio and video quality of 4k bluray…. don’t believe me? try it yourself!

    • People who like the BEST Hardware and quality… That People (like I do). The quality of 4K Streaming is a shame. I have 200Mbps Internet. 4K Streaming is not a problem for Me. Nevertheless, the 4K Streaming quality it is… Unless PS4 Pro will support Backwards Compatibility, it’s useless to buy it.

  • Only reason I would trade up is for 4k blu-ray player. Started buying 4k Blu-rays (Deadpool and The Huntman’s Winter War) because they come with blu-ray or digital download to hold me over until the Neo now Pro was released. Delay the release, update the hardware and your current base and many physical media supports will definitely upgrade or buy new because people are starting to buy 4k TV and blu-rays. I am not sure how Sony dropped the ball so much on this. Some of us need to be in the meeting when silly decisions not to have a 4k blu-ray drive was decided.

    • I am the same as you…. started buying 4k blurays already in anticipation of this new hardware….

and yes, i would have LOVED to be in that meeting when the decision was made so i could laugh at that person! LOL

  • Most people Buy movies through Amazon which is physical disks. I don’t forsee myself streaming movies because I haven’t really found a good streaming service for movies. I’ve had a 4K TV for the last five months and was getting so excited for the new PS four, but without a UHD player the deal is off.

  • I have a question, hopefully someone from Sony will answer this. I have a very loyal fan of PlayStation since 1995. I didn’t catch this at the conference and I’m sure Sony wouldn’t overlook a detail like this but I still have to ask…. 1. Will PS4 Pro play 4K blu ray discs as well? 2. Will the HDD be exchangeable like the regular PS4?

  • PS4 Pro is a SCAM!

  • I have a 4K TV but I’m fine with my original PS4. Still use my PS3 from time to time. I’m more interested in what Nintendo has to show with the NX than anything that was shown here.

  • Meeh i see no reason to upgrade just for prettier pictures. I think i’ll keep my OG Ps4 till the Ps5 comes out till i need a new Ps4.

  • THANK YOU SONY! I feel like your looking at me again! All this whining coming from these guys! Did you even hear the meeting! IT’S NOT FOR YOU! I have a 65″ Sony Bravia 4K HDR, I have VR pre ordered on the 13th of October. I not rich, it’s just what I like. Who is buying disc. All my games are digital. THIS IS FOR A KAT LIKE ME. If you don’t have it like that, no worries they didn’t say you couldn’t play. Just unnecessary bladder! Sony I put my pre-order down yesterday and I’m ready. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR LAUNCH! Can’t wait to see what you got!

  • You messed the bed Mr. House. This just sounds like a $400 upscaling box.

  • can you imagine the Sony managers reading these comments?? LOL

looking across the board room at each other like ” who’s idea was it to omit the 4k bluray drive???? ” LOL

Whoever made that decision….. “Delete your account”

  • Can’t believe I have to buy an Xbox to have an actual 4K console

  • I have every Playstation 1, 2, 3, 4 and a PSVR on order since march. But I will likely not be buying the Pro. Believe me though, I had every intention of doing so before the announcement yesterday, but no 4K player is not acceptable for me. And to compound that in the FAQ it stated that it is up to the developer to add enhancements to PSVR on the Pro. So I can’t even get a confirmation that it will improve things? I am extremely saddened and disappointed.

  • Does anyone else think that the power of the ps4 pro has should have been the power of the regular ps4 when it first launched? Because to me, the specs that they are talking about for the ps4 pro seems more like a next gen console then the current ps4.

    • There are a LOT of people who believe that. Xbox One has that “Secret Sauce” since the beginning and now is the Xbox One S, layer Xbox One Scorpio (some people say it’s a OS). Both companies drop the 4K since the beginning, until now. SONY has been the pioneers of the Hardware with PS Systems… EVER! The TFLOPS of PS4 are a shame. This PS4 Pro seems that the original PS4 should have been 3 years ago.
      WHERE IS THE BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY???

    • Yea, not that the original ps4 is bad but this is what it should have been at launch.

  • No UHD Blu-ray, means I won’t buy. Shame I really liked it, but just visual upgrade not worth it. Very disappointed. People have said, why does it matter. Well streaming services compress the sound and picture. 4k Blu-ray, can store multiple audio streams fully uncompressed. This includes Dolby atmos and other uncompressed formats. 80% of the effect in a movie is sound. 20% is visual. A very sad move. And to find out the Xbox one S will have a UHD Blu-ray…. Well that’s salt in the wound pouch.

  • For mid range prices I have no reason to buy a PS4 slim, XBox One S has HDR, 4K up-scaling and an UHD Bluray player.
For 4K HDR features, I still have no reason to buy a PS4 Pro either as already the XBox One S already has the same up scaling features.
For graphical fidelity and gaming quality, I still have no reason to buy an under-powered PS4 Pro compared to XBox Scorpio
The only reason I can think of is affordable low quality VR experience, and even if you add the camera, move controller prices and the head set and compare that to Scorpio + Oculus it wouldn’t be that much of a difference. And the quality difference is still in favor of the Scorpio!
What good reason do I have to get the next line up of PS4 offerings?

  • What a disappointment… I just bought a 4K OLED and was going to get the Pro for use as my UHD BD player. Now I guess not. I like my physical discs (heck, most come with a digital code anyway) – streaming doesn’t offer the PQ no matter how good your connection is (I’ve watched streaming UHD content on my Amazon Fire TV box, and it doesn’t hold a candle to disc).

