Street Fighter V: A New Way to Play

Hey everyone!

We just announced some big Street Fighter V news today at the Capcom panel here at EVO 2015. There is quite a lot of information to take in, so buckle down and read carefully!

Street Fighter V Key Art

First and foremost, Street Fighter V will feature a brand new service-based approach with regards to post-launch content. With this approach come several key changes to our content strategy:

  1. The initial release is the only disc you will ever need to own
  2. All balance and system adjustments will be available for free
  3. All post-launch gameplay related content will be earnable for free by playing the game

That’s right; Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content (such as characters) for free, simply by playing the game. Long gone are the days of forced Super and Ultra upgrades! Enjoy free balance updates as soon as they become available, and find and choose the post-launch characters that you want to get.

Street Fighter V

Pre-order for Beta Access

Speaking of characters, Street Fighter V will launch with a core roster of 16 playable characters, with 4 of them being brand new fighters to the Street Fighter universe. Post-launch, we will be adding new characters to the roster on a continuous basis, which will provide new content for players to enjoy. Again, every post-launch character released will be earnable for free through gameplay!

Looking back on the Street Fighter IV series, we had always released bundles of content all at once, like with Super Street Fighter IV and Ultra Street Fighter IV. While these one-time updates did revive interest in the series every few years, it was difficult to keep players engaged for long periods of time unless they were competitive. This also punished players who took a break from playing the game, because if they wanted to start again in a few years, they would be forced to purchase an upgrade to join the existing player pool who had already moved on to a new version. On top of that, this old method also forced players to purchase all of the new content, even if only a few characters may have appealed to them.

Street Fighter V on PS4

With Street Fighter V, we want to change the way that players interact with the series, and create an ever-evolving environment for players to enjoy. By releasing new characters on a regular basis, it will ensure that there is always new content to look forward to in the short term, and it prevents the competitive environment from ever becoming stale.

Players also have more freedom in their decisions, as they only need to purchase or earn the content that appeals to them. This will also create more long-term engagement, because the more you play the game, the more you are rewarded and can earn new content. The player base is never shrunk by requiring a paid update like in years past. Players can take a break from the game, but then come back at any time and continue to play with the characters they already own, with the newest gameplay balance.

Street Fighter V

We are able to execute this service-based model by introducing an in-game economy to Street Fighter V. There are two types of currency that make the economy go round:

Fight Money

  • This is basic currency that players earn through playing the game. Once players accumulate enough Fight Money, they can use it to earn new post-launch gameplay content, such as characters, for free!

  • This is premium currency that players can purchase with real money to immediately gain access to post-launch content.

We will be using later beta phases to test the economy and ensure it works in a fair way for everyone.

Phew! That was a lot of info, so we hope it all makes sense to everyone. We are extremely excited about this new post-launch strategy, and we’ll be talking about more specific details at a later date. For now, we hope everyone is excited to start playing and earning content!

  • Looks great. Capcom/Playstation doing everything right thist ime.

    • Games as a service
      Premium currency
      Got both of those wrong.

    • that’s great and all … I also want them to make it so that the training stage is not an option in “Versus” mode so tired of that stage. … and for once … let us “rep” our countries’ flag … that weird looking “region flag” is so insulting …

  • This all sounds fantastic. Can’t wait for the beta!

Definitely picking this up now! Some of the best news I’ve heard about this game yet.

  • Justin Massongill

  • This isn’t new.
This is how it USED to be before Capcom started nickel and diming everyone.
It’s about time they went back to basics though, so good on them.

    • This isn’t how it USED to be either. SF2 and SF3 also had multiple iterations.

“Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content (such as characters) for free, simply by playing the game.”

As surprising as it may seem, this is new ^ and I applaud them for making the right choice.

    • Let’s see how long they last.

    • fivegreenfingers

no it’s not, you are confusing this with unlocking secret or boss characters that ALREADY EXIST in the game. They are talking about brand new characters that they create AFTER they release the game.

  • Waiting for the beta!

  • Also how were Bison Bucks not a thing in SF5?

