Ether One Coming Soon to PS4

Hey! We’re White Paper Games and we’re REALLY excited to announce that we’re joining the PlayStation family. We released a game called Ether One back in March 2014 on PC and we’re now focused on developing on PS4. The exciting thing about releasing on PS4 is that we’ll be creating Ether One from scratch in the new Unreal Engine 4. That means it’s not just a direct port, we’ll be re-building it again in UE4 to make it feel great on console.

Ether One

To give you a little background about our studio, we’re a team of five from Manchester in the UK. Ether One was our first game and we’re really proud of what we achieved in a short space of time. Like being nominated for a Develop Award in the Use of Narrative, we’ve been blown away by how good the response from people has been.

We have to admit, we love our PlayStation, so when Sony asked us if we wanted to be on the platform our answer was unanimously YES! Sony have been really great providing a small studio like ours with so much support and the opportunity to get onto PS4, so we’d like to give them a massive thank you.

So, what is Ether One?

Ether One is a first-person exploration game with optional puzzle solving. If you like to explore worlds and unravel the story without worrying about puzzles then you’re free to do so. However, if you’re the old school adventure, pen and paper type player that loves solving all the puzzles then Ether One has a lot of that for you, too. If you choose to pull apart everything in the world you’ll be rewarded with a deeper narrative understanding.

Our aim with Ether One is to tell a story about how fragile the human mind can be and what it would mean for someone close to you to not even be able to recognize you anymore. A lot of our family members have struggled with the illness of dementia and we felt it was something close to our hearts which we had to explore in our game. A lot of you reading may have experienced the effects of dementia first hand, if you have, we hope a game like Ether One will help you relate to your own experiences.

Your role in Ether One is that of a Restorer, an individual with the ability to project himself into the mind of someone suffering from mental illness in the hopes of restoring their memories. Once inside the mind, you will have to find the broken fragments of your patient’s memories in order to heal and restore them. By piecing together these fragments, you’ll start to understand more about your patient’s life, where they grew up and what your place is in all of this.

Ether One

We hope we can bring you a new type of game for your consoles that you haven’t played before. We’ll be sure to keep you all updated on our progress and since Ether One is already out on PC, it means we can spend a lot of time focusing on refining the experience for console. We can’t say enough how excited we are to be joining you all on PS4 and can’t wait to share more of it with you.

  • This is fantastic news! I love streaming unique indie games, so this will be exciting to check out. Can’t wait to hear more details, and a release date.

  • This looks really interesting. I’ll have to check it out.

  • What about Vita?

Add Vita to your platforms list.

  • I’m really excited about this game. Definite a day one buy. I’m LOVING this gaming Renaissance we’re being treated to compliments of the indie gaming movement. Digital distribution has made this possible, so thanks to Sony for pushing their digital storefront so hard.

My first console was an Atari 2600 and I honestly believe we’re in another golden age of gaming, where we finally have the graphical capabilities to make just about anything people can dream up.

  • Oh and P.S. I’m going to be imagining that this town is Innsmouth from Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”. It looks a little like what I always imagined that town would look like. So, double bonus. Here’s hoping for half-fish people! ;)

  • Sounds like a great idea for a game. Definitely interested in playing this.

Food for thought: make sure to make the FOV as wide as possible. A lot of people like myself get motion sick when it’s too narrow.

    Thanks for the news update!

  • Looks interesting just hope the price isn’t too high and hopefully a demo would be available upon release.

  • Very interested.

  • too. many. great. games. …drowning in awesome.

  • Now this is a game that also looks to be another fantastic game that I can get into and will support.

  • Welcome to Playstation! I look forward to playing Ether 1!

  • Another awesome-looking game. Very interesting stuff.

  • Game looks great!

  • Almost reminds me of Myst the game so this seems like it will be a interesting, games that have problem solving in them are always good games.

  • If you told me 5 yeast ago that one day in my top 10 most anticipated games, 7 of them will be indies, I would have said that you are crazy. This is a day one purchase! Thank you Sony for being so awesome.

  • P.S. What does “soon” mean ? This year ?

  • all these adventure-type games getting announced for PlayStation is AWESOME

definitely need to bump up the geometry of the existing assets, though. the lantern in the screenshot looks like a rough last-gen model.

  • No disc, no sale.

  • does anyone know when this is going too get released?
