  • All I can say is that I am disappointed in you Sony.
First, you post the announcement in a, basically, month old blog post. Why are you being sneaky? Do you not want to hear feedback? You know this decision is wrong, right?
Second, you are increasing the price. What? You are not Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist. Stop it. Swiper no swiping. Like, what are you going to improve? Rocket League is the only game I enjoyed in the past year from PS Plus. I thought the voting selection y’all tried here and there would work, but the game selections were eh. Indie indie indie. The system is a PS4. Give games that show why you are a PS4. Why we wanted this system. Not games that should have been made for the Vita.
Third, your sales have been lackluster. I have seen better sales. Those $5 $1 flash sales. What happen to those? Don’t get me started on the repetitive games that appear on the sales.
Last, what ‘current market conditions’ are you speaking of? What in the hell are you promoting? Is this like DLC to the service? What do we get, free themes? Real answers to this increase would be nice.
I hope you make good use of the extra funds, but I cannot be a part of it. Calling it quits on the multiplayer.

    • i’m really surprised they updated an old post rather than make a new blog post. it DOES seem like a sneaky move – a way to bury the negative comments eh?

  • PS+ is a joke. Price definitely doesn’t always reflect quality when it comes to Sony products. What’s happened to this company?

  • I get to pay $60 a year in return for crappy free games and deals?!?

    Yay!!!!!!

I’ve had a PS4 for 2 years and have mostly seen indy games. Not all are bad, but we deserve better by now. I don’t want them every single month.

I see people saying how Xbox isn’t much better because they have WWE 16 this month. I’ve had my Xbox since December 2015, and I’ve gotten WWE 16, The Crew, Sunset Overdrive, Saints Row 4 and Thief. Plus two 360 games meaning I get FOUR games a month.

I don’t expect each month to be amazing on both PlayStation and Xbox, but when I’ve received far better games on Xbox than PlayStation and I haven’t even owned my Xbox for a year yet there is an issue with Sony’s service.

Unless that extra $10 goes to getting us subscribers better games, I’m not too sure I will renew. It’s not even the money that bothers me, it’s the fact your asking for more money but then give us mediocre line-ups.

  • Here’s hoping the Scorpio changes the tide towards Microsoft’s favor enough for Sony to focus less on anti-consumer practices.

    • This is very disappointing! $20.00 increase for Canadians. If the service was good I wouldnt complain but here is my problem with the increase …The free games we get every month are all indies, the server are frequently under maintenance, another thing is although the community is asking this for years we still cannot change our PSN ID… Nothing justifies the price increase

  • nows the time to not have crappy PSN+ game lineups
like you have had for the past 6+ months.

  • With this price hike will you also increase the slow bandwidth you guys have on your servers? Takes forever and a day to download a game and i have a gigabit connection. Seems to have been the problem from day one and you guys still havent fixed it! You have no problem raising prices but wont fix a simple problem. I dont have any problems with microsoft servers.

  • I don’t mind paying more but put some good games on the psn plus. Not crap!

  • PS + is to play online, all the other things are extra benefits you get, 59.99/365= 0.16, all this rage for $0.16 per day.

I believe sony is at fault because the did not do it from the beginning like microsoft, and at some point got to happen, i do enjoy my time playing, if so many people are angry why keep using the service, at the end this is a hobby if you don’t enjoy it, just stop doing it and do something else.

Btw, if you are so hurt paying $0.16 per day, good luck with a gaming pc and paying the price to get the proper hardware xDDD

    • It’s clear that those who say “it’s just $10/20 extra a year” have their parents buy things for them still. My hydro has increase $80/year. My internet $20. My average grocery trip is about $5-10 extra. All these things add up, including an additional $20 for a service that is quite poor.

I honestly hope you people who say “it’s just $x more” work for Sony, because I honestly cannot understand why anyone, the average person would defend any multibillion corporation whose only interest is in your wallet.

  • I had been thinking of canceling PS+ for a while now, and this price rise just confirms my decision. PS+ was crazy good when I first joined several years ago, but ever since the launch of the PS4, where it was made mandatory for multiplayer, it’s been steadily declining in quality. In fact, looking at my games list, there was only ONE free game that I bothered to download this entire year. That’s pretty bad.

I practically never play multiplayer as well, so Plus just isn’t necessary for me without a solid game lineup throughout the year. If I had to offer a suggestion, me and my buddies think that the amount of games offered on PS3/Vita per month should be pulled back to 1. There should be more focus put on the PS4 and putting out some triple A games for it at least a few times a year. Don’t get me wrong, I do love indies, but you’ve been relying on them WAY too much these past few years.