  • This is an old school approach to earning extra characters. I like that it increases replay value. It’s a rarity in the era of DLC.
    I’m excited for this game.

  • Everything sounds great, big props! A couple of suggestions:
-Please make a ton of stages and music tracks as DLC, if possible one per character! In the past is was key for character personality
-Please add a small and simple cosmetic character editor to allow me to mix costumes and colors I own: skin+hair from this costume in that color, shirt from other costume in other color, pants from another in a separate color, gloves from another costume/color.

  • Extra stages sound cool. E. Honda’s hot springs, anyone?

    • As long as they keep the flashy background, lol. ^_^

I’d love to see some classic SFII Stages return.

    • Oh hell yea id love to see that stage along with the original Ryu and Ken stages. I also would love if ALEX was in this game, like omg I would love to see him.

  • Capcom/Sony

    That’s great news!

Can we now get a physical release of Ultra Street Fighter IV for PS4? 16GB is a huge file for people in UK in most areas like mine we don’t have Fibre broadband thanks to stupid BT not rolling it out.

I am a collector and I prefer physical over digital any day! Make this happen Sony/Capcom!

    • Playstation has made games that they know wont make back their investment in order to please customers. This game is funded by sony. Please stfu.

  • well, the news are good, but hey you talking about capcom and sony here, if it doesnt make them money do you think they will release free content for the entire life of the game.i can just wonder if five or seven years from now if they will still be releasing free content.

    • 5-7 years? I’ll be on the PS5 by that time. I would expect both Sony and Capcom to be on something new by then.

  • Oooh, this sounds kinda awesome – what a welcome change! Now instead of waiting for the “inevitable” Super/Ultra release you might as well jump in now since this is the only disc (or digital DL) you’ll need. That said it makes me think the initial retail price ($59) will probably not drop any time soon (if ever?).

I also *really* like the idea of being able to earn the otherwise purchasable DLC down the road. I HOPE it is not tied to win/loss record, but instead hours played or special moves launched or something like that. I DO however hope you can wager your Fight Money on a match (even ones you’re just spectating) to grow your balance that way. Yes, Street Fighter betting! :-)

  • Hoping Blanka, Dhasim, Zangeif, Dan, and E. Honda make it to the roster.

  • this sounds like they are putting in free to play microtransactions into a full priced game. yeah sure you will let us get free stuff but how long will you force people to grind until they can unlock these free stuff ?

    • This is definitely what they are doing… guess they’re trying really hard to word it differently to sell it to the people and mask what they’re really doing… seems to be working because a lot of people seem excited for this. This is not good. Software as a Service is the end of gaming as we know it.

  • Ok, I’m impressed, congrats Capcom!

The reason why Fighting games in general and some other genres are somehow declining in sales is because of recents practices. About time some companies think about LONG TERM marketing and reputation instead of quick cash but poor reputation that force future gamers to be very cautious about what they buy next from the same pub/dev.

My most profound memories about fighting games are linked to unlocking characters, colours, bonus modes, stages, endings etc. Especially characters. Things that were slowly disappearing in this new DLC Gaming Era where some kids think the best thing t unlock are virtual images with a phrases beside them (trophies, achievements, badges etc). Unlock stuff usable IN the game is so much more fun, props Capcom for trying to bring this back into gaming!

  • people are actually excited for what is essensially free to play tactics ? if you think you won’t be grinding for hours you have another thing coming.

    • This isn’t free to play though. It’s a complete game and you can earn the DLC or you can pay for the DLC. They will be investing time and money on this extra stuff. Why shouldn’t you invest if you want it? Entitled much?

    • What would you want them to do otherwise? When they release a new character you can buy it, OR you can get it for free by playing the game. Normally studios don’t just going to give you content that they put hard work into for free, but in SFV they’re allowing you to get that content if you simply play the game and earn enough credit. On top of that, they’ll give you free updates where as in the past you had to buy another $40 game just to play the latest balance updates and experience any of the new characters. F2P sounds negative, but in this case, this is a very positive thing because it sounds like it’s being done right.

I’m excited for SFV, think I might preorder it!

