Rock Boshers DX Out Today on PS4, PS Vita

Hello! Two weeks after launching Aqua Kitty DX on PS4 and PS Vita, we have another title pumped full of retro nostalgia — although this time it goes beyond the 16-bit era, all the way back to 8-bit days!

Rock Boshers DX: Director’s Cut will arrive on PS4 and PS Vita today, with cross buy and cross save support.

What’s the Story?

A young Queen Victoria, bored and looking for adventure, dresses up incognito and sneaks onto a transport shell headed to Mars.

But oh no! Upon landing, all the travellers are rounded up and put to work deep underground in the Martian mines.

Why? How? Who is behind this dastardly plot?

Victoria must battle her way across Mars, and attempt to find a way home whilst collecting special food items as she goes.

Did Someone Say “Scones?”

Yes! Tea, Cheese, and Jammy Scones, the 3 most important foods for survival, are spread about each level, sometimes hidden and at other times VERY well hidden.

Good hunting is rewarded, of course, unlocking mini arcade games.

Action Ahoy

A small, twin stick adventure shooter, Rock Boshers DX mixes top-down and side-on perspectives on different levels.

Battling across the planet, you’ll encounter all manner of enemies and sometimes extra weapons such as Coal Rockets or Steam Lasers to help you on your journey.

Such Color, Such Beauty!

With supremely authentic, hand-drawn, retro pixel art, each level is created from a mind-boggling palette of 15 colors. There’s even a screen zoom function to further immerse yourself in the chunky pixel goodness.

Mini Arcade Games

Beyond the main game, unlocking the arcade gives you access to four different arcade style games:

  • CHEESE DREAMS sees you chasing down a giant lump of Cheddar.
  • AQUA KITTY is a mini spinoff from the DX version, where you must protect a milk pipeline.
  • GHOST PYRAMID places you in the shadow of some ancient Martian pyramid as you dash to collect gems.
  • And finally BOSHTEROIDS lets you take to the stars in your very own spaceship.

PS4 Battle Mode

Have more than one PS4 controller? Great, the PS4 version has an exclusive four-player local battle mode. Play as Victoria, Darwin, Ada Lovelace, or Lewis Carrol and duke it out in a range of different fighting arenas.

Historical Accuracy

So in summary, you get to play through a small chunk of 100% accurate history from an alternate universe, as well as both PS4 and PS Vita versions, for one low price! There are Trophies to earn, leaderboards to compete on, and a cross save function to let you easily switch between platforms.

We’re pretty excited to launch our second PSN title in as many weeks. That’s all for now — if you have any questions, please pop them into the comments below.

  • Congratulations on your release! Looks like a good game for the Vita!

  • Cool looking game. Can’t wait to play it.

  • Hey there! Really sorry abou the off topic but… wasn’t the holiday sale week two supposed to start today? I was looking forward to buying some games before I go to work =P.

Sorry for any inconvenience and congrats for the game.

  • @3 the PSN Store updates around 5 PM Eastern every Tuesday. Its the same EVERY week. Expect to see a post around then

  • Is this also available on phones for less money?
Tired of the Sony tax and will not support it.

    • Hi there – no its not available on phones. There is an older version of the game which we made for PSVita (under PSMobile, which happens to run on a minority of Mobile devices) but it was never a `mobile` game as such, and this version has had a huge overall too. Hope that makes sense :D

  • @4 sales are sometimes posted on monday, thats probably why he asked. I was looking for it too.

  • @4 Thank you. I didn’t know that, dude. New to psn. =)

  • Totally dig the retro vibe the game dishes out

  • Can’t wait to buy a new Vita for Persona 4 Golden! Gonna give this a try to :)

  • I love TIKIPOD,I purchased Aqua Kitty DX on my Vita and it was amazing, now looking for this game but please be cheap.

  • @5 yowzagabowza

I don’t think you understand how tax works my friend. Sony doesn’t tax anything. It comes down to where you live in the continental US. Sony is not the government. I don’t get taxed where I live. :D

  • @11 Ghostwize

Not everything is to be taken literally.

  • @11 He’s referring to some PS4/Vita games that are also available on iPhone/iPad, but for less money and get more post-release support on those platforms. All TellTale games (Walking Dead, Back to the Future, etc) are a prime example: we (PlayStation gamers) pay more for less quality and support. Some developers will quietly blame Sony policies when pressed for explanation, but I think there’s plenty of blame to be had on both sides.

I supported both this and Aqua Kitty on PSM, and liked them both (and Life of Pixel!). I’m not sure what Vita or PS4-specific features these games now utilize that would make me want to “upgrade”, especially since there’s no mention of a discount for previous PSM buyers.

    • Hi – unfortnately there is no way to discount for PSM buyers.
The PS4/Native Vita version has been totally overhauled – all levels made wider to fit the screen better too. There are new levels too, a new weapon type, extra graphical details, space levels etc.
Its not a huge game no, but much better rounded now we think.

  • I cannot copy suikoden 2 to my psp why it says on store playable on ps3 psvita and psp it needs fixing urgently waited 7 years for this to come on psn thanks sony

  • @13… the comment about the Telltale games is factually inaccurate. The price per chapter is the same across the board ($5), regardless of platform. The only difference has been that Telltale has offered the first episode for free, after the entire season is out, since they have no way to promote the titles properly on mobile (like a physical release, or a “full season” bundle).
There have been some mobile titles that end up costing more, but your paying for the conversion to the new platform, as well as physical controls, rather than touch. There “tax” is a console tax, since these platforms are significantly more expensive to develop for, especially for a small dev, or team.
…of course most consumers don’t care about that… they just want to complain that everything isn’t free.

  • I thought this was spectrum inspired because of the coloured sprites, which was before bits were considered. More of a console marketing thing.

Anyway, this is looking awesome. I had the PSM game and will grab this.

  • I had not heard anything about this game and just happened to see a tweet on the PlayStation twitter account. Super glad I did, this game looks great! I will be picking this up for sure.

  • I tried this game tonight and instantly liked it. It really seems to get the ZX Spectrum look right. Crazy seeing this on my TV knowing it’s on PS4! But very cool! Love that Sony is open-minded to games like this. It seems to have a lot of extras in it, too…
