Final Fantasy XIV Patch 2.5 “Before the Fall” Now Live

Greetings, PlayStation gamers!

My name is Matt “Bayohne” Hilton and I’m on the Final Fantasy XIV community team. We’re extremely excited that Part 1 of our latest Patch 2.5, titled “Before the Fall,” is now live! As with each major update, there is a lot of exciting content to tackle and I’d like to introduce PlayStation Blog readers to some of the major points to experience.

First off, if you haven’t seen it, check out the Patch 2.5 – Before the Fall trailer!

We’ve got new dungeons for you and your fellow adventurers to challenge, including the massive “Keeper of the Lake!” Here you’ll be tasked with climbing inside the wreckage of a giant Garlean airship that was destroyed by wyrm lord Midgardsormr. The remains of the wyrm lord are still wrapped around his defeated foe to this day…

The final chapter of the Crystal Tower story also makes its debut and sends players into the World of Darkness, where familiar Final Fantasy bosses await. Will your alliance of 24 adventurers be able to overcome the Cloud of Darkness?

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 2.5: World of Darkness

The primal elder Odin has been spotted once more in the Shroud and adventurers have been asked to investigate. You know what that means? It’s time to form a party to try and take him down! This special battle was originally created for our global fan events, but now it’s available for everyone to try — and it’s even harder than before.

Of course, everyone’s favorite Manderville man makes his return as well! Hildibrand — agent of enquiry, inspector extraordinaire — is hot on the trail of the phantom thief and it’s up to you to assist in solving the case! It seems that Gilgamesh has returned with even more arms than before… each wielding a different weapon, too! Maybe we should talk this out???

We’ll also be launching Patch 2.51 in February, featuring the Manderville Gold Saucer! If you’re a Final Fantasy VII fan, you may find a lot of similarities here from the Gold Saucer there! Mini-games, chocobo racing (that you’ll actually control yourself!) and even a full version of the Triple Triad card game from Final Fantasy VIII will be playable! (I can’t wait to spend a ton of time here… fighting bosses and saving the world can wait a bit!)

As I mentioned earlier, this is just a look at “Part 1” of our Patch 2.5 release. Before the Fall Part 2, set to release in March, will conclude the main storyline that began with A Realm Reborn and prepare players for the release of Heavensward, our first expansion!

This is just a brief look at what’s available to play and there is much more waiting for you to experience. What’s that? You don’t currently play FFXIV, but you want to try it out? Well, perfect, because we have a 14-day (get it?) trial available for free on PS4 and PS3! It’s a great opportunity to jump into the realm of Eorzea and take the first steps of your adventure!

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to start tackling some of this new Patch 2.5 content!

  • I’m actually in the middle of downloading the updates for the free trial. Looks like I have to buy it now though, how can anyone resist Triple Triad and Chocobo racing!?

  • Epic game! If you are on the fence I highly recommend you give FFXIVARR a chance. Tied with Shadow of Mordor for my favorite PS4 game right now. Thanks for the update SE and keep up the phenomenal work!

  • I really, really can’t wait to get home from work tonight. I got on when it went live this morning, flagged the two new dungeons, opened up WoD in the Duty Finder, then had to get myself and the kids ready for work/school.

I can’t wait to see where the new main scenario quests go (so many theories, especially with Ul’dah) and the new mystery trial that’s been teased, though I’m sure that’ll be spoiled before I even leave work today. Also, of course, more HIldebrand, and unlocking that pose. It’ll be cool to see my Lalafell doing that pose. :)

Keep up the great work over there, you guys are doing an amazing job. If anyone runs into a crazy Lalafell on Hyperion named Gorvi Velgin, well, that’s me. :)

Oh, and please please please please please pass along that it would be really nice to be able to have our chocobos out while queued in Duty Finder. Like, really nice.

  • I need to get better with the controller. I play on PC and PS4, but I work on the PC all day, I much prefer PS4 for gaming on the couch after the work day is done. But man do I fumble things when it comes to targeting with the controller. I’m afraid to do a dungeon that way… figure I’d get booted!

Gotta get more practice I guess.

    • Two tips that helped me a LOT for targeting with a controller:

      1) Hold L2 or R2, then press L1 or R1. This will cycle through enemy targets on the field.

      2) Hold L1 and press up or down on the D-pad. This will cycle through everything on your enemy list — invaluable for tanking!

  • I’m all for the game, I really am! I love the updates, I understand why its a Pay-Bi/Monthly to get such wonderful updates, but I wish I could find a place to BUY TIME CARDS D: I don’t like going online to buy it and get it mailed to me (THANKS GAMESTOP!) and I am always up for Golden Saucer Triple Triad. Wait… you don’t like it? GET OUT OF HERE CLOUD!

  • Not sure why it isn’t mentioned here but was in the extensive patch note. PS Move support is also being added in this update for the PS4 version. With that and all the other great stuff, this is an amazing patch. Will definitely try the Move with this. Though I’m sure it’ll be difficult to get use to.

