No Man’s Sky Coming to PS4 in August

No Man’s Sky

Hello, Sean Murray from Hello Games here, working extremely hard on our game, No Man’s Sky.

The game really has come together, and it’s such an incredible relief. As we sit an play it now, and as I watch playtesters every day, I can finally let myself get excited. We’re actually doing this.

However, as we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special.

After a short delay, No Man’s Sky will launch in North America on August 9, in Europe August 10, and in the UK August 12.

Diplo on No Man’s SkyCreature on No Man’s Sky

We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right.

The universe of No Man’s Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn’t been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation.

And despite all of that, development is genuinely going well. This is the hardest working, most talented team I’ve ever worked with, and I’m so proud of what we’re doing. For all our sakes though, we get one shot to make this game and we can’t mess it up.

To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of No Man’s Sky years ago, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay.

Thank you so much,
Sean

  • As a proud owner of a NMS PlayStation community I can tell you every single person is very disappointed. A delay three weeks before release is a kick in the nuts, but that being said we’ve been waiting 3 years, what’s two more months? Feels VR had a lot to do with this and I’m sure it will be worth the wait, but I can tell you this, plenty of people would have been very happy playing it the good ole fashion way and then grabbing VR later. This delay only adds to the pressure and trust the community has on/in your team so good luck and God Speed!

  • Well good thing I let my friend convince me to buy overwatch. Between that and the new DLCs from Witcher 3 and Fallout 4, I might be able to occupy myself for most of that time.

    • I know this is probably crazy talk but you guys could get together an offline one planet demo for everyone to walk around on?

Crazy to ask i know but In order to strike out, you have to step up to the plate.

  • Thanks for the update and to everyone at Hello Games for all their hard work.

  • It can never be stressed enough that when a developer needs extra time to ensure the game is up to their level of quality this should be allowed, and even encouraged.

A late game will just be late, but a rushed game could be ruined.
I’d even wish they would go one step further and wait a bit longer if need be to try and eliminate the Day 1 Patches.

  • Why do people give a dunce about delays….unless you have no games to play.

I don’t care about delays if it means the product will be competent day 1.

So many games come out day 1 being broken and glitch fest.

  • Man this news sucks… As much as this is a big time bummer for us fans of the game, I’m sure this is a huge bummer for Sean and company at HG (and Sony) as well. I’m sure Hello Games want to deliver, not delay and disappoint. Heck, I’ve watched more NMS fan hype videos on YouTube in the last couple of years than can possibly be healthy. And speaking for myself, it was a tough enough pill to swallow when 2015 came and went without the game’s release, now this delay ads to the frustration. I know next to nothing about game development, but I know about being a man of my word, and when a release date slips, then fans can’t help but feel like they’ve been misled. I personally still can’t wait for the game and I’m sure I’ll be stuck on the hype train until August 9th and beyond, but I can certainly understand the position of those who may can’t or won’t.

  • I think as the game approached release, Sean Murray realized that No Man’s Sky has already been hyped to be MUCH better than it actually is.

He knows that he needs to try to “somehow” get the game closer to what people expect it to be. If not, then within two weeks after the release there will only be a dark room and cricket sounds, while everyone has already lost interest in it and left to play other games instead.

    • That is what happened to Mighty #9.
The hype has died for that and the developer is worried its going to bomb.

  • While I won’t be canceling my preorders, all my excitement for the game is gone. Thanks for the official confirmation, I guess.

  • No need at all for an apology. Yes I might cry myself to sleep for the next 2 months lol, but I’ll cry tears of joy exploring this amazing piece of art you guys are creating. Thank you and everyone at Hello Games for your dedication and hard work, And I can’t wait to take part in this amazing journey with you all in August.

  • I pre-ordered and am bummed. But in the same breath, we waited forever for Uncharted 4. Delay after delay. And that’s why we ended up with such a great product. I don’t want to play a broken game. Way too many impatient selfish people out there.

  • theevilsoultaker

I doubt it is… but is it still coming in june for pc?

