Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

And if you’re attending PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this weekend, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on PS4 at the show floor:

  • Dark Cloud
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
  • Rogue Galaxy
  • The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
  • The Mark of Kri
  • War of the Monsters

We will be working tirelessly to bring you your favorite PS2 games with new releases on a regular basis, and we hope you love playing PS2 games on PS4 as much as we did making them! So tell us, what PS2 games do you want to play on your PS4?

Long live PlayStation!

  • Hello Sony staff. As a huge fan of the Playstation brand I would like to first say Thank You. Not only is this a great idea that many and I mean MANY gamer’s have been begging for, but this is also a great way to usher in all of those new gamer’s that never had a chance to play the hundreds of Playstation classics from the now Legendary Playstation 2 catalog.

My only gripe with this is the pricing. $15 seems a little steep for Playstation 2 games. A $10 price point would have been a more enticing offer to us gamer’s.

None the less, I’m looking forward to seeing if some of the Playstation 2 classics will make their way into the monthly PS+ selections. And oh while I’m at it, Here are my Top 3 requested games.

    #1 SSX 3
    #2 NBA Street 2
#3 Zone Of The Enders 2: Second Running

Keep up the good work & Happy Holidays to you all.

  • DRAGON BALL Z TENKAICHI 3 AND DRAGON BALL Z INFINITE WORLD PLZ

  • I WANT KINGDOM HEARTS RE:CHAIN AND 1 & 2, DBZ BODUKAI TENKAICHI 3, BODUKAI 3 AND INFINITE WORLD

  • This is a great start, I much rather have the option to just put my old discs into the system but I’m sure everyone does. Also they should do this for Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

  • Let’s get Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the ps4! Would buy that in an instant :D

  • Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Jak X Combat racing

  • When are the Star Wars PS2 games are being released on PSN?

  • Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World. PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  • Socom 2 with online, enough said. It was pretty much the origin of the PSN community, so you can’t have ‘fan favorites’ without it.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect would also be great, to have some great local FPS splitscreen.

  • I’ll admit this is kinda disappointing. This whole PS2 BC/Emu to PS4 thing could have been amazing. But instead it’s a “FUN” new way to buy old games they we probably already own….AGAIN. PS2 is the greatest line up of games ever so this may still wind up being a success.

You do know that the Xbox One is offering this same kinda thing for free right?

  • I have a couple question about the ability to play PS2 games on the PS4:

    1) Will I be able to play physical (on disc) PS2 games on the PS4?
    2) Can I download the digital PS2 games (that I already bought/own on PS3) on the PS4 for free?

    • Neither. That is what the stink besides Sony employees posting here is about.

    • OMG! Really? That means that I can’t play on-disc PS2 games like Budokai 3 and Hulk Ultimate Destruction? That means I have to buy the digital version of Twisted Metal Black on PS4 even though I already got it on PS3 from the Twisted Metal Limited Edition on PS3? That sucks! Sony has disappointed me for the third time (first the lack of support of the PlayStation Move, then the lack of first-party and third-party support of the PlayStation Vita (which is why I replaced it with my 3DS XL as my primary handheld game system), and now putting PS2 backwards compatibility on PS4, but not allowing us to download the PS2 game we already bought on PS3 for free, and not allowing us to play on-disc PS2 games on PS4)! Disappoint me again Sony, and I’ll switch my support to either Nintendo (once the Nintendo NX comes out and since I just bought a Wii U on black friday this year) or Microsoft (so I can possibly play on Xbox Live with my brother)!

    • If you bought the digital only PS3 versions of the PS2 classics, then you own the DRM rights to that version. I bought a couple of these titles, but frankly didn’t think they looked very good and the lack of trophy support was a nonstarter. Also, you can’t really expect your original PS2 discs to work on the PS4, right? Completely different architecture. Mr. Softy is allowing you to play certain 360 titles on the Xbone without any enhanced features. Mr. Mario Maker is allowing you to upgrade certain digital titles you owned for a newer version with a modest upgrade fee (which is a smart, consumer friendly idea). Granted, I haven’t seen the new PS4 versions, but I imagine they are going to look and play much better than the PS3 classics or, obviously, the PS2 originals. We’ll know for sure tomorrow. In any event, the upscaled graphics, trophies, remote play support, screenshot capture ability, livestreaming, is worth something, right? If you love these games, double dip, dude.

  • Yoshida-

Are you too busy working on Playstation VR to actually reply to anyone in your actual message to the “community”? You give up on the Vita and do nothing but move on to the next moneymaker as the market leader in the console space?

Is there going to be game ownership in that your are going to flip that switch you already worked on to have PS2 discs trigger a download of games you are bringing to this list, which Microsoft already did, and are you going to honor PSN digital purchases which are basic rentals dependent upon things for PS2 classics over PSN on the PS3?

Sickening. You take away game ownership and act like you are doing a favor to PS fans.

    -PS4, PS3, PS2, PSX and Vita owner

    • I agree with honkayjeezus, it’s stupid is doing this to those (like myself) who have been loyal to Sony for years. And I highly doubt that the PlayStation VR is going to be a success, honestly, I’m going to believe it’s gonna be another failure, just like both the PlayStation Move and the PlayStation Vita (which is why the Nintendo 3DS XL is now my primary handheld system). I swear if Sony keeps up with this kind of stupidity, I will either switch to their biggest gaming rival (Microsoft) or I will go back to the gaming company I started with (Nintendo).

    • Yeah, because it’s reasonable to expect Shu himself to be on here replying to angry trolls the night before a joyous celebration of all things Playstation.
