Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty Out This Week on PS3

Hello! Twenty years ago — way back in 1994 — we at Oddworld Inhabitants started working on our first video game, which originally had the name of “SoulStorm.” It was later retitled to the name Oddworld fans now know best: “Abe’s Oddysee.” A story-based atmospheric cinematic platformer, Oddysee would go on to define the Oddworld brand — humor, epic art, great playability, and a plot that resonated far deeper than it appeared on the surface.

Thankfully, our unassuming, hapless hero Abe captured the hearts of PlayStation gamers when it was released in 1997 — and last year, the ground-up remake Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty managed the same feat on PS4, a game that really connected with critics and gamers alike.

New ‘n’ Tasty is an ambitious project for us. While it’s based on Oddysee, New ‘n’ Tasty doesn’t use a single line of the original source code; there are no visual elements recycled; most all of the audio was redone from scratch and even the cutscenes were completely re-built.

And, of course everything is now in full 3D, with dynamic lighting, responsive AI, and ragdoll physics for added hilarity.

That all means that every version of the game needs love, care, and dedication to make it look, feel and play the best for that platform. We’ve taken everything on board regarding the PS4 version over the months since release (including the addition of classic “old-school” controls) and are now ready to announce that the PS3 version will be out this week.

New ‘n’ Tasty is a game forged very much by our fans. Our fans helped name the game, voice acted as Mudokons in the game, and helped name the PlayStation Trophies — they even decided which game we should actually make in the first place. So this latest Oddworld title is very much our way of saying thanks for the years of dedicated support.

We’re really excited about the PS3 version. The developers at Just Add Water in the UK have worked tirelessly over the last few months, and all the hard work and dedication has resulted in a faithful version of the game, standing up nicely against its PS4 sibling.

New ‘n’ Tasty will be yours to download from the PlayStation Store this week — and remember it’s cross buy with other PlayStation formats of the game.

Stay Odd!

  • Lorne, thanks for the great news. I don’t have a ps4 yet but looking forward to playing it on ps3. Also loved you on the podquistion. You should do that more often

  • Caddiacrus enthusiasm for the series makes me want to try an Oddworld game. Hoping the Vita version is still in the plans.

  • I got the PS4 version when it was one of the free PS Plus games, will I be able to download the PS3 version for free as well?

  • Waiting for the Vita version, that’s where I want to play it :D

  • awesome , I have the ps4 version too from playstation+ so can’t want to get the ps3 and hopefully soon the psvita version too
is it a separate tropy list for all 3 versions ? not that it matters but I just wonder if you’ll be earning the trophies again or not

  • When this game originally came out in 1997, it was way ahead of its time, and the plot definitely resonated with me. It was great to see one of my favorites get the modern treatment on ps4, and putting it on ps3 is a great move as well. Here’s to Vita support, and the Quintology!

  • What about Vita Version ????

  • Sadly i don’t have a PS4 just yet. But this is very exciting news for me. I’ve seen the trailer and i’m amazed on how the remake turned out to be. I still have the first game and 2nd on my PS1. It just makes me think what would Oddworld 2 would be like if you remade it. But i can’t wait :)

  • It’s really a shame that Abe wasn’t included in PlayStation All-Stars. I don’t see why they wouldn’t accept him, but oh well.

  • Any news on the PS Vita version?

  • Now make this PS4 user happy and fix Shareplay, Results Too Low reading for a person that has 50 download and 5 upload should NOT be seeing that message!

  • So psyched for my nephews, who currently only have a PS3, to be able to play this.

I’m curious how many of the optimization issues you ran into were things that Unity themselves had to fix versus you guys in your own code.

On Vita, I notice that Kick & Fennick forces a “no network” mode to get back some of the RAM and CPU/GPU clock — just like Stranger’s Wrath would. Does the latest Vita update that “gives back” extra RAM a help to porting complex Unity-based games like this one? Or do the primary challenges exist elsewhere?

    @10, Abe in PlayStation All-Stars is a *great* idea! Maybe we’ll still get a PS4 version…

  • I have it on PS4, but I can’t wait for the Vita version so I can bring it on the go. Any news on Vita release date?

  • Definitely worth playing if you haven’t!

  • When will we be able to pre-order the Vita version?

Anyway, looking forward for new n tasty and exodus HD. Oddworld is one of my favourite franshise.

  • I just wanted to thank you for having the DLC on sale when the PS4 Version was given away with Playstation plus.

It seems like DLC is rarely ever on sale, it’s always the base games on sale.

  • Please tell me this will be free for PS+ users that got the PS4 version. I don’t have a PS4 yet and I want to play this. So getting the PS3 version would be incredible.

    Brilliant! Free!

  • My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can’t believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do…

  • Picked this up when it launched on PS4. Also snagged a copy on X1 and will do so again when it hits Wii U. Good to see the PS3 version coming and can’t wait to see how it is on Vita =)

  • All hail king Lorne!!! What’s up dude!!! Thank you now and forever for making Oddworld a part of my gaming memories yesteryear and this year! Seriously I mean that! But you probably hear it All the time. .. and rightfully so! Staying Odd, sir, and wishing you the best!

  • I’m odd in!

  • I’ve always loved the Oddworld series! Very fun game and although “New N Tasty” is just a remake of the original, it’s still quite fun because they’ve added some new twists and puzzles.

  • Now can we get “The Lost Vikings”! LOL