  • Pumpkinking1973

Will PSN be letting people get a refund on their preorders like they did with uncharted 4? Don’t get me wrong I still want the game… If they need to delay it… fine it probably needs it…I just can use that money for something else rather then having it tied up for the next few months.

  • If there’s another delay, you better have Hodor at the entrance of HG…

  • To everyone who’s hating;
Show a little respect for these people, NMS is only like the biggest game ever (playable area wise) and Hello Games is made up of 10-12 people it’s amazing what they’ve got done so far, chill out and wait, you’re acting like they just canceled the game when they only pushed it back a month or so

  • All good Sean! Thank you for taking the time to get the game right. I would rather wait for a product that your team feels they have polished!

As for some of the sassy comments on here; seriously people, just plough though a couple of cool science fiction books to prep your mind for this game. It’ll be worth the wait!!

  • Dear commentors: please, for Sean’s sake, don’t be a Space D***.

Dear Sean and Hello Games: Shine on, you crazy diamonds!

  • No need for an apology, take the time you need. Game looks great, I’m really looking forward to playing when it’s ready. I still can’t fathom how a game of this magnitude and scope is being made at all, let alone with such a relatively smal team. Some sort of magicians over there at Hello Games…

  • If it make the game better so be it.

  • This is just stupid. They probably stopped rushing the game and quit focusing on getting it done because they thought they would make the deadline. NOPE! I pre-ordered this game after my friend showed me. To be honest I don’t wanna spend my whole summer vacation waiting for this to come out by playing COD and GTA. Those games are getting boring. I’d rather have a game that needs some updates and have hem update it a few weeks in over waiting 2 MONTHS. I go back to school early September. I was planning my summer around this game. But screw you Sean. You’re gonna make plenty of money from this game, so why don’t you hire a few more developers to make the June 21 deadline possible. How bad at predicting can you be if you first say December 2015 but then you say June 21, 2016, then August 9, and that’s even if that one is true. If it’s not. I’m done. I might as well get a refund on the pre-order. Everyone can call me a hater and yeah it’s hard work to make a game but that’s how things work. People who do hard work (Sean Murray) gets paid well (from all the game buys). So quite honestly I expect you to give us a deadline then stick to it. I’m just done. Screw you!

  • Take the time you need to make the game you envision. This is your project, not ours. We are lucky for you to be sharing it with is at all.

  • Some tasty tears up in here! Yeah it’s disappointing but what the hey. It is what it is. I wasn’t going to be around to play it on release date anyway. Now I will and I will savor all these tears!

    • theoneeyedpoodle

” I wasn’t going to be around to play it on release date anyway.”
He means he won’t make parole.

  • While I do support pushing back the game because they want to perfect it, I’m still very angry because Hello Games put false hope into gamers. This goes for all games; don’t set a release date unless you’re certain!!

  • Father’s Day! …I just lost my father’s Day present.

I totally understand wanting perfection. I’m a perfectionist, but this is epically a bad PR / marketing move. There’s 2 ideal times of year to release a game: Christmas and the start of summer. You guys blew it.

You could have released on-time and done some hard PR work on the bugs and patching or paint it as an open, buy-in beta.

I hope I’m wrong, but objectively, you blew it. It’s not going to keep me from buying it later on, but there’s a heartbroken Dad, a heartbroken wifey, and a heartbroken little 5 year old girl who can’t buy No Man’s Sky for her daddy.

    • “or paint it as an open, buy-in beta.”
Nonononono. This is disappointing, but I can still totally respect HG for putting effort into it and holding it to a high standard. If they pulled a Rockstar, this would be the last game I ever bought from them; I prefer the delay.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Aww…I think I hear violins playing.

  • Game delays are really disappointing, but some of these overreactions are absolutely ridiculous.

  • I can tell you one thing, no matter how bad I want a game there is NOTHING worse than getting it and having the **** mess up anyways(The Division being most recent). If it were pushed back a YEAR to get it right, I’d prefer it that way.

  • Sweet!!! This delay will allow me to save up a little more money and order on of the new NVIDIA 1080 GTX cards..

Take your time guys. I would rather have a solid first experience that was a little delayed than a disappointing experience that I got on time.