I still love ya to death, Playstation. Hope you guys manage to improve with PS+ and make it as great as it once was. <3

  • Price increases always suck, but in reality this one came much later than I expected. PS+ will still be worth $60 for me. It has already paid itself with the couple plus games I’ve loved and a few great discounts. Not everyone is happy with the service, obviously, but the great thing is that all of us can choose what to pay for. If you feel you made a mistake paying for ps+ make sure to not make it again. Spend responsibly, people.

  • PS+ used to be an incredible value on the PS3 that I would recommend to everyone. After the initial launch of the PS4 it has totally devolved into a paygate for the multiplayer modes of games, some of which people bought solely FOR the multiplayer. It’s really disappointing.

I don’t understand the price increase. If the service is doing well enough (demand) that you can raise the price and sales won’t decrease (supply) rather than dipping because of the total lack of value attributed to it now, it’s because the majority of those people are trying to access the locked-off content in their games that would have been free on the PS3, not getting the demos and indie-style platformers that they could get for $2 or less on the PC. Those customers aren’t going to celebrate the increase. It’s either that, or the service ISN’T doing well are you’re trying to wring out more dollars out of the few people who do still pay for Plus. In other words, either way you’re expecting us to pay more when you aren’t providing the extra value that would make it worth buying.

The “Plus” in PS+ was originally meant to be “paying a little extra for additional content and deals” and not a requirement for half of every game we buy.

    • Well then all that supply and demand remains to be seen, yes?
If sales go down and the price increase doesn’t cover it then it’s a loss. If sales remain steady then the price increase will increase their profits.

  • “while enabling us to continue providing exceptional value to our members.”

You’re just mocking us at this point. “Exceptional value.” A vast majority of PS+ users have hated the offered games dating back to 2015, and now you’re upping the price. Unbelievable. Only positive thing I can take from this is that it justifies my decision to not renew my membership a few months back. Will not be missed.

  • Well i hope they add some good/useful additions for PS+ members otherwise this price increase is going to be very disappointing

  • I’ve always been a PS+ supporter both in terms of subscribing, and recommending/speaking out for it online, but everything about this price update post is extremely disappointing for several reasons:

    1. The news was announced on online media very surreptitiously, hidden in an ‘update’ for a previous post. This really doesn’t make Playstation look good, as it looks like you are trying to be disingenuous and hide the community’s responses behind previous responses.

    2. We are told that there will be a price hike with absolutely no added benefits announced to go along with the increase. Sure, the marketplace is changing, but $10 is a lot of money, and doesn’t seem to match any ‘marketplace’ change. It’s already well known that PSN’s online infrastructure is sub-optimal–I would have expected that news like this would at least come with an initiative to improve PSN. Or at least a promise to bring more value in terms of games. As it stands, this just looks like a cheap money grab.

    3. The whole thing, from the way it was handled to the lack of any announced improvements just smacks of Playstation returning to the old arrogant Sony days, where you can price-gauge just because you have the market share.

  • I’m not gonna complain about the games. Free games, even if they’re not exactly what you’re expecting, are a Plus (no pun intended). Indies, yes, but only a couple of the games that have been given away can be considered bad or broken games. And for the $0.83 you’re paying for each game (if you want to put a number to it), you get a lot for your money.

My grief is with the state of the PSN infrastructure. Slow bandwidth for downloads, no two-step authentication, and it’s now 2016 and we can’t switch usernames or regions for accounts. Sony seriously needs to step up in this area if they want customers to keep paying to use its platform.

  • Just canceled my subscription. Thanks for saving me money Sony!

  • This is extremely disappointing. The price increase is simply unjustifiable. At Plus’s launch, the service was genuine and great. Ever since the PS4 came out, the instant game collection’s quality of games has drastically decreased. I’m not complaining about indies, but rather the abundance of them, their similar / repeating genres of puzzlers and whatnot, complete lack of triple A games. Its also ridiculous how games that were on sale find themselves on Plus for free, its ridiculous. There’s still no two step verification, no name changes, general servers being decent at best, servers going down during holiday threats, and a very scarce amount of “exclusives” that you love to claim Plus members receive. Not to mention the console itself still can’t save pictures and have them be set as our background, or download music and videos like the PS3 did. This is ridiculous, and one of the biggest rip offs. You cannot restore the beauty of 2012 Plus’ service after this.

  • Its been a while since the ps+ had an increase but it would still burn my wallet. And the games not so great even with games for the PS 4.

  • 20$ more a year and nothing to show for it??

