Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.
20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!
Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.
We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D
But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!

I’m pissed at Sony we still don’t know how to per order Ps4 20th anniversary I called Sony and PlayStation help lines and no one had an answer but there selling them on eBay how it that possible
Watched the whole keynote, just a small mention about the PS4 20th AE and NONE of which was about how to pre-order. Very disappointed. And considering that millions of fans purchased the original PSX AND PS4, what were you guys thinking when only producing 12,300? This is doing an injustice to yourself for potentially losing out more sales and your most loyal fans, when it’s most likely that scalpers will just buy these up and sell for ridiculous prices (already evident on eBay), leaving everyone else in the cold. I understand that you want the edition to be special, but wouldn’t it be even more special if more people could celebrate your 20th by having a 20th AE of their own?
I can’t stare at my computer 24/7. If the wait’s too much longer, I’m going to miss out. ;_;

Maybe people selling it on ebay is the one in Las Vegas who got the gold bracelet and secure their pre-order.
you all should file a complaint with Sony and tell them how we feel I have already and i *****ed them out on the phone and with emails and let your voice be heard
I think SONY should have put all the systems on EBay themselves to rake in the profit as well as to recover from North Korea’s hacking issue ;)
Or just do a contest or be like Microsoft and send systems to people that have has Live since day one! Speaking of Microsoft…. ironically I’ve watched the entire keynote on my Xbox One since I could not find out to stream it from my PS4 :P
Sadly, I attended a simulcast of last years keynote… codes were given out that did not even give what was promised! Was suppose to be $5 PSN credit as well as some other downloads. The people running the even did not even appear to be Sony Employees!
I really wish that dat PS1-color DS4 would be sold separately. Oh well. This is still fricking awesome.
