Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.
20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!
Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.
We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D
But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!
Our friend Sid Shuman has some details in the video above, so be sure to check it out and let us know what you think.
I look forward to celebrating the anniversary and all things PlayStation with you this week in Las Vegas at the PlayStation Experience.
Thanks for a great 20 years, and here’s to 20 more.
We shouldn’t support this crappy company in the first place. If we all abandon Sony and playstation 4, making it the world’s most unpopular device. I guess they will beg us to buy it some day.
Fan’s loyalty totally spoiled this crappy company.
I am! watching the refresh circle go round and round ><
I will like to see Mr. Shuhei Yoshida explaining all this mess.
Obviously they will put a nice PR phrase and forget about their real customers.
Agree ivyleague… they can stick their gold bracelets u kno where
And now the phone lines are down completely too
Why all the complaints? Everyone on the Internet is trying to hit their servers right now. Something like this would likely take even Amazon down.
Now yes, the situation is unpleasant, and it was not handled well. Realistically they should have taken pre-paid non-refundable preorders for one week and then made systems based on that number.
Or they could have done 123,000.
But there is no reason to post all this hate. Be civil!
I’m so mad, I sat patiently since 12:50 EST watching the event, nothing, trying to follow link I wait for on twitter, nothing, call in to order, can’t get a rep to answer… goes to emptyness a static when it sounds like they will pickup, can’t perform secure check out online. I’ve invested 5 hours and 20 years of being a fan and this is awful.
Mr. Shuhei Yoshida will say :” Screw you, dumb loyalist. I don’t care about your feeling. I just care about the lucrative profit created by the hungry selling atmosphere.”
quit complaing and just keep hitting F5, This is not a pity party.
Yea to be honest, im pretty sure my confirmation will come back negative.
we were lied too by sony telling us to watch the keynote address. Then the gold bracelet bull, making fans refresh twitter a million times. Then all of this… never again sony.
phone lines are up but sound like you are underwater…. I had an agent tell ME to move to a better location but it not MY phone at fault…. is SONY EVEN READING THIS??
It should have been sold out and must have been sold out, so clicking “F5” ten million time will still yield nothing but a broken keyboard.
still up for preorder but the site crashes.
So u leave work early, watch the entire presentation which was nice but find nothing out in the demonstration about the so called pre-sale that i believe IS A LIE AND HOAX to all that arent at the PSX convention…WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida….. you were all over this blog in the days leading up to this but your no where to be found right now…I LITERALLY HAD THIS IN MY CART AND WAS FINALIZING THE PAYMENT AND THE SITE CRASHES…ive been a loyal supporter of ps one 2 3 and 4 as in i own them all but YOU and your lame customer appreciation does not care about the loyal gamers..you would rather watch someone pawn this for 5,000 instead ofhaving a die hard gamer have one.
signed upset furious gamer
Fool me once, your fault. Fool me twice, my fault. Boycott cheating Sony! Damn Japanese liers.
Yup they are gone, I had the item in my cart and just needed it to complete the transaction but now coming back into the servers, its no longer there. GG No Re Sony
ivyleague: They probably sold most of the systems through insider bull*%*^, never even giving us a chance
this is ridiculous Sony !!! you should have made alot more of these and have it sold in stores for the holiday season as a limited time. Should have per-orders at Gamestops, Best buys etc.. also sell the controller separatelyas well
alll sooollld out great, even got them on the phone :(
I have been refreshing for a while, but now my cart is empty. Guess I was not lucky enough, but will keep trying to get it back.
Think of this like a meta game rather than a hassle :P
they pulled it out of my cart as well :/
It is now marked DISCONTINUED on their store!!!!
Update, I just realized I have been logged out of Sony Style. Perhaps there is hope yet?
out of 12,300. figure 200-300 given to media…lots of unboxings, couple thousand to the show, and a few thousand to each territory…….leaving what? 500-1000 at best for the sony store……lame.
I still have one in my cart, but every time I try to check out through Paypal, I get an “internal server error.” When I refresh the page it still shows the PS4 in my cart…
My hope is that all these troubles will show Sony that everyone wants one of these and they will increase production.
This would not only restore some good faith, but also hopefully keep the scalpers from making money.
Three-Ps: throw away the fantasy, face the reality. IT WAS BEEN SOLD OUT ABOUT 30 MINUTES BEFORE.
I get to the page that says “checkout review” and when I click on “confirm purchase” it loads for a good while before giving me an error…
Yea…….its gotta be over by now
CherylMason: They will NOT make more units, since the serial number labeled will be “No. 00123 of 12300”. If manufacturing more than 12300 units, there will be duplicate serials, which is nearly impossible.
@566 yeah had that problem too, on the phone, hold for 25min. they said all are sold and if not already purchased all are claimed…..again lame
Wow. One hour to place my order after seeing “Internal Server Error” over and over again. Then find out that my name went on the billing address instead of my wife’s (the card is hers). Now I’m calling customer service to verify my order won’t be cancelled and the line is full of static and nobody can understand me (I tried on multiple phones).
Sony, I love you guys, but really? You make billions a year, so there’s no excuse to have a phone and Internet server for the Sony Store that’s THAT bad.
why not just make more, but just make them regular bundles with out the stand and camera ? they don’t have to numbered either.
The numbered ones can be their own thing.. i am just talking about for the masses.
@572 “they said all are sold if not already purchased all are claimed”
So what do they mean by claimed cause I realized Sony logged me out and mine is still in cart, is that claimed
Either way this whole thing is kinda of messed up
I have been watching the panel all day, and no one has even referenced the Playstation
swissmr: What you said is correct. The shopping cart is not like a real cart in Walmart that once you throw in some product, it will be reserved. A PS4 in the cart doesn’t mean the system reserved one for you at all.
I have the same question as theGhost8288, I still have one in my cart and I’m still getting server errors, but does that mean that I successfully “claimed” one?
theGhost8288: “claimed” = “being checked out”, OK?
Three-Ps: “claimed” = “you already received the confirmation email”, is that clear enough to your question?
Did anyone else on the panel actually get one?? If so, what was your experience on the website?
@ ivy League…haha your example of Walmart is funny since people in that terrible place have been known to snatch things out of your cart….so maybe its exactly like that :)
Bel0kk: Agreed, I just want a system that looks sweet with a full color PlayStation logo!
You know what sony????? forget it……I’ll do something cooler anyway…… https://www.decalgirl.com/skins/Sony-PS4-Skins
@ swissmr… Exactly. I saw on Newspaper that people dragging, stealing products from other people’s carts in Walmart on the Black Friday.
USA is just a violent place. If Sony launched this limited console in retailers, I guarantee you huge gunfire and robbery will happen for sure.
Anyone else still tryng?
While my comment is awating mods…since it had a link.. decal girl dot com……is amazing and Ill just do that since the site crashed.
I feel pretty bad for those that missed out. If you want to use this as an excuse to explore options beyond Sony, I don’t blame you.
I’m not please that I needlessly sat through the keynote, patiently waiting for information that never came. It was only by chance that I learned that the twitter feed was the place to go.