    • I’m guessing you never played fighting games back in the day when people worked to unlock stuff in fighting games. Would you rather be charged for new characters or work to unlock them?

    • Gotta grind to get better, so if you’re serious enough that you want extra characters, you should be grinding anyway. XD I’m the other thing that is coming.

    • So you want it to be free and easy. Like a slut? Either you pay or you work for the privilege. Sounds fair. Pay for those who cannot wait and play for those who have the skill and patience.

  • Saw it earlier in the thread, must agree- one of the in-game currencies must be Bison Dollars. (Or Vega Yen if you want to open that particular can of worms.)
Search your feelings, you know it to be true!

  • My Fight Money!!!! I hope some or all transfer over to the actual game for basically being a beta tester

  • This is certainly welcome news! I think it’s great that devoted players will be able to unlock content simply by playing through the game. I always thought this would’ve been a good feature to have in SF4. It would have been nice to be able to “earn” new costumes for your favorite characters, rather than having to purchase them. I just hope the requirements to unlock content in this manner will be reasonable.

  • This is a great idea and I hope others copy this business practice! That said, street fighter requires a level of dedication that I just don’t want to or cant give to a single game.

  • A service model? I was liking everything in this post until the very end where they mention virtual currency! Which means things come to a huge grind to earn your free content and or unlockable players. We know how well this free to play works. Just hope paying À la carte with zenny doesn’t cost us a fortune. Otherwise waiting for Ultra to happen one day might be best. It will be a long wait.

  • Great job, guys.

  • all I want is abel and sakura.

  • This. Is. Great. Instantly interested (well, okay, don’t have a PS4…). I’m sure there’s plenty of less competitive players who are now willing to jump in at launch, rather than wait for “Super Ultra GOTYs”. Sterling would be proud! (Okay, sue me, I caught back up on the Jimquisition this week.)

    Now…announce Oro, Q, and Twelve?

    • Oh, a suggestion and a concern: If not already, could you pay partially in Fight Money and in Zenny to unlock things? And, when you unlock things, will it be tied to your save file, or to your PlayStation Network account? Meaning, would getting the content through Fight Money look the same, business=wise, as getting it through Zenny, such that you can, as in App Store parlance, “restore your purchases” and get back what’s due you?

  • Just hope we are not nickel and zennied to death!

  • SOLD! Now I’ll definitely pre-order this game. I’m very happy with the news. This is how you treat your community and make a fighting game. Thank you for this.

  • Fight Money? Balrog confirmed.

  • Now just get rid of the stupid plus requirement and this will be a solid pick up.

  • Will there be a story mode?
I always thought a good story mode (like in mortal kombat 9) would enrich a lot the SF universe.

  • That’s insanely boss. SFV is shaping up to be amazing.

  • Took them long enough. I played a few of these, but never got really invested in the series just for the reasons they mentioned in the article. This is definitely a surprising turn of events for Capcom.

  • Content be unlocked by playing the game… Hmm, and does that mean a ‘free’ system like that of Gran Turismo 5? Where you have to no life for a year to unlock things or you can buy them overnight in the Playstation Store. I really liked how in Tokyo Jungle you could unlock nearly everything by playing the game and it wasn’t a complete grindfest.

  • 1. The initial release is the only disc you will ever need to own

But of course this means that they will be releasing updated versions via discs, you just won’t need to purchase them if you already bought the launch disc. Just saiyan

    Can’t wait for the beta!

  • I wonder if we’ll be able to unlock new costumes for free as well.

  • That thing about the first release will be the only disc “required”. Isn’t that similar to how they put out Super Street Fighter IV and then out out a Arcade Edition later on disc as well as a DLC update?

Is this what they really mean or is there really not gonna be another disc release and instead exclusively have digital updates to the Super, Ultra, Omega, Ultimate, etc versions?

  • I pre-ordered my Street Fighter V at GameStop for PS4. My favorite character is Rose and I’m waiting for her to be added to Street Fighter V because she’s the 3rd female player after Chun-Li and Cammy White. And I wish that Capcom can add Rose’s master from the UDON Street Fighter comic to be new in the game. And also add Gouken to SF5

  • To unlock the content, Capcom is gonna make some extremely difficult achievement where a small percentage of players are good enough that they can unlock for free. The other option is still to pay for DLC. The game version free upgrades is a huge improvement in the series. It is a big step in improving the series.

