Hello, Binding of Isaac fans! I’ve got some awesome news. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth is just about ready to launch on PS4. In fact, it’s going to be out on May 10 for $10.99.

If you haven’t heard, Afterbirth is the extremely extensive add-on for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth delivering 100+ hours of gameplay. Features include:

  • A new final area and final boss for the main game.
  • The new Greed Mode.
  • Daily Runs to compete for high scores and best times.
  • 1,000+ new room designs.
  • A new playable character, Lilith, mother of demons.
  • Eight new bosses.
  • Four new alternate chapters with specific enemy types, visual themes, and surprises.
  • 25 new enemies.
  • 120 new items (bringing the total past 525).
  • A massively updated weapon combo system.
  • New alternate soundtrack.
  • 10 totally new and awesome challenges.
  • Tons of new secret transformations.
  • Loads of new Trophies.

But enough with the lists. Here are the awesome details on some of Afterbirth’s new content.

Greed Mode

Greed Mode is a totally new game mode. It mainly involves fighting off waves of randomly chosen sets of enemies that spawn around the room. These waves ramp up in difficulty and continue to stack on top of one another until you hit wave eight, press the stop button, or die.

The more waves you string together without hitting the stop button, the higher the cash bonus. If you’re able to do it without taking damage there is another bonus in it for you. After wave eight you get a breather to cash in your winnings and the button mysteriously changes to a skull!

Pressing said skull will start the “boss waves,” an easy wave (on par with a basic boss from that chapter) and a med wave (usually an easy-level boss with a small mob). You get a lot more time to kill these waves, but depending on how fast you are there is a high chance that the second boss will spawn in alongside the first. But you can always sacrifice half a heart to stop the next wave from spawning if things are looking dire.

Once these boss waves are finished, the exit door will unbar and you will be able to progress to the next level… or you can take a chance with the “nightmare boss wave” in order to unlock the devil room door.

A single room in greed mode is 100% new, cursed rooms yield totally new surprises, secret rooms have bigger payoffs, and the content of devil rooms aren’t exactly what you are used to. In fact, all the pools in Greed Mode are totally new and have been heavily modded to fit Greed Mode perfectly.

All in all, Greed Mode will feel like a totally new experience that will not only yield tons of rewards for completing it with each character, but also feature a very unique ending that should have you coming back for more for quite a while.

Daily Runs

For those of you who have used “seeds” in Rebirth, the short answer is Daily Runs are daily seeds that are universal to everyone playing that day.

Every day, Afterbirth will generate a new “run” for everyone who owns the game to play. But what makes Daily Run different than seeds is that Daily Runs will be identical for everyone in every way.

It doesn’t matter what you have or haven’t unlocked, Daily Runs don’t play by the rules! Everyone is on an equal playing field here! If you wanna go for Mega Satan from the get-go, then go for it!

Beyond all runs being universal, Daily Runs will choose a specific character for you to play as — and everyone is forced to play as him/her/them that day. This includes The Lost. But don’t worry, those will be rare days. That said, nothing can be acquired or unlocked in daily runs. Much like seeds, Daily Runs do not yield any progress rewards, so it’s best to play the main game more if you want game progress.

The great part about Daily Runs is that we’ve linked Afterbirth with leaderboards dedicated to Daily Runs. So you can see how well you did in terms of score, time, or both!

New Enemies

Afterbirth features loads of new enemies and bosses and even some alternates to existing ones.

Little Horn, for example, is a new and much welcome “stubby” demon boss. Not only does this guy break the mold with his AI, but he also has more attacks than normal bosses. Easily one of the most fun boss fights thus far.

Afterbirth will feature five new champions! Champions in Isaac are twice as large, do a full heart of damage, have twice the life, and usually drop something special when they die.

New Items

There will be new cards, pills, runes, bombs, hearts, chests, and even a few new item types you will run into and/or unlock via one of the 10 new challenges.

New Item: Diplopia! Diplopia is a new one-use item that does something pretty interesting: it doubles items and pickups. Not all items are ones you want two of, but I’m sure some of you can think of more than a few that would be nuts to have two of.

The Friend Ball will insta-kill any non-boss enemy, trapping them inside the ball. Then you can release the trapped enemy, now charmed to fight alongside you for the duration of the room!

Dead Eye is a fan-suggested item that raises damage with each consecutive hit and causes your tears to become red glowing balls of death if you play well.

