Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.
20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!
Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.
We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D
But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!
Our friend Sid Shuman has some details in the video above, so be sure to check it out and let us know what you think.
I look forward to celebrating the anniversary and all things PlayStation with you this week in Las Vegas at the PlayStation Experience.
Thanks for a great 20 years, and here’s to 20 more.
Will it be released in Australia
If not how can I pre-order it as my partners mother is going to be arriving
LA in the next couple of days.
PLESE pleas please tell me I will be able to buy this on amazon!! urgh I bet not!!! Well…. looks like my credit card is going to get a big gash knocked in it….
It would match the ps1 I had. Now I say had because someone stole it along with all my games and my ps2. :( It was heartbreaking. I really really hope i get my hands on one of these!
Mr Yoshida.. Please please please tell me you guys will at least consider selling more units… I anticipate the original 12,300 units will sell out in SECONDS
I can’t believe it’s been so long.. seriously feels just like yesterday I got my PS1 and was playing Spyro as a little 4 year old kid.. then Area 51 on my PS2 and then GTA on my PSP, and now Destiny on my PS3 and soon Destiny on my PS4 it’d be so amazing to get my hands on this epic PS4 but not everyone will be able to and that’s what makes it just that more epic to have 1. :)
Where will i be able to pre order this ? and what will be the price?
This looks awesome, the feels I´d go through if I got this. But I have my black PS4 which i love, though I hope they put the controller up for sale individually, it´d go great with my original black, the white and the blue. I play alone most of the time but I love having all the different DS4. Oh, and the 20th anniversary theme is AMAZING!! Dat sound! It brought back so many memories of joyous gaming. Love Playstation, thanks for everything!
So will they be in retail stores like best buy or target ?I asked game stop they said they not getting any i heard they going be 499.99?so do I pre order on here where do I go?
I hate the “here’s a really cool product that everyone wants to buy, but you can’t have one because it sold out in half a second and we’re never making them again” mentality… Why don’t you guys want my money?
If nothing else, return to the colorful Playstation logo for the next revision of the PS4. Colorful Logo > Silver Logo. A matte finish on the entire console would be nice too along with rear USB.
Dang it! I just bought a PS4 last week! And now they surprise us with this? I don’t think I’ll be able to afford something as incredibly awesome as this before they’re all gone. :-(
Dear playstation,
I still remember the magical moment when I first played my PS1 years ago and after 20 years those magical memories still remain unchanged. You have been with me during both my good and bad times, happiness and sorrows. Thank you for helping me make new friendships with fellow gamers. Thank you for delivering 20 years of unparalleled gaming experience. On your birthday I wish that you will be able amaze the future generations of gamers just as much as you amazed the current generation gamers all these years. I have become a fan of the PS brand since the beginning and will remain as one for the rest of my life.
Wish you all the very best for both Sony and Playstation.
Happy birth day!!!!!!!!!!!
I WANT ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Annnnd the depression sinks in. I want it so bad but know i won’t be able to get it. Please Playstation keep making them after the 12300 ones are up! :(
I want to win this nice grey ps4 I never had one do I get this for free or do I have to pay uk price ??
Do I have to wait for a titckt number or something just asking ??
… Speechless. GOD I LOVE THIS FREAKING IDEA! Just one quick question, why not make it 20,000 Limited Editions for these 20 amazing years (I’m 21. And in life can’t complain lol)? Because am sure I won’t be getting one D’:<
I remember using my PS1 for music and playing with the moving music graphics it created. So fkng cool them days…
i hope that i can get it from amazon because i live in saudi arabia ):
Hi Shu, will we be able to watch the keynote by online streaming? Also will pre-orders be available online or do we have to attend the event to be able to pre-order? Thank you, I am prepared to purchase this PS4, I just hope I can successfully pre-order one!
Any word on if it will have the standard 500gb hard drive or will it come with something larger?
Any idea the cost? Would be nice if Sony would do a perferred or VIP buyer program since I currently own 12 PS3 Systems but only one PS4 unless I can buy one of the 20th editions! I would have already bought more PS4 systems if Home would have been released =(
My favorite of all my PS3 systems is my Gun Metal $700!!! Special edition! Which I was lucky to get straight from Konami and not from some awful ebay scalper!! I wish the same focus placed on ticket scalping would be enforced on other products like videos games (I’m a huge fan of all special edition releases)
I probably won’t be able to get the console itself but please tell me I can get a controller
HAVE been a great fan of PLAY STATION
and the limited edition is damn awesome !!!!
can we order it online
will it be available in india
if not how can i pre order it
Can I buy one from USA??? I live in UK .
One more day, nervousness and hype are colliding.