Now I have to at least consider the XBOne S – until this revelation the PS4 Pro was a Day 1/Preorder guaranteed purchase. Instead, it could mean putting my money in Microsoft’s pockets.

  • Everybody complaining about the ps4 pro no uhd player but there no such thing as 4K movies I own Xbox one and Xbox one slim , ps4 and I will get ps4 pro , and wii u look me up jaydabaddest21 on Xbox and ps4 and wii u I like the pro cause it’s all about gaming nobody knew the game industry we be like a computer I only want games on my console if u want a uhd 4K player buy one stop complaining and being cheap

  • I see it comes with a 1TB HDD, I have a 2TB in my current PS4, can I possibly out my current HDD in the new PS4 pro? Is the pro even upgradable at all?

  • If the Xbox One S design is any indication, I’d expect Xbox Scorpio to look even better. I wouldn’t mind if it’s a bigger version the One S design. I also expect Microsoft to do a video about the Scorpio having Blu-ray UHD support like how Sony did with the game sharing instructional videowith Shu and Boyes.

  • should have included 4k UHD blu-ray support, i was waiting for this announcement to get a PS4+ but i will have to go for the xbox one s instead, even if it is less powerful than a standard ps4 (which i already have)

  • Bro bro bro bro bro bro the hype is reaaaaaaaaaaal cant wait for ot to release

  • Is it possible to add 4k Blu-ray support with a firmware update? Because if not I can honestly say that’s a deal breaker.

  • It doesn’t come with a 4k UHD Blu-ray player? Boo hoo. Cry me a river. It’s a GAMING console. If you want to watch UHD blurays then by a 4k UHD Blu-ray player. I paid $8,000 for my 78″ 4K Samsung Curved. I want the best Gaming console out there. Not a Blu-ray player.

    • It’s a huge mistake. Sony excluded the disc drive in an attempt to drive their streaming sales. Marketing bull****. The PS4 came with a bluray player it only makes sense the marketed 4K bluray ‘pro’ system should come with a 4K bluray drive built in. It’s about the convenience of the entire package and driving 4K bluray disc sales. Not adding another black box to my entertainment center just for the hell of it.

    • why can’t it do both??

      and curved tv’s suck…

    • Well, $8,000.00 for a Samsung means that you’re just a moron that doesn’t know what to buy. No need to say something else.

  • You know we love to watch movies….so Netflix and YouTube?? Not supporting 4K Blu Ray discs is a huge oversight. I’m a huge Sony fan, but I was counting on this for an amazing mid console cycle update with the newest technologies. Xbox could have FINALLY been put to bed, but instead they’re right back in the game with many jumping for 4K Blu Ray support. You guys ALMOST released a must buy. As much as I wanted to buy it, I’ll be playing PS4 on my 4K non HDR screen. Bummer.

  • Big mistake Sony not having a UHD player the Xbox will you might have seen it as a small thing but your competition will have one it’s what sold you so many ps2/3 people still like to buy movies steaming doesn’t give the quality that a good uhd does it will effect you in future hope you release an update

  • Big mistake Sony not having a UHD player the Xbox will you might have seen it as a small thing but your competition will have one it’s what sold you so many ps2/3 people still like to buy movies steaming doesn’t give the quality that a good uhd does it will effect you in future hope you release update

  • I was also going to buy the PS4 Pro for the UHD player. As soon as Xbox One S adds support for Dolby Atmos sound I will buy that instead since it does have a UHD player. I was looking forward to having a second PS4 at home to play with the kids on separate televisions, but it isn’t worth the price without a UHD player.

  • I can honestly not care it doesn’t have a blue ray uhd player. Watching regular blue ray on my ps4 with my 4k tv looks still stunning without the uhd. If they do somehow add it in a update cool but I only want it for my gaming needs when I play.

For the people saying 4k tv are to expensive your not looking at the right time or place. 32″ 720p tvs like 4 years ago cost like $320. I got my 50″ Samsung 4k uhd tv for $799 at best buy during superbowel weekend this year and it’s originally $1099. Black Friday and cyber Monday are literally around the time of the launch for ps4 pro if u want a 4k and they still have 2 months between that time of launch for answers about why they didn’t have a uhd for pro or when they might put a update if they could.

Anyways I’ll see myself buying Ps4 Pro on day 1 of launch enjoying what I been waiting for since this whole speculation and rumors when it first showed up.

    • your new 799 4k tv probably cannot do HDR, amirte?

does it have HDCP 2.2 ?

hate to break it to you, but you are probably screwed on your purchase.

  • I’m going to buy PS4+UC4–Limited Edition Bundle–Grey Blue Colour–1TB–50Euros PSPC
Nice work there Sony but ot wasn’t worthful , anyway TOP gamers might need those two new powerful consoles so maybe you should let a bit down the price money , I mean come on 300Euros for PS4 SLIM ? Wow , that’s bad and 400 Euros for PRO , oweful.

  • IMO. For the first time in a long time Sony has shot themselves in the foot and just gave it to Microsoft. Honestly, we could all do without the PS4 pro. They should of went back to the drawing board and really taken the opportunity that the Scorpio isn’t releasing until end of next year. To beef up the GPU, CPU, RAM & STORAGE even further.

  • Hi:
SONY, I assume you will add PSOne, PS2, PS3 (maybe) Backwards Compatibility, right??? If not, you’re trying to sell Me a System that has NOTHING more that I already have.
Until BC, there is no real use to have this System.
