Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.
20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!
Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.
We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D
But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!

I’ve been itching to get a PS4 and this seems like my calling. I’m aware we can pre-order tomorrow, however when will they exactly ship?
Main has Sony really been entertaining us for 20 years man that’s along time I remember when I first purchase my PlayStation one I stayed up all night playing it now 20 years later this is history and I’m definitely getting another Ps4 because this is a peace of History!

I am big fan of SONY i have everything from sony all PS platforms and acessiories. but I have question about this edition . where can I buy it if I am from Europe . small country Slovakia. or buy more then one because my coutry is bad in this selling . we have new PSN witch starting one week ago . I definitely will try to get one of these. I hope you don’t let people order them in bulk. 2 at most per person, or it’ll just be another collector’s item ruined by scalpers.

i hope thats not true. that would be disappointing if they give the psx attendees a heads up and leave the rest of the fans out in the cold with few to pick from. i refuse to go to ebay and pay inflated cost.
Oh man I hope I am lucky enough to get one of these!! I already have a ps4 but this would be extremely close to my heart.. the ps1 was the official start of my gaming addiction lol. It would truly be something I treasure.
Crash bandicoot was my first playstation game, second was Final Fantasy 7 the memories oh the memories.

I so want one of these bad boys, I’ve been a Playstation fan since the first one came out. My first game was medievil and I really had a great time with my ps1. Man the memories. Happy Brithday Playstation :D and hope I could get one just in time. I have a question though, is it gonna be online only or will we have it in stores too?

Will the samething be done in USA? And WHY are “some” people getting the console already without buying it and why like “IGN” and “Gamespot” get one too? We The Gamers support you guys more but not everyone will have the pleasure to buy one. I am disappointed.

I am too excited for this, idk if I will even sleep! I was going to get a PS4 for Black Friday, but something told me to hold off on it. Now I am glad I did, I must have this!!!
Sony I have been a fan since the 90’s! I love you guys, playstation has been there through my good times and bad times, my awkward teenage years, girlfriends, marriage, you name it and I coped with a playstation controller in my hand. I waved the playstation flag during the console wars and will continue to root for your company all the way!I want of these 20th edition PS4s to commemorate our relationship. Please save your biggest and loving fan one. I get paid next week and I feel like I will miss out since it releases today. Please help me out.

Why don’t you guys do a ps1 theme ps4 that isn’t a 20th anniversary edition so others can still have the opportunity to have the ps1 theme.