Please, I really want one so bad. I will be pre-ordering this I currently only have a PS3 at the moment but I would love for this console to be my ps4! I’m so anxious, please let me be able to snag one of these. :( I have the money, that isn’t a problem but I know these are going to sell out so quickly! Very nervous.
I still remember when I got my Playstation. It was summer 1996, I was 14 years old. My father took the family on a trip to visit my granduncle in Tokyo, Japan. Father took us to Akihabara and immediately a video game shop captured my eyes, they had a TV demo’ing Toshinden played on a Playstation. I had never seen anything like that, I was glued to that TV screen for a good 15 minutes if not more. Father saw me and asked “Do you want it?”, for sure I nodded like my life depended on it. Father then asked again “Are you going to study hard after you get it?” I nodded even harder!
It was a great memory, I left Japan and back home to Taiwan with my very own brand new Playstation with my first game Toshinden. I will never forget the joy it brought to my childhood, and of course PS4 now takes care of my adulthood. Thank you Sony for bringing the world Playstation, happy 20th anniversary!
I just bought a PS4 3 months back ! and now this….I want one :/
* on a side note PS4 needs AAA exclusive titles (everything is great about the PS4, only it is lacking the must have exclusives) – SONY please work on this.
Secondly please launch 20th anniversary console in Middle East as well…PLEASE !
PS is to Crash Bandicoot
PS2 is to Jak and Daxter
PS3 is to Uncharted/ TLoU
PS4 is to ?
I want it!!!! DX Been a fan of PS since it’s debut in ’94, the first game being Resident Evil 2 and, when finding it, Rayman. After that, Twisted Metal, and once ’97 came and FF7 came out… well, I decided that PS would be the only console style I’d play on because of being a high lover of adventure/rpg. Still have a ps2, the backwards compatible ps3, and since last year when it first came out, ps4. This would be a perfect nostalgic piece to add to the collection, and possibly one that would be cherished because of the origins coming out in a sleek new model. *nodnod*
Also, from what has been shown, it’ll be only 416$. Here is where it is shown on price: http://dailyanimenews.net/news/47218-20th-anniversary-playstation-4-unveiled.html
I live in Canada and was wondering if these can be pre ordered at a sony store retail location ?
I remember following all the info flowing out of Japan back in 1994. The gaming magazines at the time were showing all the great new games, but lots of people were skeptical and who could blame them. Sony was most know for all it’s other products, not games and other companies at the time like Panasonic with its 3DO, weren’t doing to good game wise.
Lucky for Sony though, the PS1 was a hit and the launch titles were amazing. I remember buying Toshinden, Ridge Racer and NBA Jam. Later they got good support from companies like Capcom, Konami, multiple new US studios like Single Trac and the rest is history. Many series that we enjoy today got their start on PS1, like Twisted Metal and Resident Evil or they got a huge boost in having great continuing series like Final Fantasy 7.
I am glad I held out on buying a PS4 since I figured this might have happened on the 20th anniversary.
Sadly since it is limited I might not get one, but what I feel is more important is enjoying great games and having fun with new IP’s.
Here’s to you Sony, i’ll see you in 2044 for your 50th!
I would love to buy one of the controllers if they end up being available seperately.
How much is one?
i live in Belgium and i realy want one. where and when can i buy one.
Can someone tell me where do I pre order tomorrow?
Will we be able to purchase the controller separate?
SONY!!! please make sure the pre ordering runs efficiently!! i will be highly disappointed if i cant get one!!! thanks for filling the past 19 years of my life full of adventure.
Do you think the dualshock will ever be sold separately? even without the etchings on the touchpad
If the hints are correct, the first 5500 people to order tickets to PSX will more than likely get first dibs on securing a system.
I am mad at myself for not following up on my plan to attend. :(
I am super interested in buying this even though I already have my PS4 from last Christmas. I know that the way to purchase it will be revealed on the Keynote presentation, but is there any way to raise my chances to be one of the first 12,300 people to order? Also, what time exactly is this topic coming up?
Can’t wait, they should have made the blue light greenish like on the PS1
Here’s a thought – it would be ridiculously awesome if you sold the top cover in black, but with the classic 4 color PS logo. I’d bet it would an instant buy for at least 30% of the user base.
I’m looking forward to hearing more details about the Anniversary edition console!
Cant wait am so happy it as been so long i remember my parents bought me a ps1 i was so exited i really enjoy ps1 games is a memory i will never forget
Shuhei?!? For the players?!? Only 12300. Why don’t you make it for all the players?
Please sell that controller stand-alone. Already have a PS4, but I would totally like that controller for nostalgia sake. I usually only like black consoles and controllers, however, the white ps4/controller and this controller look nice.
I have created a (pretty awesome) blanket fort, and will be camping in here with my laptop and many stacks of money. God, I hope I’m lucky enough to get one. >:\
