Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

    Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness
    The game had such potential back in the day and i understand it was made unfinished with bugs glitches and an awful control scheme but even if it was made higher quality, u can access all Tomb Raider games on PlayStation except AOD why? Its still plays a big part in the classics series why forget it? it was Lara’s final classic adventure, It was the 1st Tomb Raider game to come to the PS2 EXCLUSIVELY i might add. Please let us TR fans access this game once more, please

      Most are selling it for $22 used and well the cheaper the price usually the less you get with it. I still have my physical copy though…

      Yes and no. Also Microsoft is only doing 360 games which more people are likely to own. If you do not have them you can buy them digitally.

      These are much older titles in general. They also decided to add extra features more like the Wii U versions of Virtual Console games. Now to get the Wii U version you paid an upgrade fee on those you bought on Wii and the different consoles meant different amounts. I think that would be considered less harsh.

      Though the other difference is Sony seems to be updating these games and not the original people behind said titles as the comment says we went and asked the original publishers about their opinions on trophies and such.

      If they offer the discount, they might mitigate some minor backlash.

    If you guys add in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, Tony Hawk’s Underground 2, and Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland (with Spotify support) I will literally be the happiest person ever.

    Also, I don’t know how possible it is… but if you could add a radio station in to the GTA games that plays Spotify through the car radios that’d be the coolest feature ever. I don’t like simply playing my music over the game audio in GTA, I’d much rather be able to integrate it into the game.

    OMFG please please PLEASE remake the game “Bully”, I have so many memories on that game. I loved throwing firecrackers at people and just being able to be a bully or being really nice and helping out the bullied.

    Where is SOCOM? How about we look at some of these “fan favorite” games. What exactly constitutes a “fan favorite” game in your opinion? Do we look at sales? What about general interest? Let’s take a look at these games , Rogue Galaxy, War of the Monsters and The Mark of Kri. All of these games don’t fit in any of the criteria above. They didn’t sell nearly as good as SOCOM nor do they have any relevance in today’s market. Why do you consistently favor these games that nobody has ever heard of over games that kickstarted Playstation 2 online? Are you aware that the first installment of SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs has sold more units than those titles I listed above?. What about SOCOM II U.S. Navy SEALs logging in more hours than the entirety of XBOX live during it’s hayday?. Do we just forget about the title that carried the Playstation 2 in the early stages of online. The community has been wanting a SOCOM II REMASTERED for a very long time and you know this, Shuhei. Can you just give it to us straight and tell us what’s preventing you from speaking about SOCOM? We demand answers. #SOCOMREMASTERED.

    I don’t mind paying $15 for new games that’re fully upscaled into 1080p and have remote play. That I don’t mind. I’ll totally get Dark Cloud once I can.

    However, what I do mind is paying $10 for a title I may already own on PS3 as a PS2 Classic. I really do highly suggest you guys consider a discount program for those who have already purchased some games that might come out on this service, if they bought an equivalent PS2 Classic on PS3. At least chop the price down by 50% instead, as a result. That’ll make it a lot easier to swallow.

    I do hope though that this at least starts up a trend of releasing many games that didn’t reach PS2 Classics. I’d love to see Soul Nomad or the .hack series get onto here.

    Will Twisted Metal Black have online features though? When I first bought the Network Adapter for my Ps2 I was able to mail in for an online only disc version of Twisted Metal Black and continued to play that until there were only about 5 people left that actually logged on to play.

    I really hope this is a feature for the Ps4 version.

    I have been a long time PlayStation fan since the original and this is just complete bs. Sony really wants us to believe that this is a good deal. Why can’t I just put m!y PS1 and 2 game disc into the console and call it a day. That would be a real nod to the fans. I can understand not being able to do this for PS3 but not for the other ones. #4theplayers right what happened to that?

    Hey Sony, see how the Plus symbol is absent from my profile picture? Yeah I’ll reup that PLAYSTATION PLUS subscription when I see a SOCOM title make this list. If you haven’t realized already, this community is relentless and very passionate about this series. I’m sure most people who have played the earlier titles would jump on board with this $15 price, probably even more if we finally had the opportunity to play a SOCOM game again.