Alternate Levels

Some of the more interesting features of Afterbirth’s main game are the alternate chapters. As many of you know the game currently features alternate chapters for each existing level set (e.g. the basement’s counterpart is the cellar). Each alternate chapter has its own set of levels, themes, and enemies that are semi-exclusive to it.

We wanted to add more stuff like this without muddying things up by actually making a full third alternate for each existing chapter set. In Afterbirth, each chapter set will feature a variant that will go over the top of whatever theme you are currently playing, so regardless of if you are in the cellar or basement, there is a small percentage chance that whatever level you are in will become a new Afterbirth alternate.

Aside from how different this looks, The Burning Basement also features many different changes. There is a high percent chance that many different enemies will become “flaming alternates.” All new level alternates will feature modded stats and new attacks; there is a small percent chance that rocks will become fire pits. These seem like minor changes, but in a lot of ways these new levels will act as “champion” variations of levels, making things slightly harder but also raising the possibility of more reward. Each new alternate will also feature new music, visuals, and effects.

  • I got this for free from PS Plus and i thought it was great. I didn’t read whole thing but will this be available for both PS4 and PS Vita and if so, will it be cross buy?

    I still think Vita is such a great platform for BoI TBH.


    • LOL, just like the developers of Broforce claimed that they cancelled the game due to “technical limitations”, even though more powerful games like Uncharted Golden Abyss (year 1 game) and Killzone Mercenary good show the technical possibilities of Vita?

    • Are you really comparing the technical capabilities of a inside developed game and engine to that of a large AAA team? I think your perception is a little off.

    • Yeah … I’d prefer some frame drops rather than no game …

    • In most cases I would agree but with a rougelike I think frame rate drops would ruin the experience or your ability to properly play the game. When they designed this game and its engine, they obviously didn’t code it in a way that would efficiently use memory on the vita or 3D’s which is why neither console will get the expansion. I personally would rather play the game on a console that it works well for. Even if my ideal console for this game is my vita.

      Sikachuu, no PS Vita version is entirely based on what we consider acceptable for Isaac players. With the additional amount of resources requires for new effects, weapon combos, bosses etc, Afterbirth did not run at a performance level that I’m personally happy with.

    • So pretty much that person is saying, screw you ps vita owners. Sad day for the vita community.

    • Real shame, BOI is easily my most played game on vita. Will absolutely NOT be buying this on PS4, Nicalis has lost a customer in me. Would have appreciated it if they had been a little more vocal about it, instead of one tweet months ago, then trying to hide to so people don’t get mad at them. Obviously no one is entitled to the game just because it’s on one platform and not another, but the vita community is entitled to a little courtesy and transparency, rather than humming and hawing for months after one or two tweets about the outlook not being great. No vita, no buy.

  • This is extremely petty, but because Isaac uses a shared trophy list on Vita/PS4 and Afterbirth is listed as DLC trophies, Vita-only owners are unable to 100% the game now.

    • If you look on your vita it doesn’t list the aftermath trophy’s only the list on the psn shows that so it would still show 100% on your vita. Either way that’s a pretty petty thing to care about.

      Vita and PS4 share the same list. So it does affect players who only have a vita and can’t play the new dlc.

    • Only if you are looking at the list through the pan. If you pull up your trophy app on the vita now it will not show the trophys under vita system only the pan list as I already stated. So yes other people will see you didn’t 100% it cause they look through the pan list. Either way this doesn’t matter. On a list of reasons why I care that this isn’t coming to vita, my trophy list would be last on it.

    • It does not show up as 100…..for achievers….my 4 percent went down to a 3 percent. I intend to get the platinum but I may never get the 100 percent because I don’t have a PS4…which is unfair.

      Should have been standalone like Killzone DLC.

  • This should be a separate trophy list with a platinum instead of a add-on.

    Just how difficult it would be to 100 percent….probably takes way longer than the main game.

    It won’t affect Vita 100 percent achievers since it would be a separate list…because they don’t have the means to play the PS4 version.

  • Please please pleaaaase, I still play Isaac on Vita at least once a week, in bed before falling asleep. Hmmm, that may explain the nightmares… If you promise to eventually deliver a Vita version, day one purchase!

  • At this rate, Afterbirth+ will be released in Q4 2017 for PS4. The fact that it took 6 months to port an indie game just shows Nicalis does not care about other versions but PC. Also, we will have to pay MORE (Steam says CDN$ 8.99 right now).