  • This is really disheartening. There was less than four weeks to go. I was in the middle of my Monty Python/Howard & Nester/Action 52 countdown. It’ll take two months just to get back to where I was. What am I supposed to do until then?

  • It’s just spore 2.0. Not going to be anything more than that. Not to mention it’s never coming out. They’ll delay it again before the August date. I will say thank you though for proving me right. I got in an augment with a fan boy of this game and was able to go back and get a good “I told you so” in on him.

  • I understand the need to push dates back to polish a game, but this close to the release date? I’ll wait patiently, but I’m not very happy about it. This is a last minute thing that sends a haymaker to the fans.

  • I am still Very much looking forward to No Man’s Sky. I hope we get some more gameplay or info at E3. Keep up the great work Hello Games!

  • I’ve waited for 2 and a half years so another 2 months is fine. I wish that it was a worldwide release on the same day instead of the UK being last, but I guess that’s down to Sony!
Respect to you and the team for working on a game that I’ve dreamt about for many, many years now.
All the best and see you all on the 12th. It’s going to be an incredible adventure…

  • Sean take your time i want a finished game i will sit here and wait as long as it takes, a month, 2 months, 3 i don’t care. This is the game of the year hell maybe decade. Also i need some cheese for all this whine in here

  • This game has been delayed how many times now? I’m still really excited to play but I sympathize with the people who are ****ed about another delay. Some people took that entire week in June off work, others pre-ordered expecting it next month but instead they get a two moth delay. It sucks.

  • EmeraIdEnderman

when i read this my heart sank but they have their reasons and their the game developers not me so they probably know more about these things than me so i say with a heavy heart i will wait through a disappointing summer till august to play a game about space! AND SEAN YOU’VE DONE ME DIRTY but i forgive you

complaints (these have to be here because im obviously mad and i need to vent):whelp there goes all my playtime before the next year of school i have nothing to do with my summer now :(
oh and yes it’s just a “slight” two month delay and now i have to go explain that were not getting no mans sky in june were getting it in august and hopfully noone wants to get a refund for the pre-order

  • That is a massive promise broken. I was so hyped Ive been reading forums and checking for news for the game literally everyday for the last two weeks.

What could have gone wrong you have to delay the release 3 weeks away from release? Arent games normally gold one month from release?

You need to be transparent with your customers.

    • I think that deep down this is most people’s subconscious concern. If Hello Games got this close to the release date and still there are serious things messed up with the programming (serious enough to merit a last minute delay), it raises a real concern that this game may have even more undetected bugs that will put it into a never-ending development cycle.

I’m a huge fan of what the game “No Man’s Sky” could be. I’m a pre-orderer and still hopeful the game will be something worth playing for months. Unfortunately, every time Sean reminds people that they are just a very small team, I get concerned. Saying something like that so often could be interpreted by some people as being a physiological form of excuse, just in case the game overwhelms them and never gets properly released.

  • Stfu people.Sean is trying his best for this and a little delay just helps them make the game better and in the end we will be more happy with the game

  • if I’m 100% honest I’m ok with the delay, i get that, at this point its hard to drop a game on an exact date or to know exactly when your game is gonna be ready, i can understand that. My issue is that Sean stated “i won’t give you guys a date until I’m sure the game is gonna be finished” so with that being said i wish he had just given us a release month and not a date that way he didn’t come off as he’s going back on his word, cause as awkward as it sounds i think a lot of people trusted sean more than most GD’s(including myself) so in a way we’re like the kids who feel we got lied to about the day of christmas lmao childish i know but true none the less.