We better start getting some AAA titles free instead of those stupid cheap indie titles that aren’t even worth the trouble most of the time. Ever since i got a PS4 (launch), the only indie title i ever really enjoyed was “Dust an elysian tale”. That’s it! I have yet to see a free title that i enjoy since then.

  • love how you sneak in the new price on an old post… great job sony!

  • Hello there;
My expire day is in May 2018 ( i renewed more than one time )

Do you mean that when i reach the cycle (May 2017), an extra $10 will be taken from my account?

    • You should probably call to check if no Sony rep. answers here to be sure, but based on how the PS+ service licenses work, I suspect you will only be charged the new rate in May 2018. Good question though.

  • For people saying to deal with the games they give us they don’t have to give us brand new 60$ games but instead they could give us old 10$ games like the order 1886 or Bloodborne or maybe GTA or maybe like a million other games that have been our for 2 plus years that have never been on Ps+ because all they give us is Indy Tash with 1-2 triple a titles a year

  • I don’t care about free games. It annoys me that they increase the price by $20 CAD a year for absolutely nothing in return except for the ability to play online games that I have already paid for. What a friggin ripoff. They already generate over a Billion dollar profit with PS+. Pure greed.

    • A billion you say?
GREED is the name of the game for businesses. They aren’t doing selling things for charity or because they like you.

  • I am okay with a price increase as long as Sony steps up their game. Pricing yourself the same as your competition means you are going to have to begin offering the same (or better) server reliability and quality. It also means that Sony is going to have to look at their competition’s “free”games. They are frequently putting AAA titles into the GwG collection and their last gen offerings are backwards compatible and are actually free in that the customer gets to keep them.

  • Im sick of this “they give you free games” argument….no they don’t…IF they were giving me free games it would mean that once I stop paying them money I still get to keep the supposed free game at no charge….another service that I wont mention already does this ….these are glorified rentals nothing more…if they at the very least gave us the ability to keep our games (only ones i care about though are rocket leagure and my ps3 games from before ps+ sucked) I would be much more willing to shell out the extra $10. Sadly that will not be the case.

    • You need to have an active membership in the other service too if you want to play their free games

    • @chrisgm516

That is not entirely true. All of their last gen games that go GwG are back compat and are free to keep even after you cancel the membership.

    • I too believe 40% in one go is too much but to say ‘nothing’ justifies it…..the CDN dollar is devalued over 25% since the launch of the PS4…there is SOME justification for SONY moving prices up … perhaps a more gradual increase would be less off putting.

    • The Canadian dollar is weak and most every product/service has increased in price to compensate. That is what business people call “justification”.

    • increase by $20 CAD because of the weaker canadian dollar, ok. but when CAD starts doing better again, will you lower the cost to accommodate? of course not.

    • When the dollar was on par, companies found other reasons to raise the price of things. After consumer backlash, some stores started selling books at the American cover price.

  • I used to comment on the blog long ago …. then got frustrated by the near absolute silence from the bloggers to interact with us users….near 900 comments, 2 comments from SONY and none concerning this update. As Donald would say, SAD!

  • I just wish we had more say so in what free games we get every month (more voting needed PlayStation). But the bottom line is your never going to satisfy every one. keeping my plus for now!

  • Because it’s more expensive, does this mean we will get more AAA Titles free with Plus?

  • Well, so long PS+. I would say it’s been good times, but well… there just haven’t been.

  • Sony is funny. The cruddy quality of the titles stays the same and the price goes up.

    So glad I didn’t renew.

  • 40% increase for what exactly ? Online play ? That was free on the PS3 already. Great games ? MEH Keeping what i have gotten for free supposedly ? Not exactly free since i have shelled more than 300$ already for it. Let’s see what Steam has.

  • Y’all (SCEA) are some scumbags. Couldn’t even have the decency to post a new article. Stop trying to play the public and keep it 100 with us. We already know you’re a business and need to make money, but don’t play the half.

  • i understand why your doing this SONY! the price change reasonable! it kinda suck for CANADA ! but i get it the Canadian dollar is pretty low! BUT PLEASE guarantee US is the CANADIAN DOLLAR GET BETTER CANADA PRICE will be more on PAR with the USA it just seem every time the Canadian dollar goes Down every goes up in prices and never goes back down even if the CANADIAN dollar goes back up this is less a SONY thing more how much Canada value suck right now but please BE more responsive to markets so IF/WHEN the cad dollar goes up enough maybe bring down price and i do understand why ur not so quick on responding to markets to make sure it stable enough to make any change cuz it might go back down just as fast! its just this year i been seeing more noticeable price hikes like ps vr nd this compare to the united stats! THANKS FOR UR TIME ! i just got a year sub last week !:) so im happy but sometime i think wow it kinda suck living in Canada for entertainment prices! and say i wish i didn’t have to pay extra on international goods! but then i turn on the tv and see trump and say thank god im Canadian! lol