  • How many people actually develop this game? If it’s less than 5 it’s kinda hard to make the argument the port takes too long. That $8.25 price on steam is actually a sale. It’s typically $10.99.

    Indie games are one of the greatest things about owning a Vita. The binding of Isaac afterbirth would be a sad thing to miss out on.

  • Is there any plans to discount this game? Steam users got this game for like 40% off, got to participate in an awesome ARG, and didn’t have to wait 6 MONTHS longer, like ps4 players did. It’s really unfair to console players if a discount of at least that much isn’t given. I don’t know if Nicalis decides whether it goes on sale, or whether it’s up to Playstation, but if it is up to Nicalis, it would be really scummy to make us wait 6 months longer than PC players AND pay more than the average Isaac fans. Some answers would be appreciated.

  • I had a lot of fun playing rebirth, but I’m not sure if I want to buy after birth. I know that it adds a ton to the game but I’m kind of bored of it. I never played it enough to get a ton of the trophies or anything, I just get annoyed with it.

  • I was going to D1P this, but no vita? no purchase.. not until it gets steeply discounted several months down the road. I truly regret purchasing the vita version of rebirth only a few months ago, now with this update, not being able to play the same experience on either console SUCKS

    sorry but this game cant be done on vita LOLOLOL as the guy said above a little game that has the most dull color scheme in gaming and straight forward level design and very very simple character design cant be done .

    but it can do uncharted or assassins creed , rocket birds 1 and 2 a game that is miles deeper and more detailed then your games also you have NFS , xcom ,resident evil revelations 2 , metalgear 2 and 3 , god of war, gravity rush , injustice , killzone , ninja gaiden , rayman , resistance , rouge legacy , sly and you think were to stupid to understand that it can easily be compatible on the vita you just dont want to code it or take a chance .

      just say you guys did not want to make the version on vita but to say it cant handle it when all the games i mentioned put your game to shame and if there was a issue its not the system its that the devs are just horrible at there jobs they cant code at all to make it fit . LOLOL love these devs how they lie or say anything instead of just saying the truth like were not competent enough at coding to figure it out and we doont want to pay for a decent person to figure it out so no vita but to say it cant handle it when games on vita put this game to shame in coding and every other aspect , what a joke i will not be buying any of your products

    • Dude, you clearly don’t have the foggiest idea what you are talking about. The dev never said that Vita “can’t handle” the graphics, or anything like that…The main game is on the Vita, and it handles it fine enough. However, he said that the frame rate drop for this DLC Add On was unacceptable, because of the number of added resources. The game played, but slower than he wanted. If you had ever played TBOI in any form, you would know that frame rate makes or breaks roguelike twinstick shooters like this. Believe me,this breaks my heart too. I want a Vita version just as much as the next guy. This type of game is perfect for the portable system, and hopefully one day we will see a port. However, to call the developers stupid and go on a rant just illustrates complete ineptitude. Almost all of the games you listed -however great they may be – were done by large development teams with a ton more resources and a much bigger team. . We understand your pain dude, just please check your facts next time. Of course, if the game HAD come out on Vita, everyone would be complaining about the horrible framerate…

  • YES!! I’ve been patiently waiting for this to drop for quite some time now. My computer sucks, but my ps4 will more than suffice. This game rules, so is everything Edmund and his team put out.

  • There are a lot of people who have this fabulous game on the Vita thanks to it being a Playstation Plus free game a while back, and there are so many that enjoyed the game. Even though the Vita’s players are few, many enjoy playing their games on it, so I really hope the developers change their minds about this DLC.

  • This is definitely a sad day for us vita be deprived of this awesome experience of Afterbirth is just terrible. Yeah I have a ps4 but I prefer to play it on my vita above every console that I have the game on. Really hoping for them to reconsider this choice even if it has to get patched later on. My finacé and I have been waiting for this for a long time and it really makes me hesitate to buy it now especially if we can’t compare daily’s or do seeded runs together..I love Isaac but this is just terrible news……

  • No Vita no buy. The game is great, I give it that, but the developers treat their buyers like garbage. The pc group that kisses up to them are the only ones that praise them. So far all there’s been from the devs is just constant trolling and ****talking consoles, specially portables such as 3ds and vita. That’s the reason no one apart from the pc community wants to support them. Thank God Enter the Gungeon is far superior now and available to all without hassle.