  • Don’t get me wrong I’m still gonna sit by and wait for this damn game but in the back of my mind I’m like “ok we got 2 more months now, sean just delayed the game barely a month before release, so why the hell did he give us a damn date!?” lmao He should just say it’ll be dropping in sept. that way he’s free to pull back again(if need be) and he doesn’t get folks hopes up again lol IJS…but other than my childish complaint i get it, and i just hope when we get this game it surpasses the wait, cause i honestly feel like this one has potential to be one of the greatest of all time
on the other hand, I’m a lil ****ed off cause i gave up the Witcher III & GTA V to pre-order my #NMS so now i gotta sit by another 2months relatively bored while missing the new add ons for both games…Damn You Sean Murray! if you didn’t seem like such a cool guy i’d be mad as hell, but since you do i can only be mad at myself for falling for those dreamy eyes of yours lmfao

  • It’s turning into a common iccurence that games keep getting pushed back and back at first I didn’t have a problem with it until The gamers suffer over and over with the fact. When the game is finally released they are still full of glitchs. Seems to me these company’s need to learn to not commit to an official release date unless they have the resources to actualy commit to the date. This game was soposed to be released in 2015 so two more months seems like a major kick in the balls to gamers everywhere. If u missed a deadline at work by 14months most of us would be fired

    • Hello Games never announced it for 2015. That was pure rumour and speculation.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

“If u missed a deadline at work by 14months most of us would be fired”
That is true, but it’s HIS company. He’s not gonna fire himself.

  • I’ve been looking foreword to what you and your team have been doing for years now, as a true fan of what you are all doing at Hello Games I am glad you made the hard call man.
This is the game I have wanted to play since I was a child, finally being made real.
I’ve been following you guys threw the flood and everything, you didn’t give up then and your real fans won’t give up now.

  • I just hope that we who ordered it digitally won’t have to re preorder the game again and what not as long as I do,t have to pay for it again take your time

  • Nearly two months is not a few weeks but OK should be worth the Waite

  • Hey Sean and the gang. Thank you for your update. Of course I am disappointed, but for this game, which I have been following
since I first heard it was in development, I would and will happily wait for however long it takes.
To the grumpy ones out there…..If the game was released with bugs all over the place, you would be complaining, and because the team don’t want to release it until they have ironed out the problems you are still complaining. The devs can’t win can they?
I guess some folks just have no idea how much work goes into games and especially into such an innovative game as this one.
To you I say patience is a virtue, one some of you certainly seem to be lacking. This will never be a game you can complete in a few hours, days, months or even years. No speed runs here. Hehehe. ;)

  • Take your time, Sean. I believe you and your team. If you say you need more time, I say you need more time. Do the best game you can. As you said, you got one shot at this.

I’ll buy it anyway. Day one.

  • It’s sad to hear that the game was delayed but I definitely want you guys to take the time you need to make it amazing. I have been so excited for this game to come out since it was announced and will continue to eagerly await it’s release. Tell everyone at Hello Games to keep up the good work.

By the way, the 65 Days of Static concert in Vegas at Playstation Experience is still something that I think about. It was such a great show. I can’t wait to have that soundtrack playing as I explore ‘No Man’s Sky’ when it comes out in August.

  • You could not have picked a more perfect date for this to come out. My wife and I will enjoy our 2nd Wedding Anniversary and afterwards, I can know (with confidence) No Man’s Sky, will be right there to enjoy! Thank you and thanks to all your team for not rushing the very important step forward for the games’ industry.

  • I honestly was excited for this game, I still am. Unfortunately, the timing on the new released date just doesn’t work for me, 2 months is a long time for me, due to work and finishing my senior year, maybe for some of you it’s perfectly fine, but I wouldn’t have time to sit down and enjoy it like I would, that’s my reason for getting my money back. I really hope the best HG, and may your game be as best as possible, but it’s just not going to work out for me.

    • theoneeyedpoodle

Let that be a lessen to you. This stuff is for people with jobs.Come back when you’re finished with the classroom and have a 9 to 5.

  • Does this mean Legacy Edition will be up for Pre-Order again?

  • Is the delay because you are implementing those space whales?

  • Really? It takes you less than a month before release to realise your game isn’t ready yet? I pre-ordered the other day (something I almost never do with games) and will continue to look forward to this game. But seriously, it would be nice if more developers could actually release finished games on time. There is a middle-ground between delaying games and releasing an unfinished product – it’s called good planning. Is there a project manager on board? That could be helpful! Anyway, despite the fact that my comment sounds bitter I am excited about the game – I guess I’m just disappointed to have to wait longer having already waited a long time for this. Hopefully the wait will be worth it.