    • Sorry I missed it, but there was a ton to cover in such a big patch as I’m sure you can imagine.

Be sure to report back what you think about it after you try it out!

  • i wish this title was cross buy! =/

  • @7 Can’t you still upgrade to the PS4 version for free if you have the PS3 version? I thought that was a thing?

  • @Dragonchasers in the settings for the controller (or targeting settings) there’s a way to switch your selectable targets by using the L1 button with a face button. L1+X is for party members only and is what I use as healer. Its also customizable so you can select the things you’d like to target. Pretty handy for the controller.

  • @Perrandy / @Gorvi
It’s not quite cross-buy but if you buy FFXIV for the PS3 you can upgrade to the PS4 version for free until March 31st.
However, if you do upgrade you’ll be unable to play the game on your PS3 afterward.

If the link above doesn’t work, Final Fantasy XIV dot com will take you to the game’s site. If you hit the Topics button and go to page 2 you’ll find a post about how to upgrade.

  • Still can’t pay with paypal. How many months has i been since you guys promised you were working on it.

    • We recently implemented PayPal for Crysta purchases! And Crysta can be used for all aspects of the service (subscription time, world transfers, optional items, etc.).

  • purse317 – go to Mogstation – click on add crysta and you can pay with Paypal. I believe they added it a month ago.

  • The store says I don’t own FFXIV but I had bought the PS3 Collector’s Edition and did the PS4 upgrade. It’s been like this ever since that free trial came out. Please fix it

  • Thanks for the tips Justin Massongill & IGoDur — I’ll check them out!

  • Ah, if only I could actually login to my Square Enix account, then I could give this game a try. Alas, two attempts at account creation and have never had them verified or gotten the verification code in my email.

  • Vita version when Square?

  • Matt thanks to the earlier reply to my paypal comment. Glad to see their is a way to use paypal to pay for subscriptions. Now please understand it has to go. Buy crysta to then use to pay for my subscription is a bit much.

Finding out how to do so was a pain. It turned one friend of mine off completely. Rnewing a subscription via paypal could and should be much simpler. Other inferior mmo’s do so. Luckily with a great deal of persuasion (me paying for one month for him) my pal is back onboard but we do wish things were simpler.

  • Hey Matt,

This is such an amazing game!!! I wanted to ask if you guys consider a 6 month or 1 year subscription program with a discount, say 6 month will cost you $69.94 ($10.99 per month) or 1 year will cost you $119.99 ($9.99 per month)?

I wanted to ask if you guys would consider on making “Dynamic Themes” and “Avatar Pictures” for the PS4. Your game would look cool displayed on everyone’s PS4.

  • This all looks very impressive. The Gold Saucer is going to be amazing!

  • Wanted to try out the free trial before I decided to sub again since a lot has changed since last I played but I can’t as I’m already registered? Maybe I can just way until a free weekend or something I guess.

Anyways the game looks fantastic and I wanted to try out Ninja and all the new quests. You guys have added a ton of stuff since I last played, if any MMO deserved a subscription its this one.

  • Thank you Matt Hilton for the notice on the free upgrade to PS4 makes me happy that i can also transfer my FF14 over to PS4 as i didnt want to have to buy it all again

  • Does this game have impossibly hard and complicated raids, like those in Destiny?

  • I was going to buy this game today. I swear the PS4 store said that the sale ended on the 20th, which is today. Today is my birthday, and this was going to be my gift. I see on here it says the sale ends on the 19th, but is there a way to submit a ticket? I want to make sure that I am not losing my mind, and that it actually said the 20th, and if possible I’d love to still get the game at the discount.

  • Answering to #18 GrafUlrich88

There’s already a Final Fantasy XIV PS4 theme (I currently have it installed on my system) but so far it has only released on the Japanese PSN Store.

  • Finished Keep of the Lake last night. Hopefully doing World of Darkness tonight. That raid looks incredible!

  • Well, tried out the Move Controller in this update and everything worked fine but there was a flaw that cant be overlooked. On the dualshock 4 when pressing the touchpad it allows to reach the chat box or the recommendations window but on the Move controller there was no way to do this since they didn’t assign that a button on either the Navigation or Motion controller… Anybody know where I can report this so it’ll be fixed later on?

  • Just about everything in this post makes me wish I was dedicated enough to justify paying a subscription fee. Holy crap, FFXIV, how did you turn around so hard you left not just your original version’s orbit, but it’s damn solar system. Lore, classic bosses (Tiamat, there!), Girugamesh, and a Gold Suacer WITH TRIPLE TRIAD?! *faints*

  • thx… nice update!
some regular rants..Please give us an option to increase the size of the NPC dialogue box. Not the regular the chat box. those freaking small NPC dialogue boxes are supposed to tell me the story. but instead they are killing my eyes…

  • (Oh wow, my typing was atrocious…)