  • Love the concept to this. Totally awesome. I’ll def. purchase the characters that I love using but for the others, I’ll just use zenny on them. It’s similar to like Marvel Heroes on the PC. Love it man, if done right, it’s going to be awesome.

  • Well, we’ll have to see how everything is actually implemented in the end and how well this works. If it’s implementation is right, this is a huge step forward in repairing Capcom’s unanimously bad reputation in the DLC and half game upgrade department. It’ll definitely get me back on board.

  • only thing I’m not very happy about is the initial roster.

    16Character (4 are new)

looking at trends of DLC, i could be waiting YEARS for my favorite character(Adon) to be playable. i will no longer be skeptical if Capcom comes out with some sort of release schedule.

Maybe 2 new characters a month? 1 new character a week? i just don’t want the end of 2016 to roll around and they only released 2 characters.

    • Rumor is there’ll be 2 DLC characters at/around launch. Beyond that I’d expect a single new character every 2-3 months. Yeah, MKX already has 4 DLC characters, but I’d guess NRS’s development philosophy is more front-loaded than Capcom’s is.

  • sounds like a new way to rip me off. 79.99 canadian and all i get is 16 fights?sure the dlc fighters will be free but those will take months and years to release. why wouldn’t i just wait 2 or 3 years and buy it for 20 bucks?

  • CAPCOM should have been doing this from the beginning. Don’t try and sell it like you revolutionized the wheel. Patches and updates should just happen. And Unlockable Characters are nothing new. EVERY fighting franchise needs to go back to that practice. Vampire Savior 4, a new Cross-over game is news. Stuff that used to be Sega Saturn type complaints that can be fixed now isn’t.

  • i hope doesn’t end like the free to play tekken on psn… you can unlocked everything free but grinding like crazy

    • the problem with Tekken Revolution was the 5 free plays per 2.5hrs. you can buy premium coins, but then its not “free-to-play” any more. So grinding takes months if you don’t play every 2.5hrs. I only play those 5 freebies per day on average.

SFV will be a big disappointment, if it turns out like this Tekken model (which it doesn’t sound like at all).

  • Going to get a PS4 just for this.

Hopefully PSV will get a port too.

Come on Sony and Capcom take my MONEY!!!

  • I would play for years to get Karin in the game.

(P.S. Please don’t make me wait for years to get Karin in the game.)

  • So for every game in the past with new characters we had to buy new versions of the game to get them. The companies have to make these characters and spend money on them so it makes sense that it cost money again. Then we get DLC and Capcom actually releases the content for much cheaper than what it used to cost and people complain. Capcom offers the ability to unlock them for free by llaying the game and people still complain.

Forget you people. If you want free, stick to the crappy mobile games and get out of here. If you have to play online for the characters which likely losing means you get far less, then it takes you longer. Too bad so sad. Or you can pay to get them faster. They still have to put in the extra work to support the title.

So if this is going to cause you to complain, it is better if you do not play so none of the people who actually enjoy games have to hear you whining online about how you suck so bad it takes you too long to actually get the prizes to unlock someone.

  • I wish that Capcom can add Rose’s master from the UDON Street Fighter comic to be new in the game. I think to see how everything is actually implemented in the end and how well this works. If it’s implementation is right. I’m very happy with the news. This is how you treat your community and make a fighting game.

  • Hoou how come I missed this post?….saw people talking about it but it was pretty hard to believe, gotta say its still hard to believe but also gotta say its good to read something like this.I really hope this is true because this is how all DLC should be,”pay if you want or earn them with hard work”,with Sony in capcom’s side this might happen indeed, well I really hope this happens and that other devs start to embrace this alternative take on DLCs.SF5 growing on me more and more….this might be the only SF worth buying the 1st version.
16 characters is too few though….it looks lame as hell was expecting 30 or such….AT LEAST.