    • I just tried deleting this and re posting it with out the spelling mistake but i just notice i cant delete this and re-post it anyone know how or where i can delete it and re post this with out spelling mistake

  • 10 more dollars big deal . It is fore better I’m cool with that

  • Well that’s it for me…. just turned off my auto renewal and deleted all my payment info ill be buying all my games on PC from now on. $20 dollar increase for no reason? why? so you can provide me with crappier “free” games?

  • Definitely not going to renew when my subscription runs out. I don’t care about “free” games, not anymore. Starting to realize what a scam it is to pay for online gaming.

Sony said they don’t want players to switch to PC gaming; that’s why the Neo is happening. Well, good luck with that if they continue to let exclusives slip away and refuse to take after services like Steam and GoG. What are they thinking?

  • So with the increase in price, is Sony going to be stepping it up with the quality of the titles we get as free games for PS Plus? Cause since the PS4 started, the free games have been mostly crap. Seems like consumers are getting screwed over. Wouldn’t mind the increase if we were getting great content. It’s got to the point that Games With Gold has become a better value than PS Plus and I didn’t think I would ever say that.

  • I better see this info in it’s own psblog thread tomorrow. I don’t like being toyed with.

  • I don’t mind the price increase; I just would like some better games. Some of the free monthly games are ones I’m not at all interested in; or just don’t play. Many are low Indy titles who’s price points are under $20; while the competitor is giving away older, well known games to their users. I’ve been rather disappointed with past monthly games for most of this year; not actually playing any one for more the 10 minutes times, if any at all! Where I did play the God of War game for Vita; the Prince of Persia was difficult to play, and ended up removing the game. I’d rather see more PS3 or even PS2 for old PS games as free games then bad Indy games I never wanted in the first place!

  • So long Sony, not putting up with your crap anymore. Back to pc gaming I go, the savings from no psplus and ripoff $90 titles will work out to buy a sweet rig and a ton of steam games.

  • Though Currency exchange makes it close to 80$, this feels like a huge jump for Canada, 20$. Sony better up the anty for PS+ with either better features (this should come anyways), better PS+ games (PS4 has yet to receive a AAA title released on PS4, amazing titles yes, but no AAA full price games yet. The console is 3 years old already), or just give us the damn games rather then making PS+ games require PS+. Your competitor has been providing games to their subscribers with no strings attacked afterwards.

  • Good thing I payed up my Steam account in advance. Now I can use the extra funds for the PS+ hike. Can’t wait for more “free” games. I’m sure they’re going be a lot better with all that extra money going to Sony.

  • Soooo nobody else is upset with the price increase except for me? How about you separate online play subscription and then a “full PS+” subscription? It’s either that or I cancel. I ain’t paying 60 bucks a year for this service. Those “free” games aren’t good enough. I literally only play one game online–Neverwinter. Which is fun but I’m unsure if it is worth 60 bucks a year. I feel REALLY bad for you Canada…

  • Well, since I don’t have enough money to pay monthly for this anymore I guess I’ll go back to WoW instead.

  • scummy move playstation

  • I’m okay with paying $10 extra ONLY if the quality of the monthly games improves. Other wise, I have no reason to be subscribed to PS+, I barely play online, the only reason I have Plus is for the free games, but lately that’s not even motivating me anymore considering how bad they’ve gotten if you compare to the games we used to get a couple years back.

  • cant wait for that noob, MakaiOokami, to start defending Sony on this one….

  • let me get this right. We have to pay more for PS+ just to get mostly Crap games like Tricky Towers witch can pass for a cell-phone game more then anything and to play online with games like Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 and a few others?

Man get to really hate Xbox for starting this “pay for online” Bs, and you Sony for following suit with it.

with a Cash grab like this you make the PC look way better then it all ready is.

  • I don’t like the price increase for PS Plus, it is not like we are getting any extra benefits from it, and Sony keeps using the same infrastructure model, the free games are nice, but we all know they are not really free, if you stop paying plus, bye games, games are already expensive, most games require a good internet connection to have a full experience, loyal ps plus customers don’t get any additional benefits, I mean, I have been paying it for almost four years, and sony won’t come and say: hey, thanks for supporting since the beginning, there’s a theme for you, I don’t feel comfortable paying more for the same, poor marketing strategy Sony :(
